I have trouble in building stand-alone application, "you must intall Labview run-time engine on any computer on which you want to run this application"

I have installed the LabVIEW 7.0 run time engine and checked all in the advanced setup on the installer setup slide. but I still get such a message saying that the target computer needs to have LabVIEW 7.0 run-time engine. What I want is a real stand-alone application even without having labview ... I used to think that's due to my program contains MATLAB nodes. But this is not true, since even without Matlab, it's still wrong. Please help, thanks!!!

As was stated elsewhere, you have the option of building the runtime engine into your application when you build it. However, you can also create a "runtime engine application" by simply opening the application builder and doing a build without adding any source code files. The result is a small program (named lvrt.exe) that can run any LabVIEW code--whether or not its built into an executable.
Such an application can be helpful if you are wanting to install several LV-based applications on the same computer in that it reduces the amount of redundant code on disk. All you have to do is make sure that Windows on the target computer associates the llb and vi file extensions with the runtime engine program.
It can also be helpful during testing to run test code that isn't built into an executable.

I assume that the poster means to run this on a computer without the development environment installed.  That is what the app builder is for. Review Altenbach's post.  This being said, there will need to be a runtime engine installed on the target PC. You can 'bundle' that with your build application and install it together, although I usually prefer Not to do that, and make that a seperate step because it is rather large, and if the target already has it, then it is wasted space.  Speaking of run time engine, I have seen negative reactions to it by my customers, but after sitting down and explaining that, with few exceptions, every application requires a run time engine. It is just that some are bundled with windows, or installed through windows update.  Once explained, it usually quiets the opposition. [Paul steps off soap box now]

  • Building an Application in Windows to be used in Linux (with the Run-Time Engine)

    Hi All,
I have an LabVIEW project I have developed in a Windows environment.  I can create an Application (.exe) using the Build Specification -> Application Builder which works fine on the development platform.
I now want to distribute the application to a Linux Environment.  The OS is openSUSE v10.3 (with GNOME).  I have downloaded the two rpm files needed for the run-time engine and installed them, as per here:http://digital.ni.com/softlib.nsf/websearch/97E14BA3E0C14A89862572C300567733?opendocument&node=13207...
Now, the question is; how do I create an Application in Windows which can be used on the Linux Box?  According to the Application Builder instructions, it's simply a case of removing the .exe extension in the Target File Name options, however, this gives an error "Invalid Extension."
If I do create an exe and manually remove the extention is doesn't work on the Linux enviroment (typing ./application).
Has anyone had experiance of this?
    Many Thanks for Any Help,

The cross-platform nature of LabVIEW refers more to the code than to the executable.
LV (given the appropriate development version) can compile the same source code into a Windows (using LV for Windows), Linux (using LV for Linux) or Mac (using LV for Mac) program.
This means you will still have three versions of your program, one for each platform.
If you want to distribute VIs (without block diagrams), you will also need different versions of these as without the block diagram, they cannot be re-compiled for a new platform.

The really strange thing about this is that I'm using LabVIEW 2011SP1, I don't even have LabVIEW 2013 installed, not even the runtime.
Where is the problem? Why is it even complaining about LabVIEW 2013? Has anyone seen this before?

I do have the LabVIEW 2013 discs but didn't install it.
I checked in Control Panel > Programs and Features > National Instruments Software and the LabVIEW 2013 Run-Time is not listed there.
I also checked in MAX > Software and I must have missed it the first time I looked. LabVIEW Run-Time 2013 is listed there after all.
Now I remember installing VISA 5.4 to get rid of a nasty bug. It must have installed the 2013 Run-Time when I did that.
So now I need to distribute 2 runtimes with my application?!?!

  • When creating an application installer in LV, what run-time engine or driver must be installed to install the VISA interactive control?

I've created an application installer using LabVIEW's application builder and use it to install NI MAX.  However, after running the installer, the VISA interactive control is disabled in NI MAX.
    The installer installs the following NI components:  NI LabVIEW Run-Time 2014 SP-1(64-bit), NI LabWindows/CVI Shared Run-Time Engine 2013 SP2, NI Measurement & Automation Explorer 14.5, NI-488.2 Application Development Support (includes run-time), NI-VISA Configuration Support 14.0.1, NI-VISA Runtime 14.0.1, NI-VISA Server 14.0, NI Systems Configuration Runtime 14.5.0, vision run-time, dc-power run-time.
If I download and run the 488.2 installer, the VISA interactive control is enabled in NI MAX.  But, the installer created with the application builder does not seem to install the necessary components.
What needs to be added to the installer to enable  the VISA interactive control (VISAIC)?
    Thanks.

Sorry for the confusion with the forum post that Jon sent you. I did some research on our internal database and I found out the component will not be installed by any of the components added from the additional installers section on the configuration of the installer. As you have already found out you need to install the full installer in order to enable this feature.
I know that this might be an inconvenient for you because you wanted to have one installer to run. On this case may I suggest using the NI Batch Installer Builder.
The NI Batch Installer Builder allows building installers that contain National Instruments software from several products. That way you can create an installer for you application in LabVIEW (and not include the drivers in the additional installer section), then use NI Batch Installer Builder to include the installer for your application and the full version of the drivers that you mentioned.

  • Distribute application without labview run-time engine

I read a lot of post saying if the target machine has the same run-time engine installed, then I don't need to distribute the application with labview run-time engine. Somehow this rules doesn't work for me. I have a PC installed labview 2010 development system and has run-time engine 2011 SP1. I also download the same version of run-time engine and installed it in a target PC. When I distribute my labview application, if I select to include the run-time engine in build properties, the application will be able to install and run properly in the target machine; If I don't include the run-time engine, then I wouldn't be able to run the application.

And in build properties, it actually list addition installer include labview run time engine SP1. • Labview 7.0 is compatable with Labview Imaq6.1 , vision builder 6.0 and Imaq run time engine 6.0.

    Sir,
My system is PXI 8174 and i an using NI 1411 card for my application. I want to know the compatability of the softwares. Whether Labview 7 is compatable with Labview Imaq 6.1 , vision builder 6.0 and Imaq run time engine 6.0.

    Hi,
Assuming you meant IMAQ Vision 6.1 instead of IMAC 6.1, this software was intended to run on LabVIEW 5.1, 6.0, and 6.1.  I have heard of it being used with LabVIEW 7 on occasion, so it may be possible to make it work, but this has not been tested and is not officially supported.  Vision Builder 6.0 should run; however, it was developed long before LabVIEW 7.x and will not generated code for LabVIEW 7.0 and later.  The Vision RTE version should correspond to the version of Vision you are using.  For instance, if the program was developed with Vision 6.1, the computer should have the Vision 6.1 RTE installed.  With this being said, if you plan to use LabVIEW 7, I recommend updating your other software.

  • Call VI in EXE but have it execute in Development Environment not Run Time Engine

I am working on building a palette editor for distribution of a reusable code library for my company (I know the VIPM does this very well already).  I have the code complete and am trying to create an executable that I can distribute that will call the code I wrote to update/create the palette .mnu files for the reuse library, which lives on the company network.  I am using the Palette Editing VI's and it seems as though they cannot be built into an executable.  So I wrote some code to dynamically call my palette modification code (I call it the Reuse Library Manager).  When my executable calls the Reuse Library Manager dynamically I get a broken run arrow on the Reuse Library Manager front panel and the following reasons for the broken arrow:
It seems to me that the reason the Reuse Library Manager works when called in the development environment and not when called dynamically is because the dynamic call uses the run time engine for execution.  This made me think of how in the VIPM it opens LabVIEW while it installs packages.  If anyone knows, does the VIPM open LabVIEW in order to run the Palette Editing VI's or is it for another reason?  If it is this reason how can I force the dynamically called VI's to run in the development environment by opening LabVIEW programmatically from an executable that is running in the run time engine?
Let me know where clarification is needed.

    Hi jmcbee,
In spite of years of using LV and building a resuable library of code, I've done very little with customizing the standard paletts, however,
Many times when deploying a new distributable I've seen a dialog like what you posted.  In most cases the problem was solved by rebuilding distributable to include the missing VIs.  In one case I added the VI-lib to the target-platform and made-sure VI-lib was in distributable's VI search-path.
There are two ways I know of to build distributables which include the VI-lib code,
    1) Include all VI-lib VIs when building the distributable
     - In LV 8x, uncheck "Exclude Files from VI lib" project-property.
     - In LV 7.1 it's possible but I don't remember how! (probably a post on it around here.)
     - This can add an enormous number of un-needed VIs (see this post.)
    2) Re-write the VIs so that they are no-longer identified with VI-lib and get included "naturally".
     - Open each VI diagram, select-all, paste in new/untitled diagram.  In your case naming will be tricky, but it's doable.
     - This is a great advantage in 8x as it allows LLBs to be built with File\Save As\Create Hierarchy.
In addition, here's a tool to call following "Open VI Reference" (if it returns an error.)  This VI open all broken children making it much easier to identify specific missing parts (typically VI-lib.)
    Luck/
    Cheers!

  • Does Labview run-time engine 6.0 application created by Window NT can install & run on other OS?

I created a Run-Time engine 6.0 application from my Vi and it is working fine! I wonder that this application can install and run on other OS system? What I have heard is "Yes" ... but I am not sure!
Any one know for sure? Thanks.

    > I am sorry that I did not clarify my question enough, I meant other
    > kind of OS 's that are not from Microsoft Windows!
    >
Across multiple OSes, you will most likely be able to load the VIs and
execute them in the LV environment or rebuild the executable with no
problem. But, you will not be able to run executables built for Windows
on Mac, Solaris, or Linux. The reason is that executables have to meet
binary standards, and those standards differ between the OSes. It
really doesn't matter what language/tool the executable is built with,
if it is the OS that is loading it, it will be specific to the OS.
It would be great of someone like ISO or ANSI declared an executable
standard that all OSes could load and execute, but since t
    he goal of
executables is maximum flexibility and maximum performance, it is
unlikely that this new standard would win out over the existing ones.
If this comes about, the LV team will definitely be looking to take
    advantage of it.
