I Need to Learn SQL Server Terminology

I downloaded SQL Server 2012 Express onto my Windows 7 machine, and need to know if an instance is the same as a file.  I have a MS Access database (many, actually) and am learning to convert/upgrade to a SQL Server 2012 database, but when I installed
the Express, it started at 4 GB before I even created or copied any tables from my Access file.
My goal is to upload the SQL Server databases to a hosting space (not my machine).  The transfer rate would take days to transfer this size.  Is the instance the only transferable object?

  • Need to connect SQL Server 2008 and CR 2008 via OLE DB SQL Server Provider

    I am relatively new to Crystal but have done some minor design/layout work in the past. I just purchased CR 2008 and dowloaded a Eval Copy of SQL Server 2008 to build test reports that will then be uploaded to a hosted web app we use for use with live data.
    I am having some trouble, however, getting SQL server and CR 08 to talk the way I need them to. We have to use the OLE DB for SQL Server Provider connection for the reports to work in our hosted live environment but I cannot get this to work on SQL 2008. The server never appears in the Server dropdown and if I manually type it get the following error:
    failed to open connection.
    Detail ADO Error Code: 0x80004005
    Source: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server
    Description: [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access is denied.
    SQL State: 08001
    Native Error: 17 [Database Vendor Code: 17 ]
    I am setting up the connection through the Database Expert choosing the OLE DB (ADO) folder and then selecting 'Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server' then entering my server name, user id, password, and Database name.
    I have uninstalled and reinstalled everything twice. I have installed the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Analysis Service 10.0 OLEDB Provider pack.
    My provider/host does use SQL Server 2005 but since I can't get a free Evaluation version of it I have to use 2008 for my local copy. I have searched the web over (including here) and cannot find an answer to my issue.
    I cannot use SQL Server Express version because our copy of the DB is too big. I cannot use the Native 10 provider as the reports will not work once I have uploaded them to the live data.
    any help anyone can provide for this would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank you and sorry if this is a dupe post. I have searched everywhere and cannot find the answer.

    Hello,
    Go to Microsoft's site and download their OLE DB test tool and test the connection. Did you install the MS client tools to test the connection also?
    As a test try creating an ODBC System DSN just to verify you can connect and create a report also.
    And don't use the SA account, MS 2008 disabled it, sort of, so you'll have to create a new account and grant permissions to any table you need to use.
    SQL 2008 changed security model big time so it's not the same as 2005 once was....
    Good luck

  • I need help installing SQL Server 2012 Express

    I am very much an amateur. I got a new machine. The old one had Server 2008 R2 but the recommendation was that I need to move to 2012 Express.
    When I moved to the new machine, the mover (LapLink) screwed up the version of 2008 R2. IOW, I now have to go forward and install 2012..
    I downloaded all the 64 bit files (5 of them). When I start SQLEXPR_x64_ENU.exe, the process starts and then I'm given the choice of a new install or upgrade. I chose the new install. The process started and I got the following message ...
    "Failed to retrieve data for this request.."
    There are no hints anyplace as to what this means.
    When I click "OK", a new status window pops up and proclaims that something is wrong. Then all activity stops.
    I don't know what to do. I can't use either version and I really can't tell you much more to help me.

  • Need help installing sql server 2012 on windows server 2012 core

    Hi Guys
    I am having trouble installing sql server 2012 on windows server 2012 core. I am doing this on VM and my VM is not connected to internet.
    This setup is part of preparing lab for sql serve exam 70-462. I would really appreciate your help.
    I am including the links to the log files that were generated after installation. There are following 2 files
    Component Update and
    Detail_Global_Rules
    Thanks

    Hi
    iworkonline,
    Regarding to your original question, you can work around it according to Prashanth’s post or unclick the “Include SQL Server Product Updates" checkbox when installing SQL Server on your VM.
    Regarding to your second question, I make a test using TechNet Virtual Lab and everything works as expected . Below are my steps.
    1. Choose Web client after laughing the Lab.
    2. Choose SQLONE machine and “OPEN CHARMS” as follows, then search SQL Server Management Studio, use it to connect to the default instance (which has been installed in the lab).
    From your description, you get error message “Device not ready”. Could you please post more details? Are you installing SQL Server 2012 on the TechNet Virtual Lab?
    Thanks,

  • Do I need to have SQL server and VSS writer installed on my Laptop?

    no, you don't need them unless you are developing database-driven websites.   each are services related to hosting databases locally.

  • I need help with SQL Server 2012

    Hi Everyone,
    I am using the query pane to create a database with the data  file and log file but keep getting this error message. I will be glad if someone can help.
    You can see below the syntax:
    Msg 5123, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
    CREATE FILE encountered operating system error 5(Access is denied.) while attempting to open or create the physical file 'C:\project.mdf'.
    Msg 1802, Level 16, State 4, Line 1
    CREATE DATABASE failed. Some file names listed could not be created. Check related errors..
    CREATE DATABASE project
    ON
    (Name= 'project_dat',
    FILENAME ='C:\project.mdf',
    SIZE = 10,
    MAXSIZE = 100,
    FILEGROWTH = 5)
    LOG ON
    (NAME = project_log,
    FILENAME = 'C:\project.ldf',
    SIZE =40,
    MAXSIZE = 100,
    FILEGROWTH = 10);

    Look at the second number in your constraints ValidBirthYear and ValidDeathYear. Do you mean to limit it to years between 1000-1199 and 2000-2199? Also, your ValidDeathYear constraint is using DateOfBirth.
    CONSTRAINT
      ValidBirthYear
    CHECK
    (DateOfBirth LIKE '[1-2]
    [0-1] [0-9] [0-9]'),
    CONSTRAINT
      ValidDeathYear
    CHECK
    (DateOfBirth LIKE '[1-2]
    [0-1] [0-9] [0-9]'));
    I'm very much a beginner so that may not fix your issue but it sure looks like the cause of the second message to me.

  • Need help on SQL server issues

    Hello,
    We have a table (example: tableA) with approximately 14 million records and many stored procedures uses this table for joins during retrieve on UI.
    The data in this table will be populated through an SSIS package, once in every day. Actually, the SSIS package will populate another table (example: tableA_ETL) and then renames the table to the original name (example: from tableA_ETL to tableA and tableA
    to tableA_ETL) so that it would not affect the end users during data populate.
    Now the issue is that we are getting 'Invalid object name dbo.tableA' error while user try to retrieve on UI. We observed that this is happening when user does a retrieve operation through UI during the table rename (example from tableA_ETL to tableA).
    Could anyone please suggest any solution for this?
    Thanks
    Rakesh

    Richard.
    What is use of FREEPROCCACHE ? is it really required. You should have also included in your answer the grave afteraffects of running this command. This would clear cache store for proc and proc might start taking longer time to execute.
    The issue is simple here IMO its just the object change is not happening correctly or users are trying to access when change is happening

  • Reporting Services Add-in for Sharepoint- does it need an SQL Server license?

    In a new project we will be creating an SSRS in Sharepoint integrated mode. For this we'll need SQL Server and Sharepoint on that box.
    We'll also have one or more SharePoint Web Front End (WFE) servers. To allow them to connect to the SSRS-in-sharepoint-mode box, and to present the user with the right user interface for doing so, I believe we can install the Reporting Services Add-In for
    Sharepoint on the WFE servers.
    The question is, do we need to have  SQL Server license for each WFE server where we use the Reporting Services Add-In, or is it free to use?
    We've had advice that we need to buy a SQL Server license everywhere we use the add-in, but I am not sure this is correct.
    Thanks in advance,
    Rich

    Hello there,
    The Reporting service Add-in for SharePoint can be downloaded free on Microsoft Download site. That means it does not need any license on the add-in.

  • I can't see sql server express 2012 from ssms 2008 R2 -- what do I need to download?

    I'm running sql server 2008 R2 Developer on a win7 (pro) workstation.   I would like to keep this installation because it has SSRS and Analysis Server. But I was not able to attach a sql 2012 DB so I downloaded Sql Server Express 2012 (per the
    picture below - 1st option selected) and installed it.   Sql Server Express 2012 appears to be running -- per my services list, but I cannot see the instance in ssms 2008 R2. Do I need to uninstall Sql Server Express 2012 and then download another
    option (from the picture below)? How should I proceed so that I can have a working/workable instance of Sql Server Express 2012 that I can see in ssms (whatever required version) and also keep sql server 2008 R2?  which download should I select (from
    the picture below?
    Rich P

    Should I uninstall Sql server 2012 first?
    Rich P
    No you do not need to uninstall any thing
    >> Sql Server Express 2012 appears to be running -- per my services list, but I cannot see the instance in ssms 2008 R2.
    You need to just download SQL Server 2012 express management studio and use that to connect to SQL Server 2012. And use SSMS 2008 r2 to connect to SQL Server 2008 r2.
    This File :ENU\x64\SQLManagementStudio_x64_ENU.exe
    Although I guess SSMS 2012 express with SP2 would work just fine and you would connect to 2008 R2 database using that.

  • What version of SQL Server Management Studio do I need?

    I need to install SQL Server Management Studio on my windows 8.1 PRO 64-bit pc to manage SQL server 2008 R2. do I download the 2014 or 2012  or 2008 version?

    Hello,
    Install the SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) of the same version of SQL Server you have installed.
    If you modify maintenance plans using a newer version of SSMS, you then cannot use a lower version of SSMS to modify/change it again.
    Hope this helps.

  • Building New SQL Server To Migrate from Old one and need to figure out how I need to license it.

    So my head is spinning on setting up a New SQL Server.
    Current setup is Microsoft Server 2003 Standard and Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Standard. Nothing was maintained with Software assurance.
    Environment:
    Database is Limited to 2008 R2 Standard as Highest release I can use with it. So I know I need to do a Downgrade.
    New Server can Be either Microsoft Server standard 2008 or 2012 x64.
    The Domain Controller for right now is going to remain a Machine with Server 2003 Standard x86. It is Licensed with 30 Cals.
    The office Environment:
    The Office has any where from 5-7 employees.
    They have 3 Office locations and employees are in 1 of the three locations depending on the day.
    Between all 3 Offices they have 27 computers.
    Employees also can access multiple machines through out the day.
    Reception, Checkout and Third employee will be at their own machine.
    3 Employees will be accessing their main machine but also float to at the most 6 other machines located in the office these machines are logged in in the morning using their own user name Employees don't login or logout on them throughout the day.
    If they are in The Main Office they access the SQL server machine directly.
    If they are in one of the two satellite offices the Employees will access the SQL server through the front end running on Terminal Services running on the SQL server.
    My New Server will be Either a 4 or 6 core Xeon Processor.
    So the Questions.
    Lets say the scenario is I am buying Windows 2012 Server and Cals and Buying SQL 2012 Server and Cals and will be downgrading both to 2008.
    How do I need to license Windows Server? How many Cals do I need and what way should they be setup?
    How do I need to license SQL Server? By Server? By Core? How Many Cals do I need?
    Thank You.

    Hi,
    In addition, basically a downgrade is possible in case the SQL Server editions are the same. Downgrade is only supported in case a downgrade of e.g. SQL2012 Enterprise to SQL2008R2 Enterprise is done.
    I have attached a link to the SQL Server 2012 Licensing Reference Guide. Look at “Upgrades, Downgrades and Step-Ups” section of the document and check which version and editions are supported for the downgrade.

  • Migrating SQL Server development skills to Oracle

    Hi all,
    I've been working with SQL Server in a development capacity for about 7 years now. I'm no specialist, but I'm comfortable in it and am conversant in SQL Server terminology. I need to pick up similar development skills in Oracle. I don't need to know a lot about DBA stuff, perhaps just a few considerations for performance tuning. I won't be "switching" to Oracle, but rather picking up those skills and working on both platforms for the forseeable future.
    What I'm looking for is a book/white paper/website which gives me, as quickly as possible, a direct comparison between SQL Server and Oracle. Some of the things I might want to know are (in order):
    - Syntax differences between T-SQL and PL-SQL
    - T-SQL functions and equivalent Oracle/PL-SQL functions
    - Connection and setup methods (for one, I believe everything in Oracle resides in schemas generally under a single database?)
    - An overview of the reasons people would use Oracle rather than SQL Server
    Can anyone recommend a book in this regard? Failing that, can anyone recommend a book on Oracle which is, hopefully, more on the concise side and includes a function reference?
    Sam

    You can start with Oracle doc,
    Oracle® Database PL/SQL User's Guide and Reference
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/appdev.102/b14261/toc.htm
    I don't think there's side by side comparison reference between them. Some syntax is very different.
