Can you please tell me where I can download a Windows 8.1 driver for SM Bus Controller on a HP Pavilion 17-f208ng
It's the only device that Windows 8.1 can't find a driver for - I've tried to update the driver software in Device manager for it and it doesn't find anything.

If the auto install file doesn't work, download and unzip the second file listed (zip file).
Go to the device manager and click on the smbus controller needing drivers, click on the driver tab. Click on Update Driver.
Select the Browse my computer for driver software option and browse to the driver folder that was created when you unzipped the file.
Make sure the Include Subfolders box is checked and see if the driver installs that way.
For the mouse pointer problem try reinstalling the touchpad drivers.

Hi: Please click on the device in the device manager. Then click on the details tab. Post the top string of characters you see. Those will identify the type and model of the missing device and I can send you the link to the drivers. It is either your AMT driver, TPM driver or IMEI driver. I need help with a RSR232 driver for an embedded controller

Hi-
My controller currently communicates to a LCD screen via keywords and an RS232 connection to a PC (Hyperterminal). It recognizes certain words and will "reply". For example you can ask what temperature does the sensor read and it will print a number to the LCD.
I would like to do the same using Labview V7.1.
1. Do I need a specific driver or are generic RS232 drivers available?
2. Can I write my own driver and if so, how do I get started? Are there tutorials online somewhere?

LabVIEW uses a driver called VISA for serial communication. Open Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX) and look at the software installed on your system. If NI-VISA is not listed, you need to install it from the drivers CD or you can download it. Click on the Support link a the top of the page.
There are shipping examples for serial communication. You can also use the Instrument I/O Assistant.

In need of a new hard drive for my old G5 computer

Hello there, I'm not as savvy as you are with computers but I am in need of a new hard drive for my old G5 computer that my husband uses. His crashed. If you did it all over again would you buy the same new hard drive? If so, where did you buy it? I don't even know where to start and was SO happy to find this recent post on installing new drives into the G5. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you!

I actually just ran across this hard drive oddity for the first time myself just yesterday. It seems that some older Macs may not be able to use the newest SATA interfaces on some hard drives.
I an attempt to not get overly technical, SATA is the current interface type on computer hard drives. You can get some additional information from Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA. There are currently three revisions, SATA-1 (the oldest), SATA-2 (the current version), & SATA-3 (the latest and greatest).
So what happened was that my G5 could not use the SATA-3 drive I purchased because the computer could not support the SATA-3 standard. It was possible to "slow down" one of the other test SATA-3 drives to make it work like a SATA-2 and so it may be possible to do the same to other hard drives.
To answer your question, I would NOT purchase the saem hard drive for my Mac as it does not work for this older Mac.
My suggestion, if you can find one purchase the same hard drive that was in the computer. That way you know it is compatible. If you would like to upgrade, you will have to do some looking. Although I cannot recommend a specific drive, my two favorite companies are Seagate, www.seagate.com and Western Digitial, www.wdc.com. You most likely have a 3.5" drive, if you have a desktop, 2.5" for a laptop. WD has the Cavier line and Seagate has either Barrcuda or Momentus. What you are looking for is capacity.
So, both Seagate and Western Digital are good. You need a 3.5" drive for a desktop or 2.5" drive for a laptop. Stick with a SATA-2 drive also known as a SATA 3Gb/s drive for compatibility. Get a drive that is 7200 RPM or higher. Finally purchase the largest capacity at you can afford. Amazon is a good general place to been looking.

I have a Western Digital 2 Terabyte USB External Hard Drive and it works like a charm and it costed me $129.00. My opinion is you can't go wrong with this brand and size for home use.

Any external hard drive that will connect via Firewire 800, USB, or Thunderbolt will work.
I have a 750GB Western Digital Scorpio drive in an OWC case, sitting on a Backpack, which connects via Firewire. Western Digital Scorpio drives have 5 year warranties, the OWC (macsales.com) cases usually use the Oxford chipset which works well with macs, and the Backpack is a slick way to mount a backup drive without taking up desk space.
After you hook up whatever external drive you end up with, you'll partition and initialize it for OS X, then begin using it.
My opinion, I would not get a Western Digital pre-packaged external drive/case. While the hard drives are OK, there have been a number of people that have had issues with the electronics.

I wonder why the unknown device appears in device manager if the recovery disk has been used. ?:|
Recovery disk installs all drivers and usually no unknown devices should be visible in device manager
