I want to replace my main system drive:

Hi all:
I can't seem to find a clear answer on this:
I bought some new drives and would like to replace my main system drive with one of the new drives. It's a bigger drive, 1TB as opposed to 250Gb.
Is it true that I can use Disk Utility to re-image the main drive onto a new drive, then replace the previous system drive with the new mirrored drive?
Please advise. I've found nothing on the site to help me out other than a previous post that seems to indicate that I can do this. If you have details, please share them. Thank you!
-Pete

Either Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper will be more convenient.
You can, in fact, use Disk Utility for this without creating a disk image in between. You just need to go to the Restore tab and drag the current volume (from the sidebar) to Source and drag the new volume to Destination. Make sure you drag the volume (indented under the drive) and not the drive to the Source and Destination fields; this is a volume to volume operation. Check the +Erase destination+ box to make the copy exact. After double-checking that you did not reverse the source and destination , click on the Restore button.
The inconvenience is that you can't be booted from the volume you want to duplicate. So if that volume is your startup volume, you need to restart from the Mac OS X installation disc and run Disk Utility from the Installer's menu bar (or start up from another bootable volume).
The non-Apple cloning utilities use a different method for duplicating, and they can duplicate the startup drive.
Since you have a Power Mac G5, you can mount the new drive in the second internal bay. All the cables and screws are already in the case. There is no need to "replace" the existing drive, and there is no functional or operational difference between the first and second bays.

  • External Firewire as Main System Drive...

anyone have any comments on using an external Firewire drive as your main system drive? the stock 80GB internal drive in my mini is filling up at an incredible rate, actually had to offload my entire iTunes library just to clear some space, so i was thinking of using my 200GB Maxtor as my main system drive. any doing this? seeing any performance benefits and/or problems? thanks for any info.

from what I've heard from many articles re: MacMini before buying one for my GF, booting from an external FW drive (provided it's 7200+ RPM) you should notice a dramatic difference in performance.
place your install disc in the optical drive restart holding "C".
select the FW drive and use the Archive and Install option from your advanced tab before commiting to the install.
you keep your info on the drive and you get a faster machine!
if you decide to use the built-in drive to boot from make sure that you "re-bless" the internal drive from system preferences or you'll encounter an error screen the first time you try to boot with out the FW drive attached.
have fun with your faster mini!

  • Main System Drives keep failing in PPC G5 2.5 after installing backup drive

    Hello,
Two system drives have failed in my PPC G5 2.5 in the past eight months. One was a Seagate (original drive) and I can't remember the brand of the other one. At least the AHT says that they failed. Each time, this happened a month or so after I installed a backup drive in the remaining drive bay.
I'm wondering if the is just a coincidence or if maybe it's related to a power supply issue (or something else). Has anyone else experienced this problem?
Also to note is that the serial number on my G5 doesn't fall within the range of those covered by the extended repair program for bad power supplies.
    Thanks,
    David

    Hi Dennis,
When you formatted did you Zero the Partition?
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the Erase tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Highlight the drive, select Partition Tab, then Format type... MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Security Options button, choose Zero Out Data, Erase... after completion hopefully you'll be able to install.
after highlighting the drive, click on the Partition tab, Options button will be down below...
Boot off your Install Disk while holding down the *d key*, (not c key), then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Some disks require you to use the Option key at bootup to select AHT. Some models have a separate AHT CD.

  • Want to Replace TRANSTRACK (Legacy system) Functionalities into SAP

    Hi,
Currently client is using SAP R/3 as well as TRANSTRACK (Supplied by Transtrack International).
Currently Transtrack does the following things...
It receives the master route schedules from SAP and creates no. of daily schedules. It reads BAR code, which generated by SAP and stickled on the packing. It transfers the daily route and this bar code details to van driver hand held machines. It reads once again the Barcode details after delivery.
Can you please advise, by using which functionality of SAP we can replace this TRANSTRACK functionality entirely.
    Help need urgently.

    Dear Lakshmanan,

Transportation is an essential element in the logistics chain. It affects both incoming and outgoing goods. Effective transportation planning and processing ensure that shipments are dispatched without delay and arrive on schedule. Transportation costs play an essential role in the calculation of the price of a product. It is important to keep these transportation costs to a minimum so that the price of a product remains competitive. Efficient transportation planning and processing helps to keep these costs down.
As illustrated in the following graphic, you can use the SAP transportation functions to plan and process:
    · Incoming shipments in Materials Management based on purchase orders and shipping notifications
    · Outbound shipments in Sales and Distribution based on sales orders and deliveries
The transportation component includes basic transportation processing functions:
    · Transportation planning and shipment completion
    · Shipment costs calculation
    · Shipment costs settlement
    · Shipment costs calculation for individual customers
    · Billing of customer freight
    · Service agent selection
    · Management of means of transport and utilities
    · Follow-up and supervision of shipments
    · Management of shipment costs
These transportation functions can handle planning and processing for both inbound and outbound shipments. You can control and monitor the entire transportation process from the planning stage to goods issue at your shipping point (for outbound shipments) or vendor location (for inbound shipments), through to goods receipt at the customer location or your plant.

  • Best way to take songs on playlist from external drive to main system drive

    consolidate?

It will copy everything not in iTunes, into the into the iTunes folder into Artist/Album/ folders.
also will the library then reference the files on the drive rather than the previous location of external drive?
    Yes.
Anything you had in iTunes before you consolidate will get copied into the iTunes music folder location shown in iTunes prefs -> Advanced and iTune swill use that folder for everything.
The files on the external will not be used by iTunes.

  • I want to replace my Mac Pro, original Hard Drive but can not slide it out to replace.

I have copied my Original Hard drive and place a larger drive in a open slot in my Mac Pro, Now I want to take out the Original Drive, but the tray does not slide out.  Does any one know why? I got my Mac Pro June 2007.  It has two Optical drives and I have filled it with 3 internal Hard drives and 8 gig of memory. all this works and the new Hard drive works just fine, but now want to replace the Original Hard drive, and it will not slide out. any Help?

Make sure you set Startup Disk control panel to the drive you want.
Clone the drive to another drive and have a bootable backup.
    SuperDuper, etc to clone.
Repair the drive (from another drive or DVD) and repair permissions (maybe).
Disconnect externals just to rule out.
Ideal boot drive has just OS and applications.
    Limit login items.
Startup should be 30 seconds with WD Black 640GB and up.
Note: never mentioned what you planned to use, or how you cloned or setup the boot drive.
What matters is the drive is latest generation, probably 64MB cache (32MB also).
People use SSD 120GB or 10K 150-600GB WD VelociRaptor but most popular is WD Black 1TB probably.

  • How to replace system drive in Yoga 13?

When I purchased my Yoga 13 in January 2013, I also purchased a second SSD and added it to my system. Now I need even more storage (of course!). I'd really prefer to replace the original system drive if possible. I checked it out, though, and it came with EIGHT partitions, 2 of which are formatted and have drive letters. I'm assuming the others have important-but-not-readable-by-humans stuff (maybe recovery info) that should be kept as well.
If I temporarily put my new 512-GB SSD in the second slot (that was empty when the machine originally shipped), is there a way for my to copy EVERYTHING from the original drive over to it, make it a boot drive, and then move it into the first drive slot?

    Hi S,
If you have the newer unibody style, it's very easy. If it's one of the earlier models, it's considerably more difficult. Go to Apple Menu > About This Mac > More Info > Hardware and find your Model Identifier. Then go to ifixit.com, or powerbookmedic.com or macsales.com or youtube or others and there are illustrated, detailed directions. Good luck to you and post back if you have further questions.

  • How to create a new system drive

I have a 4.5 yr old G5 that I want to keep for awhile, but I think its time to replace the original system drive. The second drive is a bigger and more recent drive that I want to reformat and install the latest OS X on it, then move to the top position as the system drive. I was thinking I would leave drive 2 in place and do the reformat and system install before moving it up to the top - will that work? Isn't there some concern about "master and slave" positions (or drive 0 and drive 1) when it comes to system drives? Can I reformat and install onto drive 2 and then simply move it up to the top position to then function as the system drive? Any better procedure? (I'm planning to install a new, larger drive in the lower slot after I create and move the new system drive.)
    Thanks for any advice!

    Hi
No need at all to move drives around (and it can be a pain to do so in the G5s anyway) - just install your new drive in the empty slot, install the system, and use System Preferences - Startup Disk to make that the boot drive. Master/slave doesn't apply to SATA systems.

  • Moving main hard drive

I want to change my main hard drive (Startup disk) to another, larger internal drive. Can I just make a back-up clone with SuperDuper, copy that to the new drive, and then change the Startup Disk to that on in system preferences?

Also, if you can run diskwarrior on the drive to "clean it up" and run smoother.

  • Sudo chown + chmod on system drive?

    Hello,
Before I mess my system drive up I wanted to check if this is ok.
For various reasons I have created a new Account that I wish to migrate to. I log in ok and can change permissions but there seem to be files on various places that I keep having to set permissions for and wish to resolve this for the whole drive.
What I want is a way to set permissions on all non system files to add admin access as it appears it is not there for certain files
I found the below commands which worked on my media drive but am reluctant to run it on the system drive:
    sudo chflags 0 /Volumes/System
    sudo chown 0:80 /Volumes/System
    sudo chmod 775 /Volumes/System
    sudo chmod -N /Volumes/System
I think the one above should have the "R" in as below to do this recursivly ?
    sudo chmod -RN /Volumes/System
I don't want to mess up the system drive so I thought I should check if this is ok or not. I think some system files need to be read only so I need to know if this will render the drive useless(I do have a full backup).
I also see people recomend Batchmod but am again unsure if this will work or what settings to use?

    Thanks Niel,
I have read numorous posts from yourself and V.K. relating to locked secondary drives but nothing relating to system drives and fully expected that answer. can I bother you a bit more please?
Can I safly run those commands on some of these folders?
    system\users\olduseraccount
    System\library\application support
    System\library\audio
I think that would solve most issues there are hundreds of folders with presets from plugins that have installed with only my old account as read write not admins?
    Thanks again Niel

  • How to replace the virtual system as the real system in the TMS?

    Hi,
I have a standard 3 systems TMS, which is 1 development system (real system, transport domain) and 2 virtual system(QAS and PRD).
And now, I will install the QAS system and replace the virtual system as the real one, How can I do in TMS?
I should delete the old TMS and rebuild the TMS with 1 DEV, 1 QAS and 1 virtual PRD? or just replace the QAS as the real one? What the operation should I do in t-code:STMS?
    Many thanks.
    BR,
    Randy

    Hi,
    Do it as follows.
    1. Remove transport routes (i think it is not mandatory)
    2. Remove your Virtual system that you want to replace with physical system
    3. Include the Physical system into Domain and accept it from Domain Controller
    4. Configure the transport routes. You can see all the transports that were in the import queue of virtual system are now in the import queue of the Physical system that you added.
Only condition is, both Virtual System and Physical System should have same SID.
All the above will be done through STMS
    Thanks,
    Giri

  • My system drives locked up -- "custom" access can't be reset

My system crashed and it took be a day and a half to get it working again: Lion wouldn't reinstall from the DVD, from the internet or from the Lion USB stick I made.  Finally I pulled out all the drives and put in only a Lion drive I had set aside as a safety. This worked.
My main system drive and the Time Machine drive display a little lock icon and when I open Info, their permissions are all listed as "custom."  Worse, when I try to change them, I can't.
All my data is on those drives and Lion won't even let me open them to transfer files.
How do I change the permissions?

I've been wrestling for three days with being locked out of all drives except one. I've tried everything on the planet including variations on the following, with no success. I was stunned when these two simple commands, cut and pasted into terminal, worked. I repeat this from the archives since it took me ages to find it among all the other posts that were efforts to help. Frame this, bronze it, put it on the wall, worship at its feet. I'm not sure I'll ever be able to relax using my Macs again. V.K., you're a god. How about visit a bolt on Cupertino.

run the following terminal commands (copy and paste, please)
    sudo chflags 0 /volumes/*
    sudo chmod a+rx /volumes/*
you'll have to enter your admin password (which you won't see). that's normal. this should unlock your drives.

  • Want to replace System Drive

    Hi
    I have a Xserve running OS X Server v 10.5
Right now it has the 80GB apple drive module, and it is really full. I want to replace the module with a larger drive, probably the 160GB module. What would be the best way of swaping the drives?
I was thinking of maybe booting the server in target disk mode and using disk utility to create an image of the system drive, but I"m not to clear on how to "install" that image on the new drive.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    -ray

This is pretty easy - no need to mess with Target Disk Mode or disk images.
Just boot the system from the install DVD. Once the installer launches choose 'Terminal' from the Utilities menu and use the command-line tool asr to replicate your drive. Something along the lines of:
asr --source /Volumes/ORIGINAL_BOOT --target /Volumes/NEW_DRIVE --erase
This tells asr to copy /Volumes/ORIGINAL_BOOT to /Volumes/NEW_DRIVE after erasing NEW_DRIVE.
When complete, NEW_DRIVE will be a clone of ORIGINAL_BOOT. Once its done you should be able to select NEW_DRIVE as your boot drive and you're done.

Stick a new drive in a free bay.  Format it with Disk Utility.  And then use a backup utility like Carbon Copy Cloner to copy your current drive to the new drive essentially making them equivalent.  Then change Startup Disk system preferences to use the new drive and reboot (from your new drive) and continue on your merry way.
Keep the original as a backup.
