I want to transfer my files from my old iMac to the external drive, but I'm afraid that doing that will compromise the use of the external drive on my new iMac. I have not downloaded the external drive's software onto my old Mac because of this concern. May I simply "drag and drop" the contents I want transferred to the external drive, then set up my new Mac with the drive and download there? or is there a better procedure? Comments? Help?

If your intention is to copy a just documents and data (word processing files and music for example) then yes, you can use drag and drop. If you want to transfer data and applications and permissions, it would actually be easiest to connect the drive to your old computer and turn on TimeMachine. Once TM is finished, connect the drive to your new computer and restart it holding the option key to get into Recovery mode. Then you can use the restore from TM option to transfer your data and programs to the new computer.

A direct FireWire transfer (especially if it's 800 to 800) is going to be the fastest method. TimeCapsule would work, if you connect to it via Ethernet, via wireless it would be quite slow (especially if you have a large library).

In iTunes, did you click your iPhone under "devices" then go through the tabs to set things up? There's one setting that you need to check to sync contacts.

I have a new MacBookAir with iTunes 11.3. All my music was transferred from my old MacBookPro; but, only purchased music from Apple shows up in albums, and songs. None of my other music appears, and no playlists have been displayed.

How to get non-purchased from Apple music and playlists to appear on my new MacBookAir with Mavericks, and iTunes 11.3, when all the prior music was transferred from MacBookPro. I see the library.itl files, and have removed them and imported the Library.xml file; but, still do not have access to playlists or any music I have taken from my CD collection. Nothing new; same thing i have been posting for years. Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder. Without exact details I can't tell what you did wrong but you probably didn't move the right files to the right place. Unfortunately youd id not want to delete the .itl file. The .xml has much of the same but your ratings, date added and playcounts are now gone.

You should import the music (that is listed in Windows Media Player) into your iTunes Library - on your computer - to add it to your existing iTunes Library. I take it you have moved (or copied) your music from the old computer to the new computer, haven't you?
Then Sync your iPod to that Library.
iPods will not respond to Windows Media Player, they're designed to connect to iTunes.

I have already updated my Migration Assistant program and changed my FireWall settings to allow all incoming connections, but Migration Assistant still isn't working. I get all the way to the passcode verification step, and then it stops working. On my new computer, a message pops up saying that it could not connect to my old computer. On my old computer, I can enter the passcode, but then the little spinny beachball shows up and then Migration Assistant loses its connection and begins to "look for other computers." How do I fix this? My old computer is operating on Leopard and my new computer is operating on Mountain Lion.

You can do it wirelessly, but that will take some time... you could also purchase a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter or a Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter. That would certainly be faster. You should be able to purchase either adapter at your local Apple Store or at the online Apple Store.

by reset option do you mean the DFU restore? worked for me, have you tried that?
if not - hold the lock and home button until the power down bar comes up. then hold the lock button for ten seconds - next continue to hold the lock button and press the home button for ten seconds - next release the lock button and hold the home button for 10 seconds. this should be done with the phone tethered. If done right and your itunes is configured as such, the phone will reload the drivers and start up itunes, and then prompt for a restore/update.
