I have recently upgraded to Lion on y iMac. I find that the OS is running much slower that the previous version snow lepard. I found in my applications some files which are rated Power PC which I want to get rid off, but they just won't go away.

Any suggestions on getting the machine run faster ??

Upgrade the RAM.  It's cheap, and easy to do yourself.
