I want to store my music files on a NAS (which has an iTunes server built in), but I'm not sure how this will affect my iPhone sync. Will I need a local copy of my music on a computer in order to continue to sync?

I have an iPhone and I sync playlists to it from iTunes. (I have far in excess of 16GB of music/podcasts.)
What I want to do is permanently share my music library with all devices in the house, so I'm planning on buying a NAS server that has a built-in iTunes server. (I don't want to just use my computer to share and leave it on 24/7 because that is a phenominal waste of power.) That way all networked computers can just load the library under the 'SHARED' option in the left pane. However, this had me wondering about how I will continue to sync my music to my iPhone? I wondered if I will need to maintain a duplicate of the library on one of my computers, and then have my iPhone sync with that. Otherwise I'm not sure how it'll work.
Any help/comments/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Incidentally, my first thought was to map a network share from the NAS to my computer, so that my music files appear on the Z: drive, say on my computer. I could then set up iTunes to store music etc in that folder, and to copy all new items to that folder. However, if I do that, all that'll happen is that on my NAS, the library file will become out of date as I add music to the collection but not to the index.

emails in my 'trash' are being deleted after about 5 weeks, but I want to retain them. I have selected 'never' on the 'permanently erase deleted messages' option, so I'm not sure why this happening? any ideas?
iCloud emails in the Trash are deleted after 30 days on the website, and this over-rides the 'never' setting in Mail. There is no way of stopping this. (The Trash isn't really intended as a permanent storage area.)
Try this workaround. Go to http://www.icloud.com and go to the Mail page. In the sidebar, click on '+' to the right of 'Folders' to create a new folder; give it a suitable name.
Now click on the cogwheel icon at bottom left. At the bottom of the pane which opens, set the 'Move deleted messages to' drop-down menu to your new folder.
I'm not sure whether, when you delete messages in the Mail application, they will go to the Trash or your new folder - you'll need to experiment. I have a nasty feeling that Mail will simply move them to the Trash as before. If this is the case you will have to move them to your new folder manually - dragging messages directly to this folder rather than hitting the delete key will be the easiest way. -

I am trying to sync my ipod and the new itunes library I just loaded. My old computer basicall crashed and I had to get a new one. They were able to recover all the data from my old computer, but there is no music listed in the new itunes library. How do I get this to work as it did on the old computer?

Still not sure how to share files with my friend's Windows PC?
I went through all the help pages concerning this, but it doesn't seem to help any. On our house internet connection, both our computers use the same IP address. I tried connecting directly to his computer using ethernet cable, but his computer never showed up. Our workgroup name should be the same, his is WORKGROUP but I'm not sure how to officially make mine that. I went to Network in System Preferences and clicked on Advanced... then went to the WINS tab and it has workgroup in the workgroup box, does this mean my computer is using that workgroup name? I'm at a loss and would like to share files with my friend's computer.

Do you have a router?
If not then sharing files will not be easy.

The add the Mac to the WORKGROUP
Applications > Utilities > Directory Access
Select SMB/CIFS
Click Configure
Change Workgroup to match the Windows Workgroup. -
I would like to store my music files on a external harddrive when using itunes instead of my internal drive but can't seem to configure the computer to do this. can someone tell me how ? .
Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder to teh external.
Hold Option and launch iTunes.
select Choose library... and select the iTunes folder on the external.
Make sure the external is connected and ready before launching iTunes. -
New iMac. Flash drive is primary for OS and apps. I want to use my HD 2 (1 TB hard drive) for my bulky photo and music files. Can I direct iPhoto and iTunes to use the larger hard drive as the primary target when importing?
Yes. Unfortunately, I don't know the specifics because I don't use iPhoto anymore and I completely copied over 15 years of MP3 files recently when I installed 10.7. Needless to say, I have not opened iTunes since and probably never will again - not because of iTunes but because of my stupidity. I did have some of the files backed up but I hadn't backed up in a while.......anyway....
When I imported my CD's, I had them go directly to my external firewire. I can't remember exactly how to set it, but in the preference section of iTunes you can specify an import destination to any drive that's available to your machine. I did this with iPhoto as well way back at one point when I was using Tiger, but I don't remember the specifics on that either. I can't imagine they would have discontinued support for that feature since then.

Thank you for any help I appreciate it. Apple products came highly recomended to me, and I have been largely happy with my i phone, i pod, i pad mini and macbook. I admit I tunes always confused me, it is so hard to copy things back and forth from computer to device or vice versa. Most importantly my partner has given me a set of CD with audio books, legitimate CD's not burned copies, and I wish to play them on my i pod touch. I have donethis before with CD''s, however now I look i see all the songs and audio books from CD's have been removed from my device after synch with my itunes on my macbook??? and I can no longer cooy the new CDs on to there? i try put them in the library, and they show up but they are not in black printing like the other songs, they are a faded grey color. They play on the mac book in itunes, so i know they are THERE, they just wont go on my device??? What am I doing wrong and why did all my other ones turn to grey gaded text and go off my i pod.
Furthermore, i thank anyone who takes time to help me, it isnt your job, it is apple's job, but they want me to pay forty bucks for the priviledge of contacting them for help because my warranty expired !! They obviously did something with a new update of their i tunes, there should be NO DIFFICULTY copying audio books i legally own the CD for onto my i pod, why is it so impossible? I have asked my father, my brother, my flat mate, no one can work it out, so its not just that im an idiot.
People warned me that apple does things like this, makes stupid programs like i tunes, that make nothing but trouble so you have to pay to ask for help, and make it so you have to buy everything from their library not on CD. I woudl buy from them if they had the audio books and songs I wished to purchase but they don't always have what i want. And if they did why shoudl i pay AGAIN when i paid for the CD already , i paid for the I pod, i legally own them both so why can i not put my own music on there??? I am a loyal apple customer, All my devices are apple and until now i have been happy and willing to pay more for a good product. But i tunes is ridiculous! It's already synched things i didnt want synched and deleted things i didn twant deleted, and thats fine i told myself maybe im too dumb and dont get it. buT i've been trying all week and asked other peopel and still cant get this simple task done, and after purchasing their devices and recommending them to my friends, its a slap in the face to say they wont even let me ask a support question without paying forty bucks! A very unhappy customer-- not just that i cant pplay my music and audio books, but that i cant even contact anyone for help without paying after i purcahsed four different products off them in the two years!The sort fields should generally be empty unless you've putting in custom values to sort solo artists by their surnames. You can apply common changes to thousands of tracks at once, just don't apply the wrong change because there is no undo.
It is a good idea to backup before undertaking large scale changes. See this backup tip for a suggested approach.

How can I import music files from a flash drive to my iTunes library? I put the flash drive into my laptop, selected " add file to library", selected the songs I wanted from the flash drive, and it looked like they were added as the names show under " recently added". Then I removed the flash drive from my laptop But when I select one of the songs and try to play it a message saying "the song could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" So it seems the actual files did not transfer. What do I do? I have done this. With a cd in the past with nsomproble,.

Dragging the files to "Automatically Add..." is pretty easy once you know where to look. Just make sure iTunes is running when you do it; otherwise the files will just sit there until the next time you open iTunes.
(Interestingly, the way you originally tried to do would have worked fine except for one little detail: you have to first go into Edit > Preferences > Advanced, and check the box for "Copy files..." If that is not done, iTunes will reference the files on the flash drive, which of course are not accessible once the drive is removed, as you saw.)

I have a Mac Book Pro with 10.6.8 and want to back up my files using a flash drive. It says I did it but when I tried to check on my other Mac - an I Mac with 10.5.8, thedata does not seem to be there. I cant see photos, etc.. It shows the backup as a file and shows various system info. but there are no photos or other files shown.

MikeA PowerPC Mac, if that's what it is, won't be able to see an Intel Mac's formatted data. Also ExFat formatting is not supported by 10.6.3 or earlier. I would try viewing the backup on another Intel Mac with at least 10.6.4. If it isn't there, then the backup never really took place. I much profer a hard drive with Carbon Copy Cloner.

Step 4: I did this to backup the music already on my computer, but it didn't work. Is there any way to recover it now that I have copied my new music?
A better way is to select the photos in iPhoto and export to a desk top folder, right click on it and burn to disk

I am looking to turn my iPad into a portable device to store and view multiple files transferred from my pc. I have tried some apps but it does not support multiple sub folder transfers. Any suggestions please?
I use GoodReader on my iPad and use the GoodReaderUSB tool. the GoodReaderUSB tool allows you to transfer entire folders into GoodReader without loosing the folder/file structure.

Once a track is in your iTunes library, you should not touch it except through iTunes. But I guess you know that now.
iTunes, to answer your question, cannot "refresh." If you re-add those files to your library, iTunes is unable to match them with the existing library entries, and will create a bunch of duplicate entries. This is a longstanding shortcoming of iTunes (and the source of lots of traffic on this fourm).
If there are "too many to manually" reassociate, then starting over, in the sense of deleting and then re-adding, may be a good plan.
