Hi Everyone
Please help before I hit my new mac with a sledge hammer!!
I recently lost my ipad and need to change my apple ID. When I go to the ID page it gives me the option of changing any of my details except my ID which does not have an edit button next to it. How can I change the ID itself and would I lose access to my existing apps if I did change it? I have spent hours signing out of every feature on both my mac and iphone but how can i do this from my now lost ipad and would it make any difference if i could? I am very confused and frustrated with all the apple jargon on the help pages and support communities. Please can somebody help by talking english to me??

Why do you want to change the ID? If it's because you've lost your iPad just change the password so that the person now in posession of it can't get into your iCloud account.
If you really want to change the address which forms the ID you can do this at http://appleid.apple.com provided that it isn't an @icloud.com, @me.com or @mac.com address - if it's one of those that would explain why you don't have an 'edit' button and you can't change it.
It you were able to change the ID that won't affect your access to apps since the account itself remains the same, though of course the login has to be changed on every device signed into iCloud or iTunes.
If you are going to change either the ID or the password you must turn of 'Find My iPhone' on any device it is enabled on or you will find yourself in difficulties.

Yes you can as long as the previous owner erased the iPad according to these instructions. If the previous owner didn't do this, contact him or her and ask for their help. If the last owner cannot be reached or will not cooperate, you will eventually run into problems that you will not be able to resolve and you will have a useless brick on your hands.

Try logging in to Apple product registration and if you registered the iPad it should be there with the serial number. If that does not work you can try calling your country support number from http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57 and see if they can help get the serial number...of course they will want proof such as an Apple ID and password.

If you have registered your device, you can go to https://supportprofile.apple.com/ and log into your apple id. Your devices appear there with serial numbers.
Additionally, your serial number is included on the original receipt when purchased at any Apple Online or Apple Retail store, or any Authorized Apple Reseller.

Welcome to the Apple Community.
Firstly, you need to change your details with Apple, Start here, change your country if necessary and go to manage your account.
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your iOS device, you need to delete the account from your iOS device first, then add it back using your updated details. (Settings > iCloud, scroll down and hit "Delete Account")
Providing you are simply updating your existing details and not changing to another account, when you delete your account, all the data that is synced with iCloud will also be deleted from the device (but not from iCloud), but will be synced back to your device when you login again.
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iTunes account on your iOS device, you need to sign out from your iOS device first, then sign back in using your updated details. (Settings > iTunes & App store, scroll down and tap your ID)
If you are using iMessages or FaceTime, you will also need to log out and into your ID there too.

First of all, log out of your old Apple ID on iTunes. Open iTunes and go to Store menu (on the menu bar) > Deauthorize this Computer. Then, go to Store menu > Sign Out, and sign in with your new Apple ID.
After that, open the Mac App Store, and go to Store menu (on the menu bar) > Sign Out. Sign in with your new Apple ID.
Finally, open System Preferences > iCloud, and choose Sign Out. To keep your information, unmark every service manually before. Then, log in with your new Apple ID.
With this, you will have changed your Apple ID on the Mac. You may want to register the iMac with your new Apple ID, so open http://supportprofile.apple.com, log in with your Apple ID and register your Mac. You may have to unregister it from your old Apple ID

Firstly, if you have 'Find My iPhone/iPad/iMac' enabled on any of your devices, turn it off.
Create a new email address, for example at Yahoo or Gmail, or anywhere convenient (or you can use an existing address as long as it has never been associated with an Apple ID).
Go to http://appleid.apple.com and click 'Manage your Apple ID'. Sign in with the current ID.
Where it says 'Apple ID and primary email address' and gives your current ID email address, click 'edit'.
Enter your new address and click 'Save changes'.
Now you will need to go to each of your devices and sign out in System Preferences (or Settings)>iCloud - 'Sign out' on a Mac, 'Delete this account' on an iOS device (this will not delete the account from the server).
Then sign back in with your new ID. Your iCloud data will disappear from your devices when you sign out, but reappear when you sign back in.
I re-iterate: before you start, turn off 'Find My Mac' (or whatever) or you will need the services of Support.
