I am using memorex CD-R's and have tried with 4 times with different CD's. Is this a software or hardware problem? Any info would be awesome

Export the photos to a desktop folder, right click on the folder and burn to disk - see if that is any different

  • Backing up purchases fails due to repeated "medium write errors"

I was trying to back up my iTunes store purchases to single layer DVD-Rs on my MacBook using the laptop's installed Matshita DVD-R UJ-857 drive. Of the six discs I inserted, I was only able to burn to two, and so I canceled the back up. Granted, the problem could be that I just got a bad box of discs, but a 66% failure rate seems a bit high even for budget discs.
I really suspect that it is an iTunes issue because of what I see in the status display as the back up proceeds. I was able to accurately predict if a particular write would fail or not by watching the burn status window. On the two discs that succeeded, the status begins with "...initializing" and then lists each title as it is burning to the disc. Finally, it says, ...finishing. This could take up to an hour." That's a successful disc. An unsuccessful disc goes immediately from "...initializing" to "...finishing" without any indication that it attempted to burn anything to the disc.
I've got some other discs here that I might try to see what happens, but in the meantime, I was wondering if anyone here has had a similar experience or has some tips on getting this to work. I did a quick search of the posts here, but I may have missed something.
It also occurred to me that the problem could be with the drive. I have an external drive that I could use. Do you know if iTunes will burn purchase back ups to an external burner?

Okay, I've done a bit more research on this problem, and it appears to be pretty common. Of the discussions I've seen here and on other sites, I've seen three common themes to the responses: try burning a DVD/CD in the Finder to see if the drive will burn something at all, try a different brand of DVD/CD and try setting the burn speed to some slower value.
I've burnt a DVD in the Finder using the same brand of DVD-Rs that I was using in iTunes, and it went without a hitch. This suggests, but does not prove, that the problem is with iTunes and not the drive or media.
I haven't tried burning with a different brand yet. If it works, it'll take about 9 hours to complete (18 discs x half hour a disc), and I haven't had that kind of time yet. (Maybe today.)
I have not been able to try changing the burn speed because I can't find a burn speed option under iTunes -> Preferences -> Advanced. Is there something special I need to do to make this option come up? (I'm using iTunes 8.0 (35).)

  • Im trying to burn a cd from itunes, I keep getting a message that says "the attempt to burn a CD failed because of a medium write error" any help would be appreciated

hello, I'm trying to burn a playlist from itunes to a cd, but I keep getting a message saying "the attempt to burn a CD failed because of a medium write error" can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong. I'm not so tech savvy so any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

I'm not familiar with this error, but check the following:
-Is your disc a CD or a DVD? You want a CD, not a DVD.
-Is the CD blank? You'll want a blank one.
-Maybe the disc is scratched and cannot be used. Try another CD.
-Maybe your disc burner is broken. If you have another, try it.

Then try to use a different brand of DVD or at least a different batch of DVD. The disk may be defective.

  • Burning playlists from my iTunes to CD doesn't work anymore. Keep getting a "medium write error" message.  What does this mean?

I'm trying to burn playlists onto a cd from itunes.  I keep getting a "medium write error" message.  What does this mean?  I heard that this may mean that I should try burning at a slower speed.  I tried this and that didn't help.  I also heard that I may need to use a different brand of CD-R disc.  I have not tried this yet.  I also heard that it could be a software issue or disc drive issue.  I recently updated my macbook pro software from tiger to snow leapord.  Do you think this could have affected my itunes playlist burning capabilities?  Thanks for the help.

A system upgrade should not have affected anything. When did you notice the loss in functionality?
Try different media.  2011 post on optical media - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2754858&
Apple Portables: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1411
Realize that a MBP that came with Tiger is an old computer and optical drives do not last forever.
You could try a drive cleaning disc to remove dust.  Don't be overly optimistic. I suspect it is an old drive issue.

  • "Medium Write Error" when trying to burn a CD!!!!

I keep getting a Medium write error when trying to burn an audio cd using ITunes. I already tried switching out cheap CD-R's for high quality ones and the same thing happens. I also can't burn a picture CD using finder because another error message pops up so i don't know what it could be... Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Could be an issue with the drive itself, especially if you have one of the Matshita drives installed in many Macbook Pro which are reported to be 'krappy' drives. See here for more info...

Have you tried using a different brand of optical disk? (You don't say whether you are doing CDs or DVDs.) Some are better than others.

I had been getting this all morning and checked other messages from the community. THe one which worked was trying a different brand of disc.

  • I get "medium write error" when trying to burn cds

I tried to burn a playlist from iTunes and it burned one copy, then when I tried to burn a second copy my computer made alot of noise during the "initializing/finishing" stage, spit the cd out and said "medium write error" - i've tried another cd, and tried burning another playlist with the same results. Any idea what's wrong or if there is anything I can do about it???
    Thanks

First, try quitting all other applications except iTunes.
Second, try burning at a slower rate.
Then try a different brand/batch of CDs.
I believe the default burn setting is 'as fast as possible'.
Today I got perfect results at 20x or slower on my mid-2007 Core2Duo MacBook SuperDrive, and about 1 out of 3 at 24x and faster with a major brand name media labeled 'up to 52x'.
Yeah, it takes a little more time to burn each disc, but if you only have a 50% success rate with a faster speed, you're not really saving any time.
The reason I suggest quitting all other applications is that heavy CPU use seems to diminish my burn success rate on all of my computers, including the Windows boxes. Your mileage may vary.

It's an error message returned by the burner. You can see the full list of these error messages here
    <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Key_Code_Qualifier>
It's not specific enough to pinpoint what caused it—it could be anything from a bad optical medium (CD-R) to a dusty or dying laser diode. You have to isolate the problem—use a different CD-R brand, try a different speed, use a different burn engine (eg, Burn), etc. If it occurs once or twice, randomly, it's more likely to be a bad disc. If it occurs consistently, and at the same stage of the burn process, it's more likely to be a drive or software issue.

  • "Medium Write Error" when trying to burn DVD

i have recently been receiving the message "medium write error" every time I try to burn a DVD in my mac book pro 13 inch  It doesn't matter which program I use to burn, they all give me the same (or similar) message. I also tried booting into Windows and burning from there using ImgBrn it and it was
    succeed
the program went from "preparing disk" to writing to  "finishing", ejected the disk and made the usual error and it looks like it don't start writing as when i put the dvd back the dvd is still empty
I used to burn these disks perfectly well with no problems, before i install lion i don't know if this is lion problem or what
i also tried to attempt to reset the PRAM.  by holding down CMD+Option+P+R while booting MBP and waiting until it chimes a second time to let go of those keys.i haven't changed anything so don't understand why the error occurs. I've bought a lens cleaner disk and ran that for 2-3 minutes and repaired permissions on the HD but that didn't work either. The drive works flawlessly reading DVDs and CDs with no problem no problems.
any one can help please ????

    Sorry, I'm afraid I don't understand this.

The problem is that it's not relevant if the programmes use the same burn engine (eg, iTunes and Finder). You need to test apps which do not use Apple's burn engine, eg, cdrdao, cdrecord, Burn, LiquidCD, Disco, Roxio Toast, NTI DragonBurn, etc. But, FWIW, my bet is not on a software issue.

  • How can I burn cds if I keep getting Medium Write Error?

I have tried burning several CDs, mostly Memorex and Sony. I've never really had problems before but now I do. I tried at first with maximum speed and it just tried to burn and then ejected it saying "Medium Write Error". Next I tried SEVERAL different burning speeds. Sometimes I would get the same error message, and other times it would act like it burned it but when I tried to play the songs on the CD it just skipped through all of them as if they didn't burn. Hey guys, having the same problem since the update..... QUITE! frustrating after a update, I have to admit.
Anyway so no burn button in Itunes but the option is there to "burn playlist" in file tab. Once I have started the burn at maximum speed 24x on Itunes around three times, Burn app and Toast after about a minute error would pop up saying problem *medium write error* then finished on all three apps. I tried around 3 cds on each app.
I opened my *system profiler* then *disk burning*it asked me to insert a blank disk and click refresh which is located in view tab. Once complete it showed my write speeds 10x, 16x, 24x. Now open BURN app then select which songs or files etc you would like to burn, drag them across. Click burn select burn speed ONLY SELECT 16x or 8x if 16x is not a option.
_*BURN APP*_ at slower writing speeds seems stable. After a little investigation through out my logs it looks as if certain permissions conflict from old version to new.
I hope this works for everyone!
