I think I killed my iPod Nano by trying to install iPodLinux on it.

Copied and pasted from my topic on GameFAQs message boards
So I tried to install iPodLinux on my iPod to play pong, watch videos, you know, all that stuff.
I went through the install fine, I set it to load the iPodLinux as default bootup or whatever. I unhooked the iPod and tried to boot it up, and it just brought me to a screen that said "www.apple.com/support/ipod" with a picture of a folder and a ! by it.
So after it said that, it just wouldn't turn on anymore. I went to the site and their suggestion was the 5 R's
I did the the 5 R's
( * 1. Reset your iPod.
* 2. Retry with a different USB port.
* 3. Restart your computer.
* 4. Reinstall iPod and iTunes software.
* 5. Restore your iPod. )
Fortuneately the #1 Rest your iPod got it back on, but it's still stuck at the "www.apple.com/support/ipod" screen when I set it up.
So I decided to try #5 Restore your iPod, and it said "Initializing...." and then did that for about 5 minutes, then finally came up as "iPod could not be mounted."
Then I restarted the computer and tried again, made sure the USB was properly in, the 'Do not disconnect the iPod' screen came up, tried to load the iPod Updater again to restore it, same results.
Sooo... If I can't get it mounted in iPod Updater to restore it, what should I do?
Thanks to anyone who helps, and I'll promise never to mess with electronics ever again, because they always win.
Thanks!
What I tried
Okay, Update:
I go into My Computer to format it, and then I do this
http://img107.imageshack.us/img107/4430/uhoh7pu.jpg
As you can see, it didn't work.
I downloaded the the newest iPod Updater from Apple's site and it let me click Restore on it, which got my hopes up, then shattered them when it came up with "Can't mount iPod.".
I then also did what davidd said. Uninstalled the iPod software (not iTunes, just the other thing that was on the CD).
Plugged the Nano back in and tried to go to iPod updater and still, didn't work.
So it's still not working, anymore ideas?
Any other suggestions?
All above is copied and pasted from a topic on GameFAQs regarding this problem... why did I install iPodLinux? Well, I saw a topic on digg about it, and it said if it didn't work I could always just click the Restore button and restore everything, but if you read above, that's not an option or me anymore.
So, did trying to install iPodLinux on my Nano void my warrenty and I'll just have to live with it, or is there ANY way I can somehow restore it?
Thanks to anyone who helps me.

Wow, thank you so much!
Turns out there was a topic on the forums there with guy having same problem and they linked him to topics that saved his iPod too.
Thank you so much, it works now

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu.
If you have a PowerPC Mac, buy a new, secondhand, or refurbished Intel Mac.
If you have an Intel Mac, phone the online Apple Store and order a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD.

  • My iMac 24" killed my iPod Nano

Recently my iMac froze while doing numerous things at once. It wasn't a normal kernel panic, as it didn't show the small grey box. I waited a while to see if whatever had caused the system to halt would resume, but nothing changed. I tried to Force Quit with the Cmd-Esc combo, but no avail. Soooo, I held down the power button and restarted. All seemed to be routine like after a kernel panic crash, but once I was rebooted I had an awful discovery. My iPod which had been mounted when the machine crashed, was no longer able to mount. It doesn't show up in iTunes, Disk Utility, on this Mac, any other Mac, or my PC. ALso, it will no longer shut off, so it stays on until the battery dies. I took it to a "genius" and was told it is broken and I should buy a new one (since it is out of warranty). I refuse to accept that it is "OK" to have an Apple iMac kill an Apple iPod. If anyone has any ideas as to how I might be able to restore this thing, let me know.

*Did you ever consider that possibly the reason your iMac froze was that your iPod died and hung the system?*
To add on to that, quite possibly, the iPod was trying to connect to the computer, and when the computer was turned off, it corrupted files on the iPod.
Kind of like unplugging an iPod (any one with a screen) when it says Do Not Disconnect.
Unfortunately since the Shuffle is out of warranty, it wouldn't be a free repair for the iPod, but the replacement isn't all that expensive ($49, I believe).

  • MS Windows Professional 2000, SP3 and IPOD Nano drivers

I've just received my new iPOD nano and trying to instal software on my laptop I found that it requests SP4 that I couldn't install on my laptop due to policy requirements.
Could I download any previous release or what can I do?I have Administration rights, too so do you advise me to instal SP 4?
Thanks a lot for your help,
    Ciao Matz

    Welcome to the forums.
Well, if your laptop is not yours, and your not supposed to install anything new on it, such as SP4, then I wouldn't advise you to break the rules.
If you have Admin rights, meaning you are allowed to do things, cause you are admin, then go ahead, cause the service packs are designed to make Windows run better. The service packs don't hurt, they help.
    Hope this helps!

  • IPod nano Software Download - Files are corrupt

Just purchased an iPod nano. Tried to install the software. When it reached the iTunes portion it flashed a message that "Some installation files are corrupt. Please download a fresh copy and retry the installation." I went to the website and did that. Results were the same. Ideas?

There is a simple solution to your problem:
    INSTALL WINAMP & PLUGIN
The plugin can be found here

They also have a Tutorial (which I did not need)

  • New Ipod Nano - won't update "not enough space" but its empty!!

My wife's iPod Nano is brand new (I have a Video iPod so iPods are not new to me!)
I get the message that the iPod cannot be updated because library is too big etc....
    What I did:
    I reinstalled iTunes.
Restored library and unticked all tracks.
Downloaded updater and restored iPod Nano.
Tried to update "only checked" tracks - didn't work. Restarted system - settings of "checked songs" were saved - got same message.
Tried unchecking this and doing "only sleceted playlists" with a playlist of 208MB (iPod Nano model is 1Gb) - still got same message.
Tried everything I can think of - still no joy
    Adam

Thanks for the suggestion but I am not using it as Firewire HD and I unchecked "enalbe disc use" anyway.#
Something is definitely not right somewhere - when I switch to manual management of tracks it works fine - its just a pain to do that all the time.
    Cheers

  • I have tried everything to get my new ipod nano to work with Windows 8.  Do I need to install new drivers or what?

Got a ipod nano for Christmas.  Installed already bought tunes on it with my computer at the time which was running Vista OS. Had to buy a new computer in March with Windows 8.  Did not buy any songs until April 29th or so...but they will not show in my ipod nano.  Talked with a tech and he got my songs into the new computer.  However, after we hung up, I tried to download the 2 new songs into my ipod and it would not do it.  I noticed that the "cloud" icon was not by any of the songs - only the word: downloaded.  I am thinking that since this is a 64 bit computer that I need to do something else, but don't know what.  Can you help me?  Thank you

So you have tried a different USB sync cable and as well as plugging it into all the USB ports on your system?  Did you try removing all other USB peripherals (excluding keyboard and mouse if necessary) to see if that did any good?
What happens if you connect it to another PC or Mac?

  • USB 1.1 on ipod nano 5G

Hi. I'm thinking about getting an ipod nano 5G for cmas and am wondering if my Dell Dimension 8100 with XPSP3 and usb 1.1 will let the ipod sync and charge. Does anyone know if usb 1.1 will suffice for both?

    Hello there,
According to the iPod's minimum requirements, which can be found in the document below, you need a USB 2.0 port in order to sync or charge your 4th generation iPod nano.

    Hope this helps.

  • Would you recommend iPod nano 7th generation?

I've got a iPad 2 and a iPhone 4. I'm thinking about getting a iPod nano 7th generation. I use iCloud but I know that the iPod nano doesn't have iCloud so I started syncing with iTunes. I do it about every 2 weeks. Would anyone recommend the iPod nano to me? I just want a very portable device that I can use to track my walks and listen to music and the radio. Who would recommend it to me? It looks really cool though.

An iPod Nano is portable, you can listen to music and the radio, you can even use Nike+iPod while you walk. However nobody here is going to recommend an iPod for you to purchase. Sorry friend we are here to help people fix issues with their devices and nothing more.

  • Cannot Play audiobooks on my iPod Nano

The Books icon no longer appears on my iPod Nano and I cannot play wma or mp3 audiobooks. The Fitness, Radio, Music, Clock, Photos, etc. icons are still visible. I have used this iPod for some time to listen to wma and mp3 audio books from my local library using Overdrive to download the audio books from the library and then transfer it to my iPod. That no longer works.  It is not a problem with the library or Overdrive. I can still download and transfer audio books  onto my old iphone 3 and listen to them. When I attach the iPod to the computer it shows up in itunes and under Devices shows my iPod with Music and Audio books, but the transferred audio books do not show up under music or Audio books in iTunes either. iTunes doesn't support wma files but it does support mp3 files. I can transfer library mp3 books to iTunes but then cannot move them to my iPod nano.I tried using Restore iPod in iTunes but when that it changed nothing.

I almost gave up on getting the problem solved and then there it was. I have windows 7 and you have Windows 8 and then maybe you have a newer version of the iP0d Nano. I don't understand their pre-this, post-that versions. I only use my iPod to listen to Library audiobooks. I think the libraries are getting away from using WMA files. Apple no longer supports wma files  so I've tried never to load any new updates although I guess I did by restoring it. I think my version is 1.0.2 rather than what you said you had.
I suggest you contact Overdrive Support. Try this email address since it is the one they used to communicate with me: [email protected]
I can't find the email address I used to originally contact support. It was one of those with a bunch of boxes to fill in and then a place to describe the problem. I have replied to their contact with me and asked to verify a support email address. When I get it I will pass it on to you.
I was looking for a player that didn't require iTunes to transfer files and that supported both WMA and MP3 files. WMA is outdated. Apple iPhone etc. no longer supports it. Neither does Android. They say there is an app that will allow playing WMA files but I haven't been able to get it to work. My iPod Nano now works again so I'll stick to it. MP3 audiobooks play as music on the iPhone and on Addroid if you can get it set up so it plays the book in the correct order.

  • IPod Nano content partly invisible in iTunes

My 2nd generation iPod Nano contains three albums (podcasts) but one of them doesn't show in iTunes. The two others do. I cannot delete this third album. Any ideas for solution?

    Howdy Leena-44,
I recommend this iPod nano (2nd generation) Troubleshooting Assistant found here http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/nano2gen/. It is very thorough and I am confident will resolve the issue you are seeing with the iPod Nano. The re install section I would save for last if needed but I dont think it will come to that. Here is the first section to get you started:
    Reset
To reset your iPod nano (2nd generation):
    1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
    2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
    Tip:
If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • What apps are built into the new iPod nano?
