I need help getting my Airport Extreme to connect to the internet

Hello everyone,
I need some help setting up my AirPort Extreme. I'm trying to reestablish the express after a couple years of not using it. When I've set it up in the past, I've always had a hard time, and by accident it seems, I click something or turn something on and off, and I get it to work.
I have  a 802.11g second generation airport extreme. I'm able to connect to my network and I can move files back and forth from the laptop to the desktop, and vise versa.
I have a MacPro 2007, ethernet cable connected to my Linksys router, with two internal hard drives. One has OSX 10.5.8, AirPort Utility 5.6.1, and everything is up to date. The other has OSX 10.6.8, AirPort Utility 5.6.1. I also have a MacBookPro 2011, It came with Snow Leopard installed and I upgraded  it to OSX 10.7.4. I installed AirPort Utility 5.6.1.
All three systems can see and connect to my network, but will not connect to the internet.  The extreme's IP starts with 169.254.xxx.xxx, and there's an exclamation point on the wi-fi icon.
The set up I have now is a Westell DSL modem from Verizon. I have the ethernet cable from the DSL modem connected to the WAN port of the express and the other cable going from the ethernet port from the extreme to the ethernet port of my Linksys router 4 port switch, model #BEFSR41 V.3. I have reversed the connection to and from the extreme with the same result.
This is what I've done so far with no luck:
• Unplugged the DSL modem, Linksys router, and the extreme for about twenty minutes.
• Updated the Linksys firmware.
• I have reset the extreme from the back and thru the AirPort Utility many, many times.
• I've done a hard reset. I don't know if it worked. After the extreme powered back up, my network's name and settings were still the same. On a positive note, I'm now able to get on the web when I set the connection sharing to "Distribute a range of IP addresses" using the ethernet on my desktop. Before, I was only able to do so when the connection sharing in AirPort Utility  was set to "Off (Bridge Mode)".
Any other Ideas?
As always, your help is always appreciated,
Rick

Hi Tesserax,
Thanks for getting back to me.
Sorry about the confusion. My goal is to get online wirelessly with my MacBook Pro and be able to use the ethernet connection for my MacPro.
My DSL modem is a Westell WireSpeed model A90-210015-04, the Linksys router, and the AirPort Extreme.

    Yes, you can.

  • Need help getting my G-4 to connect to cable internet

I inherited a G-4 Power PC from my son about a year ago. At that time it would automatically connect via built in ethernet and cable to my cable modem, although I would have to re-boot the modem and restart the computer 2 or 3 times. Now that I need to start using it since my G-3 running OS 10.3.9 won't download Flash 10, the G-4 refuses to connect to the internet automatically or manually.
Do I need a different IP address for each computer?(I use suddenlink cable internet) I plugged in the numbers from my G-3 and get the message that I'm connected to the internet but when I open a browser I get the message that I'm not connected. Can I re-boot to an earlier time when the connection worked?
Only occasionally do I get the message that another application has changed my settings.
Sorry to run on, any help appreciated.

Your isp was remembering the prior ip address. The reboot of the modem forgot the ip address.

I think you have run into the security update problem.
"Your network settings have been changed by another application"
Here is the fix for this problem:

Did you try defining a new location. I suggest this.
I think if you delete the file suggest in the link will go a long way to solve the problem.

  • Can't get airport extreme to connect to the internet?

My sister in law just purchased an airport extreme for her windows pc and when we connect the ethernet from the modem to the airport, the amber light flashes, indicating that it has no connection to the internet. We have rebooted both the airport and the modem, what do we do now?

Download the setup manual for your AEB here:
    http://support.apple.com/manuals/#airport
    Follow the setup instructions.
Flashing light could also mean that a firmware upgrade is available for your AEB.

  • My airport extreme cannot connect to the internet because it says it has no DNS servers. How can I fix this?

I just moved and am setting up a new apartment. Verizon put in internet service yesterday. I got a network going on my airport extreme but it could not connect to the internet because it says it has no DNS servers. help! What do I do now?

Ensure that the ethernet is connected to the WAN port (with the dotted circle).
You may have to reset and reconfigure your Airport Extreme.

  • Airport Extreme wont connect to the internet

I recently had to shut down my AE Base station. When I went to reconnect, I was no longer connected to the internet. I have tried everything I can think of from shutting the whole thing down, to full factory reset, but for some reason it will not work. I can see and connect to the airport itself, the Cable internet works (I am connected by the ethernet cable to write this), but I cannot connect through the AE. Also, I can connect to the airport through the Airport Utility, but the Airport Setup Assistant tells me I do not have the correct hardware installed??? Can anyone give me some steps to follow that might help me to work through the problem?
I have a cable modem connected to Virgin Media (which is definitely working)
The Cable modem is connected via cable to the WAN port as it has always been.
nothing else is connected to the set up, although before reset I also had an Airport express connected as a slave, elsewhere in the house. I have tried to use this directly instead of the Airport Extreme but with no luck.....
    Finally, I have no firewalls
    Many thanks for any help

    Welcome to the discussions!
If you haven't already done so, try a full modem reset as follows:
Push the reset button on the modem and then power the modem down
Pull the battery from the modem if it is easily accessible
Power down the rest of your network....all devices
    Wait 30 minutes
Make sure that the modem is connected to the WAN (circle of dots) port on the AirPort Extreme
Power up the modem first and let it run 4-5 minutes by itself
Then power up the AirPort Extreme the same way
Power up each of your other devices one at a time, waiting a few minutes before you start the next device.
    Please post on your results.

  • Airport Extreme is connecting to the internet, but still flashes orange.

I've set up an Airport Extreme and it is connecting to the internet, however its light still flashes orange on the unit and in Airport Utility ver. 6.2 and it has a red circle with a "1" in it similar to the alert notification on an iPhone for messages and email. What does this mean? As I said, I can connect devices to it and connect to the internet, so it seems to be functioninbg fine. So why isn't the status light green?

If the problem does not resolve itself by powering down your network equipment, a complete reset of all your equipment is justified. Power down the modem and "hard reset" the Extreme, followed by reconfiguring it using AirPort Utility.
Power down your modem whenever you change what is physically connected to it. Make it a habit.

Originally it had the "double nat" issue but when I went to bridge mode my whole set-up failed.
That should probably be resolved as well. More information is required regarding this failure.
Sometimes, an attempt to reconfigure a minor setting will result in what appears to be a total meltdown followed by extreme user frustration. In that event, starting over with a "hard reset" and subsequent reconfiguration is generally the best way to proceed.

  • I can use the ethernet connection but not the wireless on my Airport Extreme to connect to the internet.

How do I get the wireless to work again? I've turned both the modem and Airport Extreme off and on again. Do I need to do a hard reset on the Extreme?

Thanks for the reply.  I've only powered down all my devices and repowered them.  When I made the switch from cable to Uverse, at some point my old USB printer connected to the Extreme spit out about 8 documents that were in its queue, and nothing since.  I can see it on the network from my Mac, but my wife's PC can't find it (and that's the real problem, if you know what I mean).  I have a new MacBook Pro, and she's running XP SP2 on her PC.  Everything worked fine when I was on cable modem service, but since I've changed to ATT Uverse, I'v had this little issue.  As you can tell, I'm a novice when it comes to networking.
    Thanks again,
    Bill J.

  • RTP300 _ old I know, but I need help... I cannot connect to the internet?

Okay, so up until last night everything was great with using the network ports on the router. Then stuff hit the fan, so they say. After 5 months a hiccup, and I don't know how to fix it. The issue was with my cable modem resetting, so my ISP (COMCAST) had to reset the modem. Done. But now I cannot log on to the internet through the RTP300 on even the main comp. (port 1) I am unsure of what settings to check or really what to even do. We had a tech come out and set the network up for us, since I am clueless, but cannot afford one to come back out. My dh was laid off from work, so I have to figure this out. ANy help would be greatly appreciated!

    Configuration for cable connection:-
Connect your modem to the Router's Internet Port...Connect a desktop computer to port1 on the router...
Open the set up page of the router by launching an Internet Explorer Browser and type the address bar, 192.168.15.1 and press enter. When it prompts for the Username and Password, use admin for Username and Password both...
On the main setup page the ""Internet Connection Type"" should be on ""Obtain IP Automatically - DHCP “. Click on the Save Settings button.
Now click on the sub tab ""MAC address clone"".
    - Select enable
Click Clone & click save settings
Check WAN/Internet IP Address on Status page of router ....
If getting Valid Ip .... try going online
If not ... power cycle your modem and the router for 1 minutes and check for the Internet Connection...

  • Airport Extreme - no connection to the internet

My problem is several-fold, but maybe can be solved with one solution. I don't know.
I just bought an AEBS and tried setting it up to use with my desktop G4 and my roommates Dell laptop. I seemed to set my mac up with no problem, but my roommate's Dell can't access the internet, yet it can 'see' and connect to the AEBS.
But here's the kicker. The AEBS is blinking amber, which would tell me that I shouldn't be able to access the internet with my mac. I checked and, yes, I'm definitely connected to my AEBS and not to some nearby wireless router.
What the heck is going on?

It is likely that the AEBS(n) is blinking Amber because you have NOT implemented any form of Wireless Security and the AEBS(n) is annoyed at your laissez-faire security policy.
You really should implement either WEP (TSN) or WPA/WPA2. Use WPA/WPA2 unless the least robust security method available to you is WEP on your roommate's Dell laptop. If WEP, use WEP (TSN) and specify a 13 ASCII character (exactly 13) password.

  • My airport is not connecting to the internet. I have a cable modem. and i'm on the internet now connected directly to the modem. what can i do?

my airport is not connecting to the internet. I have a cable modem. and i'm on the internet now connected directly to the modem. what can i do?

I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
    Power-up your computer(s).
If the above steps do not solve the problem, start over with step 1 above, but then perform the next steps between steps 1 & 2. above.
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
While all of the devices are powered-down, perform a "factory default" reset on the base station. This will get it back to its "out-of-the-box" configuration and make setting it up much easier, especially if you use the "Assist me" process within the AirPort Utility. (ref: Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule)
After the base station resets, go ahead and power it back down.
Reconnect the AirPort base station to the Internet broadband modem. For the Extreme and Time Capsule, be sure to connect the cable to the base station's WAN (circle-of-dots) port.
Continue with step 2 in the first set of steps.
In this basic configuration, the AirPort base station will broadcast an unsecured wireless network with a Network Name (SSID) of Apple Network NNNNNN. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • HT4623 I keep getting an error message "cannot connect to the internet."  Is this a problem with my internet provider, or has anyone else had this problem.

I keep getting an error message "cannot connect to the internet."  Is this a problem with my internet provider, or has anyone else had this problem.

I get that problem once in a while and I will not be able to connect to the Internet with any of the 5 or 6 (or 7 or 8 ) web browsers that I use on my iPad. The one thing that I do that has never failed to work for me is to close all apps on my iPad and reset the device. I can't guarantee that it will work for you, but this works for me every time I get the server failed to load/can't connect to the Internet message.... Or whatever the exact message is.
If you have a ton of apps in the multitasking display, it can take a while to close them all, so you could just trey resetting the iPad first and that might be all that you need to do.
Closing apps in iOS 7 works like this. Drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Need Help with extending Airport Extreme w/802.11n

I would like to find a way, if there is one, to extend the coverage of my Airport Extreme w/802.11n. My object is to be able to share my home network with a 2nd house on my property which is approx. 90-100' away from main house and Airport Extreme w/802.11n base station. This home base station is connected to my iMac and I would like to extend it to allow my Dell PC w/ Win XP in 2nd house to connect to the internet/share files/share printer.
Is this possible and what would I need on the PC side to accomplish this wirelessly?
Thank You in advance for your help.
    Daniel

Is the 2nd house on a the same electrical box as the main house? If it's the same, then you can try the powerline ethernet solution.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833122168
You will find it cheaper than most outdoor point-to-point bridge solutions.
