The typical fix if the progress bar totally freezes - meaning no movement at all for more than 20 minutes - and iTunes will no recognize the device - is to try to put the iPad into recovery mode. That is explained here.

However, don't jump the gun. Keep an eye on the progress bar and if it is moving at all - even very slowly - let it go for a while. I'm updating my iPod touch first and the progress bar is moving but very slowly.

I was updateing the software on my ipod through the wireless straight to the ipod and had to stop so held down both the power and the home buttons. Now the screen is frozen with the apple logo and the normal 'unfreeze' technique won't work. The computer does not recognise the ipod so will not charge or restore it. Is there anything that I can do myself?
Unplug it and let unit go dead. Then hold your Home button down and plug the USB power cord back in. iTunes should see it and then restore.

I would first try a reset of the device. To reset a device, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. You may need to attempt this multiple times.

The phone has been fully charged, software OS 8.1.1 lots of storage and fully operational. Any ideas.
I understand what you are trying to say, but the device is not fully operational, or you wouldn't be here. Does the device go to logo, then turn off, then go to logo again? If not, then you need to first try a reset. Hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. If that does not help, then restore from backup. If the restore from backup is not successful, then restore as new, not from a backup. If the restore from new is not successful, then make an appointment at the Genius Bar of the nearest Apple store or Authorized Apple Service provider, depending on your location and have the hardware checked. You might also want to take a look at this link and see if your iPhone 5 qualifies for the battery replacement program. https://www.apple.com/support/iphone5-battery/ Go to that site and enter your serial number. My Ipad is stuck with the apple logo after Ios8 install.
It wont turn off. It will reset by holding down the home and power button but only goes back to the apple logo again. Have tried plugging into Itunes

After updating to iOS 5.0.1 my iphone 4 is frozen on the screen with the apple logo and the progress bar under it. Held the power and home button, the phone shut off, and restarted the progress. If i try to turn the phone on, it keeps telling me to connect to iTunes. Once I do, it asks me to restore, i click restore, but it keeps on freezing at the screen. What is the problem? I can't turn it off, and when i connect it to itunes, it doesn't displayTry putting the iPad in restore mode and see if iTunes recognizes it. The steps are below:
