  • I tunes error -42404 after installing update

Problem with itunes after update. Windows 7, 64 bit. Have uninstalled, deleted all apple files/folders etc. per other forums (several times with different error msgs). Finally got it to install-had to install Qiicktime separately but am getting following error msg and progrram doesn't work correctly and shuts down.
error msg "A required iTunes component is not installed. Please repair or reinstall iTunes (-42404). Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello spiketaz,
iTunes has various components bundled with it that it requires for general usage. I advise that we completely remove iTunes and all of these related components, verify that they have been removed, then reinstall. To do so, please follow the steps in this article:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923
Note: it is important to remove the 7 components in order. Uninstalling these components in a different order, or only uninstalling some of these components may have unintended affects.
If the above does not resolve your issue, I recommend we reset the SC Info folder:
iTunes repeatedly prompts to authorize computer to play iTunes Store purchases

(See Step 4: Remove the SC Info folder)
    Thanks,

Error (-42404) SOLUTION - for Vista
Uninstall everything Apple as per Apple Forum "http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923 for Vista". Be the administrator to ensure you have acces to folders and files which you may need to check.  This is the solution that worked for Vista, but I read the solution for Win 7 is almost identical.

    I get the following:
      (1) iTunes - The software required for communicating with iPods and mobile phones was not installed correctly. Do you want iTunes to try to repair this for you? Yes/No
      (2) iTunes - The software required for communicating with iPods and mobile phones could not be repaired. Please reinstall iTunes if you wish to use these devices. OK
      (3) iTunes error message - A required iTunes component is not installed. Please repair or reinstall iTunes. (-42404) OK
      (4) iTunes error message - We could not complete your iTunes Store request. A required iTunes component is not installed. Please repair or reinstall iTunes. (-42404) There is an error in the iTunes Store. Please try again later. OK
Okay, so I decided to uninstall and reinstall. Funny, iTunes can be found in a program folder, but it does not show up in the programs list. I tried to look for it using the command prompt ("wmic" --> "product get name") but iTunes is not there either. Doesn't even show up in the registry to try to uninstall.
I just want to "properly" uninstall and reinstall iTunes (plus the other usual suspects, Apple Software Update, Apple Mobile Device Support, Bonjour, & Apple Application Support). If anyone out there has any suggestions, please help! (I'm running Windows Vista -- don't judge/laugh) :-)

Okay, feeling like an idiot, but will share so others don't have to. I rebooted my computer and that enabled iTunes to reappear in the programs list. Don't appear to be having the same problems as before (no error messages now). Problem solved!

  • Itunes error -42404

Well, unlike a previous thread about this error code, my itunes will open and play song and music videos. The catch is that it will only play songs and videos that i purchased in the last 4 months or so. All movies and 90% of the songs after that will not play. Movies wont play period while songs pop up the authorize box and when i go to authorize it pops up the "Unable to authorize. iTunes is missing a required component Error -42404"
Now i recently had to archive and reinstall OSX 10.4 because a failed update corrupted many of my programs. Now everything else works fully except iTunes. And i have current itunes and quicktime.
    What do i do now??

    Hi,
Try downloading and reinstalling the latest version of iTunes from here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Can you download anything from the iTunes Store, like the Free Single of The Week?
If you can't download from or connect to the iTunes Store, try the general tips in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1368

  • Can't play Purchased Music getting error 42404

Have the newest iTunes and Quicktime. When Authorizing it gets error 42404 "We could not complete your iTunes Store request. A required iTunes component is not installed. Please repair or reinstall iTunes -42404."
I have uninstalled Quicktime and iTunes but same problem. I have deleted the registry. Still same problem.

i am ALSO having the same problem!! i got my hard drive replaced and had no idea that i was supposed to "deauthorize" before replacing a harddrive. apple definitely does NOT make that clear to its users until they have these kinds of problems! anyways, i had all my music copied onto cds and tehn put back onto my new hard drive, and now my computer wont play my purchased music only. my information says that there are zero computers authorized to play my music. i am also confused as to which email account i used to purchase this music- when i click on a purchased song to play it, it asks me for an email and password, so i have been trying both of my two accounts: when i use my school email account it says :"you have successfully authorized 2 out of ur 5 possible computers" but the songs still wont play. when i try my hotmail account it says "you have authorized all 5 possible accounts". ive tried deleting the scinfo file and i really have no idea what to do either, i just want to play my purchased music i hope someone can help all of us

  • Upgraded to Itunes 11.0.4.4x64 now I get error -42404

I upgraded to iTunes 11.0.4.4 and now I receive error -42404  (A required iTunes component is not installed).  I’ve removed and reinstalled iTunes several times and get the same result.  I’ve also tried using the install to repair the program and still get the same result.
After the install, there is not menu item, but there is a desktop icon.  How can I either fix this or downgrade to the previous version????
    Thank you

  • I have an error 42404 message.  I have uninstalled Itunes, quick time, etc, etc.  I then checked to make sure that all files had been deleted.  I have 2 files that haven't been deleted and are still not.  It will not allow me to delete them access denied.

I received an error 42404 message.  I have uninstalled itunes, quick time, etc, etc.  I then went to check that all the files had been deleted, however,
Program files\common files\Apple - will not delete - it says folder access denied
program files (x86)\common files\Apple - will note delete - it says require permission from SYSTEM to make changes to this folder.
How can I delete these 2 files so that I can reinstal Itunes?

You can uninstall the relevant extensions from Tools>Addons to remove those toolbars. Also there may be some unwanted plugins which you may want to disable. This should solve your problems.
If you still want a clean profile, uninstall firefox with the "Remove my Firefox personal data and customizations" checkbox enabled. Alternatively you may remove your firefox profile folder which (on Window7) is stored in C:\Users\<your-username>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles folder with a randomly name. You may delete this folder before installing a new version to get a clean profile.

  • Error 42404 after 10.5.3.3 upgrade

Has anyone got a fix for this or is it a software issue on iTunes part.  I have windows 7 64 bit and until yesterday when i did the upgrade i had no problems.  I have tried repair and uninstall and reinstall which i have done and i still get the message  " A required iTunes component is not installed. Please repair or reinstall iTunes (-42404)" it would suggest that there is something missing with the install of iTunes as iTunes worked fine up until i did the upgrade yesterday.  I have noticed a number of similiar issues here and on Google so many many people have this same problem after upgrading to 10.5.3.3

OMG!! I have fixed it ok guys here is the answer for all Windows 7 pplz upgrading to 10.5.3.3 who have the following errors:
    Error 7 Windows Error 5
    ItunesHelper didnt install
    Itunes didnt install
    mobilehelper didnt install
    error -42404
    Here is the fix:
Firstly thank you to Chris, Senior Advisor at Apple he doesnt know it yet but he set me to thinking and i can now say i have solved it. Before you start make sure you have completed the unistall sequence elsewhere on the forum.
Firstly go to the c:\program files (x86) then go to Common Files now here is the trick guys you may think you have got all of C drive to show all hidden files but you may not have so click Organise, Folder Seach options and Click and click View then ensure the Show all files is selected. Now you may notice you have an Apple folder which may not have been there when you did the uninstall of the sequence listed elsewhere on this board.
What the main issue here is if you installed iTunes but did not right click and choose install as an administrator then you will not be able to delete this folder I dont know if this is a Windows or Apple or both and why certain areas still don't show all files when you have this in C: i don't know either.
What you need to do is right click then choose properties then go to Security then to advanced then to Owner if it says Unknown in the box you need to click edit then choose an administrator listed then click ok, ok on the next box and ok all the way back.  Now double click on the folder and click ok to the next box and you are in and you can go back and delete this folder.  Now the bad news is you have to do this to every single folder in everything in the apple folder.  This is painful but you may know of software or a trick in windows that will reset every permission in every folder under apple but i did every single one myself.  Then download fresh iTunes and Quicktime.  Right Click Quicktime and run as administrator do the same with iTunes 10.5.3.3 and your done mine is now back up and running woohoooo. Side note i did empty the recycle bin and reboot before i did the reinstall.
    Cheers all

  • What is the proper way to reinstall iTunes after error 42404 without losing all my music?

What is the proper way to reinstall iTunes after error 42404 without losing all my music?

Here's what I do when I have iTunes problems and it works 9 out of 10 times.  I have Ccleaner; It's a wonderful tool to have.  If you don't have it, google it and install it, just the free version.  You'll see the list of all of your installed programs in there to unstall (among of a host of other things you could do with that program) but anyway, right click on Apple Software first to repair, when done then right click on Apple Application Support to repair, then when done with that, right click on iTunes to repair that and all should be well after that.  No uninstall should be necessary at all when you do all that.

That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?
