Does anyone else think that the AppleMac group of products are marketed in a greedy way? I have MacBook Pro 10.5.8 with Leopard and am now told that I have to upgrade to Snow Leopard so that my system can download the relevant iTunes upgrade to sync my new iPad and get my audiobooks (which don't appear anywhere on the device right now). Of course there isn't enough memory on the MacBook and Snow Leopard costs more also? I don't have financial resources to pay for all the new memory requirement and related upgrades they say I need just to sync my iPad with my purchases.
Thanks for the reply but I already knew this. $20 for Snow Leopard which asks for 5gb free memory. I can only see that I have 4 gb (which I feel is rather a pathetic amount of available memory for any computer). To upgrade this computer's memory will cost another fee (I haven't researched this yet but gather it's more than $20). Then of course I could also be told that the OSX Mackbook Pro that I have can't be memory upgraded - which means I'm being told to buy a new computer - hence my very frustrated last email. I have been given a lovely iPad 2 as a present and now can't sync at all with anything because of this ongoing upgrade nightmare. How on earth am I going to be able to sync my movies, audiobooks etc to this new device??

Just make sure you Sync ALL your important Info... Contacts... Music... Etc... to your Computer...
and then do a Restore as New...
i was a bit reluctant at First, because I hadn't done it before... But it was So Easy and am Really Glad I did...

Leopard to Snow Leopard can i use a large flash drive to backup first?
I've been using Leopard for 4 years with no problems.
Since Google decided to stop support for Leopard, and I use Chrome a lot I decided to upgrade. I won't be upgrading to Mountain Lion right right away. I ordered my Snow Leopard disks from Apple.
I understand that I need to backup. I want to backup with Time Machine before I upgrade the OS, but I don't have $75+ right now to purchase an external hard drive for this purpose only.
Can I use a large Flash Drive to run Time Machine? Like a 32 GB? I know that flash drives have a limited number of writes on them and can go bad, so I am thinking I could just use it this one time to make sure I have a clean backup. If this is possible, then can I set up Time Machine again later when I have an external drive?
Also, I have 2 cores on my Mac, but I have no idea how to use the 2nd core.
I'm also not sure if I need to purchase a specific external drive because I have a mac.
Thanks for the help.If you only need to make a full backup prior to upgrading, I would suggest using SuperDuper, which for creating a full, bootable clone is free. (It is not free when you start needing to make incremental backups, but you won't be doing that, at least not right now.) For a bootable clone, you only need a Flash drive (or external drive) as big as the total size of the utilized space on your hard drive right now, not as big as whatever the entire drive size is.
In the past, I would have recommended Carbon Copy Cloner for this, but it's no longer free or donation-ware and you don't have the budget for both that and some kind of external or Flash drive.

You might also want to look around newegg.com for inexpensive USB external drives, or even large enough Flash drives. You'll probably find a much less expensive external hard drive than a Flash drive for this purpose.
You do not need to use Time Machine, but even if you did you could just make one full backup to a Flash or external drive and then unmount and disconnect it. An external for TM only needs to be so large because it's constantly taking snapshots of your drive and those add up. But you won't be using it that way.
Anyway, I think you're much better off with a bootable clone, should you need to restore that.
Don't worry about having 2 cores; that's nothing to do with backing up. -

To get the CD to eject, hold down the mouse, or if you use it, trackpad, button while you reboot ... keep holding the button down until it ejects. If that doesn't work, this Apple note has some other steps.

Your iMac needs to be mid-2007 or newer with 2GB minimum memory (4GB+ is recommended) and 8GB or more of available disk space. You also should be at OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard to access the App store and install OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. -
Snow Leopard: can't use Adobe PDF printer through Distiller
I am on Quark 8.1.6.2 and Snow Leopard (10.6.4) and use Acrobat Pro 9.4.
To make a PDF file I am always used to going through the Quark print dialogue boxes, selecting Adobe PDF as the printer, setting up sizes, settings etc, saving to a .ps file then using Adobe Acrobat Pro (9.4) Distiller to make a high res PDF for press. Worked fine, before I got Snow Leopard.
I have now read that Adobe PDF Printer is not available on Snow Leopard and that all applications that used Adobe PDF Printer to print pdfs will not be able to print pdfs.

In the print dialogue box it no longer allows me to set up custom page sizes for a .ps file.
How do I now print to high res for print PDF (through a .ps file for Distiller). ie, I don't want to export to PDF through the Quark print dialogue, as it makes too big a file, that's why I need to go through Distiller first. Help!PDF/X-3 is the best choice to use in those provided by Quark. You can read up on the PDF/X format here. For correct use, version 3 requires all fonts used to be embedded (which the Quark function does automatically). Version 3 also requires all images to be CMYK or spot color. That doesn't mean you can't use it for RGB, though. PDF/X-3 also allows calibrated RGB images and CIELAB.
I assume for pre-press output I should use ''Press - high quality/high resolution', but then Acrobat Distiller asks for settings too...
You don't go through Acrobat Pro or the Distiller at all when outputting a PDF from Quark. The function is built in. There are nice, short descriptions of the various PDF choices here.
When you select a style, the defaults are automatically applied. You will get center and trim marks and whatever else is in the default settings. After you have selected the PDF version you want to use, then click on the Options button. Turn off marks, downsampling of images, or whatever else you want to change. Click the Capture Settings button and Quark will then automatically use your last settings as the method to create PDF files. When clicking the option to capture, you'll be thrown back to the document the first time, so you'll have to go to the menu to choose Layout as PDF again. But you'll see the choice is on Captured Settings. So until you change it, all you have to do is choose a location and click Save. -

I have a .Mac account. My mother has a AIM account and a working USB camera. I can communicate no problem when using iChat on my MacBook Pro, but cannot see myself when using iChat on my iMac, same .Mac account. Any explanations for that?
Are you trying to talk to yourself or is this to your Mother ?
The first will not work with the same Screen name. (it will in Bonjour if the two Macs have different IDs in the Address Books)
If it is to your mother then how are the ports iChat needs opened in the routing device ?
If it using Port Forwarding then only one computer will work.

This is not a virus. Sounds like there's an Apple remote being used in the vicinity of the computer, and it's picking up the signal. If you have an Apple TV, note that the Apple TV remote can also control your MacBook Pro in the manner you describe.
I had a similar situation myself... turned out to be my 2-year-old playing with my Apple remote. -
Will iMac running Snow Leopard support an iPad2 running io8?
I have been using a USB cable to sync my wife's iPhone5 and my iPad2 with my iMac running Snow Leopard. (It's a 1st gen Intel iMac and I can't go any farther with OSX versions.) Until this week, I have never had a problem syncing our devices with the iMac. However, when I went to hook up the iPad, it forced me to download a software update for ios7. Looked like everything was fine, though slow in downloading, when I got received an error message (unknown error) that crashed the iPad.
MY only option at that point was to perform a Restore and Update from the backup on my iMac, which I did. However, the update forced ios8 onto my iPad and wiped out all downloaded photos, music, apps and books. When I go to sync the iPad, all of the settings on iTunes look correct, but the sync button is greyed out and I am not able to download any of the aforementioned files from the iMac to my iPad.
Help! Is there something I can do to fix this without having to schlep into an Apple Store, where I will be made to feel technologically stupid and inferior by a Genius? Or is the problem that my iMac running Snow Leopard can no longer support the devices running iOs8?You could've backed up your iPad prior to the "forced" upgrade which, by the way, you could have cancelled. iTunes doesn't upgrade your iPad, automatically, on its own. You had to click the Upgrade button to initiate the upgrade. You didn't have to do anything with that button. You can just leave it be.
iOS 8 is garbage on iPad 2 and 3 and even though iTunes keeps giving me the Update button option, I continually choose to ignore it.
Ignoring the Upgrade/Update button doesn't affect the normal iTunes/iDevice syncing/backing up operations.
You could've just left that button alone.
When was the last time you backed up your iPad?
While there is no way way to revert to a previous iOS version once you upgrade your iDevices iOS, iTunes saves multiple backups of your iDevice and if you backed up your iPad previously to this latest activity, you should be able to restore your iPad from an older backup that should appear by date when you plug your iDevice into your Mac, was for iTunes to launch and sync your iPad, then cancel the backup in progress and use the Restore function in iTunes to restore your iDevice from another previous backup version date.
If your current version of iTunes doesn't recognize your iPad2 under iOS 8, you need to check the iTunes update feature, in iTunes or in OS X Software Update feature in OS X Preferences panel to see if there is a iTunes update available for OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. -

Open the Connection Doctor from the Window menu.
Click Show Details and Check Again.
What errors does it post trying to connect to your email provider.
I dont' think there is any personal information in the output, but you might want to sanitize the output in a text editor before posting the output here in case there is a login user name or something like that. -
