I keep on getting this error when i try to copy files to my 2T Time Capsule, Please help im running out of space on my MacBook Pro....
The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)

I would get an external drive today and copy all your stuff off the TC.. forget trying to load more onto it. There is a good chance after 3years (A 2TB should be only about 2years tops), the disk or the TC itself is on the way out. Do it immediately. If TM is also failing to backup you need to recognise symtoms of impending doom.
Unfortunately the error messages are archane and it is hard to discover their meaning.
You also cannot verify a network drive.. you can verify the TM sparsebundle though so do that.
A5. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Reboot the whole network from off.. certainly if you run later OS it can simply lose the drive..
If you still fail to be able to copy to the TC.. then get that external and copy off it. Tell us if you can do that.

The permissions are fine, and I have trashed the finder plist and reset the NVRAM.
    Anyone have a answer?
    Thanks

Tips I received so far (thanks to A-Mac via Twitter http://www.a-mac.nl and Remco Kalf http://www.remcokalf.nl/)
    - make sure you have at least 10% of your harddisk in free space (I had only 5%).
    - do a PRAM-reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379)
    - perform a hardware test (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509)
    - make a complete backup (with for example Carbone Clone Copier, see http://www.bombich.com/)
    - after complete backup: use diskwarrior (boot from Diskwarrior DVD, first perform diagnostics, then perform "Rebuild" which rebuilds your file directory).
So far I only cleared up some space on my HD, and already the problem occurs less.
Still, I will go through the other tips too.
    (will post progress)

  • The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)

I have a Seagate Central 3tb NAS (latest firmware) attached to my wireless router (Netgear wndr3400v3).  I have a late 2011 macbook pro with Yosemite on it.  When I go through finder to use my NAS I keep getting "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)" .  I only get it when I am trying to copy a big folder with other folders and files with in.   I can copy a single file or create folders.  If i try to copy a folder with 100 pics in it then I get the error.  I can create the folder on the NAS and select all 100 files.  When I drag them to the NAS, then they copy with no problems.  Every so often my time machine has an error and says that it has to create a new backup. I read some where to make sure that "put hard disk to sleep when possible" should be selected in the energy saver in preferences.  Still no luck.  A can also drag any file from the NAS back to my laptop or view them from the NAS with no problems.
Thanks for any help in advance.

    Hi there,
Well I have exactly the same problem! Recently I reset my WD My book White light (2 x 1TB RAID disk), due to the fact that the disk ran full because of TimeMachine.
I reset the disk, and now I can only write some files to it, but most give this error code.
I wrote to WD, but they could not give an answer.
Q: did you update the firmware? Maybe that is causing the problem, in that it is maybe not consistant in the filesystem?

  • External hard drive networked via AirPort Extreme gives "The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)" roughly every two days

My lab has about 10 Mac computers.  We all access a central hard drive by the way of wifi provided by AirPort.  It's just a regular external hard drive (Seagate Desktop Drive) that I turned into our central storage space by plugging it into AirPort (USB).  It works pretty well.  We seem to be fine with viewing the file directories, opening files, saving, deleting etc., for a day or two.  But then after a day or two, when when trying to modify files or move new files onto the central hard drive, we get the error message: "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)"
Any suggestions as to what may be causing this problem?
All of the computers are 2011 iMacs & MacPros.  The AirPort is 802.11n WiFi.  The hard drive is a Seagate USB 3.0 Desktop Drive.
    Thank you for your insight/suggestions.

Thanks for your reply.  I agree about the communication issue. Let me explain my setup and what I am trying to do and perhaps you can answer my questions or make suggestions.
I have a MAC Mini with a Sony TV for the video monitor.  The  Mac Mini is hard wired to the AE (Airport Extreme).  The AE has a 2 TB HD hooked up to the USB Port.  I have a 17" Mac Book Pro on the WIFI Network.
I am trying to use the MAc Mini as a "Media Server" of sorts.  Once I get iTunes running the way I plan I am goign to hook up my Apple TV (2nd Generation) to my television downstairs.
What I am trying to accomplish is have iTunes on all my computers look to the External HD on the AE for the files.  This is why I am having my (-50 errors).
So far I have noticed that if I go and try to download from iTunes purchased videos that are not ont he computer (to the external HD) it will also occassionaly give me teh -50 error.
Is there a way to change where the files go when I download them?  Say I want to download videos to the computer but not to the external HD?  However I would want to still be able to move them to the External HD.

  • What exactly is this: The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50).

When I try and create a new folder on an external hard drive or copy files I get this: The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)
    WHY? What does this mean?

Linc. Only one hard drive displays this -50 problem. It is plugged directly into the computer but even though the answer i got (the link) only referenced iTunes, I DID unplug the hard drive and REplug into another port ON THE COMPUTER and even though it still is sllow to open when i click on it, the other problem seems fixed. Does all this mean the hard drive or (new) enclosure is faulty? In your opinion?

  • I tried to empty the trash, full of back up file from my hard disk and it just says: "The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8003)"

I have an external hard disk of 319.73 GB that I use as back up memory and where I put all the movies and other files that I can't leave on the computer as they occupy too much memory space . One day I was deleting all the previous dated back up to have more space on it , but had to stop the trash for doing it cause it was taking too long and now every time that I try to empty the trash it just says "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8003)" and even if I press CONTINUE it won't empting it . I'm not really pratical with this things and I tried already to find out the solution here and on Google but apparently nobody ever had a similar error code and I don't know what else to do.
    I've a MacBook Pro with a Mac OS X 10.6.8 Version.
Thanks again for the help and sorry if I did some english mistakes !

    Don;
Plus all of you that have tried to help me with my 'empty trash' problem.  I have it solved!
I am running a Western Digital external hard drive.  I phoned them just now and they asked me to unplug the WD drive, and I reset the back up occasions, it was backing up every hour, which was way too often. The trash emptied when I unplugged and now I have rebooted and the trash is still empty
Thanks to all who gave me suggestions as to what I needed to do to empty my trash can!  It had more than 1600 items living there.  What a relief.

  • The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8060).

    Hi,
I want to copy a folder from desktop to my document (or anywhere else on a MAC) I got this error "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -8060)." everytime at the same position when it's about to finish (sth like 75%).
I have MBPR + Mountain Lion and the folder is a Xcode project if it helps.
BTW there is nothing in trash.
    Thanks

Thanks but I solved this problem with this tip:

Re: Error when trying to copy one of my folders, or compress it in the finder
Aug 11, 2012 12:41 PM (in response to Maziyar)
I found some subdirectories within my Project folder that were complete duplicates of other directories. After deleting those, I no longer had the error.  I don't know where they came from, but think they may have been created after an upgrade, say from Xcode 3.0 to 4.0 but don't remember.  Anyway, don't know any more about it, only that it went away after I deleted those duplicate subfolders.  Good luck !
I found unlimited folder in folder in my Xcode project folder that made the size from 285MB to 1.5G. It was that duplicate folders made this error.
I removed and it solved the problem.
    Thanks

    Hi Everyone,
I am keep getting this error when I try to copy a file or folder to my desktop even though I can create a new folder on desktop. I have tried copying a single file and folder with multily files in it but still getting same error.
I have multiple machines (Mac Pro) which are giving me same error and all of them has same Lion OS X (10.7.4). I have repaired the disk permissions but that would not fix this issue.
    Any suggestions/ideas/thoughts ?
    Thanks,

Unlike the original Mac OS, Mac OS X has a system of preference storage that involves a programmer-friendly, user unfriendly construct, the plist. Plist is short for "property list".
With fairly regular frequency, these preference files or "plists" get corrupted under Mac OS X. Worse, the corruption is largely undetectable with plists. This means that the plist file can become corrupted, the operating system facilities can't tell, the application tried to read the plist and digest the data, the corrupted data gets into the app, the app malfunctions, no clue as to why except some crazy error code that was eventually generated within the app because of an operation that went bad because a long time before, there was undetectable garbage read in from the plist file.
Ok, here is the good news. The preferences or plist files can be deleted and the worst case is that you lose some of your app settings you modified, usually through the "Preferences" menu item under the menu named after the app. In this case the menu is named "Finder" and the item is "Preferences".
By deleting the file, you remove the corruption, the app (Finder) recreated a default plist the next time it is run (for Finder, that typically means reboot unless you do some command line work). New plist is clean, you can reset the preferences, Finder is ok until it happens again.
I posted my solution because it was the third time it had happened to me last year and figured others were having the same issue, and the same frustration with "google it" style answers ;-)
But before you go looking for an app that helps you detect corrupt plists, know that I have never had any of them work due to how the plist is designed. It has been a manual (and regular) effort since the inception of Mac OS X. This is one of the system's Achilles heals.

  • The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -1407).

I was wondering what this means? I waas able to download videos to my computer, but am now unable to take them off my IPod Nano (Gen 5). How can I do this as I keep getting this message when ttempting to do so.

There are a lot of people that get this error as it can be caused by a number of different reasons. What I would suggest is rebooting your computer to close any open programs that may be accessing the files on your ipod. Then unplug the iPod and power it off. After it's off power it back on then plug it back into your Mac and try again. This time don't open any other programs besides iTunes.
