I want to upgrade my Mac 10.8.5. How do I do this. I live in the UK.

    10.8.5 is Mountain Lion.
You can now upgrade to Mavericks OS 10.9 for free IF you have one of the following Macs, with not less than 2GB of RAM, and at least 8GB of available space on your hard drive:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    iCloud system requirements:

If you cannot run Mavericks you can purchase the code to use to download Lion from the App Store (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard):

my cd/dvd drive isn't working and i want to upgrade my mac os x10.5.8, how can i upgrade without the software CD

I think not.   You will need to order a disc from Apple quoting your serial number, as many of these discs are machine specific.   So unless you can get your drive working I think you will have to take a trip to an Apple store.
Indeed, you have an old computer that may not be worth the cost of repair ... but it is still worth seeking Apple advice and a visual inspection.   It just might be something not too drastic.

    Forget the Pendrive stategy...
Before attempting any Major Upgrade... get yourself an External Hard Drive... and create a Bootable Clone Backup of your current Hard Drive...
By far the easiest way to make such a Backup, is to use something like
    SuperDuper  http://www.shirt-pocket.com/
    or CCC  http://www.bombich.com/
That way, should anything untoward happen during the Upgrade,
    you will NOT LOSE ANYTHING.
(Get an EHD that is at least equal to your current Drive...)
Also, Check here for compatibility of 3rd party Software you may be using...
    http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
You should also consider more RAM... Get the Maximum you can for your Mac...
It is important to get the Correct and Matching RAM

  • I have a mac os 10.5.8, i want to upgrade to mac os snow leopard, can i keep all my files (documents, music on itunes) without backing up all the files first on a external device prior to the upgrade?

I have a mac os 10.5.8, i want to upgrade to mac os snow leopard, can i keep all my files (documents, music on itunes) without backing up all the files first on a external device prior to the upgrade?

I strongly advise against upgrading the OS without first making a backup. Were something to go wrong you would lose all your files without the backup. See:
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
    E. If updating:
    Download and install update(s)
    Use Software Update, or
    Download standalone updater(s).

  • Want to upgrade from Mac OS X 10.6.8 to Mac OS X 10.7 , where do i find 10.7?

want to upgrade from Mac OS X 10.6.8 to Mac OS X 10.7 , where do i find 10.7?

    You have to call Apple.
    1-800-692-7753
Apple will send you a code via e-mail. That can be used to download OS X Lion 10.7.
    Best.

  • I want to upgrade to Mac OS 10.8 Mountain Lion?

If I upgrade to Mac OS 10.8 Montain Lion will Photoshop Elements  10 and Premeir elements 10 still work properly.  The Tech spec only mention to OS 10.7

We are not aware of any conflicts with Mac OS 10.8. It should be safe to run the applications. However, if you are installing the Mac OS update over your existing version of Mac OS, I would suggest recreating the preference settings files for Elements as we have seen issues in the past with permissions. These files are stored in //Users/[User Name]/Library/Preferences/. Look for the files with the same name as the applications and delete them. This can be done before or after you install the Mac OS update.

  • Want to upgrade my Mac Mini Server OS

I have a Mac Mini with OS 10.6.8, and was wanting to upgrade the OS to a newer version. I'm a bit confused on which version to buy. The Apple App Store has OSX Server for $19.99, but this looks like an add-on for existing mountain lion users. Am I wrong on this, or is there another version of server operating system somewhere out there?
Also, do I have to use a server OS in this model of Mac Mini, or could I just switch to a stand-alone version of OS 10.8? My model has 2.66 GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, dual 500 GB HD's. I don't really use this unit as a server at all, and have almost all of the server features disabled anyway.

You can do everything you like.
If you want to upgrade to OS X Server you will have a stand alone version of Mountain Lion at some point during that process, in order to get OS X Server you need to install Mountain Lion first and thus your server will be a non-server.

But i want to upgrade it

You get Mac OS X 10.6 on DVD; Apple may send you that for free, and then run the 10.6.8 combo updater.

  • I want to upgrade my Mac Pro video card. I am using a mac quad core 2.7 GHz 8 megs of ram and an ATI Radeon 3870. Where do I start?

I am using a mac pro with a 2.7 GHz processor 8 gigs of ram and a Radeon HD 3870 video card with 512 megs of vram.
I want to upgrade to 1 gig of vram if possible.
Can anyone tell me where I can begin looking, what brand to buy, and what options I have?
I want to be able to use the Element 3D plug in After Effects.
Also, would I need to upgrade my operating system?
    Thanks,
    Faucheux

Shop for them at the Apple Online Store. I would suggest the ATI 5770 or 5870 or one of the new Nvidia GTX models - 650 Ti, 660, or 680.
Note that unless your Mac Pro has PCIe 2.0 slots you should stick with the ATI 5770.

  • HT3258 Want to upgrade my Mac OS X 10.6.8 to OS X 10.7 or higher

    Hello,
I have MacBook 3.1 and I am running OS X 10.6.8. My machine configuration is
    -- Core 2 duo
    -- 2.5 GB RAM
    -- 160 GB HDD
I want to upgrade my machine OS to 10.7 or higher but when I try to upgrade from App Store they told me my computer is not compatible for this OS. Can anyone guide me what I have to do for this?
    Thanks,
    Anvesh

You have to call Apple to purchase Lion > http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57 They will give you a code that you must insert into App Store to download Lion. Make a Time Machine backup and/or a clone with Carbon Copy Cloner before upgrading. Check if your applications are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com

  • Can I upgrade from Mac OS X Server 10.6.8 to Lion?

I am currenty running a Mac mini with Mac OS X Server 10.6.8 and would like to upgrade to plain Lion OS X, can I do this or will their be problems going from a server OS to the normal OS?

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, click on More Info, and check the model identifier against the following, which are the earliest Macs of each type that can run Mountain Lion:
    iMac7,1
    MacBook5,1
    MacBookPro3,1
    MacBookAir2,1
    Macmini3,1
    MacPro3,1
    Xserve3,1
If your system's compatible, buy it from the Mac App Store. A computer incapable of running Mountain Lion which has a Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) or better CPU and at least 2GB of RAM can run Lion 10.7, which is available by phoning the online Apple Store and ordering a download code for it.

  • I have a mac os x 10.5.8 but I want to upgrade my mac to 10.6 but in the software update it doesn't show it

i need help please post some answers

I really don't need to say more than what Niell has stated but just to explain it a little further, Snow Leopard is a new Mac OS for your Mac - not a software update from Leopard 10.5.8. That is why you will not see it as an update. It is an upgrade.
Software update does exactly that - it searches and finds updates for the software on your Mac. It will not find new software upgrade for you.

  • I don't want to upgrade to Mac OS 10.5 or 10.6

so do I have to stop using Firefox? How do I stop the annoying pop up telling me to upgrade Firefox when the new version is not compatible with Mac OS 10.4? I object to being forced to upgrade my system to suit Firefox. I'll simply stop using Firefox and go to Chrome or some other browser.
As above, I've got better things to do and spend my money on than upgrading my OS which works perfectly well.

Firefox 3.6.20 is the last version of Firefox for 10.4 and PPC Macs, you can upgrade that far.
