I need to recover much of my iTunes library

I had a lot of music in my iTunes account and now much of it seems to be missing.  How can I get it back?

You might (depending upon what country that you are in) be able to re-download it via the Purchased tab in the iTunes store app on your iPad, or via the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes Store home page on your computer's iTunes. Do you have a backup copy of it on, for example, an external drive ?

  • Need to recover old playlists, old iTunes library will not open because it was created by a newer version?

I have a Mac mini, have installed iTunes on it and want to find some old playlists that were lost.  I have several 'iTunes Libraries' with different dates but I cannot open any of them becauseit says they were created with a newer version of iTunes.  Please help!

Somewhere in your process you ended up with an earlier version of iTunes than was used last with the library. iTunes 10.6.3 is the highest version that will run under OSX 10.5.8
    iTunes 10.6.3.25 - http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1575
If you had an earlier version and still want that version I am not sure how to go about this.  My iTunes library file does not say it was created with a particular version, although I admit I have not looked at the .xml copy to see if it is buried in the file itself.  Apple only has a very limited number of iTunes versions openly posted, though you can still find just about any version if you look in the right places.  You would have to kind of start low and work your way up to where you want to be since once you open a library with a version it cannot be reverted to an earlier version (make backups first).

    * Need help recovering music on iPod/iTunes *
I bought my iPod 30G when it first came out back in the day. With the protective case it looks like a Walkman, if you know what that is. The new ones are half the thickness of my old skool one. lol!
Anyway, years ago I accidently uploaded a virus in both my PC and laptop. Yeah, real *******. Well, the person who restored my computers couldn't save my music. I still have the iPod but my library on iTunes is gone. If I try to update my iPod in either computer it will erase every song I have on it and only upload the songs/album I'm trying to add. I'm told that this is something Apple did to prevent file sharing, blah, blah, blah...
Does anyone know a way around it? I keep buying CDs just not able to load them into my iPod thru iTunes.

    Hello yourantihero,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
There are several ways you can pull the music off your iPod and onto iTunes. The first link below provides step-by-step instructions for the direct method if you have a PC as well as a few third party applications (for both the Mac and PC) if you choose to go that route instead. You can also do a simple Google search for "copy music from iPod to computer" and you should receive a number of sites that can help you out.
Just make sure that when you have your iPod plugged into your computer, that you don't hit "Erase and Sync" before completing the task of copying your music over.
Also, if you have any purchased music, you will probably have to re-authorize your computer by heading to the Store drop down menu and choosing "Authorize computer."

  • How to Recover Playlists when Transferring iTunes Library from External Drive to New Computer

iTunes library copied to external drive and then loaded to new computer. All songs are there but all of the playlists that I had set up do not appear. I cannot figure out how to retrieve/recover them. The back-up was not done by me so I'm not sure of the steps that were followed. Is there something special that needs to be done when backing up to external drive in terms of saving playlists? Help!

    Hello TNCGRCT,
It sounds like the library was successfully transferred to the new computer, but the songs were imported into a new iTunes library. If you still have access to the external drive, or better yet the previous computer, we will want to transfer the iTunesLibrary.itl file and open it with iTunes:

  • Need help have lost my entire itunes library

Hi, i put my ipod on charge through my usb, my music is on my ipod, but my computer is telling me that the ipod is synced with another itunes library. do you want to erase this ipod and sync with this itunes library, i have only synced with this one computer please help!!!

    Hello ashme1985,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
I don't know why your iPod is doing exactly, but I do know that if the music on your iPod is no longer in your iTunes library, you'll need to copy it back over to it. I say this because your only solution now is to *Erase and Sync* as it says.
See this article for instructions on how to copy the music back over to your Windows machine.

  • Need Help!  I lost entire itunes library after copying "My Music" folder to an external hard drive.

I was recently hire by one of my sisters friends to set up a new computer and to repair wireless router.  The client asked me to copy music files from their old computer to an external hard drive so that they could be transfered to the new computer. So I connected the external hard drive to the old computer and copyed the entire "My Music" folder to it.  I never deleted files from the old computer. I did however uninstall a few applications at the clients request such as Microsoft Office and Kodak EasyShare which have nothing to do with itunes.  I got a call from the client a few hours later stating that their entire itunes music library is no longer there.  I do not have much experince with itunes this just doesnt make any sense to me.  I am sure the music is there but itunes is not pulling it up.   Can someone please tell me how to fix this problem?
    Thanks so much

  • Do I need to save in my music iTunes library the previous library, iTunes 3 or 4 libraries?

Do I need to save the "previous library", or iTunes 3 or 4 Music Libraries, or the iTunes 4 Music Library (old) in my music/iTunes folder?
    Trying to declutter my library.
Currently using iTunes 10.5.3; therefore, is the old stuff necessary?

    From http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1660
"New versions of iTunes sometimes include enhancements to the iTunes library. When you open the new version of iTunes, iTunes upgrades your existing library to the new format and places a copy of the old library in the Previous Libraries folder. If everything goes fine during your upgrade to the latest version of iTunes, you can delete the older iTunes Library files."

  • Need help re-arranging tracks in iTunes Library and on iPod nano

Hi. I'm currenty ripping my father-in-laws 60 disc set of the complete audio Bible onto to his iPod nano for him. All was going well for discs 1 through 22. All the CD info (track names, album title, etc) had been found for all discs, and as I ripped the CD's in the proper order, the tracks were holding they're proper order in my iTunes Library and on the ipod nano as I updated it occasionally. When I ripped disc 23 (I Chronicles 19 through II Chronicles 10) onto my computer, I didnt notice that iTunes was unable to retrieve the CD info for that disc, so it ripped all the tracks as "Track 1," "Track 2," etc. It wasnt untill after I finished ripping discs 24 through 29 that I noticed the error. I re-named all the tracks following the proper spelling, capatalization, etc as all the other discs had used, and updated the artist, album, and genre fields exactly as the other discs, assuming that as soon as I did that iTunes would properly arrange the tracks between I Chronicles 18 and II Chronicles 11 in my iTunes Library. Instead it stuck all my newly renamed tracks before Genesis 1, the first track. I updated the nano hoping they would arrange properly on it, but it didnt. I Chronicles 19 through II Chronicles 10 come before Genesis 1. I've been playing around in iTunes trying to figure out how to rearrange tracks in my Library, but havent been able to figure out how. Any help would be appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You may need to set the track number, and sort by that, since these are not in alphabetical order.
Right click where it says Name in iTunes (on top of the song list). Put a check mark next to/click Track Number. See if the other songs have track numbers. They may be sorted by that. If so, you'd have to add track numbers to all those other tracks, and then sort by that (right click a song, go to get info, click the info tab, and add the track number).
If it's not track number, try and find out what they are being sorted by.

  • Need to put songs on my iTunes library!!

My memory on my computer was erased by a virus. All my songs were deleted, including my iTunes. However, i still had my songs on my iPod. Is there any way to put those songs back onto my computer even though i had to reinstall iTunes? Can i put them on the new iTunes library? If i cant, can i still put songs on my iPod with deleting the ones i already have on it?

    Hi, Sanan!
    Welcome to the Discussions!
First of all, I don't personally own an iPod (yet). That being said, I can explain how it works with iTunes so you can better understand your situation and how to overcome it.
First of all, there are two basic ways to sync iTunes song files on the computer with the songs on the iPod; auto sync and manual sync. If you have an iPod with music on it but the music is not in iTunes on the PC, when you auto-sync the two, the computer "updates" the iPod automatically when you connect it to sync. Since there's nothing on the computer, it overwrites your iPod and updates it with zero song files, leaving you with an empty iPod which matches your iTunes folder. To work around this, you must turn off the auto-sync preference and change it to manual sync, after which you can selectively add music files to the iPod without losing the files that are already on it.
Apple does not support syncing the iPod in reverse; that is, transferring your music from the iPod to a computer. (It can only do this if it's set up as a "hard drive", as opposed to the way it's normally configured, which is as a "music player".) However, there are third-party workarounds, which I referred to in the link in my previous post, which will enable you to transfer/recover your music files from the iPod back to the computer.
Regarding your iTunes account, if you "lost" your iTunes application and iTunes Music folder by a major drive failure or something along those lines, you can reinstall iTunes on your computer, go to the Music Store, and log in again just like before, using your existing login and password. You can continue to use the Store just like you did before the fiasco occurred. The only difference is that you will have a clean Purchased Music Smart folder on the PC after the reinstall, which is no big deal.
I hope that this eases your concerns a bit and gets you started on recovering your iTunes files from the iPod, the details of which are in the link I previously provided.

  • Recover deleted songs from itunes library

i have accidentely deleted some music files from my itunes library. however the songs are saved in the ipad2. how can i copy them back to itunes library in the pc?

There are restrictions on what iTunes will transfer from the iPad to the PC, but there are paid and free 3rd party apps that do a good job of transferring just about any type of files that you have between the iPad and your PC.
Do a search on Transferring music from iPad to PC.

  • I need help in the way my Itunes Library shows on my Windows PC

I am a novice. I liked the way Itunes sorted my Library which was by Artist, album, and the had the tracks in order. However, I did something and now I cannot get it to restore that way. I can get any one (like album) but then I canot get tracks in order ie it will do all the 1's and then all the two's etc... I just want it to be simple

  • Is there a way to rebuild the ITunes Library XML file from my IPod?

After several promptings, I finally decided to install ITunes 7.4.3.1. Like a fool, I did not backup my entire library prior to doing this upgrade. Nothing is going to go wrong now mate, is it? Everything seemed to proceed just fine with the upgrade. I noticed that ITunes updated the XML Library in the process. Where the problems occured was after the upgrade, I was in the middle of listening to the latest "NPR Wait Wait Don't Tell Me" Podcast (I have some 3,000 downloaded podcasts in over 85GB worth of space) when ITunes crashed. When I brought ITunes back up, it had seemed to have reverted to an earlier backup ITunes Library XML file that I had made months ago.
I still have all of the .mp3, .m4a, .mp4 and .m4v files stored in my ITunes Music folder. Somehow when I brought ITunes back up, it had lost all of the music I had dowloaded from the ITunes store even though the files were still out on disk. It thought there were only 395 podcasts despite the 3,000 plus files out there.
Clearly, something went horribly wrong and I don't want to spend weeks downloading these files again when the only thing that really needs to be done is the ITunes Library XML data file needs to be rebuilt. It dawns on me that my IPod has an XML data file that save any updates I have not yet synced with it that it is quite current. Is there some way that I can sync my IPod with ITunes and copy the IPod XML data file into ITunes Library XML data file? I know that there must be some way to access the IPod since I can plug it into my Kenwood car stereo and read through the IPod's contents.
Is there anyone out there that has an idea that might be able to help me recover my ITunes library?
    Thanks for any assistance,
    --randyt00

The XML file is not used by iTunes. It is created for the use of other programs. Your library is in the itl file. SInce you still have the file you could simply add them to your library using the add folder option instead of downloading again.

  • I want to recreate my iTunes library

I have my Library [folders and everything] on an external drive and backed up.  I consolidated my music etc. and now items which were available - and after spotlight check still are - are not 'found' and there are too many to Locate to handle it that way [unless someone knows an automator script?]   Looking at the iTunes folder it appears to me that it consolidated everything into an iTunes Music Folder inside the original one...doubled the size of the iTunes folder.
It would be much easier for me to just back up everything and then do a totally new blank library and add to that library what I want = it's not a major issue to lose playlists but I do have other things which I don't want to lose = iTunesU, Podcasts, Mobile Apps etc - and the library now does sync/backup with an iPhone, iPod and two iPads so of course don't want to lose that.
Any suggestions as to how best to handle this???  I don't care about having dups - I have Dupin and TidyUp and can handle them that way.  But I really want everything in one place to start then go from there.

This may be what you need: How to re-create your iTunes library: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451
However, you could also try this first:  Use the iTunes File menu -> Add to library and select the iTunes music folder. This will add anything not already in iTunes.
