I'm having trouble going back to iMovie 4

The non-destructive editing is killing my hard disk space. I always had good success with iMovie 4 so I want to go back. I tried to install it off the iLife DVD but the iMovie 4 choice is grayed out. Does it not want to install if it sees iMovie HD? Has anyone had success having both versions loaded? I've already updated some of my finished movies to HD so I'd like to run both versions on the same computer.

I like your idea about doing all the editing in 4 and then loading it into HD when complete. I'm going to take that approach.
Don't take my strategy too far, I only suggest iMovie4 for the cropping and deleting.
My most recent project has 33 clips and it is so easy to put the same transition on the full project and then just modify those where one or more clip is exceptionally short or there is a change of mood. iMovie HD saves so much time here.

Same issue here too. I will try reinstalling the firmware update. This has happend to me twice. The only way to correct the issue was to reboot.

I finally figured it out. Needed to update her Airport firmware and allow guest access, and also changed Sharing preferences to Allow Access for All Users.

Having troubles loading videos in iMovie trailers

Imovie has been really great up to now? I tried to create a movie trailer with some videos and I get half way through it and it locks up on me? Wont accept anymore videos? please help. I have the updated ver. 9.0.8 imovie '11

Having trouble playing back GO PRO HD Hero 2 .mp4 video

Im currently running OS X 10.5.8, 2.6Ghz Core 2 Duo, 4GB Ram, 500GB HD 7200rpm.
I just picked up the GO PRO HD Hero 2 Camera and my computer can not play back the 720 or 1080 type videos without having major lag/skipping issues in either QT or FCP. I have tried everything I can think of to speed uo my computer but can't seem to solve the issue. Has anyone else experienced this or have any ideas? It seems like my computer should'nt have any issues playing back these video files.

I'm having trouble updating iPhoto and iMovie.

This has been an ongoing issue that I just get aggravated and stop trying for awhile. Updated to OS X Mavericks and now I can't even access iPhoto. It says this version can't be used with OS X. Everytime I try to update iPhoto and iMovie, I get a message saying it was purchased using another ID. I bought the computer brand new and set it up with the one and only ID I have. iPhoto and iMovie were preinstalled. Anyone have any suggestions? I do NOT want to delete them, pay to download them and then request a refund because I don't want to lose all of my photos. I didn't worry about it much until my husband did the OS X Mavericks update and now iPhoto isn't compatible to even open anymore. Please help!

NO need to re-purchase. Launch the App Store from the Applications folder or dock icon. Follow as the alert instructed, i.e., sign in with your Apple ID and password. Click on the Updates icon (near the top of the App Store window). The Updates window will list iPhoto and iMovie. Click the UPDATE button for each.
Note: This is based on my experience with having iLife 11 on disk prior to getting a new MBP last July.)

Is anyone else having trouble with backing up before 2.2 update?

I downloaded the 2.2 update around 4 PM (eastern), and have been trying to update most of the time in between.
I connect the phone, enter iTunes, and tell it to upgrade. It extracts the downloaded update, and begins backing up the contents of my iPhone. And it continues backing up, with absolutely no progress, forever.
When it goes over 30 minutes without even starting to back anything up, I disconnect it and try again. It did actually begin showing some progress on a sync earlier, but it stalled at about 5%, and didn't move a pixel for an hour.
I'm using a 2G iPhone, not jailbroken, and it's connected to a Macbook with iTunes 8.2.
Could this just be overloaded Apple servers? Has anybody had similar issues, and does anyone have any ideas?

Having trouble with backing up my iBooks and possibly a corrupted file

I have several iPad ebook and PDF purchases that were not from the iTunes store that I would like to backup somewhere, either in the cloud or on my Mac. I cannot figure out how to do this. When I tried syncing books in iTunes, it wants to replace everything on the iPad with what's on my Mac, which would be a disaster. If anything happens to my iPad, I will lose these books. How can I back them up?
In a related question, the issue that started all this was an epub I purchased from LexisNexis, a rather large book (8 mb, thousands of pages). The first time I opened it, it was fine, but after the second time I think the file got corrupted because it freezes whenever I try to navigate anywhere in the book. If the file has gotten corrupted, I have no idea how to delete the book so that I can reinstall it. I have no idea what to do. I know this is technically two questions in one post (sorry) but I'm really at a loss. I need that book, and I'd really like the peace of mind knowing my books are backed up somewhere if my iPad dies. Thanks!

iCloud only syncs contacts in your iCloud group, not contacts from other services such as hotmail. You need to copy or move the contacts from the Hotmail group to the iCloud group in order for them to sync with your iCloud account. If you have both groups in a contact managment program on your computer that is syncing with your iCloud account you can drag and drop them between groups there. If not, you'll need to use an app like Speed Names to do this on your phone.

I'm having trouble adding photos to iMovie '11 (same issue when I was on '09).

I start a new project in iMovie and drag a photo over from my desktop. I see the green line and then drop, the photo does not add. I tried using the media tables and dragging events, albums, and individual photos, but the same thing happens. The only thing I can add is video from my events section. Nothing else sticks.
I did have some issues a few months ago with permissions where I lost all my music in itunes because I deleted a file by mistake. I have tried a verify/repair permissions update in disk utility. The iMovie problem still exists. Open to any suggestions.

Thanks for pointing to that thread wvozzolo. It will be a good idea to set up a new user account and test iMovie when logged into that account. I'm not clear on whether it's best to set up an Administrator account or a Standard account. Perhaps these Apple support articles will help:

Have you tried deleting the preference file, as I suggested above? If that doesn't work, and the new user account doesn't do the trick, perhaps there is a conflict with a QuickTime plug-in. Look in the folder MacIntosh HD/Library/QuickTime for 3rd party plug-ins such as Flip4Mac and Perian (there may be others). Update these to the latest versions and check iMovie again. Otherwise, drag the plug-ins out of the QuickTime folder to the Desktop to see if that helps.

Having troubles playing back songs from imported CD

Ok, I imported a CD using the the button on the top righ corner. It seemed to go very fast, which I found odd. Now I go to play the songs that I imported, and it just cycles through them. It does not play them, It just goes from one to the next. The CD works fine in my car, so that is not the problem. I also burned this CD from iTunes not too long ago, so it should be the right format. I'm stumped.

Anytime iTunes starts skipping songs like the way you have explained means either the file is corrupt or in a format it can't understand. If the files are MP3's you can try playing them in Windows Media Player. If media player can play them from start to end, then iTunes has some issue with them. I say play them from start to end cuz I had a problem with iTunes skipping songs and would play in Windows Media, but when Media player got to the end of the song, it sounded all weird and poppy with a mix of some other song I never heard. thats when I knew the file was corrupt and that was the reason iTunes wouldn't touch it

Server having trouble playing back certain .mv4 or .mp4 files

Hello folks,
I'm really stumped about why certain .mv4 or .mp4 files do not playback well off of the server for my website www.listenup.org -- a large archive of youth media video.
At first, I had a few files that weren't working because there were non-alphanumeric characters in the names. But even after renaming them on the server and in the database, they still sit on the site longer before opening.
I can't send live to the site the videos that really aren't working at all (which I have mostly solved anyway -- users tacking on the wrong extensions or having non-alphanumerics in name), but here are the real mysteries -- the ones that load for a considerable time longer than the others before displaying the download progress bar quicktime playback tool.
All of these videos do work. And by leaving one or another sitting there for about 30sec - 1 min it should appear (and they are pretty good anyhow). At the end of the downloading process, you can right click and use "Save as Source" (these are all on Creative Commons licenses of various sorts).

If there is some processing action that I could do to these to make sure that they load immediately when a visitor clicks on them I will be happy. (Even if the progress is very slow! that's a member's prerogative whether they want to compress video with a larger web visitor community in mind!) I'd rather not rerun these through iTunes or similar to "Convert to iPod" because a) I don't know what I'm doing that is making the files better, and b) it almost always seems to make the files bigger with no perceptible gain in quality. If that is what I should do, though, I can certainly do that and replace these on the server.
Thanks so much for your QT guru-ness. It is times like these that I wish I knew more about quicktime from a developers point of view!

This is very helpful! How do I create .m4v or .mp4 vidoes that "Fast start"? Just changing the extension doesn't work -- and exporting takes time. I'd love another fast solution like this for opening and "Save As" -- that results in the MPEG-4 extensions that my users are expecting. (Yes, QT is a container format, and yes this .mov has the same media H.264 media streams, but we'd like folks to be able to drag these into itunes or similar and get them quickly on iPods.)

At Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup, iCloud Backup is turned on and you can select Back-Up Now below?
If so, what happens when selecting Back-Up Now?

ITunes having trouble going to full window.

When I open iTunes, it doesn't open into the full window. I click the little full window icon, but it just shifts a bit and still doesn't fill up the whole window. Not untill I play with minimizing the page and unminimizing the page does it go into the full window of my computer. Any suggestions?

This'll sound like a cop out but the one area where Adobe provide free support is on installation issues. I'd suggest you ring them and have them talk you through the procedure.
Yeah, maybe it IS a cop out but they can probably sort out any issues in minutes where it could take days of exchanging messages to find something minor.

Having trouble opening connections and reading from Bluetooth devices.

As the title states, I am having trouble opening connections and reading data from a Bluetooth device. We are using a PDA to communicate with LabVIEW. First, the Bluetooth Open Connection VI displays a timeout error half of the time. Second, when it does open, it does not read what the PDA is sending. Third, if it does allow an open connection, it will not do it a second time unless the devices are turned off.
I also have another related question. I am using a Linksys Bluetooth USB adapter, and the driver is proprietary. Labview requires the use of a Microsoft driver, and we are having problems going back and forth between the drivers. What Bluetooth receiver would you suggest using? The reason I ask is the fact that you have Bluetooth examples of client VI's. Therefore, you must use a similar device. Thank you for your time.

I'm not sure what Bluetooth receivers were used to verify the functionality of the VIs. However, I still want to help you solve your issue. Please make sure that you are running the shipping examples and let me know what version of LabVIEW, what PC OS and what PDA OS you are using. Does the Microsoft driver work for your Bluetooth receiver if you uninstall the Linksys driver?
