Macs with a FireWire port will also boot happily from an External drive. You don't even need to open the MacBook.
Some users buy a drive they would like to have as a future Internal drive, and also buy an external enclosure. They get the External set up the way they want it, then swap with the Internal drive.

  • Can anyone recommend a good Mac Calendar, Contact program for the iPhone

Can anyone recommend a good Mac Calendar, Contact program for the iPhone. The one intalled is hopelessly inadequate and inefficient. 2 Main problems- The current iCal + Contacts programs do not link to each other. And there is no To Do List!
Palm and MS Outlook had those features 6 years ago! Whats up with Apple?!!

ical does have a to do list in it. either click the little pin under the calendar, or click show to do list in the view menu.
i don't know much purpose behind needing to link ical and address book (not that i'm saying it isn't important at all - you obviously have some type of need for it). but it's got to be possible somehow, because you can set ical to make a calendar of birthdays from your address book contacts (in the main preference pane for the application).
plus, i doubt there'd be another mac calendar application you'd be able to sync with your iphone, unless whoever developed it developed an iphone app to sync it with. probably wouldn't sync with your contacts/calendar apps that come with the iphone.

  • Can Anyone Recommend Books About Mac and Tiger?

    Hello,
I'm heading back to the homeland for a short visit in a week's time. I'd like to buy a book that can explain a few things about Tiger so I don't always have to visit the Apple Store and bother the Geniuses there.
Can anyone recommend any good books about Mac and Tiger? I know of "Mac For Dummies" but I've never been a big fan of that series. Cheers and thanks.

    Hi, jasperboy.
My "Learning About Mac OS X" FAQ has a number of resources that you will find helpful including books, online training, and more.

  • Internal hard drive failed - install Mac OS X on external firewire?

Hi, hope someone can help me.
The other day my internal hard drive in my MacBook started to click. I did a hardware test, and the drive now doesn't show up at all, either in the test or when I go to install Mac OS X.
Is it possible to buy an external Firewire hard drive, and install Mac OS X on it, even though the internal hard drive isn't recognised?
Here is the external hard drive I was going to buy http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-Premium-External-Firewire/dp/B000F6SGB4/ ref=sr11/203-7120413-7742330?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1174334464&sr=1-1
Also, is there any thing else I need to know before I do this...
I need to boot from an external hard drive as I cannot go to an Apple store to get it fixed and I am not really in a position to send it off for repair, as I am at Uni.
    Thanks for your help!

You need to call AppleCare Support and get the hard drive replaced. None of the MacBooks are a year old yet, so they're all still covered by the original one year warranty. This sounds like a problem that should be covered, why bother with an external drive? If you're not willing to be without it, yes, you can install Mac OS X to a FireWire or USB 2.0 hard drive and run your MacBook from that.
    -Doug
P.S. If I were you, I'd spend the extra £15 and get the 320GB version of that drive. I'd get as big of a drive as you can!

  • Recommendations for an external hard drive I can use for both the Mac and PC

    Hello,
I’ve used PC’s for nearly most of my life, and recently Imade the leap to using a Macbook Pro (the 15” Intel i7) as I got tired of theconstant crashes.  Long story short – Ineed to have a common external hard drive that I can use with both the PC’s andthe Mac I own.  Mostly I need theexternal drive to save my Microsoft Office documents, and family photos (aswell as Mp3’s and other programs).  I’vegone to the Mac Store in town, but I keep getting told that you cannot have acommon external hard drive between the two computers.  I’m just having a hard time excepting that,as I keep reading on Apple’s own website making the sales pitch of how PC userswho switch to a Mac wouldn’t have to purchase replacement hardware.  Are there recommended external drives thecommunity could recommend?  Also, wouldit be best to create a network drive to accomplish my goal? Any advice isgreatly appreciated.

Only one computer can be connected to one drive at a time without a server being involved or a NAS drive.
I don't think your needs are along those lines it's too complex.
Just a external drive formatted exFAT will do between Mac's and PC's.
Swtich the cable and connect to one or the other as needed or get two drives.
There are some hacks floating around that create a portable wireless shared storage so anyone with a wif can connect and share files with at like coffee shops.
Is that what your looking for?

  • HT1349 I had to wipe my hard drive and re-install iTunes on my computer. I don't want to lose all of my old songs by syncing, many of which aren't available for purchase on iTunes, but it says i have to to manually manage music. How can I bypass this?

I really don't want to lose the songs on my phone. Why does Apple have to be so difficult?

That's like saying 'my house caught fire and burned to the ground, so I didn't have the opportunity to purchase a fire extinguisher'.
The iPhone is not a backup device. You can purchase 3rd party software that 'may' be able to extract the music from your phone, but there is no supported method to get music that was not purchased from iTunes off of your phone and onto your computer.

  • Power Mac G4 - 933 - maxium size of second internal hard drive

I have a Power Mac G4 933 Mhz with an existing 60 Gb internal hard drive. I am trying to determine definitively the largest sized internal hard drive I can add in addition to my existing 60 Gb drive.
There are a variety of articles saying 120 Gb is the max, I called Apple Support and they said 80Gb and some places say it can support well beyond 200 Gb.
    Any guidance is appreciated.
    Thanks.

Just to verify my previous post, I am running a Seagate 250GB IDE drive on the internal bus in a 1GHz DP QS with the 4.3.3f2 Firmware and have had zero issues with this set-up.
The drive shows the full 250GB capacity (actually 232.89GB after its formatted).
Its possible that only the 2002 QS (800, 933, 1.0DP) have this ability, as I have not read about any of the ealier QS machines (733, 867, and 800DP) capable of doing this. I believe the 933 QS is ok, so if your firmware reads right, your probably be in luck.
freddythefreeloader, please let us know if you have any success with this. Thanks.

  • Early 2008 Mac Pro:  Add larger internal hard drive?

    ref: Early 2008 Mac Pro
The original tech specs specify the use 4 1T internal hard drives.
Can I use a 2T hard drive in the internal bays instead?

    Hi himacdallas1,
There is no problem replacing one or more of your 1 TB HDDs with a 2TB HDD, or just adding 2TB drives in empty bays, unless you have a raid configuration, in which case all the drives in the set-up should be identical.

  • I upgraded to the new firefox but the old one is working what do I do ?

I downloaded the new version of firefox- click the install and waited-the new folder and icon was on my desktop. Yay, then I upgraded an adobe flash in which I had to shut down everything. Once the computer came back the new firefox was gone and the old icon was sitting in the dock( I didn't know it was the old one until the opening firefox page asked me to upgrade again). I just don't want 5 downloaded firefox's in my HD ( which might be happening too)

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

    Hello,
Only option is upgrading your Mac's OSX, since Apple will not allow iOS to go backwards.

  • Can anyone recommend a print server that will work with Mac & PCs?

Can anyone recommend a wireless print server that will work with Macs and PCs ?

Wireless has a disadvantage for many Powerbooks.  Unless yours supports 802.11g, it is not secure.  So it must support Airport Extreme on the Powerbook to have a secure wireless network.   Also many printers only support 802.11b, making matters worse, as that is not secure.  See my FAQ* on printing:
    http://www.macmaps.com/printersx.html
Some printers have ethernet ports, which would allow you to use a Wireless ethernet bridge that is 802.11g.  Similarly you could use one on the Mac, and then you'd have your wireless printing.  Ask the printer manufacturer what might be possible.  The last thing you want is an insecure network, especially if you are at most 4500 meters/1500 feet from someone who could pick it up and log into it that you don't want.

I have a Mac pro(1 free bay) and a mac mini I need to back up both of them (time machine)  Is it better to use an external NAS HD or an internal hard drive on my mac pro (mid 2010)
What option has the faster GB/s?

Disk drive using native SATA bus interface will allow the drive to copy and always present and ready.
But once you have backup any hourly changes should be smaller and as long as the NAS and your switch should allow enough.
You should always have off line backups and don't rely on just one backup set or just TimeMachine.
WD RED models are designed for RAID and NAS and 7.2k instead of your more standard slower green 5400 rpm green models while still costing less than WD Blacks.

  • HT4718 I want to install a new internal hard drive for my Macbook (13in, Late 2009) and restore to factory settings. However, I want to keep my Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

I want to install a new internal hard drive for my Macbook (13in, Late 2009) and restore to factory settings.  However, I want to keep my Mac OS X Snow Leopard., which I downloaded from the app store. How can I restore computer with the updated OS?

What I did on our two computers was partition the hard drive so that both Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion can be used on the computers. This allowed me to be able to retain/use older applications and games on the Snow Leopard partition. This will allow you to do a clean install of Mountain Lion on the newly created partition. The Mountain Lion installer has a button that allows you to select another drive so you don't install it over Snow Leopard. I cleverly name one partition Snow Leopard and the other one Mountain Lion so I wouldn't confuse the two (I never claimed to be smart).
To partition, you need to have sufficient free hard drive space (I suggest 50 GB minimum). Boot off the Snow Leopard DVD or the disks that came with the computer and use Disk Utility to partition your hard drive into two partitions. If you plan to make Mountain Lion your primary OS, then you can reduce the size of the Snow Leopard partition so most of the free hard drive space is available for Mountain Lion. While booted off the disk, you can install Snow Leopard on the partition you want it on.
Restart and download Mountain Lion, remembering to select the correct partition before installing. I would make a copy of the installer and move it out of the Applications folder because the installer self destructs.
After getting all that sorted out, I found that while booted in Mountain Lion I could access the Snow Leopard partition. That allowed me to drag files and applications from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. Applications that won't work with Mountain Lion will be grayed out with a slash through them.
