Thanks again for the reply (from some time ago!). I hope to get a reply from you based on my following simplification of how I intend to use my backup. No...I haven't moved forward on my decision of what/how to conduct my backups!
1) I prefer to use a single backup device for each computer
2) I would like to be able to create DVDs of movies, and (if time becomes an issue) do a backup of the DVD
How would you modify your suggestion(s) to me based on these changes?
Thanks!
OK, were I starting from scratch, I would go with the docking station from the OWC link.  (I think the price has actually come down $20 since my original post!  Man, I love pricing on electronics stuff!)  You can easily move it from one computer to another and bare drives are cheaper to purchase and easier to store.   If you want a full-time device for each computer, I would probably still recommend the docking station, especially with the price falling like it is.
IMHO, the best storage solution for bare drives is this box from Wiebe Tech, which is sturdy ESD plastic and nearly as compact as the 3.5 inch drive.  My backups rotate through a safe deposit box that can hold a bunch of them, though I usually have only two offsite at any one time.
For DVD backups, I have in the past imaged DVDs using Disk Utility, which works out nicely, especially when I need to burn more copies.  And you can just mount the image of a video DVD and DVD player comes up and you can watch from the hard drive.

  • I need help choosing the 'right' backup drive(s)

I have a MacBook Pro on which I do mainly video editing. I make DVDs of my family and real estate stuff which I then want to offload from the laptop to my external hard drive. For the purpose of backing up this laptop, I will probably run the backup on an adhoc basis (after I complete a video editing process). By the way I use iMovie 09.
Now, I also have a MacG5 which contains work data (mainly pdfs of contracts for real estate, etc). On this machine, I wish to do a somewhat regular backup. Please excuse information I am leaving out - - this is where you folks can help me.
    My question(s) are:
    - Should I buy two separate backup devices to be more efficient?
    - Are there any brands or specifications I should consider over others (Firewire vs USB)?
I am a novice in this domain and any suggestions or clarification are greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

Just get a new motherboard. You can get a cheap one that supports all the hardcore nvidia/ ati models for less that $100.

  • Need help finding the right codec to play QT files

Like many others who have posted, all the quicktime files on my drive have turned to black. Previously when I opened the file, I saw picture and sound. Now every single file has only audio, but the picture is black.
I am operation on Mac O.S. 10.4.11. I am using Quicktime Pro 7.5. I have been trying to fix this problem for a month now. Many people have suggested I need to find the right codec, but so far I have not found it. I have tried: A52codec.component, AC3codec, MacOS 8.x, 9.1.x, Apple Intermediate Codec.com, Apple MPEG2.codec.component, Avilmporter-r7.component, DivX Decoder.component, DivX Encoder.component, DivX Pro 6.8.0.19 + keymaker, EnsharpEncoderMacOsX.cmg, Fbx 20091quicktime_macemu.pkg.tar, Fbx QT.pkg, Flipsformac, WMV Advanced.component, Flipsformac WMV Advanced Exports.component, Flipsformac WMV Import.component, IMXCodec.component, LAAME Universal Installer.mpkg, LAAMEncoder.component, QSSP_2.1.dmg, QSXEssentials.component, QSXEssentials.dmg, QTFvx.component, Red Quicktime Codec v3.1.pkg, Red Code iedcod.qt.component, Spectrograph.component, TSCC.component xiphqt.component, XviD_codec-r58.component, XviDELEGATE.component
    Nothing worked!
I also tried to install Perian. This did not work.
What should I do? Should I re-install my operating system and start over? About a month ago, all the video clips played just fine. Is there any solution?
    Thanks

    Hi Wangerer!
I haven't even heard of half of those! You may have reached overkill on codecs!
Get rid of some of them and read this:
These are the downloads and the settings you need in order to view/hear pretty much everything that the net can throw at you: The setup described below has proved repeatedly successful on both PPC and Intel macs, but nothing in life carries a guarantee!
It is known to work in the great majority of cases with Safari 3.0.4, 3.1, 3.1.1, QT 7.3, 7.4.x and 7.5 and OS 10.4.11.
Assuming you already run Tiger versions OS 10.4.11 and have Quicktime 7.4 or above, and are using Safari 2 or 3, download and install (or re-install even if you already had them) the latest versions, suitable for your flavor of Mac, of:
RealPlayer 11 (which is no longer in beta) for Mac from:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/15540
Flip4Mac WMV Player from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx (Windows Media Player for the Mac is no longer supported, even by Microsoft)
    Perian from http://perian.org/
You should read this support page http://perian.org/#support in case you need to delete older codecs.
Adobe FlashPlayer should first be uninstalled using the appropriate uninstaller available here:
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157&sliceId=2
and then the latest version obtained from here:
    http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash
    and installed.
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS, but please see my footnote if you are running Leopard.)
In earlier versions than QT 7.1.3 in Quicktime Preferences, under advanced, UNcheck Enable Flash, and under Mime settings/Miscellananeous only check Quicktime HTML (QHTM).
You should also ensure, if you are running Tiger 10.4.11, that you have downloaded and installed all the correct version for your Mac of Security Updates up to and including 2008-004. (N.B. Security Updates require both a restart and a permission repair.)
In Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime/ delete any files relating to DivX (Perian already has them). However it should be noted that Perian is not an internet plugin and will not play DivX files imbedded on a website. For that you will need the DivX Player browser plugin available from http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/
Now go to Safari Preferences/Security, and tick the boxes under Web Content (all 4 of them) to enable Java.
Lastly open Audio Midi Setup (which you will find in the Utilities Folder of your Applications Folder) and click on Audio Devices. Make sure that both Audio Input and Audio Output, under Format, are set to 44100 Hz, and that you have selected 'Built in Audio'.
Important: Now repair permissions and restart.
You should also consider having the free VLC Player from http://www.videolan.org/ in your armory, as this plays almost anything that DVD Player might not.
There is an additional 'fix' you could try if you are having problems with Flash and Quicktime, depending on which type of Mac you have:
On Intel Macs, make sure that you are not running Safari in Rosetta. You can check this, and change it, in the Get Info window.
On PPC Macs, go to the Hard Disk/Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder, and drag the file 'QuickTime Plugin.webplugin' to the desktop. Quit and restart Safari. If things have improved you can trash that file. If they haven't put it back, as the lack of this plug-in can cause QT content in some widgets to cease functioning.
And now there is an additional kid on the block: SilverLight. Microsoft has created their own version of what a replacement for Flash should be. You can read more about it here:
    http://silverlight.net/
So, if you go to any sites that have been designed for this new Silverlight stuff, you can download the plug-in from here (but make certain that you are downloading SilverLight v.1.0 for OS X (10.4.8 upwards):
    http://silverlight.net/GetStarted/
    FOOTNOTE
    If you are running Leopard:
Some users have mentioned that the latest Flash Player (v.9.0.115.0) conflicts with Leopard, and that they have needed to revert to v. 9.0.47. This can be downloaded from here:

  • HELP I need some help choosing the right laptop

Hello there. I am a student and I am looking to buy a Apple laptop. I have around 700GBP to spend, but I do not wish to spend all of that. As I do not use Macs that often I dont think I need the newer Macbooks or the Macbook Pros as I feel that it is a waste of power. My friend said the 12" Powerbook was the way to go. There are several different models out there and I was wondering if anyone could help me choose one. It will be used mostly for word processing and admin based work, but I would like to have enough power to be able to run some graphic based activities. I wont be using high level apps that much but it would be nice to know if the opportunity was there, then i I have sufficient power to be able to run them. My friend said an 867mhz G4 with upgraded hdd and ram would do the trick, but I have found out that the specs range all the way up to 1.5ghz. I like the look of the powerbook and I have heard they are more reliable than an ibook which is why I dont really want to choose one of those. Thanks for any help!

The biggest advantage of the 12PB is its portability, but you didn't include that in your specs.
The graphics are very good for the small screen. If you need more intense graphics you should consider a larger screen.
I use mine for mostly word processing and e-mail. I am also the IT guy in my small office and I manage networked PCs from my PB. I use an external monitor and screen spanning for extra work area. I thought long and hard before I bought my PB, as I had used PCs extensively all my life. The configuration that was recommended to you will work fine.

  • Need counsel choosing the right GE model

    Dear friends!
I'm planning to buy a G-series notebook, but model range is so vast that even retailers struggle to help me pick the right product! So far I narrowed my search to GE70 20E line of notebooks. As far as I reckon all of these laptops should come with
    a) 17" display (GE70 20E),
    b) Intel Core-i7 4700MQ CPU,
    c) Nvidia GeForce GTX 765M GPU (GE70 20E).
From this point the 20E family further divides into a subrange. That's where I'm getting lost due to lack of detail on official site and contradicting data in online shops. I figured that GE70 20E notebooks differ in the following categories:
    a) RAM - 8GB / 12GB / 16GB,
    b) HDD - 750GB / 1TB at 5400 rpm / 7200 rpm
    c) SSD - none / 128GB / 256GB.
My preferences are 8GB RAM, 1TB HDD (@7200 rpm) and either 128GB or 256GB SSD. So far I have identified only one model which seems to match these criteria – GE70 2OE-268.
Can you kindly tell me if it indeed meets the hardware specs I mentioned? If it doesn't, I would be very grateful if anyone could clarify this issue and direct me to exact model numbers which suit my selection.
P.S. Note to MSI employees: Please, update your online catalogs!
    Thanks in advance,
    Denis

Thank you for the feedback, Nichrome!
To your first point: That is perfectly clear. I wouldn't be wasting your time (and mine to register and post in the forum) if I'd found solution elsewhere.
Quote from: Nichrome on 28-January-14, 22:20:19
depends where you want to buy the notebook from. I'd rather send a message to the retail seller than ask here. 8gb of RAM is enough, unless you're going to use software that is heavy on ram (video editing etc). It would be better to go for HDD @7.2k rpm (bit faster) whatever the size would be. And in case of SSD, it's up to you. Think about that Windows (90% you're likely to use it) will need at least 40gb for it and its drivers, so 128 will be enough (I have 120gb on my PC and I've halfed it so 60gb ish.. for WIndows/Drivers and around 60gb for games). HDD would be for storage I believe.
To the second: The problem is, as stated before, that retailers struggle as much as I do. I contacted like half a dozen different distributors along with MSI support to no avail (yet). So I had to address the community since sales personnel were incompetent and MSI -- plain unresponsive.
Other than that I totally agree with your opinion on hardware in question. I'm not hesitating which one to pick. I just need a precise pointer to an MSI product containing those components, among like a hundred models within GE70 20E range of laptops. You see, wasting an upward of $1,6k on a product without being certain it's the one you need feels like a fail.

  • I need to play a DVD that was created on a microsoft machine on my Mac and need help finding the right converter software.

I have received a "Data DVD" that was made on a windows machine and need to play it on my mac but am having trouble finding the right player or converter.I would like a free application if possible. Thank You,JerryStephen:-)

I think I understand now.  The DVD has an auto start player (exe) that steps through the video's, html, whatever. Your gonna need windows or you'll be forced to look at the individual pieces seperately.  Html's you can open, idx files are subtitles, the video format is avi I'm guessing or maybe wma.
Try this first, get the VLC player from video_lan.  It's a great tool to have in your toolbox.  It should play the video files at least (including subtitles).  VLC can play almost any format.

  • How to choose the right processor speed for application

    Hi,
Can any one help me to identify the right cRIO model.
I want to choose the cRIO processor for an application. The cRIO- 9025, has processor of 800 MHz speed. Where as there is another cRIO model which comes with 400 MHz of the processor.
How do I decide which model to choose?
The mathematical calculations will help me to reach at a conclusion. I am not sure how to go ahead with the mathematical calculations.
Can any one advise me on this.
    ThanX

I don't think you will get any mathematical calculations telling you witch cRIO you have to use based on the level of information you have given.
I don't think there are any mathematical calculations to decide witch cRIO a user can use.
You need to give a lot more information about what you are going to use cRIO for, before anyone can give you an advice.
What does you setup look like ?
Wwitch modules are going in the cRIO ?
    What are they doing ( input/output )?
Are the cRIO interacting witch external systems?
Are the cRIO only collecting data ? How fast ?
What operation are the cRIO going to do ?
Just a fewe of the questions you need to ask yourself.

  • I need help with finding right stylus pen for lenovo yoga 2 pro!

I did read other person's post, but I did not find my answer. I am currently using my fingers to write my notes and it drives me nuts! I do have a stylus pen that have huge round fabric tip. It does not write well. I want a stylus pen with pointy end so I can acturally take my notes on OneNote. I writes equations down so it is very hard to write small and neat with my hand. I do know that my laptop is touch sensitive so it only works with rubber or fabric tips! I could not find any stylus pen with those tip that are pointy.... I need help on finding pointy tipped stylus pen that will let me write well. I am ordering ati-glare screen protector because I can see myself on the screen like a mirror... lol Hopefully this will not keep me from finding a pen that works well! Please give me link to the pen, if you can! Thank you for reading!

    ColonelONeill is correct.
The Yoga 2 Pro does not have a digitizer, so a capacitative stylus, which mimics a fingertip, is what you'd need.

  • Need help selecting the right MBP for me, just bought a pc with Windows 8 and I already regret it..

Ok, so I'm an engineering student and I am in need of a good laptop to run programming and design type software. I have an older iMac which I love but I need the portability of a laptop for school. I was thinking I would be fine with a pc since most of the software I would be using for school is windows based. So last night, after shopping around for quite a bit, I decided to go with a Sony Vaio E series laptop with Windows 8, 8gb ram, i7 processor, dedicated graphics card, 1tb hard drive, and touch screen. It was the best performance laptop (on paper) Best Buy had in the store for just under $1000. I would have loved to get an upper end MBP but they are over twice the price as the Sony.. So I get it home with the Vaio and it feels laggy and glitchy, it takes 2 seconds for the window to pop up after 'right clicking', I can see lines in the screen, the resolution seems far from HD when on the normal looking windows side (as opposed to the tablet look, forgive my poor terminology) and the web browser, and the touch pad seems to be hit or miss in that it doesn't always register the touch pad commands. I checked all of the visual and performance settings, made the resolution as high as possible, changed some of the settings to the high performance settings, made sure all of my drivers were updated, and the only effect was a very loud fan that runs constantly.
So in short, I am going to take this back and start looking at the macbook pros. Here's my dilemna, I don't know which specs I will definitely need in a Macbook Pro. I need to be able to run windows on it either in parallel or as a partition for my programs necessary for school. Can the MBP run windows smoothly enough to run 3D design types of programs? If so, which one should I get? I love the size of the 13" MBP but it only has a dual core processor, instead of the quad core like the 15" MBP, I'm not sure if I definitely need the quad over the dual core. I would love a solid state MBP but they are out of my price range and not enough space if I end up partitioning it.
Sorry for the book, but school starts Monday and I need some direction to find out which one I need to get fairly quickly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Take a look at this MBP, a refurbished unit.  Don't let the late 2011 release date put you off.  For about  $500 less than an equivalent 'new' one with similar specifications you get a quad core CPU and excellent graphics.  As Steve359 mentioned, this can be upgraded if the need arises and has the same warranty as a 'new' one
I would not be surprised that these may actually be 'new' MBPs due to the length of time that they have been replaced by the current generation.  I purchased a 17" model about 5 weeks ago, and a serial number check suggests that it is 9 weeks old.

  • I need help finding the right CS version, please

Hi there! I've been on the phone on and off all day with adobe and apple support trying to figure out what to do...
Hours later, still no concrete answer. I'm hoping someone out there can help me! Here's the situation:
My laptop crashed; I bought a new iMac today; I tried to install CS2 into it, but to no avail. I was told by support that the new Snow Leopard (10.6.3) does not support CS2. I then thought I would purchase CS5. However, I need my version to be compatible with those who I work with, all of which are in CS2 still. It seems SOME programs in CS5 will not be able to save down to CS2 for my coworkers.
Can someone please point me to a Suite that will work in my operating system and also be 100% compatible with CS2?
The adobe support woman could only tell me "your moving from one mac to another, so it should work. I don't understand why it wouldn't work... Thank you for contacting Adobe. Is there anything else I can help you with today?"  **bamboozled**

I answered you in the InDesign forum.

  • Help Choosing the right product

I looking for help with knowing which version to purchase. The only tool I use is the extraction tool. I am using that on the the XI trial. What product would I need to to purchase to have that option available?

    Hi macdadii,
Both Acrobat Pro and Standard allow you to extract pages from a PDF. That's not a feature that Adobe Reader or any of the Acrobat.com online services offer. If the extract tool is the only thing that you need, then I would recommend Acrobat Standard, so that you're not paying for features that you don't need/won't use.
    Best,
