I want to number each line on my spreadsheet

I'm trying to number each line on a spreadsheet, I thought I could put in a formula and copy down the column but that's not working. What am I doing wrong?
thank you,
Jackie

Hi Jackie,
One formula is
=ROW()
Another formula is (say you have typed 1 into A1) then in A2
=A1+1
and Fill Down.
Another way is to type the numbers of the first two rows, select both cells and drag the Fill Handle down. This won't work if you are trying to Fill Down from a Header Row. It works with Body Rows.

Ian.

  • How do you number each line in pages?

    I would like to number each line I a document t I am writing how is it done in pages

    Pages has no numbering facility as such. The work arounds are extremely clumsy.
    Try iText Pro and LibreOffice instead.

  • Two images on a page, want to number each image.  How?

    Page layout with two images on a page, other pages have one image.  I want to have a number associated with each image.  I tried page numbering to no avail.  How do I have a sequence number for each image?
    I further complicate this; I will make many documents, each document will have about five pages, as I progress, I want the photo numbers to function likek page numbers, across all the documents.
    How do I accomplish this?
    Rob

    Thank you, I am closer to the solution after following your instructions. On the Master pages (Two page spread), I made a text frame adjacent to each of two frames for the images (There will be two images on each document page, thus two frames on each Master Page).  They are threaded together and I verified this by View > Show Text Threads.
    Since I am not getting the right result, I must have done something wrong.  I made numbered List using Paragrach Styles.  I could not find "text attribubutes" so I am probably not doing this right.  Please note that I have spent 7 hours on this so far, so I am making an effort.
    It seems reasonable that this should be done on a Master layout, is this right?  So far, the text frame number flow from 1 to 4 across the the Master Page spread.  Thus the first two pages are correct.  However, when page is added based on the Master it repeats the same flow: 1 though 4.  I expect this because that's what the Master shows,  However, I want the numbers to continue as I add photos to additional pages.
    Thank you for any additional information you are willing to provide.

  • Number my lines

    In a detail table, i want to number my lines in creation order (first line created is number 1, next number 2, ...). I could use a sequence but :
    1. For each new master record, I need to restart counting from 1
    2. I don't want hole in my numbers. If I create 3 lines, the delete one and re-create one, I must have number 3 and not 4
    I tried something like SELECT COUNT(*)+1 FROM MY_TABLE in a PRE-INSERT trigger but the table is mutating so I cannot SELECT FROM it.
    Note : my wish is to use only tribber based on table (not forms trigger) and/or stored procedure/function.
    Any idea ?

    That really is odd.
    Still, what if you have a number column named insert_order.
    Then, in an after insert trigger for each row, you may do:
    select seq_ins.nextval
    into insert_order from dual;
    So, you may order the query results using the insert_order column.
    Then, you may say that you still want the record numbers, like 1, 2, 3, and not 201, 203, 204, 207, like they may appear.
    In this case, in your form you may have a display-item that will be filled with the neded values using the post-query trigger.

  • Using Numbers, I need to time-stamp each line in a table for when it was entered

    I need to time-stamp each line in a table for when it was entered.
    I have a formula which is
    "=IF(F18="","",NOW())"
    it gives me the answer I want, but every time I edit any data in the formula is recalculates the date/time to reflect the most recent edit. I do not want to do this. I am open to any and all solutions including using a script. I do not really know anything about scripts except that they are really easy to use once it's written.
    I have a formula i use in excel but it requires circular references in excel. I tried using this formula in numbers but I get the error that says I cannot reference a cell that references back to the cell i’m inputting the formula into (circular reference. It is easy to use in excel just by limiting the # of iterations in preferences. I can’t seem to find any such preference in numbers. Do you know of one? here is the formula:
    "=IF(D4=”",”",IF(B4=”",NOW(),B4))"
      I use it to time stamp each line in a spreadsheet. It is the only way to keep all the previous line from recalculating everytime I add a new line. If I can’t use this formula, do you know of a way to timestamp each line without having it update everytime I add a line or edit the form?
    Thanks in advance- I know this isn’t exaclty an easy question but I have honestly looked everywhere
    emely

    Hi Emely,
    Check the Insert menu:
    The highlighted item is slightly misnamed, requiring a bit more than a simple selection (or keypress combination*) to act as a time stamp.
    Simply choosing the menu item willproduce the result shown in A2: A time and date value is entered, but only the Date part is displayed.
    Setting the cell format to Date and Time, with both parts displayed (as I've done in column B) does show both parts of the Date and Time value, but as you can see, the time part is set to midnight, as it is in any cell where you have entered only the Date part of a Date and Time value. The date was entered here in the same manner as in A3.
    To enter both the current Date and current Time, the process has a few more steps:
    Select the cell
    Go Insert > Date & Time
    Before confirming the entry, double-click the cell (now showing the Date) to open this small dialogue:
    Click the pop-up menu under Choose Date format:
    Choose the last item in the list.
    Results as shown in A4 and B4 of the table above.
    Regards,
    Barry
    •Regarding the KB shortcut shown: The Mac OS lets you define a KB shortcut for any top-level menu item. The one in the menu is a user-defined keypress combination, made to be easily remembered, not to be physically convenient to use. If doing your own, you may want to try for something eassier to get your fingers on.

  • Given a multi-line string I want to append a string constant to the beginning of each line.

    Thankyou.

    You could just use "search and replace" with the search string being "\n" (in \codes display) and the replace string as "constant\n". (See attached image).
    If the string you want at the beginning of each line is variable (e.g. line number), you should use e.g. "pick line" or "scan strings for tokens" in a loop, then rebuild the new string.

  • Display  Purchase order, PO Item , Order Number ,entry sheet quantity ,entry sheet price ,invoice quantity, invoice price  against each line number

    hello all,
    i have an ALV report requirement like this,
    on the initial screen i have displayed(for a given agreement number like in ME33K )

    purchase document number        item number        short text        target quantity      net price
    5400000019                                  1                      xxx                  1.000                  304300.00
                                                        2                     xxxx                 1.000                  500000.00
    the above fields i have taken from EKPO table.....
    and on double clicking the  item number i have displayed
    line number          service number       short text           quantity    units    gross price   quantity released
    1                           swr10                   xxxx                 2.00          kg          500             2
    2                           swr11                    xxxx                5.00          EA         500             2
    the above fields i have taken from ESLL (esll-extrow, esll-srvpos, esll-ktext1 , esll-menge  etc......)
    this i have done by passing EBELN to ESLH and getting PACKNO and passed this PACKNO to ESLL.
    now my question is i need to display  Purchase order, PO Item , Order Number ,entry sheet quantity ,entry sheet price ,invoice quantity, invoice price
    against each line number above.....
    from which table do i need to take these fields.....
    please guide me....
    thankq....

    Thanks Andra,
    The problem is the multiple invoices is for non goods receipt item so there will be no delivery.At the time of creating a PO the GR is not checked so there will be no delivery .
    Also this setting is for invoices which are comming from Vendors.But if we are genrating the invoices manually it is not blocking those invoices.Also i there is nowhere mentioned in Incomming invoice to set tolerence for incomming invoice.Are you talking about Vendor tolerences?
    Thanks in advance

    Similarly, my requirement is :When I do the same kind of uploads, for each line item in an excel file each document number has to be generated or posted .This upload is using Tcode: F-02.
    How do I generate each document number for each line item (for each vendor or customer).
    Please do the needful.Either send me a sample code or an idea how to proceed.

  • I don't want a new row for each line of text

    I have exported a pdf document which is a table full of text in columns (by month). The conversion seems to react randomly so that in some places several lines of text in a column are converted to just one cell (great, just what I want) and then in others, a block of text gets split into a row for each line of text --- very annoying ...
    What would make this happen? Is there a workaround so that you can tell the conversion how to react to blocks of text?
    hope someone can help

    For optimal export the PDF needs to be a well-formed tagged PDF.
    The basic PDF page content has no format, styling, rows, columns,  etc.
    Just objects painted to the PDF page at a specified  location.
    You can return to the authoring file, clean that up to support accessible PDF output, then post process the PDF with Acrobat XI Pro to finalize making the PDF PDF/UA compliant. Export of that would be better.
    You can manually tag the PDF such that it is PDF/UA compliant than export from that . This would provide you better export.
    You can clean up the export you already have.
    Be well...

  • Count the number of lines in  each file in a directory

    Hello,
    I would like to count the number of lines for each file in my directory and subdirectories.
    I wonder how can I count the lines of the specified files?
    Here is the program which is listed the files in the specified directory:
                        String path = "C:/User/Studies/Pracices/src/Pract1";
           String files;
           File folder = new File(path);
           File[] listOfFiles = folder.listFiles();
           for (int i = 0; i < listOfFiles.length; i++)
            if (listOfFiles.isFile())
         files = listOfFiles[i].getName();
         System.out.println(files);

    Ok so one more question.
    Actually my path is pointing to one Directory and like here I can just read from one file that the name of the file should be specified in the path is it possible to help me in that part?
    File f = new File("C:/User/Studies/Practices/src/Pract1/");
    FileReader fr = new FileReader(f);

          String str = br.readLine();

    Hopefully some idiot manager isn't trying to use this sort of thing to base their decisions on developer productivity. If so, they ARE idiots. Number of code lines NEVER, EVER, EVER!!! translates into an efficient application. If I were paid by the line, my code would look like:
    select
    1
    from
    dual
    Based on the idiocy of this method of determining "performance" I would get paid $5.00 at $1.00/line. And trust me, I saw this back in the 80's and 90's and saw similar idiotic code and had to clean up the mess. Most of it wasn't efficient code to start with let alone the number of lines generated.Or the other extreme, when the PHB firmly believed that execution efficiency was gained by reducing the number of lines of code. So instead of nicely formatted, easy to read code:
          *GET NEXT ORDER NUMBER
                EXEC SQL
                     SELECT (MAX(ORDER_NUM) + 1)

                     FROM   PART_ORDER
                END-EXEC.
                IF IND-NULL < 0
                  MOVE 1 TO NEXT-NUM.
                EXEC SQL
                     INSERT
                     INTO    PART_ORDER
                            (ORDER_NUM,
                             ORIGIN_LOC,
                             ORDER_TYPE,
                             ORDER_STAT,
                             CREAT_TIME)
                     VALUES (:NEXT-NUM,
                             :LOC, 'R', 'O',
                             CURRENT TIMESTAMP)
                   END-EXEC.
                MOVE NEXT-NUM TO MASK0.
                PERFORM HEADER-PROC THRU HEADER-EXIT.
            CREATE-ORDER-EXIT. EXIT.                                                     You got this:
           *GET NEXT ORDER NUMBER
            EXEC SQL SELECT (MAX(ORDER_NUM) + 1) INTO :NEXT-NUM:IND-NULL FROM
            PART_ORDER END-EXEC. IF IND-NULL < 0 MOVE 1 TO NEXT-NUM. EXEC SQL INSERT
            INTO PART_ORDER (ORDER_NUM, ORIGIN_LOC, ORDER_TYPE, ORDER_STAT,
            CREAT_TIME) VALUES (:NEXT-NUM, :LOC, 'R', 'O', CURRENT TIMESTAMP)
            END-EXEC. MOVE NEXT-NUM TO MASK0. PERFORM HEADER-PROC THRU HEADER-EXIT.
            CREATE-ORDER-EXIT. EXIT.                 Oh, wait! See the same thing all the time in this forum ... not because someone thinks fewer lines = faster code, but simply because people are sloppy.
    INSERT INTO PART_ORDER(ORDER_NUM,ORIGIN_LOC,ORDER_TYPE,ORDER_STAT,CREAT_TIME) VALUES (:NEXT-NUM,:LOC, 'R', 'O',CURRENT TIMESTAMP) ;

    I want to change guide line color each of them. very difficult work. every same color. please

    It looks like you might be using CC, in which case CC 2014.2.2 has a very cool, New Guide layout panel
    If you are using CS6 (or CC for that matter) there is the excellent free GuideGuide extension panel.  Both would be helpful if you use a lot of guides.

    while printing from word appl. printer after each line puts in number of page, so I do not print 3 pages but 5 instead. What to do?

    What printer models is this intended for?  I assume it is aimed at the lower end inkjets, with the suggestion of loading 10-25 sheets of paper.
