Okay, so, fast forward from July to now -
- I've visited my closest Apple store's genius bar twice now. (Over an hour and a half away.)
- My computer spent at least 8 hours behind their closed doors in the workshop
- Several complete erases of the harddrive have taken place
- Most of the Apple geniuses I dealt with were nice and very knowledgeable, but they were and still aren't 100% sure exactly what is wrong with my computer.
The good news is:
- They were able to at least get it running again, with a clean install from their servers of OS X Lion 10.7.5
- They believe that my problems stem from either 1 of 2 things:
        - Faulty Hard Drive (even though it is brand new)
         - The wrong build of software being installed.
Now, while the wrong build does seem like it could be the problem, it doesn't make sense in the aspect that all of the initial problems began when the first hard drive failed. The same problems continued when I changed out the failed hard drive with the brand spanking new one, and only slightly improved when I was able to successfully install the OS that came with the original disks for my computer. I'm not convinced this thing is back to normal, but hopefully I can make it last through getting a shiny new retina Macbook Pro in the coming future. Thank you so much to everyone who read and replied to this post!

    Hello Deb,
Something fishy going on with those particular files. But without looking at them directly I couldn't say what. Usually in a case like this the problem is some of the metadata that is attached to the file. Where did these files come from? A camera, a scanner, the internet?
An explanation about the Watched Folder function: It looks for changes to a folder, not just automatically grabbing whatever files are in it. Generally, you want to select an empty folder as a Watch Folder. Once this has been set up, as you add files to this folder they will be imported into the Organizer. If you start with a folder full of images, those will be ignored, any new items will be added.

  • Any ideas on how I install Lion on a new hard drive

Any ideas on how I might install Lion on a new hard drive when I purchased the OS online from Apple prior to my hard drive failing?       I don't have a disk.

when you install your new drive, what happens? it should boot into internet recovery and you setup from there.
    does it not do that?
here is an article about how to force internet recover http://www.cultofmac.com/106669/force-lion-to-start-internet-recovery-on-your-20 11-or-later-mac-os-x-tips/
here is apple literature about the recovery partition (if you had a hard drive) http://www.apple.com/osx/recovery/
here is a do it yourself downloader that makes a usb stick the recovery disk. If you have data on the usb drive I would back it up, as this will erase everything else on the thumb drive. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1433

  • How to install Windows 7 on new hard drive?

I have changed the old hard drive (500 gb) with a new hard dirve (1 Tera), and now I have two problems: -
    1. How do I install Windows 7 on new hard drive?
    2. My laptop was pre-installed Windows 7 Pro, but all the DVD kit (Application & Drives Recivery Disc + Operating System Revocer), which was provided (by Lenovo) for the laptop is in the Windows 8 Pro. So how do I install Windows 7 Pro, in my laptop while all DVD kits are in Windows 8 Pro?
by the way this is my laptop spec (for reference) ; -
    * Note *
I plan to install Windows 7 Pro in my new hard drive using another Windows 7 DVD (Not DVD provided by Lenovo), but how do I get all the Leveno program which found within the 'Application & Drives Recivery' disc (such as ; - Lenovo System Health and Diagnostics, Lenovo Power Control,Lenovo's Fingerprint Reader) to install in that hard drive? (as I tell you before, all the DVD kit is in or only for Windows 8 Pro)
I hope somebody will help me answer my question,
    Thank You
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    I got the solution;
Answer to question 1 ; using a backup & recovery software to clone my current OS, then transfer to my new hard drive.
Answer to question 2 ; download all the Drivers and software ( all the application that located on the DVD kit that I have) on Lenovo Official Website.
or other solution, send it to a computer service shop and let the experts ( the workers) install it for me ( the most simple and safe way).

  • Installing Mavericks on a new hard drive...

    Hi
My hard drive crashed, and I bought a new one today. They told me at best buy I need to download mavericks drivers onto a usb or something. I'm not really sure what they meant so I thought I would ask here. Where do I go to put Mavericks onto a usb to install it on a new hard drive?
    Thanks

    1. If it shipped with 10.7 or newer, you'll need to go through that OS by following the instructions above, and then install Mavericks in the normal way. If it shipped with 10.6.8 or earlier, reload that OS from DVD and then upgrade to Mavericks.
    2. The computer's firmware contains instructions for connecting to the Internet.

wait until you reach the limit of five authorized machines. then, once a year, you will be able to deauthorize all machines, following which you can reauthorize those computers you currently use/have access to.

  • I purchased mountain lion from apple but never got a disk. How do I install it on my new hard drive, old hard drive failed and is not recoverable according to Apple and Recovery Specialist?

I have a mid 2009 MacBook Pro with newly installed SATA HD + SSD, I can get mavericks download free but I can't recover photos, apps, files etc from time machine (1TB Time Capsule), I think I was running lion when I started backing up on it but I had updated to mavericks before the HD Failure. When I tried to transfer info from Time Capsule it says " no volumes detected" or something to that effect. I had mucho info backed up on that capsule. Any help appreciated, please spell it all out for me if you can help, I am not at all tech savvy and desperate to get up and going as I am an online student with a fast approaching deadline for course paper. Thank you in advance :)

Step 1: Buy a new Hard drive that can be installed in your MacBook Pro later, and an External enclose to place it in for now.
The MacBook Pro before 2010 can not contain the stand-alone firmware to go to the Internet and get a fresh copy of Mac OS X and install it.
You will need a working Recovery_HD, or to drop back to a 10.6 DVD (if it will Boot on your Mac).
There may be a functioning Recovery_HD on your existing Boot Drive. If you were running 10.7.4 or later and Time Machine, there may be a Recovery_HD on the Time Machine Volume.
    To check:
Hold down the Alt/Option key as you restart. This will slowly draw a gray screen and then add an Icon (over several minutes) for each potentially-bootable volume. If any Recovery_HD shows up, take it, and you will be able to get to Internet Recovery and re-download some version of Mac OS X that can be installed on a new drive.
It is generally far quicker to set up a new drive and install Mac OS X than to struggle with only the primitive tools available only on a DVD or a Recovery_HD. Once you get any version of Mac OS X running, you can get some work done and attempt to salvage first your data, then your drive (if either will be possible).
By NOT trying to Boot from and use the possibly-damaged drive, you improve your chances of being able to salvage some files off it, since blocks will not be over-written by running Mac OS X from it.

  • Can I install mac on a new hard drive in my windows computer and get rid of windows completely?

I have a windows desktop computer. Can I install a new hard drive and install ios mavericks on it? In other words, convert my windows desktop to a mac?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You may be able if your computer meets some requirements and if you don't mind putting your PC in risk, but it's not legal to install OS X on non-Mac computers. See the OS X Terms of Use > http://www.apple.com/legal/sla/docs/OSX109.pdf

  • Installing snow leopard on new hard drive - disc not seen or found

I can't provide too many details right now as my hard drive is out, and I'm trying to reinstall an operating system.
Problem:  Installed a new hard drive purchased from reputable repair store. Last installation disc I have is OS X Snow Leopard. When I get to the point to choose where to install it, it is not seeing the new hard drive.  I've double checked that the wires/bar connecting the actual hard drive are snug. Could there be another problem? Something to do with Lion? I've read several forums, but to no avail....
Computer:  Macbook Pro unibody. Probably mid 2009.
OS X: The last one before Maverick... 10.8.5
The reason I am putting in a new hard drive is that my computer was having trouble starting up or unexpectedly crashing, although I could do a Safe start or Diagnostic (d).  So, on the old hard drive, I did PRAM reset, and Disk Utility, but could not run the Apple Hardware Test, so I took it in.  There is a little issue with battery not being full, but they did not think that was causing the problem, and that it was probably a hard drive issue.  With the new harddrive... they suggested trying to download an OS from linking to another computer by firewire.... The other computer, (Macbook 2 GHx intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 10067 MHZ DDR3, OS 10.8.5) does not have a firewire, but does have thunderport, so I tried doing a Target start to reboot...  but Macbook Pro did not read the 2nd computer (Macbook). Then I found my old Snow Leopard disk and here I am...

If the repair store installed the drive, I'd take it back and let them make it work. Take your Snow Leopard DVD also.

  • Installing Windows 8 on New Hard Drive

I am not very computer literate so please bear with me.
The hard drive went bad in m Hp Pavilion 15 Notebook PC last week.  I ordered a new hard drive from H P and installed t this morning.  I found a video online and the installation was quick and simple...a piece of cake!
However, I am now having major difficulties with the intallation of my operating system.  I purchased Windows 8.1 and when I put in the CD it tries to install, I think, but then  I get a message that says  "Selected boot image did not authenticate.  Press <Enter> to Continue. "  I have tried this numerous times and I always get the same thing...and pressing enter does nothing.
I  learned on some of the forums that there is something I may do in bios to change how it boot ups.  However, I cannot get into the bios to make the changes that they say I need to make.
    Please help me!

    Hi,
    Try the following.
    Shutdown the notebook.
Tap away at the esc key as soon as you press the power button to enter the Start-up Menu and then select the Bios Menu ( f10 ).
Under the System Configuration tab, expand the Boot Options Menu.
You need to set Secure Boot to Disabled and Legacy Devices to Enabled.
When done, press f10 and select to save the changes.
You may then have to enter a 4 digit pin displayed on the screen to confirm the setting changes - enter the code and hit enter.
Insert the Windows 8 installation disc and Shutdown the notebook.
Tap away at the esc key as soon as you press the power button to enter the Start-up Menu and then select the Boot Options Menu ( f9 ).
Use the arrow keys to highlight the CDROM (uefi) option and hit enter - if prompted to 'Press any key to continue....' - do so.
    Regards,
    DP-K

  • How can I install OSX into a new hard drive without a CD?

I just installed a new hard drive and I don't have a installation CD/DVD to install OSX. How can I go about install a fresh copy?

Are you able to beg or borrow access to another Mac that has access to the internet & is new enough to use the App store?
You can sign in to your App store account & download the appropriate installer (Mavericks or whatever you have in your account). Then you can make a USB bootable copy of the installer (there are many other guides around)…
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/08/make-a-bootable-mac-os-x-10-7-lion-installer-from -a-usb-flash-drive/
If you can access a Mac but don't want to do the huge download you can use the recovery assistant to create a bootable recovery partition on a USB stick.
    https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1433
When you boot your Mac it will download the OS for installation.
Does the original HD still work? It may be quicker to get a cheap 2.5inch case & boot from that just to get an OS downloaded & installed. It will mean you are not wasting cash & time on 10.6 that is only needed for one App store download.
I'd consider a trip to an Apple store if you have one local, they may drop an installer or recovery partition onto a memory stick for you.

  • Installing Os 10 on new hard drive

How do i install a fresh copy of mac OS 10.. on a new hard drive.. I have the Tiger cd's. I really need to get my mac back up n running.
    Message was edited by: ChinyBwoy

    First prep the drive:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Now proceed with the OS X installation.

    It shuts down? Doesn't restart?
What is the difference in environment from the shop and your place?
Shutting down is normally - still - a sign of the processor turning itself off to protect itself. It's not alive long enough in BIOS, to make you see the temp?
I doubt you keep the computer in the cupboard, but it should anyway have about 50 cm free space in every direction (except downward of course).
Fredrik, The difference between home and shop, I keep the PC in a PC stand at ground level. I could improve its position slightly however, it has been sighted there for aroung eighteen months!  The shop guy didn't seem overly concerned by the 49c temp, (he thought the fan was ok) which increased to around 56c with 1.5gb ram installed. When i tried to get into bios I was probably too late hitting delete key has it went to windows scan! After the problems I'd had last week with my original hard drive I didn't want to take any more risk's! Its seems obvious the cpu temp is affected with the extra ram, any ideas?
    Thanks Pete
