Whenever I am using Skype or playing game for a while it losses carrier signals and wifi. When it is cooled down afer shutting down the carrier signals and wifi are back. It is for sure problem is with heating, but 30 degree tempeature in Oman is normal and some time it goes upto 50 degrees. I have noticed this has started after I started using substandard charger as I lost my original charger of the phone. Please help!! Thanx.

The specifications define an operating range up to 35 degrees.

So you are saying that you followed all of the steps in the support document for problems with connection, including removing and reinstalling iTunes? You do not say what you have tried, so it is hard to make recommendations. If this is the case, then you have tried resolving driver issues? What if you go to Device Manager and look for the iPhone. You should be able to click on it and see about drivers. You can update/reinstall the device driver.

There are major reception and battery problems with iPhone 3GS after upgrading to iOS 4.2.1.
I can not believe that Apple did not test this for major bugs like this one is.
I am a business user and can not effort to have bad reception. Apple wants to gain in the business clients... I never had this with my former BlackBerrys!
I need a reliable phone not a play thing like this is right now, it just needs it to work propely. And if a major bug like this comes along, fix it immediately. After the iPhone4 story, now this...incredible! Going back to my reliable BlackBerry! It just ain't reliable and takes forever to fix a problem.

I have the same issue after iOS 4.2.1 update. I am using iPhone 3GS officially unlocked by Apple. I tried using different SIM cards and both carriers show same problem when using phone in 3G mode. Phone falls back to EDGE mode showing 'E' from '3G' at start. I have reset the phone and rebooted several times and moved to different cell areas in the city just to verify the problem.
I had no such issues earlier. I also have Nokia E71 which shows full signal and has no such issues.
I have posted the bug on apple iphone feedback page. I hope they Apple will fix the problem and test the release properly on all models before releasing to public.

Unfortunately it looks like your 3GS' battery has expanded so much that it cracked the whole case wide open. If you have AppleCare on your device then you're all set, just take it to your local Apple Store.
If not, then still take it to the store. Complain about the battery bursting, and make sure to tell them that it's for sure a defect (you'd think it's obvious, but sometimes you just need to drive the point in), and that it potentially could have been and still be a hazard.
Remind them that the phone has not been in any adverse conditions, extreme temperatures, or abused in any way but that you just merely used it normally. (I'm assuming that's the truth?)
If they're good about it they should replace the broken phone for you; but unfortunately there's little chance of repairing your current device.

If I understand correctly, you are in Romania and the phone was bought from Sweden. In order to unlock that device, you have to have the carrier in Sweden unlock it. If your phone just won't power on, then wjosten has provided the steps needed to try and power it on. Otherwise, if you want the phone "unlocked" or if it has been "jailbroken" or an unauthorized version of software has been put on the iphone, nobody can help you here.

I created a file in one-byte russian encoding cp1251 and declared String literal with 2 letters:

After I got bytes from it - str.getBytes("cp1251") - it returned 2 byte's array.
Now I created a file with UTF-8 encoding with equal content and suddenly:

I need to get a one-byte encoded arrays (cp1251 or koi8-r) but getBytes ALWAYS returns two-byte encoded arrays.
It is very strange: cp1251 is always one-byte encoded, but .getBytes("cp1251") returns two-byte on each letter. Why? Please help.

I did not read a string from a file. I created 2 .java files with different encodings (cp1251 and UTF-8) and compiled them, telling compiler with -Dfile.encoding=*** to read them correctly. While execution java interprets two looking equal in editor strings as different objects with different .intern() representation.
Why java consider source .java file encoding while creating internal representation of String object and creates from looking equally in editor strings two DIFFERENT Unicode representations. And it is impossible to convert one representation to other - impossible to get two equal byte[] arrays.

HT201210 Very serious problem on iPhone 3GS and iTune

Although I have already followed all the instructions to restore the iPhone 3GS in the iTune, every time this error message displays, and the restore cannot be executed properly. Even if the restore can be completely executed, the phone always hangs for over a few hours.
I have approached Kowloon Tong Apple Store, Hong Kong twice to ask for the possibility of changing the damaged iPhone 3GS to iPhone 4GS and iPhone 5 by paying back the price difference.
However, I was very disappointed that NO policy of changing the iPhone 3GS to iPhone 4GS and iPhone 5 can be granted in all situations, because once after the products were sold, they cannot be replaced or returned. I have wasted a lot of money, but the money cannot be returned, or replaced to another better-quality iPhone. I still have to do a lot of school and employment projects.

I figured the problem would be with the security policies that our company uses regarding Exchange. I'll let them know about the problem and maybe they can remove the restriction concerning the camera on my iPhone.

Many problems with iPhone 3gs.

I've been having so many problems with my iPhone 3gs in the past few days, These things aren't cheap, and money is tight. For about 2 days, My home button, speaker, microphone, and charge port (On the iPhone) Would not work whatsoever, I have been asking on just about every website with the word Apple in it, trying to diagnose what's wrong with it. I tossed it from the roof of a Sedan, A careless mother left her young child in the carseat on the roof, and as I ran to grab it, It slipped out of my hand. Not too bad of a toss, No cracks on the screen, But I couldn't do a Hard Reset, Or put it in DFU Mode. So after hours and hours of plugging in different cords, plugging those diferrent cords into different computers, and wall chargers, and even buying a new wall charger for 40$! I get a small glitch of battery charge. But now, It will only charge when the iPhone completely dies, and then it will charge to 5% and repeat (If i'm lucky). I basically have a 200$ Paperweight. The iPhone doesn't have a warranty anymore, And i'm not looking to spend hundreds to get it fixed, I never opened it, and it has never been Jailbroken. I can't restore it because when I put it into Recovery Mode, It still wasn't getting recognized by the computer. I just want my iPhone fixed, or at least a replacement, I used this for just about everything, I can't even create a backup file of my data. The iPhone is not only Unrecognized by iTunes, But it's as if the Charging Port in the iPhone isn't even there! There is no damage to the Charge Port itself, But around the case area is a crack from the fall. Please get back to me ASAP! This is a huge inconvenience!

Well, just so you understand, you are not addressing Apple here. We are users just like yourself that try to answer technical questions from other users. It appears as though the fall has created numerous hardware issues for the phone, that is why you cannot seem to get the phone to restore or get it to be recognized in iTunes. Since the phone is out of warranty, you have two choices. You can take the phone to the local Apple Store and see about an Out of Warranty (OOW) replacement. This is for phones that are out of warranty and do not work. OOW for a 3GS would run $149/USD here in the US. Not sure if that is where you are or not. The second choice is to Google for a 3rd party repair facility and see if they can fix it and what they would charge. The rest is up to you.

Multiple problems with iPhone 3GS ( 2yrs old)

The first problem involves my wifi connection. About half the time, my iPhone will just randomly disconnect from my wifi network which is usually about 10 feet away. If it is connected, I only receive 1 or 2 bars on on the screen while my MacBook Pro and other devices all have full strength (as would be expected when only 10 feet away). This makes using wifi on my iPhone incredibly slow. I have tried reseting network settings and all that, but with no success. Any suggestions?
Second, for about a month or two, my iPhone has been having serious problems connecting properly with iTunes wirelessly. I get a wide variety of error messages that include things about how I should connect my iPhone and restore it (tried that, didn't help), something about how it can't properly read the device, etc. While trying to connect to the iPhone, it sometimes causes iTunes to lockup and if I try to use wifi sync from my iPhone, it never finds my MacBook Pro. I also seem to be having problems getting the iPhone to backup to iCloud properly even when it is connected to wifi, plugged in to a power source, and locked (as it tells me to do on the iPhone) or if I try to force a manual backup. It just sits there telling me "Backing up...," but that bar never moves and it never gives an estimate of time remaining. I wouldn't be surprised if these issues were also related to the wifi issue above. Any suggestions for these problems?
I am afraid to ask, but is my iPhone on the way out? Thanks to all that help.

Regarding the wi-fi connection problem, if no change after resetting network settings on the iPhone and/or after restoring the iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from the iPhone's backup, the iPhone has a hardware problem with the wireless card or something else.

I would like to apologise for being so stressful today but I just received a phone call from my carrier from which I bought my iPhone and he informed that they need 615€ for repairing my iPhone
So, what's the story...
About a year and 3 months ago, I bought a brand new iPhone 3GS 32GB. After 9 months, I had a minor problem with the home button that did not respond some times. I went to my carrier to repair it and what the service department did was to change the mainboard at no cost since I had a 1 year warranty.
After that, the phone was functioning perfectly.
About 20 days ago, I wanted to restore from a backup, as I had deleted some phone numbers that I needed again. I connected the phone to my Mac, launced iTunes and chose restore. At the question "Restore and Update", I clicked "yes" and the process begun and finished. I had version 3.1.3 installed in my phone and updated to 4.2.1.
And here comes the weared part...
When the phone rebooted, ALL ICONS WERE GONE!!! I cound see only the wallpaper
I reseted the phone and when it turned on it asked to connect with iTunes.
I connected it and iTunes poped a message that the phone is in recovery mode.
I tried to restore again but in the middle of the process an error message poped up again about en error 1015...
The phone was rebooting again and again until it closed form low battery...
So, I went to my carrier from which I boughted for service. Afetr 20 days they called me saying that the phone needs new motherboard and it costs 615€ for reapairing it since my warranty was expired...
I have all the papers that proove my sayings. If you could see my phone, you would suppose that is brand new!!! Never fallen, never weted
OK, I can survive without an iPhone.
BUT I HAVE LOST ALL MY CONTACTS PLUS VARIOUS LOGIN PASSWORDS THAT I HAVE STORED IN AWESOME NOTE APPLICATION.
And I have one single and simple question: WHY?
What I did wrong?
Why I have to pay for 615€ for having my phone back?
Why I have to pay more to buy a new one since I had an excellent phone that did its work fine and was like a brand new one?
WHO IS GOING TO LISTEN TO MY PROBLE AND PAY ANY KIND OF ATTENTION?
I really don't know what to do... And you know something? I cannot afford to buy a new one...

OK, I bought the phone from my carrier's official store (the central one in Athens which is the biggest in country) when I renewed my annual subscription on November 2009. It was sealed. And the change to the logic board 9 months ago was made by the carrier's exclusive service.
I have heard about "jail braking" hobbit and I GIVE YOU MY WORD THAT I NEVER DID OR TRIED TO DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT!
Why? Simply because I already have a Garmin GPS device and all I need from my phone are 4 applications that I needed to purchase in order to do my work:
1) FTPOnTheGo (in case I have to download or upload something in my server or change a PHP or JavaScript file)
2) Team Viewer (in case I need to reach my Mac from far away)
3) QuickOffice (for my Microsoft Office files)
4) Brain Challenge 2 (in case I am somewhere I have to wait and I want to "kill" my time)
That's it! End of story! Everything else is not useful for me at any level.
And something else... I am a programmer and web developer since 2000.
One thing that I have learned is NEVER HACK A READY-MADE PLATFORM BECAUSE THE NEXT TIME YOU UPDATE IT WILL CRASH!
The irony is that all people around me have jail broken their phones and they work like dopped horses I feel so stupid that I wanted to be the exception!
Finally, I spent the last 4 hours searching in Google for a solution. I found several things that made me say "Yes, this is the solution, I made it!"
I downloaded 3.1.3 .pwn, 4.2.1 .pwn and tried to restore but nothing.
I also tried redSnow, blackRain, yellowYogurt, blueOrange and all these jail braking solutions with the silly names but nothing worked.
I also tried a software named umbrella to stop the recovery mode. Nothing.
I pressed power button and home button for 10''. Nothing.
iPhone still reboots like a fading pregnant cow, it is still in recovery mode and I still get this 1015 error...

10.4.10 update and very strange problem with Mac Mini

I have just updated my Mac Mini Intel and I am having a strange problem.
My Mac Mini has problems booting up. Sometimes I get through the login screen as normal but my wallpaper shows and there are no desktop icons, no dock, no top of screen finder menu bar. Some other times I get stuck in the progress bar of the booting up.
I tried to run utilities from install disk and there were no problems detected.
The VERY STRANGE thing is that several times now as I put my fingertip onto the power button laying it on the button but not pressing it yet (because I would like to shut down the system), the system kicks in and becomes unfrozen!!!
Someone in the 123macmini.com forum says that this problem is related to the airport receiver which is near the power button.
What do you think about it???
MacBook and MacMini Mac OS X (10.4.10)

ok, I have found a kind of fix for the problem, although may run a hardware test to check something!.
I unplugged all USB and Firewire devices, I turned off Bluetooth and Airport, reinstalled the 10.4.10 combo update, when it restarted the starting mac osx screen took barely a second or 2 to load (my comment above is becuase from when I first got it on Sunday I noticed it was slow to boot up, also noticed that the screen resoulution I have set does not kick in until I log on, although this may be becuase this mac mini is an intel one). The computer booted up very quickly and I tuend on bluetooth and airport with no issues and plugged all the usb and fireware devices back in. I again turned the airport off and restarted and again it booted up very quickly logged on and swithced the airport back on. I decided to reboot with the sirport on and it got stuck at the end of the os x starting up screen, I waited a few mins switched it off and on again and it booted up fine although slower. I dont mind turning the airport off when I power down as the mac usually stays on anyway. I assume Apple will release a fix for this as a lot of people seem to have the problem so think I will stay put with this for the time being. It was taking a several goes to get to the login screen before but usually got there every few boots.

Very strange problem with sound in dvd player

I have a strange issue which I am cannot resolve. I recently purchased season 2 of NYPD Blue on dvd, region 1 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00008YGRR/qid=1151702794/sr=1-3/ref=sr13/103-1409159-4182204?s=dvd&v=glance&n=130). The season is spread over several discs. The region of the dvds is the same as that of the superdrive on my 1.25 factory spec 15” pb running 10.4.6.(always has been region1) On playing the dvds in dvd player, the sound is very quiet, and you can hear a slight hissing noise (picture is fine). However, if I set the balance of the speakers in system preferences to the left (as far as I can) the sound becomes louder and the hissing disappears. Hence the sound is normal, other that the fact that it is unbalanced. The same happens if I set the balance to the right. Hence the hiss is only there when the balance is set to the centre or around it i.e. slightly to the left or right. This problem is true of all the dvds in the set.
Fair enough, the nypd discs are defective.
However, I then played them in a standalone dvd player without any fancy sound settings etc and no problems at all. Hence I then thought that the problem was with my pb - the only different thing I have done lately is use handbrake to put some of my other dvds (not these NYPD ones) on my iPod, so I thought that handbrake had done something (although I don’t know see how it could have done anything). However, today I tried some other commercial dvds in my pb (produced by the same company) and they sounded fine as has been the case for over two years. Hence, there is something about the nypd blue dvds which affects the quality of the sound output in my pb when the balance is centred. However, whatever this is it doesn’t seem to bother standalone players, nor is it something that anoth of my other dvds have.
Any ideas on what exactly is going on here, as it has me stumped.
(I don't have any other season of nypd blue, so I can't see if these have the same problem as well.)
