Hello cor-el, thanks for your reply. I changed my settings for downloads to desktop and it has appeared on there. When I double click I am asked which program I want to open file. I click firefox and another box "opening install" says I have chosen to open the file which is an application and do I want to save it. This is the only real option so I press save file. I get a box saying this is an executable file which may contain viruses - do you want to run. I press ok and the final box showing C drive file name and desktop appears stating application not found.
This happens the same whenever I try to install.
To my untrained eye the application is not being recognised as an application and I cannot work out how to get it to do that.
My plugin is still showing as out of date.
Is there anything you could suggest. Thanks for your time.

Just hold down the power button for about ten seconds and the machine will turn off.
I'm not sure how fast your Internet speed is but my Mavericks downloads usually only take about 20-25 minutes for a 5.33GB file.
No telling what will be waiting for your when you power back on... call back if you can't login to your computer.

    Apple's activation server is down.
I called Apple and the support team had the same issue.
All you can do is be patient.

Installing Software Update has been running for over an hour, anyone else have the same issue?

Hopefully it's been resolved by now - I have no idea how large each one of those files are. The progress bar tells you; FWIW, I only download one at a time - makes it easier and faster and you can choose to do the next one when you have time.

I tried quitting and starting again but it just jumps back to the same spot.

It is quite large, but I have tried two of the fixes suggested and things now seem to be moving along.

  • After rebooting my Windows Vista 64 bit system, could not access iTunes; after uninstalling I tried reinstalling, but it has been running for more than 24 hrs. Should I cancel installation?

I had been updating my Windows Vista 64 bit system and as a result of a problem, had to reboot my system. Afterwards, I was no longer able to access iTunes.  I got a message stating that there was a problem with some of the files associated with the application.  A phone rep at Apple's Customer Service provided me with emails linking instructions on completely uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes. I did the uninstall, then checked for lingering iTunes files and couldn't completely remove some, but tried intalling the latest version of iTunes. It has been running for roughly 24 hours.  The status bar is green all the way across, and when I try to cancel, I get the following message: "Are you sure you want to cancel iTunes installation?"  I keep hitting "no," but am staring to wonder if there is a problem with the install.  Should it take this long if I have roughly 134 gigs of music?  I can still see the music in my computer's C drive, so I am worried that there is an error, perhpas because I didn't clear out all the lingering C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\ and all the lingering C:\Program Files\iTunes\.  Any thoughts?

It is not just the HP. I have 3 HP computes and 2 Dell computers. 2 of the HP and 1 Dell suffer the iTunes internet block. Took me a while to figure it out also. But, the one thing that is different on the Dell, is that I can leave iTunes installed and not open it and everything works. As soon as I open it, internet access goes down. BUT secure sites (https:) works fine.

  • IMac randomly shuts down.. Can anyone help?

My 5 year old iMac has decideded to randomly die on me..
I was using it the other day when it all of a sudden lost power and shut down, every time I tried to re-boot it I could hear the fan/it trying to come on but nothing happened.
I have left it for a few days and come back to it tonight, it switched on fine for a few minutes then same thing again.
Now I can't get it to stay on for more than about 30 seconds (and not enough time to get the file off it that I desperately need!)
Research on the web seems to point to anything from overheating (again I can't keep it on long enough to check the utilities for this, although it doesn't seem very hot!), logic board to power supply to virus'.
Has anyone had this problem and resolved it or can suggest anything I can do? I've tried leaving it off and unplugging it. Tried unplugging all the stuff from it (printers etc) I can't get a genius appointment until next week and need to get a file off it for a presentation tomorrow!
    Any help appreciated!

This could be due to an issue with the System Managment Controller. What you should do is try to reset the SMC. This will help reset the power flow of the computer back to the factory defaults in case something became corrupted throughout general usage. (Steps Below)
There could also be environmental variables that caused it, even a power surge that could have cooked something internally. Some power surges you may not even notice because they can be small, but just enough to damage a component. Do you use a surge protection power strip?
    SMC Reset on iMac: ( http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964 )
1- Unplug the power cord from the back of the computer.
    2- Wait 15 seconds.
3- Plug the Power Cord back in
    4- Wait 5 seconds.
    5- Boot the computer.
Let it run for a bit (if possible) and see how long it will stay on.
If doing the SMC reset does not do the trick, then the problem will most likely be due to a Logic Board error and will unfortunately need to be diagnosed at the Genius bar.
Good luck MissLKMorgan! Let us know what happens.

  • My iBook is also shutting down randomly. Can anyone help?

    Hello!
So I appear to be in the same boat as many of the folks on this board. My iBook (bought new in June 1996 - I am still on the original battery) will shut down after a few minutes if I don't have it plugged in even though the battery does not show any signs of being drained.
    So here are some details:
    • Shut down happens when the adapter is unplugged. Has never happened when plugged in.
    • When plugged in to the adapter the battery charge level (listed as a percentage in the gray bar in upper right corner of screen next to an American flag and the time) never gets above 98% no matter how long it is plugged in.
    • Even though the charge level says 98% the tip of my barrel plug for the adapter is green not the amber color when it has a low charge.
    • The details listed in "About This Mac" for battery are:
    Battery Information:
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 2476
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 2430
    Amperage (mA): 0
    Voltage (mV): 16301
    Cycle Count: 287
I tried resetting the PRAM and as far as I can tell it did not do anything - it definitely didn't solve the problem.
So yes, it would mean the world to me if someone could help me out. I really need a computer that I can trust on the go for work this weekend and am in no position to buy a whole new laptop. So yeah, any help or advice would be amazing!
    Thank you!!
    Ryan

The plastic part and screw twisted off. I can push the tab in with a screwdriver to latch it. I have the screw and battery taped and it seems to stay in place, but I should get it fixed. Just saving up the money for it.
I am now trying the battery and let it drain and recharge, as I have neglected to do that lately.
    Thanks for answering!

p.s it just dumped me at 53% capacity when I restarted. I came back to session where I was dropped and continued typing.
Thanks for the info and suggestions! I know I need to get some stuff done on this thing soon!

  • When I try to open up camera raw it shuts down Adobe Bridge, can anyone help?

I am using mac. My problem at first was that when I tried to open a RAW image it would just shut down either photoshop cs4 or bridge cs4. Then I installed that Camera Raw 5.2 update, now I can open a raw image if I double click it from my desktop. But once I am in bridge and try to open a raw image, it loads for a few seconds and shuts down bridge. Is there a way to fix this?
Even when I when I try to change the camera raw preferences in bridge (File > camera raw preferences) that also shuts down bridge.

Go to photoshop, and check , in the Photoshop menu>about plug-ins
What version of camera raw do you see?
There should only be one camera raw plug-in installed at the default location (check the read-me or the FAQ of this forum)

  • My mail application is canceling my shut down request. Can anyone help?

When I try to shutdown or restart my Macbook I receive a message saying that the mail application has canceled my request. This is despite me having already quit the mail application. After I receive this message the mail application starts up again. I have tried using "force quit" to fully quit the mail application, but get the same result. I haven't been able to shut down my Macbook for a couple of days. Has anyone any idea of what's happening?

Tomfromblackrock, if you're Activity Monitor does not indicate that Mail is "Not Responding" then I suggest you hold down the power button on your machine until it powers down.  I have had this problem, too and that is the only way I have been able to shut down.
My email account was hacked into and shut down by my provider until I changed my password.  Ever since I have not been able to close Mail or shut down my machine.  Also, when I do this extreme shutdown I have found that Mail automatically launches upon restart.  I do not have it designated to do so.  I would love to know if your Mail program does the same thing.  Good luck.

  • My mac wont shut down or restart, can anyone help?

    Hi,

    Can anyone advise?

I'm having the same problem.  Are you connecting to a Windows VPN or File share?

  • Can I interrupt an automatic update to iPhoto? If so, how? And how can I stop automatic updates? This current update has been running for over 4 hours now. I have a MacBook Pro w/OSX 10.9.1

Can I interrupt an automatic update to iPhoto? Also, how can I turn OFF  automatic updates?

as Larry said, just a caution about the App Store Preferences:
If you do not want your software to update automatically, disable "Install app updates".  But better not disable the option "Install system data files and security updates".  If there are security updates available, it is important to get them installed asap.
