I have noticed that when using Tigers Dosk utility to ERASE a flash drive I have a choice of FAT but not FAT32.  It seems that flash drives formatted as FAT do not work properly when trying to copy files from a Windows machine.  Why?

I have noticed that when using Tigers disk utility to format an external USB flash drive I only have the choice of FAT ( when formatting for use on a Windows machine ) and not FAT32.   I have found that USB FLASH drives formatted as FAT do not always work on Windows machines.  Why?  How can I use Tiger to format for FAT32?

I think it depends on the size of the Flash Drive as to whether it uses FAT16 or FAT32.
Can you format it FAT32 on the PC?

  • Copying Files From a Remote Machine through "rcp" command not working.

    Hi All,
I'm a new comer to this famous forum. I was trying to go through the PDF "Solaris Advanced User's Guide" .So in chapter 9-"Using the network" i came across "Copying Files From a Remote Machine". And the syntax was "rcp machinename:source destination" . And i got another note. It is like
"The rcp command enables you to copy files from one machine to another. This command uses the remote machine's /etc/hosts.equiv and /etc/passwd files to determine whether you have unchallenged access privileges. The syntax for rcp is similar to the command syntax for cp.".
But i maintained remote machine's IP address in my system's /etc/hosts file. But still i am unable to do the rcp from remote system to my system or vice versa.
Always i am getting error message " **Connection refused**".
Therefore please some one guide me how to perform the " Copying Files From a Remote Machine" through rcp command.

    Hi
The inconvenience of using scp is that you have to type the password every time you stablish a connection. You can work around this, adding a key into the remote hosts_allow file. This implies in more maintenance.
    From the rcp man page:
+rcp does not prompt for passwords. It either  uses  Kerberos authentication which is enabled through command-line options or your current local user name must exist on  hostname  and allow remote command execution by rsh(1).+
    From the rsh man page:
+ If you omit command, instead of executing a single command, rsh logs you in on the remote host using rlogin(1).+
By default, rlogin is disabled on Solaris 10
    [SunOS 5.10/bash] root@wgtsinf01:/store/sun/operating-systems
    # svcs -a|grep -i rlog
disabled       May_11   svc:/network/login:rloginSo, to use rcp you have to enable the rlogin service and set up all the configuration files. Particularly, as already suggested, I too suggest you to use scp. :)
    Cheers

  • Error message when trying to copy files from memory stick to MacBookPro

Trying to copy files from my memory stick to my MacBookPro and have started to get a crazy error message - "Attempting to copy to the disk Macintosh HD failed. You do not have enough access privileges for this operation."
I've never had a problem before today. Any help will be welcomed!

Try this. When the stick is mounted on your desktop, right click "Get Info" and at the bottom choose "ignore ownership on this drive." See if that works.

    Hi wayneiii,
If you are having issues adding video files to iTunes on your Windows machine, you may want to verify that they are in a format that iTunes can play. You may find the following article helpful:

  • I have tried to transfer files from my windows media player to my ipod but it saysthe device has stopped responding or stopped working.this is the first time ive connected nmy ipod to my new pc.any ideas?

I have tried to transfer music from my windows 7 media player to my ipod. This is the first time i have tried to use my ipod on my new computer .In the media player it doesnt give me the option to add to itunes library it just give me the option to send to my ipod and when i do this it says that the device has stopped responding or isnt working.Any ideas? coz i aint got the foggiest where i am going wrong. My ipod keeps telling me to update the software, but then will i lose the music thats already on my ipod?

You should import the music (that is listed in Windows Media Player) into your iTunes Library - on your computer - to add it to your existing iTunes Library. I take it you have moved (or copied) your music from the old computer to the new computer, haven't you?
Then Sync your iPod to that Library.
iPods will not respond to Windows Media Player, they're designed to connect to iTunes.

  • Downloding DMG files from a Windows machine

    Hi
Anyone know how I can download the DMG installations files if I'm accessing the site from a Windows machine? When I try to download a trial version, it attempts to download an exe file which as I understand it, won't work on the Mac. I am planning to download the files and install on another machine (Mac) which is isolated from the internet.
    Thanks
    Alessandro

Thanks for pointing me to that useful-looking guide. I'll have to go through it and see if I've followed the correct steps.
But, yes I'm using XP Professional and I know I've done this before. I had to re-install some Windows components on the Dell, and that's when I lost access and had to start over. I guess I should have kept notes from last time.
BTW... I just installed Leopard on one of my Macs and can't access the Dell at all from there... including the external F-drive that was no problem before. I suppose I should locate a Leopard forum for that, but if anything comes to mind, please let me know.

  • I get error 8062 when trying to copy files from one external hard drive to another. It starts out copying files, but after 10 minutes or so it stops and I get the error 8062. The hard drive tech support says the problem is in my Macbook Air.

I cannot copy my doc and photos and videos from one external hard drive to a second external hard drive -- both plugged in to my MacBook Air -- I get Error 8062 and the copying (which seemed to be going on for 10 minutes) stops and nothing gets copied.
As any Macbook Air owner knows, there is SO LITTLE storage capacity on the computer that you have to back up big files onto an external hard drive to avoid getting the other annoying error that says you have no more memory/storage capacity/whatever the proper term is, and you cannot use the computer.
Backstory: Before this error cropped up, I had backed up lots of files to an external drive and then removed them from my computer. But then the external hard drive got corrupted and I could not access my entire photo library. Had to pay $850 to Kroll Ontrack to recover those files. I have now bought 2 new external 1 Terrabyte  hard drives as protection against another such disaster. BUT I cannot copy the files from the first hard drive where all my reovered files now sit, to another backup hard drive.
    Feeling vulnerable. Please help.

    From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter
and uncheck the box labeled Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible, if it's checked.
If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Start up in Safe Mode and test.
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive has failed. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

  • Using Automator to copy files from a Windows network

This has been covered before, but the solution didn't work for me, so excuse the mainly copy-and-paste article:
I wrote an automator workflow to copy a chosen file located on a PC on the local network.
    Here is the workflow:
    Get Specified Servers
    Mount Servers
    Ask for Finder Items
    Copy Finder Items
The workflow executes fine up until the workflow actually finishes copying all the files. The automator complains that the Copy Finder Items errors with the following message:
    Can't read directory contents: /Volumes/Files
The other thread suggests choosing "Ignore Input" for the "Ask for Finder Items" action, which I did. But now I have a different error:
    Couldn't create: /Users/{my name}/Desktop/filename.xlsx
    Any ideas? Thanks!

  • How to Copy Files from Corrupt Time Machine Disk

Following a series of power outages, my TM disk became corrupted. When I tried to repair with disk utility, I got the message: Unable to repair, copy as many files as you can and then reformat the disk.
My question: Is there any way to capture all/part of my TM backups (they contain a history going back many months that I'd prefer not to lose)? Though I can dig in and get individual files, when trying for anything larger (like the series of backups), they are unable to copy with the files/folders being locked/read only.
Any help would be appreciated. I'll move to a 2 drive backup system after this!
    Thanks

TM performs a backup in a rather unusual manner. An initial backup stores all the files in a disc image file. It then creates a special type of alias for each file. When you look through a TM backup you are looking at the aliases, not the files themselves.
If the drive's directory is the only thing corrupted and Disk Utility cannot repair it, then I suggest trying Disk Warrior that can repair many directory problems that Disk Utility cannot.
Otherwise, you will need to go through the backup with the TM application and attempt to restore the good files to another hard drive. Also,
See User Tips for Time Machine for help with TM problems. Also you can select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine" to locate articles on how to use TM. See also Mac 101- Time Machine.

i had saved some files in webarchive format but i must read them from a computer with windows installed
there is a way to make it possible?
or is it possible to open them with textedit and save in another format readable with windows?

    thanks

    Hi
I find that selecting print from Safari's file menu,
then Pdf-Save as PDF gives good results. Much
better than Safari's webarchive format imo. The pdf's
produced should be useable on any computer
thank you i will try this solution

  • Time capsule crash when copying files from it

Hi, I'm trying to copy files from a time capsule to a windows 7 pc. When I do that the time capsule crashes. I can copy files from the windows 7 pc to the time capsule without problems. Has anybody got a clue? I just bought the time capsule, so it has the latest versions.

What do you see that you interpret as a Time Capsule crash?  You can use AirPort Utility to look at the log file of the Time Capsule.  Go into "Manual Setup", then invoke Base Station > Logs and Statistics.  There might be a message in the log that helps explain the problem.

  • Windows 8.1 will not copy files from intranet site.

I am using Windows 8.1 and I am trying to copy files from an Apple Time Capsule disk to a local hard drive. First I got the message box that said "Your Internet security settings suggest that one or more files may be harmful. Do you want to use it
anyway?" and when I said okay nothing would copy. I went into my Internet options and added the Time Capsule disk to my site list in the Local Intranet Zone and reconnected the shared drive. Now I don't get the error box but it doesn't copy
anything either. It does nothing. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
