I just installed OS X10.8 on my iMac 2.66Ghz, now I cannot use Apple Works or Photoshop CS and a few other programs.

Is it possible to install OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard on an external HDD so I can boot from it? I would like to reinstall my old programms and files on the external drive so I can access them and work on them as they are an ongoing project.

Just reinstall the backup you made before updating to Mountain Lion. Next time it would pay to check if old software will run on new system platforms. Your issues have been known about and very well documented over the past two years or more. Snow Leopard is still a good OSX and works well for those not willing to update their software programs.

When I try to un-install 4 it tells be to restart / reboot which I have done and nothing changes.
The same happens when I try to download 5.
Also when I click on the Mozilla / Firefox shortcut on the desktop it just brings up a blank white page.

You don't want to update to 3.6.4, trust me. Stay with 3.6.3. If you need to download it again you can find it here:

I have installed iLife a few times and because of photostream, the version on the disc must be updated. Software update usually takes care of it. It sounds like you installed an old version over a new version. I've not tried that.
You have a late 2012 machine, if you open the Mac app store from the dock, you should be able to go to the purchased tab and download/install the right version of iphoto. Honestly, you should not have used that disc on this new of mac or at least only installed iDVD & iWeb but not garageband, iphoto, and iMovie.
If the Mac App Store shows iphoto as installed already, drag the app from your applications folder to the trash and reinstall it again from the Mac App Store. That is the version you need. You may find garageband and imovie have similar problems.

PS. your photos are in your photo folder in your home folder. don't touch those, I'm talking about the app "iphoto" in the applications folder.

I just installed Mountain Lion on my iMac. But In was dismayed to find that my Canon scanner software (Canoscan LIDE500F)no longer works. Nor do any of my MS offce applications. I tried to use time machine to reinstall Snow Leopard (my previous operating system), but unfortunately my time machine backups did not include system software. Also, the original system install disk that came with my iMac would not allow me to install Snow Leopard in place of Mountain Lion. I would appreciate it if somebody could tell me how to solve this problem.

The reason your Office doesn't work is because it is PowerPC code. If you will upgrade the 2004 Office to 2011 Office then that will work.
I don't understand how you managed to get your Time Machine backup to not backup the system.
Now if you still what to downgrade you will have to erase the disk and reinstall Snow Leopard. Most likely all of your application and then restore your data from Time Machine.
To me it sounds like it would be easier to upgrade your software and stay with Mountain Lion instead.

I followed your instructions and installed Developer Suite 10G on Windows Vista Home Premium edition. I have Oracle 11G DB running on the same machine.
Two points, Steve:
1. When I tried to set the maximum virtual memory to 6110 an error message displayed from Windows and told me that I can't set the maximum virtual memory to more than 4096. I set it to 4090 and it worked and I got nothing wrong during the installation process.
2. After installing JInitiator and disabling Java on Firefox I called the http://127.0.0.1:8889/forms/frmservlet page and everything seemed to be OK because the Oracle Forms Services logo appeared and then a successful installation message appeared , but as I clicked (ok) to continue a gray screen appeared inside the browser (like the one displayed when you try to run a Java applet inside a browser) and then I wait to death till something appears but sadly nothing. I just get a blank gray screen inside my Firefox browser.
Do you have any idea what to do to solve the problem?

And why is it a huge hassle every time I try to sign in on the Apple site? With multiple reports that my password is wrong and I have to answer a series of security questions...I've had the same since 1985!

You can freely install it on the MacBook. If you didn't keep a copy of the installer, sign in with the Apple ID you used to purchase it, click on the Purchases tab, and download it from there.

This should solve the problem
Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
It will not erase any of your personal data, just reset the settings.

I had this same problem. Tried everything the internet said including a full restore. Which was terrible. Nothing worked until.....go to general...reset....reset all settings.
You had to go back in and reset anything you customized afterwards, however it does not allow the store to load. Thanks!
