I recently got an iphone 5S and my songs not purchased from iTunes are grayed out (phone only) and are skipped past when playing them through my iPhone. i have tried the following:
1) Removing all music from phone and resynced to iTunes PC library.
2) Erased phone and restored from back up
3) Erased phone and started as a new iPhone
4) Reformated the music files in my library that weren't playing
5) Deleted songs from iPhone and computer and re-imported CDs
6) Tried to redownload my COMPLETE MUSIC LIBRARY from iCloud.
7) I have also turned it off and turned it back on several times
8) I tried syncing through my macbook (only moved partial songs to it to see if it would even work).
9) I have tried to get Siri to play them, did not work.
10) All music does play fine on my iPod Touch 3rd (iOS6 i think) gen and iTunes on Mac and PC
11) I added a CD to my roommates iTunes and it plays on their iPhone 5S but not mine.
After all of these things it is now WORSE!!! My iTunes purchased songs are now experiencing the same issue along with some (not all) of the original music files that were skipping and grayed out. My conclusion is i have no clue at this point! I have done everything i have found online in EVERY discussion, i have spent over 60 hours trying to get this to work and i am asking myself, i bought this product why am having to fix this when it worked just fine on my iPod touch (3rd Gen) and iPod Classic!!!! PLEASE APPLE FIX THIS ISSUE FOR US!!!!

I had this problem too after i upgdatd to OS X Mavericks... only the songs on my iphone 5s that i purchased from itunes would play.
i read something about it being a syncing issue. when you plug your phone into your computer with the usb cable, the person said to switch from automatic syncing of itunes to the "manual" option. mine was already set to manual so i wasn't sure anything would work. BUT, when i plugged my phone into my computer, it started to sync all of my music on my phone again (top of itunes bar where song playing/time is listed said "now syncing 123/534 songs to x's iphone"). once that was completed, i checked the music app on my iphone and everything was back to normal!
so, i would suggest setting your music syncing settings to manual if you haven't tried that yet!

Unless you subscribe to iTunes Match , Apple does not keep a backup of your iTunes library. Even then it is not the library as it exists on your computer, but some version of the media, and only media files, not playlists. Even then not all media are definitely available since anything removed from the iTunes Store since you purchased it is not available for re-download.

In your case it sounds like you will have to obtain non iTunes purchases from their original source or a backup you may have made at some time in the past.

Do you have an active data connection (wifi or cellular)? Have you tried resetting the phone by pressing and holding the Home and power buttons until the apple appears (this is different than just turning it off and back on).

The iphone/ipad/ipod is not a backup/storage device. The sync is one way - computer to iphone/ipad/ipod.
Copy everything from your old computer or your backup copy of your old computer.

ITunes won't sync any music that was not purchased from iTunes onto my iPhones 5S

I have updated to Mavericks on my macbook, and iTunes will no longer sync my iPhone 5S properly. It does not remove any music that has been deleted. My phone will no longer play any music that was not purchased from iTunes. I tried to delete all my music and download it again, but iTunes would not remove it from the phone. Is anyone having a similar problem? Any ideas to get things back to normal? I am restoring from back up as I type, but I doubt it will solve my problem.

I had the exact same problem since upgrading to Mavericks. When I tried to copy the music from iTunes, either wifi or wired, it appeared in 'On this phone' greyed out. Forcing a sync didn't help. I noticed too that iTunes showed odd values for the amount of space available on the phone - around 9GB compared to 27GB on the phone itself.
I solved the problem by turning off iTunes Match, turning it back on again, then reconnecting my iPhone.

Music that I have purchased from iTunes syncs perfectly to the iPhone (3GS) but the music from my library that was not purchased from iTunes (burned from a CD) will show up in the iPhone music list but does not have any artwork nor will it play that music! Currently my solution has been to delete the defunct music from the iPhone and recopy it from iTunes. The music will then play but the artwork is missing. This is a rather irritating problem. Is anyone else having this issue? If so, any are any other solutions? Thanks!

I have just noticed that I am missing songs since I upgraded to iOS5. In some cases the art work is there and the length of the song is there but it will not play. I'm going to try and resync when I get home. I'll have to check to see if the songs still exist in my iTunes??? Nothing is ever easy is it??

Many thanks JEM24 for your help. Ive just spent the best part of six hundred pounds on a new Sony Rx100m2 compact camera, so I have no interest in the Ipods camera at all really. I doubt Ill be watching many videos on it as Im very lucky in that I have a good Android tablet. Its more as a stock music player that Ill be buying the Ipod for, if indeed I do end up buying one. I dont like the idea of paying the exorbitant amount added for more memory space that Apple along with most other companies charge. In fact I read an article on this very subject just yesterday in the tech section of Flipboard. It stated in the article that in the case of the Iphone the actual cost of each additional gigabyte of storage to Apple et al is something in the order of 60p.. This is certainly not reflected in the price us the customer has to pay at the till.. Its for this reason primarily that Apple in particular, because their products do not allow adding expandable memory of your own in the form of cheap to buy cards, that nobody in their right mind buys the 64gig etc Iphones..I am aware that we are discussing my potential purchase of an Ipod Touch here but you see my point. I accidentally wiped out all the memory from my desktop computer, including all the music from my Window's media player and itunes. All of my favorite music is stored on my iPhone, most of which was not bought from iTunes. iTunes only synced the music I purchased directly from iTunes, but I want to know if there's a way I can get the music I didn't buy from iTunes off my iPhone and back on my computer. Oh my gosh I had the EXACT same problem, and for ages I couldn't figure out how to fix it until today. Here's what I did:
First I went onto my computer, opened itunes, and un-installed tumblr, vine and kik. These were the apps I was having problems with (it said I had them on my phone but, like you, they didn't show).
Then I went to the itunes store, searched for each one, and it said I could update them so I did (just FYI: for tumblr a window popped up saying "please click ok to confirm you are 17 years or older", so I did that also)
When I went back to my phone and tried installing them again (still on my computer), it worked!
