I need to Move my Gmail IMAP to a new IMAP Host

We have 4 IMAP Gmail Business accounts.  We would like to move from Google and want to ensure we have all email and attachments.  The best suggestion I have heard is to create a new account in mail and copy the email to that account.  Pull the pin so to speak with Gmail and change the server settings in my 4 business accounts to sync with the new service.  Once we have verified email is working, copy the contents from the new account back to the old account.
What say you.
Thanks in advance !!
Sam

You do not need to create a new account. Assuming that you are using Apple Mail, you can create new mailboxes on your computer. These will be local mailboxes. Move your messages from the Google accounts to the local mailboxes. Once done, you can delete the google accounts. That will not affect the local mailboxes. Once you create the new accounts with you new provider, you can either leave them in the local mailboxes or move or copy messages to the new accounts.
You should also be able to just create the new accounts, move the messages from google to the new, then delete the google accounts.
Of course, it's also recommended that you have a backup of you computer or at least your data just in case a disaster occurs.

  • New iMac - need to move files from Macbook Pro to new iMac

    Hi there everyone,
Did some quick searching, but didn't find the answer that I needed.
I am picking up my new 27" iMac (base model) and will need to move my files and programs from my Macbook Pro to the iMac. What is the best way to accomplish this? Are there any tools on the iMac that will help do that, or is it a manual effort?
    Thanks!

When you first start new Mac it will ask you if you want to migrate. Say yes at that point and Setup Assistant will migrate everything for you.

  • Need to move from PSE5 on xp to new PC with win7 and 64 bit

Old computer is XP 32 bit and new laptop is Windows 7 64 bit. Do I need to buy new Elements 8 for the 64 bit pc and how do I move my photos over to new computer. I am not at all technical so thanks for any help.

    Hi
PSE5 is fine on 64 bit W7. There's various ways of moving your photos, I'd suggest "File", "Backup Catalog..." to an external hard drive or DVD and then "File", "Restore catalog" on new pc. That will transfer your cataog as well as your photos so captions,  tags etc are preserved.

  • Need to move files from G4 to my new laptop - HOW??

I am going to use my new laptop to mix DJ sets. Literally all of my music is already on my G4 in iTunes and as other aif files. How can I transfer the music files over to my new laptop - I don't want to have to input all the music again...that would literally take weeks as it is over 26 GB worth of files.
I know that you can hook the laptop up to the computer (by firewire I assume)and boot one up while starting up the other and holding down a certain key or combination of keys on either the laptop or computer. Then the laptop is like another drive from the G4 and you can copy files back and forth between the two. I need to do this.
Can anyone tell me the specifics of how to do this??

Note that migrating to an Intel Mac from a PowerPC Mac should be done carefully.
A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate.  Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3 or G4 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
    Screensavers written for the PowerPC
    System Preference add-ons
    All Unsanity Haxies
    Browser and other plug-ins
    Contextual Menu Items
Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5
    Kernel extensions
Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior (does not work), TechTool Pro (pre-4.5.1 versions do not work), SuperDuper (newest release works), and Drive Genius (untested) may not work properly on Intel-Macs.  The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

  • I need to move my itunes library to a new computer due to a crash

My computer with my entire itunes library has crashed.  How can I move what's on my iphone to my laptop?

First, let me say that I fully sympathize with your problem as I've had the exact same thing happen to me this past week. Everything that you've downloaded and purchased through iTunes can be redownloaded to another computer, which you can then sync with your iPhone and keep your content (minus contacts/calendars/and any music not bought through iTunes). Go to www.apple.com/support/itunes, select the Music Purchases tab in the column beneath Get Customer Service, open the Lost or Missing Items tab, and on the right hand side open the linked words saying Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store. A detailed explanation of recovering everything will be explained in steps according to the problem. Hope this helps!

iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

  • Need to move lightroom 3 to another computer

I purchased a full version of lightroom and downloaded it from Adobe's web page. I now need to move the full version to a new computer and delete it from the old one. Can anyone please provide instructions on how to move a downloaded version.

Just download another copy. It's the serial number you need and this will be valid for as many installations as you wish to make, no need for activation. Under the license that you purchase you can only have LR installed on two machines at any one time, so you don't need to remove your original instillation. You can only use one copy at a time. This allows you to have an instillation on a laptop and desktop or at home and work or however you choose.
To copy your catalog over just copy the lrcat file.
    From LR FAQ
How many computers are covered by a single license of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3?
Subject to the terms of the software license agreement, the primary user of the computer on which Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 is installed may install a second copy of the software for his or her exclusive use on either a portable computer or a computer located at his or her home, provided that the software on the second computer is not used at the same time as the software on the primary computer. Lightroom is sold as multiplatform software, which means it can be installed on either Mac OS X or Windows.

  • MOVE ALL from old PBG4 to new PBG4

How do I move all my old PBG4 system, applications, documents to a new PBG4?
The old PBG4 Ti is 3+ years old and being replaced with a new latest greatest 15" PBG4. The old PB is running OS 10.4.4 and all the apps are working great however, it won't write DVD. 2 optical drive replacements and a logic board replacement have not solved the problem so I'm getting a new PBG4 from AppleCare. Now I need to move my existing environment to the new machine and need to know how to do it properly. I have several 250GB external drives and a bootable external drive. I want to make sure all my mail, addresses, databases (Quickbooks) etc. get moved to my new computer. Thanks-Roger

You can use your old PB in Target mode to move all the files, the documentation that comes with the new PB will explain this. You will need a firewire cable to connect the two, and follow the instructions on screen.
You can also clone your drive and then clone it back to the new computer, but personally I would use the Target mode method. Make sure you do have a complete backup, and clone if you have the space, until you are sure all the files you want have been brought to your new computer.

  • Backup Gmail using Mail.app and IMAP

I would like to backup my Gmail emails using Apple Mail. I have IMAP turned on in Gmail. I know I need to add the account in Mail but I'm not sure what to do after that. I'm thinking I need to create a local mail folder in order to store the emails.
Also, how could I automate this? Is Mail the best option for this scenario? Again, I'm only wanting this as a backup for Gmail.

How about avoiding redundancy (http://superuser.com/questions/114253/backup-gmail-using-mail-app-and-imap-witho ut-redundancy)?
I got this all working, there's even this literally great guide on my superuser post (http://db.tidbits.com/article/10253) but IMAP generates a lot of repeated files due to gmail labels nature.
Anyone knows a way to circle around this and still be able to use IMAP and labels with mail.app and gmail?

  • Where is my IPhoto Library?  Need to move it, and cannot find it...

    Hi to all,
I am running out of space on my iMac's HD and I need to move some files to an external HD. Looked up on this forum on how to move my iPhoto Library and it says to go into my Pictures folder, find the iPhoto Libray and just copy it to the xternal HD, then reboot iPhoto with the ption key pressed and point iPhoto to the IPhoto Library's new location. Pretty simple.
HOWEVER, when I go into my Pictures folder there is no iPhoto Library with all my photos...! What gives? Can someone asssist with this situation. I see all my photos and events fine in iPhoto, so those pics are somewhere...
    Thank you all.
    PS
    I am using iPhoto 8, v.7.1.4.

Was there a question in there?
With iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is now a Unix Style Package File. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
You can make back ups of the iPhoto Library using Time Machine or any of hundreds of back up utilities that parse the Library. These can make incremental back ups. I use DejaVu but there are many, many others, search on MacUpdate.
You can use iPhoto with Photoshop very easily: You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Lightroom and Aperture are different from Photoshop because they are essentially the same as iPhoto - just rather more powerful. In other words, like iPhoto they are databases. The want to manage the files, just like iPhoto does.
Note: Neither Lightroom or Aperture are Photo Editors like Photoshop.
There is integration between Aperture and iPhoto, but none whatever between Lightroom and iPhoto. Bluntly, you’ll need to choose between the two.
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto. With 10.5 you can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
    Regards
    TD

  • ASA 5505 Failure replaced and need to move the license key?

Can someone point me in the right direction? My ASA 5505 died due to a power surge and I swapped it with a spare. I had Security Plus and a 50 user license and need to move the license keys from the failed ASA 5505 to the new one. I kept both my emails with the activation keys, but not sure how I get this transferred?  Thanks in advance.
    Joe

I think this is totally unacceptable. For anyone else who uses a 5505 at home and has bought licenses and the hardware out of their own pocket, the idea here should be that you've already bought the hardware and the license. Seems obvious, right?
Yes I can see the license being device specific if not only because that's the way you've designed your licensing activation schema; but if I've just had your product fail and bought another replacement, there should be an understanding or agreement between Cisco and the user that we can reinstate any licenses we've already bought.
Do you really believe it's fair to make someone buy something from you twice, something that they've already bought from you? Do you actually believe that? I believe that the people in the Cisco Licensing department would agree with my viewpoint and I have a pending case with them for this issue right now. I will post my result here.
Make your products last and perhaps I can give credence to your licensing beliefs, until then your products fail and so does your licensing logic.
