Thanks so much but none of that helped.  It was driving me crazy because it would back up another external drive.  I just changed the name of the drive from iPhoto/iTunes Library to Media Libraries and IT WORKED!! I guess for some reason it didn't like the drive being called iPhoto or iTunes ???? I don't understand but I have tried so many solutions and exchanging things out but the name change did it????!!!
Thank you for your help and replying to this.  Guess I made my own issue!

Somehow my iTunes app has been put into the trash.  How can I get this and all of the stuff that was in it back to my Application folder?  I try to drag it out of trash, but it won't work.

Also, when I do try to drag it out of the Trash to put it back into Applications (on the Finder sidebar), it asks me to authenticate with the administration password.  I enter it, and then a window appears saying that I can't do that because I do not have permission to modify iTunes.  Please help.

  • "Time machine error, The disk image cannot be mounted" What can I do??

I ran the time machine. Then, "preparing backup" showed up for a long time. After that, a window pop out: "Time machine error, The disk image cannot be mounted" What is disk image? What can I do (I can't back up anything)
P.S. I use time capsule for backup. there were no problem on connection

I'm having the same issue. I do not have TC as my base station. It says right in the book that if you choose, you do not have to have it run as your router, just as a part of your existing wireless network. All software is up to date and I have already shortened the name of both my TC and TC disc to 6 characters and no spaces! I've already spoken with someone today about this. He really didn't know. Have tried backing up both wirelessly and directly connecting with an Ethernet cord. I had to finally call because when I attempted to register the product to get online support, apple.com didn't recognize the serial number!!! The gentleman on the phone got it registered for me. I bought the TC from an official apple store and for whatever reason when he put in the serial number his computer said that this TC was so "old" I guess that there was technically "no support." That basically means that even though my parents just purchased this for me a week before Christmas, that it was made a year ago and the warranty is not good?? I need to do more research on that. Right now I am very unhappy about this. I am a firm apple user and have been for years, but this is frustrating.
I had read somewhere else (not sure I've been searching apple for what seems like forever now) to make sure that the TC was showing up in "devices" of the Finder. Mine doesn't show up there, but rather in the "Network" window. Is this an issue? If it is, can anyone tell me how to fix that. I have Time Machine backing up to my TC, so I do not see why it would be.
UPDATE: I just opened up my TC on the "Shared" section of the Finder window and deleted the old "sparsebundle" (I had no clue that anything had backed up way back at 3:30pm on Dec 29) and now I get a slightly new message: Time Machine Error: The backup disc image could not be created." So now the word "mounted" is replaced with "created." This error showed up a lot sooner than the original one. Ok, no clue. I am going to try to Change the Disc again, and try again. I will post another update.

  • Can I use Time Machine to retrieve mail that was in Trash on my MacBook Air, after I emptied Trash?

Can I use Time Machine to retrieve mail that was in Trash on my MacBook Air OS X Yosemite, after I Emptied that Trash?

Interesting question. I don't think you can because Time Machine would have deleted the data in subsequent backups because it was removed from the computer. But you never know about these things until you actually try it, which I've never done. So, why don't you give it a try. Worst that can happen is it's not there and you're no worse off than now.
If you need help with restoring mail from Time Machine: Please visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine. Also open Mail and select Mail Help from Mail's help menu. Search for 'restore mail' and see if you don't find some instructions there, too.

  • Why does my iMac (with Mountain Lion) no longer recognize my external hard drive I have used as a back up via Time Machine after the hard drive was accidentally unplugged?

Why does my iMac (with Mountain Lion) no longer recognize my external hard drive I have used as a back up via Time Machine after the hard drive was accidentally unplugged?

Do you mean the external hard drive is not mounted on the iMac desktop?
Check if Disk Utility sees the drive. Applications / Utilities / Disk Utility. If the external shows up in the left column, select it and click on Mount.
If it does show up this way, I recommend using DU to Repair Disk.

Please read this: Find your serial number quickly
Also, please consider a safer method of retaining your serial numbers in the future (for all software, not just Lightroom)

Why is Time machine saying backup disk disconnected? Using MBP 17" Lion 10.7

Do you have an external drive connected?
If you do has it gone into sleep mode? There is a setting in the OS to put drives to sleep if they aren't being used. Energy Saver "Put the hard disk to sleep when possible".
Also most external drives have a built in sleep function that if they aren't being accessed for a period of time they go to sleep by themselves.

  • Can Time Machine Backup a Disk that has OS 10.4.11 On it?

I have two startup disks on my computer. One starts up with OS X 10.5.2, and the other starts up with OS X 10.4.11. I also have a third disk that I use as the Time Machine backup disk.
If I have started up with OS X 10.5.2, can I backup the disk that has OS X 10.4.11 with Time Machine? Does Time Machine create a backup that can restore the OS X 10.4.11 disk, operating system and all?

I think you guys are right! One key is that I now understand can't restore a Tiger system from Time Machine. Thanks. I totally missed that.
My 10.4.11 "Tiger" system is on my MacBook internal drive, and my Leopard system is on an external drive. What I am going to do is:
Use Time Machine to back up "Leopard", but not "Tiger"
I'm going to back up "Tiger" using Retrospect. Then use Restore in Disk Utilities to make a copy of the "Tiger" disk on an external firewire drive. I believe that this disk can be a startup disk, if I so choose.
Next move the "Leopard" disk to the Mac Book internal drive. I can use either "Restore" or "Time Machine" to do this. I think "Restore" is the way to go, because I won't have to insert the "Leopard" install disk.
When I am finished, I will have "Leopard" on the MacBook, an external drive, and Time Machine. My old Leopard disk will be archived by Retrospect, and will also reside on a bootable firewire disk.
    Whew!
What do you guys think about this?
Thanks for the help, and I think there is a possibility of screwing up when you have two operating systems on two different drives on the same computer. I especially follow your logic on Time Machine being designed for Leopard and not Tiger. Thanks for the clear thinking.
Long term I am going to have to devise a better method of safely upgrading operating systems while at the same time keep my old stuff available. Time Machine seems to be the perfect solution for that delima.

  • When installed LION I lost all MS Office Docs, iTunes, iPhoto and ???

I lost all my docs and it unauthorized me on old files and shot them deep into the bowels of the hard drive. Did Lion totally screw up my computer during install or can it re configured. My documents no longer has documents. iTunes comes up with none of my 300+ songs and 30 movies. iPhoto lost 7,000 photos.
    HELP!

Well, its on my LaCie external Harddrive that will not work on LION! Thats where. I tried rebooting into 32 mode and I got into it but LaCie still did not work. SOOOOOO I have no back up at this time.

  • Time Machine miscalculates the amount of data to be backed up, and fails.

    Hi.
Situation: After many successful backups, Time Machine spontaneously states that it requires tens of GB more space on the backup volume than the size of the data to be backed up. Total required space exceeds physical size of backup volume, despite the fact that the partially filled source volume is the same physical size as the Time Machine volume.
*Attempted solutions*: Disk Utility check of both hard drives, re-formatting of Time Machine volume (GUID partition map, HFS+).
    Hardware:
    Name : TM volume
Partition Map Scheme : GUID Partition Table
Media Name : Seagate FreeAgentDesktop Media
    Location : External
    Total Capacity : 298.1 GB (320,072,933,376 Bytes)
    Name : Source Volume
Partition Map Scheme : GUID Partition Table
Media Name : Hitachi HTS543232L9A300 Media
    Location : Internal
    Total Capacity : 298.1 GB (320,072,933,376 Bytes)
    S.M.A.R.T. Status : Verified
Background: After a long spell of no backups, and many new items on the source volume, I formatted the TM volume. I then elected to exclude "System files and applications". The process of calculating the size of the excluded files never completed, even after hours of calculation. I cancelled this option, and selected the directories to exclude manually. I initiated a backup.
This setup worked for a few weeks. A day or two ago, I was told that TM did not have enough space on the backup volume. This was strange, since the size to be backed up reported in the "Options" panel was less than the total size of the TM volume by a large margin.
I formatted the external TM drive again, selected the drive, and initiated a backup.
TM failed, stating that it required 319.0 GB for the backup, but that 297.6 were available on the backup volume. However, there are about 295 GB of used data on the source volume, and the Options panel showed that an amount several tens of GB less than this was to be backed up (about 265.9 GB).

I then opened the Options panel, cleared my manually added files, selected the automatic option of "System Files and Applications", and predictably, it did nothing for a long time.

There is no way to recovery the screen-lock passcode. You have to restore/erase the iPod
Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.
iOS: Wrong passcode results in red disabled screen
If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

    What is wrong with apple?

    Hi there,
According to the article below, the error may be related to a hardware issue. Take a look below for troubleshooting steps.
Resolve iOS update and restore errors
    Check for hardware issues
    Related errors: 1, 3, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 20, 21, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29, 34, 35, 36, 37, 40, 1000, 1002, 1004, 1011, 1012, 1014, 1667, or 1669.
These errors mean that your device or computer may have a hardware issue that's preventing the update or restore from completing.
Check that your security software and settings aren't preventing your device from communicating with the Apple update server.
Then try to restore your iOS device two more times while connected with a cable, computer, and network you know are good.
Confirm that your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers.
If you still see the error message when you update or restore, contact Apple support.

  • HT204053 I tried to download some music to my new computer, when I tried, it said that the apple id was used before on 5 other computers. The computers it was used don't work any more. What do I do ? I don't want to lose all the music I purchased.

I want to know how to remove other computers from i tunes that are no longer working.

    Hello DJSmithLaner,
Thank you for the question.  It sounds like you have authorized five computers, but you no longer have access to all five computers.
You can deauthorize all the computers associated with your Apple ID and then authorize the computers you still use.
Use these steps to deauthorize all computers associated with your Apple ID:
    Deauthorize all computers
After you authorize two computers, you'll have the option to deauthorize all computers for your Apple ID. You can deauthorize all computers once a year. You should deauthorize all your computers in these cases:
If a computer doesn't work anymore
If you don't have one of your computers
If you used 5 authorizations and want to authorize a new computer
To deauthorize all your computers, follow these steps:
Click to open your account in iTunes (you may need to sign in with your Apple ID), or follow these steps:
Open iTunes and click iTunes Store.
Click Sign In and enter your Apple ID.
Click your Apple ID and select Account.
    Click Deauthorize All.
The Deauthorize All button appears only if you have more than two authorized computers.
Once you have deauthorized all the computers, use these steps to authorize the computers you have access to:
To authorize a computer, follow these steps:
    Open iTunes.
Choose Store > Authorize This Computer from the menu bar.
You may need to show the menu bar to see this option in Windows. In earlier versions of iTunes, you can access this option from the Advanced menu.
Enter your Apple ID and click Authorize.
You can find those steps and more information at the following link:
iTunes Store: Authorize or deauthorize your Mac or PC

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
