Hi Clarkett99,
To use an external hard drive for your iTunes library, see the steps in this article -
iTunes: Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1751
iPhoto can be used in a similar way, follow the steps in this previous discussion -
how do I save photos and their albums...: Apple Support Communities

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • HT201250 how do i add external hard drive to my time machine back up

how do i add external hard drive to my time machine back up so that I may view the files independently on apple tv please?

To elaborate on above.  I am looking to add about 300gig of photos on an external hard drive to TC.
Once I do this I believe I can then have itunes source its photos from TC without having them stored directly on my iMac?
Then I am assuming once I keep itunes on with home sharing I can stream these photos through Apple TV?
My inital problem is getting the photos onto TC in an individual folder not just a backup folder....is that possible or what would you suggest please?

  • My MacBook isn't charging and nothing's wrong with the

I recently was going to use the MacBook from like a week and when I put on the adapter says that " Not Charging " in the top right corner. Nothing is wrong with the adapter, it's just the MacBook. I already reset SMC and nothing happened. Can you help?

Go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info (and then System Report if you are running 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion), then select Power from the left hand column of the System Profiler. Copy and paste the Battery Information from the top of the page back here.

  • Complicated corrupted main drive and lost Time Machine back-ups question

Here's tough one I can't pin down answers to:  I have an iMac Early 2008 running Lion.  The main hard drive system (probably) corrupted over the course of 2-3 months until it became unusable.  I had Sophos on it, but removed it about a month ago and reliability improved but only for about a week.  Finally the hard drive crashed.  I used the Recovery partition while able to have Disk Utility add a second partition to my back-up drive, which contains Time Machine back-ups, my iPhoto folder and a few other files but no system.  I installed Snow Leopard from disk to the new partition, checked the first partition, which seemed fine, then upgraded the Snow Leopard partition to Lion and updated and ran under a temporary user.  Next I explored the main drive, which Disk Utility said was fine, but doesn't always show up.  While in Disk Utility, I noticed that the first partition on the back-up drive showed up as empty!  After some panicking, I've a second back-up drive on the way, but how do I access the TIme Machine back-ups, get my original user back and get access to over 15 years of files that are locked into that user?
My (2nd) back-up drive arrives tomorrow, so I'll able to get to work soon.
    Thanks for any help.

Ok so wahat you mean is I need to name a partition "Time machine" in order for TM to back up any volumes and TM will always start with the volume titled Timemachine ?
    so as I stated
    A. All my OS applications _________Rename this to time machine or can I ues the volume name it is now?
    B. All my files for those applications  ---------Once that is done TM will back this up?
    C. All My Itunes / Music etc---------Once that is done TM will back this u last?
Also I did a test run and I geet the error msg that the backup disk of my OS needs 1.36 TB but only 1.34 exists. The orignal  OS  disk has only 232GB of data why is tome machine asking for all that space?
I set the partition at 1.34 so there would be way more than enough space to copy.

  • I have a 250GB western digital external hard drive for my time machine backups. if i just want to backup and recover my photos and movies how do i do that with time machine?

I have a 250GB western digital external hard drive for my time machine backups. I did not download the software that came with the external HD. If I only want to backup my photos and movies from my Macbook how do I do that in Tme Machine with my external HD?

Format the HDD in Disk Utility>Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and the open System Preferences>Time Machine and set up the external disk as the Time Machine HDD.  Then look at the Options, and exclude what you do not want backed up.
    Ciao.

  • Can I use One Hard Drive for 2x Time Machine Back Ups and another partition for all my data?

    Hi Forum,
I am planning to but a RAID disc set up, but if i get a 2 disc set up, on one disc, can i have:
Time Machine back up for one Mac
Time Machine back up for 2nd Mac
Anothe partition for all my data.
then have that RAID'd to second disc?

    no one?
and if this set up was on one disc, and one partition for one TM was for the Mini that has this drive attached, would TM back up this whole drive 2x TM Partitions and 1x partitions with data on, ok? it wouldn't get confused by trying to back itself up

  • I want to use a nas drive for my time machine back ups.

    Hi,
I'm pretty new to macs. I've set up time machine on my kids macs using a time capsule without problems.
Ive now bought my own mac and want to use time machine to back it up but only have a network hard drive to do it on. When I go to choose disk, I'm not given the option of the drive. I can see it in finder ok.
    Is this possible?
    Thanks
    Roy

There's more to it than a "party line." Many folks who have started this, and thought it was going well, found it wasn't as reliable as they thought.
From a post in another forum (found by V.K.):
*The technical reason why Apple limits Time Machine to 10.5 AFP volumes appears to be to prevent disk image corruption. There were additional features added to AFP in 10.5 to support Time Machine. These presumably allow the disk image engine to force disk image journal data to write out all the way to the disk. Without such features, a network interruption can result in a corrupted filesystem on the disk image despite journaling. Remember, journaling relies on the journal being written all the way to disk before the changes take place. If you can't guarantee that (e.g., because of network/NAS buffering) then the journal is useless. Time Machine appears to rely heavily on disk journaling to deal with network drop-outs, interrupted backups, and the like. Take this away and your data is at risk.*
*If the NAS you are using supports these features it should report them to the OS and you should natively be able to choose that volume. If you have to trick the OS to use the volume it means the NAS does not support it.*
*To summarize: if you care about your backup data you should avoid using non-natively supported AFP servers.*
That only addresses Leopard, of course. Snow Leopard seems to have some additional requirements, that don't work with some NAS solutions that did work, to a degree, with Leopard.

  • Keynote exporting to powerpoint, won't give me an option to save

I have created a presentation in Keynote (6.2.2) and I am trying to export it to Powerpoint. I have the Keynote file saved, I click File-->Export to-->Powerpoint       -->next. Usually it gives me an option where to save the .pptx file, but now it will not. I have tried with several other files as well and all will not export with the same problem. Please help. Prior to this problem I have exported many presentations with no problems, and I don't think I changed any settings.

  • Hi. So my iphone (I'm pretty sure it's the 4 or something) isn't charging. Nothing is wrong with the cables, it's just the phone itself refuses to charge or something. What should I do?

Hi. my phone won't charge with any iphone cables and I would kinda like to know why.

Okay, but if I plug it into a new cable then it will charge, and then when I take it off and try to charge it again with the same cable then it won't charge again. .__.

  • ITunes recently decided my debit card's security code in invalid.  But nothing is wrong with the code or my card.  how do I fix this?  Apple support doesn't have a clue what they are doing and will not call me to fix this.

My bank sent me a new Debit card because of some security issue.  It has the same number as my previous card but new experation and new security code. It worked fine for months then all of a sudden Itunes decided the security code is invalid.  Now I can't even update my phone.
For the last week I have been going back and forth over email with apple support to fix it, but they keep telling me the same fix that doesn't work and frankly they are the worst support group I have ever worked with.  I can't even get anyone to answer a phone, its just back and forth by email everyday.

    Debit card? Are you sure?
USA iTunes Store does not appear to accept debit cards - http://www.apple.com/legal/itunes/us/terms.html  "The iTunes Store, Mac App Store, App Store, and iBookstore services (“Services”) accept these forms of payment: credit cards issued by U.S. banks, payments through your PayPal account, iTunes Cards, iTunes Store Gift Certificates, Content Codes, and Allowance Account balances."

  • How do I retrieve my iphoto library from the Time Machine back-up drive, when the original iphoto library was on a separate external hard drive that has crashed?

I recently backed up my iMAC and Simpletech external hard-drive to a 1 TB WD Passport  external hard drive, using Time Machine's back-up utility.  Today, I tried to access my iphoto library from the back-up drive, but received a message saying "the iPhoto library is a Time Machine back up, and so cannot be used as the main library.  Relaunch iPHoto with options key held down to choose another library."  Since my Simpletech died on me, what other iPhoto library is it expecting me to access?  I know approximately 169 GB were backed up, and my iPhoto library is roughly 54 GB.

Thanks.  I will try going through TM.  Since my Simpletech is on the way out, I'll be plugging in a new external hard drive (other than the back-up drive) and trying to restore the library to the new drive.  Any advice or warning if this is NOT the right thing to do?
Meanwhile, that is a great tip to do an alternate back-up using a different means.  It's been tough to figure out how to "preserve access" to digital images and files for posterity, knowing the hardware will always fail/obsolesce sooner or later, and that "clouds" are only as good as their consistent and reliable accessibility.  Upping the odds with redundancy will help dull the edge of my "access anxiety", though logically, it can never relieve it.  Will look into
    Carbon Copy Cloner.

  • How do I install my time machine back up on a new hard drive because the old one died?

Hi! My MacBook hard drive died, so I had a new one installed. Now, I am hoping I can transfer my Time Machine back up on it without having to do it manually. I was running Leopard on it. Can I boot from the Time Machine back up or will I have to install Leopard on it first? I'm not extremely computer savvy so , of course, I am looking for an easy way to do this! Thanks for any suggestions!

The Time Machine backup is not bootable
You will have to install Leopard first

  • Time Machine Back ups on an external hard drive

I have a western digital My Book Essentials 2Tbit external hard drive which is partitioned 1/2 formated for Mac 1/2 for PC. When the hard drive is directly connected to the Mac time machine and the backup work just fine. But once I connect the hard drive to my wireless hub (Netgear N600) Time Machine does not seem to want to use it for back ups.
I can find the drive and folders with the mac. In fact time machine can tell there is a back up on but it still seems to not want to use it for the backup.
Anyone know how to fix this?

Time Machine will no longer use NAS drives for backup (apart from AEBS) they must be connected directly.
You can 'hack' things to make them visible but at your own risk ... run Terminal and use the command
    defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1

  • FW800 GTech drive as Time Machine Back up - Leave on all the time?

My GTech Q FW800 external drive is my time machine back up - Can I leave this on all the time and boot up and power down my iMac or do I need to "Unmount" it all the time?
    Thanks,

You do not need to unmount the backup drive at all unless you wish to disconnect it
