I need a 320gb hard drive recommendation.

I'm picking up a white macbook in the next few days and want to upgrade the hdd myself. I'll probably get it from newegg.com. Any suggestions? Recommendations from people who are actually using 3rd party hdd's would be great. Thanks!

Any 2.5" SATA notebook drive should work fine. Some are 5400 RPM and some are 7200 RPM drives. The latter are faster. You can choose Seagate, Hitachi, Toshiba, Samsung, or Western Digital. There's not a great deal of difference between drives. You may find some reviews and benchmarks at Bare Feats, Storage Review, and Tom's Hardware Review.

  • I think I need a new Hard Drive

iMovie keeps crashing. Thus, I think I need a new hard drive for my 2001 dual 800 G4 (Quick Silver). Can someone please tell me the best place to buy a new hard drive, how to install it, and then how to transfer everything over to the new one and thus remove the old on.
Thanks so much to anyone that can be of assistance!

    Hi Stuart-
You can buy a good hard drive here:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/3.5-IDE-ATA/
I would recommend the Seagate 120 gb hard drive. Your system is limited to up 128 gb, thus the recommendation.
You can follow the following guide to add your new hard drive:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/IDE/add2nddrive/
After you format the new drive, install your OS X Tiger on the new drive (I also recommend updating the OS X to 10.4.8)
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1048comboupdateppc.html
After you have finished installing the OS to the new hard drive, the OS should prompt you, asking if you would like to transfer files. Just follow the prompts, and you'll soon be done.
When the transfer is done, and you are satisfied that all is well, you may consider reformatting the old drive (losing all previous data) and using the newly formatted old drive for backup.

  • Will Logic Pro 9 run on a 2007 4GB ram, 320GB hard drive, Intel 2 duo 2ghz mac mini?

"Will Logic Pro 9 run on a 2007 4GB ram, 320GB hard drive, Intel 2 duo 2ghz mac mini?"
I am looking for the cheapest way possible to run Logic Pro 9 and will purchase a second hand mac mini if it will run the software.
    Thank you!

Yes it will.. I would recommend you use the combination of  Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and LPv9.1.5 (or 9.1.8 if you have to..) with that particular hardware to get the best performance out of it... I would not recommend running any OS X version higher than 10.6.8 as each new version of OS X from then onwards.. placed a bigger performance hit on the hardware... and frankly, less stability with LP9.
As to how well it will run on that hardware.. will more depend on the sort of loads you place on it.. depending on the type and content of the music you wish to compose... It will run and you should be able to create reasonable sized projects.. but again, it all depends on the plugins used.. the number of them... the number of tracks and so on... so to give a more precise answer is difficult.

  • 320GB Hard drive power supply died - where to find replacement?

    Hi,
The power supply for my external 320Gb hard drive (PX1223E-1G32) which I bought about a year ago has died. I am a bit annoyed as the drive has hardly been used and only just come out of storage after a house move!
Can anyone help track down a replacement in the UK? It is branded Dura Micro Inc AC Adapter 100-240V 1.2A +12V 1.2A +5V 2A and the DC power lead looks like a 4 pin 'DIN' type connector.
Does anyone have a contact email address for Customer service/retruns UK as it may be possible to replace it under warranty.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mark

    Hi,
Thnaks for the reply. Yes - the dealer is the obvious first stop but I am not sure if the warranty is still valid or not as I am yet to find the invoice! I was just wondering if there was a cheap source of power supplies if needed as so far I have only be able to find very expensive suppliers. In fact it may well be cheaper for me to buy a new drive enclosure and to transfer the drive over than to buy an actual new power supply.
    Thanks,
    mark

  • Bought retina Mbp yesterday couldn't afford biggest hard drive, recommendations for future external drive?

I bought a retina Mbp yesterday. I bought the 8 RAM. It is the middle model. I couldn't afford the top model with more RAM and bigger hard drive. I have been told that in the future, I will probably need an external hard drive. Any recommendations on external hard drives?

If you wanna save some money, go to an internet retailer/local computer store and buy an external enclosure. Then after that, buy a notebook/desktop hard drive (whatever fits, 3.5in = desktop, 2.5in= notebook). I reccomend getting a hard drive over 500gb, with 7200rpm, sata 6gbs (if desktop HDD) and at least 8mb cache. If your Mac supports it, do RAID 1, which basically sets the opposite disk as a backup. You can also buy an SSD, which is much more expensive, but up to 3x faster than a HDD. You can buy them at the same store and can format the drive to your liking. They usually come in 2.5 inch, are extremely light, have a large data cache, and are the future of memory storage.
Also, while you are over there buy 1600mhz 8gb memory. Get the single stick and replace only 1 of the already installed sticks. I personally think 12gb is enough, but if you want more, buy another stick of the same RAM.
    I hope this helped!

  • Do I need a separate hard drive to run FCP7 with a new Imac?

Do I need an external hard drive as a scratch disc to run FCP7 on a Mountain Lion new Imac?

Editing and finishing on USB 3 works great.  Just wrapped up a Smithsonian Channel show where the editor edited on a 2012 Macbook Pro using a USB3 drive, and I onlined with my 2012 Macbook Pro.  First show we did that was done solely on laptops. USB 3 drive worked great.
I started to online on my tower, but the connection was USB2, so playback was sporatic.  Switched to laptop.

This is a Mac question not a Photoshop question, and I am a Windows users, but I can Google and this might be what you need to do:

  • Will a new 320gb hard drive work on a mac book pro 3,1

purchased new 320GB hard drive for a mac book pro 3,1.  Old HD has link speed of 1.5GB, new HD transfers at 3GB.  New HD will not boot up.  Can link speed be changed on mac book pro 3,1.

Have you already initialized/partitioned the new drive? If yes, you've installed the operating system on it, and it doesn't boot? You've tried a safe-mode boot (hold the shift key when booting)?

  • Disk Utility and 320GB hard drive

I just installed a WD Scorpio 320GB hard drive in my first-generation MacBook. Everything works fine in normal use.
When I go to Disk Utility, however -- using the new internal HD as my startup disk -- the "Repair Disk" button is grayed out. The other three buttons are ok. "Verify Disk" shows no errors, and I can successfully run "Repair Disk" when I start up from a Leopard DVD. The "S.M.A.R.T." status check for the disk is OK.
My question: Is the grayed out button a matter of Disk Utility not being designed (yet) for 320GB disks on a MacBook? -- and I shouldn't worry? Or is the grayed out button a sign that something is wrong that I should be alert to?

You cannot repair the drive that booted the computer so assuming you didn't boot your computer with the installation DVD, this is normal.

  • I'm being told my start up disc is full on my 2010 macbook. Memory is 2GB 1067 MHz; and Finder tells me I have 1.05 GB still available.  Do I need a bigger hard drive?

I'm getting error message that my start up disc is full on my 2010 macbook.  Started with 2GB 1067 MHz; and, according to Finder, still have 1.05 GB available.  Any idea what's up?  I had MacKeeper dump all junk files.  Do I need a new hard drive?

First of all I would suggest you get rid of MacKeeper, which is well known in the Mac community to be useless or in some cases to be as bad as malware. Read this user tip by Klaus1.
The startup disk (your hard drive) is not the same as the system memory (the 2GB of RAM you describe.) You may very well need a larger hard drive, but the first thing I would try would be looking through your downloads folder for old installer disk images, deleting any that you do not need any more (usually all of them) and emptying your trash. Many users put files in their trash and forget to empty it.
If that doesn't gain you sufficient space, you may want to replace your hard drive with a larger model. You don't mention what size drive you have, but it is possible to do it yourself. See page 37 of this user manual.
Another option would be to put files that are taking up a large amount of space (often iTunes and iPhoto Libraries fall into this category) on an external hard drive. This works best if you do not need portability.
    Best of luck.

  • Do i need a external hard drive for my pictures

Do I need an external hard drive for my pictures?

Generally, you should have an external hard drive to backup your system. If your internal hard drive is filling up, you certainly can move pictures to an external hard drive.

  • I have a macbook pro, a little over 2 years old, have been advised I need a new hard drive....after 2 years!!!!

My macbook pro is just over 2 years old....for the last couple of months it has been running very slowly, the beachball is in permanent residence!
I have been advised I need a new hard drive....after only 2 years I'm not at all impressed. Is this normal?

Over a very large sample of drives, these drives are very reliable, despite being moved around inside laptops.
You do not have a very large sample, you have ONE drive. Anything that happens, from having it run for twenty years to having it die on the first day, is within the normal range.
The rapid resolution to your problem IS to replace the drive. At your leisure, you may find that after re-writing every block with Zeroes (a process that can take half a day and has no guarantee of success) enough spare blocks can be found to return the drive to service. Or maybe not. If you are willing to invest the time and energy to do this, you may get a nice backup drive, or you may get a doorstop. No one can predict ahead of time.

  • I need a new hard drive

Hi everyone, my son has a Touchsmart 310-1126.  We need a new hard drive.  Any idea where to find one or a compatible one?  I don't want to spend huge money, maybe $50 or $60.  I've found them for about $80.  Thanks for your help.

    Hi:
This is the best price I could find for a 1TB replacement.
