I have seen this message after upgrading both the iPhone 5S and the iPad 3, when upgrading using a USB connection to iTunes. Is that, what you have been doing?
In that case disconnect your iPhone, start the setup on the iPhone and connect it again to your Mac restore your data.

The message you describe is usually presented when a phone that has previously been jailbroken, hacked or otherwise been altered in an unauthorized manner. Resolution
Perform the following steps if you receive one of the messages above:
Restart the iPhone.
Try another means of reaching the activation server and attempt to activate.
Try connecting to Wi-Fi if you're unable to activate using a cellular data connection.
Try connecting to iTunes if you're unable to activate using Wi-Fi.
Restore the iPhone.
If you receive an alert message when you attempt to activate your iPhone, try to place the iPhone in recovery mode and perform a restore. If you're still unable to complete the setup assistant due to an activation error, contact Applefor assistance.

If it was jailbroken, contact the developers of the jailbreak.
Not all jailbreaks can be completely removed.
Google may provide some direction. -

That's almost always because the phone was hacked to illegally unlock it.

Generally this is a sign that the iPhone had previously been
hacked/modified/jailbroken and the update relocked it to the
original wireless carrier. If this is the case, only that wireless
carrier can unlock your iPhone. You must contact them to see
if they offer unlocking and if you qualify.

What wireless carrier did you use before this problem?
Does the app Cydia appear on your iPhone?
What does it say when you look at Settings=>General=>

That's almost always because the phone was jailbroken r hacked to unlock it.
Discussing jailbroken / hacked phones is forbidden by the terms of service. You'll have to find an answer elsewhere or buy a new phone. -

Same deal. I was getting Error 3194 then I got the we're unable to contact servers thing. I've had tons of issues with iPhone software lately and enough so on my last 2 devices to have it replaced by a new iPhone that continues to act up as of now. I've had issues with updating apps on the phone and now updating to new versions of iOS since 4 came out. Apple has not been helpful in this situation and now want $30 just to help since they don't allow AT&T access to help. This is getting to be such a pain and def a reason I don't want the next iPhone if this is the kind of service I'm getting.
