Insert a SIM from a supported carrier.
Where did the phone come from, it sounds like the device has been hacked or jailbroken to be unlocked and updating has re locked to the original carrier. It is also possible that the SIM simply needs to be reseated or replaced.

Hello again, update time.
Finally got to speak to a senior technical advisor at Apple today who was most confused until he back-tracked and double checked all the basics. He then realised that the actual serial number of my original phone (from the proof of purchase I sent him) was different to the one that they had recorded when they made the swap. I think he said it was out by one character and was actually showing as a mobile connected to AT&T (from the States). He said that the replacement phone was then set-up as per the serial number they had typoed into their system as locked to AT&T. The genius who did the swap at Apple Doncaster must have placed an unlock on it at the time in order for my 3 SIM to work at all. Therefore when I restored it, it returned to the settings of the incorrect original phone serial number!
So... Apple tech advisor said he can rectify the records and re-set the factory setting to an Australian iPhone on the 3 network within 12-24 hours. Fingers crossed all is good by tomorrow afternoon.
Thanks for your suggestions though, I had been trying everything to get it to work as I'm sure you know how hard they are to live without once you've got used to living with one!

This is the second time this happens. I was living in the US until April 2011. I moved to Chile and kept using the App Store and the iTunes Store just fine with my US-issued credit card. However, when I accessed my Apple ID from a different device, the store stopped recognizing my credit card information and migrated my ID to the "Chilean" App & Itunes Store (significantly less apps & music... but anyway). I started using my Chilean credit card on the App and iTunes store with no issues. I supposed that the devices catched that I was no longer in the US and that I had to be transferred to the related store (which I think is fine), and that because I was now in the Chilean store I needed to use a Chilean-issued credit card (which doesn't make sense to me, I still don't understand why Apple stopped accepting my US credit card if it is accepted everywhere else in the world online and offline!).
However, yesterday I bought something from my iPad and when today I went to use the app store from my iPhone the SAME THING happened. I got the same request to "update my billing information", I confirmed my Chilean credit card info and, surprise! "Your credit card is not supported by the Chilean app store"...
I don't get it. If I didn't get it the first time, I ended up accepting it an getting over it because ok, I moved to another country and my account was migrated, etc. But now, it doesn't recognize my local credit card in my local store! I tried both my local Visa and my local MasterCard, and none of them worked. It looks like my account will not accept ANY credit card, no matter wheter I try to update the info from my mobile devices, on iTunes, on the Mac App Store, etc.
It has been impossible for me to find any information on what causes this and on how to solve it, and so far I hadn't had any trouble with Apple and hadn't need any support before, but now that I need URGENT SUPPORT, I've come to realize that THEY SUCK at being accessible! There's no way I can contact them! So, please help me!!!!! I need urgent help!!!!

The SIM card not supported message indicates the iPhone you purchased is carrier locked with a U.S. carrier. Only the carrier an iPhone was sold as carrier locked with can officially unlock the iPhone. -

I just updated my 3GS from iOS 5.0.0 to 5.0.1
Since the update, Itunes says that no SIM card is detected, and the iPhone says that it cannot be activated. It also obviously does not detect any network.
I tried restarting the phone several times, removing the SIM card several times, but it did not change anything, the SIM is still not detected.You do not need to keep posting the same thing over and over again.

I just updated my iphone 3GS on itunes. It deleted my ipod on the phone as well as in itunes. My music is still in the library, but no ipod under devices. Does anyone know what happened and how to get either or both back?
Did you fail to import your photos before updating? If so, then they are likely gone. You can try restoring from backup. If that fails then they are gone. You should regularly import photos to your computer, most especially before any update.
Did you fail to transfer any purchases on iphone ( that were not on your computer) to your computer before updating? If so, then you will have to redownload:

Downgrading the iOS is not supported, and likely has caused the problems you are experiencing.

Typically this indicates a device that has been hacked to be unlocked or jailbroken.
If that is the case, no support can be provided here. -

To expand on Rudegar's comment, often, updating a jailbroken or hacked phone will permanently brick the phone.
If your phone was jailbroken or hacked to unlock it, it is now most likely completely useless. -
Just updated my iPhone 5s from ios 8.1 to 8.3. After the install it asked for Apple ID and password and to allow it to sync to Mac and iTunes. After following the steps my phone kept restarting - turning on and off and goes blank. How do I fix this??
I have had about 9 iOS devices at work do this.
The fix and it will wipe out anything on your iphone is to connect it to your computer and have the latest version on iTunes open. Hold the Power/Sleep and Home button till it blanks out. Keep holding the home button untill it says recovery mode on the screen of the computer and do a restore. -

Hello, i really need help. I had just updated my iphone 3gs to i.o.s. 6.0.1, and after I updated, it won't activate.I tried it in itunes and it always says " We cannot activate your iphone at this time..." and when I activate using Wi-Fi, it says, "Your iPhone cannot be activated because the activation server is temporarily unavailable." I could swear that my Wi-Fi is fine, and my Itunes is on the latest version. Is this a bad thing or does this normally occurs? Can I still fix this ? Do not take it to a third party repair shop - downgrading causes problems and voids your warranty.
I had to unlock it so that i could really use it as a phone.
And that is the root of the problem. Unless you had your carrier unlock it, it was hacked and cannot be legitimately activated. Even if you don't care about warranty or problems, downgrading simply will not help an activation issue. -

Sorry, but Apple does not provide a downgrade path for iOS.
Because downgrading is unsupported by Apple we cannot discuss it on these forums, but you can use Google to find information on how to install an older version of iOS on any device.
Note that you will void the warranty and loose official support by Apple.
