I was updating my iphone 3gs and when i came back to check on it, all i had on the screen was a usb and itunes logo. error -1. now my phone won't work. what do i do?

I have a iphone 3gs and while trying to update tot the new software my phone gave error -1 and went to usb and itunes logo page and says it is in recovery mode. I have tried to get it out of this mode but have had no luck. My iphone is not jailbroken, so i don't know why this is happening.

The device is in recovery mode. Connect it to iTunes and the computer and you need to restore it.

Now my phone keeps shutting down and when it opens, it only shows the apple sign and then a wire as if telling me to connect to iTunes. My phone has been like that for almost two days now. I went to 3 apple stores near me, the apple experts werent there. & then i went to a shop & the man there asked for 160 LE for updating a software on my phone :/. Why should i pay when it's honestly apple's fault that they didnt say that this update was for only iphones 5 or whatever, why do i even get the update on my iphone 4s when there's clearly no escpae from this "Recovery Mode" and no help from anyone?

Turn your phone off and connect your cable to the computer, but not the device just yet. Start up iTunes. Now, hold down the home button on your phone and plug it in to the cable - don't let go of the button until iTunes tells you it's detected a phone in recovery mode. Now you can restore to factory settings.

If the screen shows a plug going to itunes, then you have no choice, It's in recovery mode. You'll be given the chance to restore from a backup either from itunes or icloud.
I assume when you got the message to update (was this for the ios or update some apps?), that was before the device when dead. At any rate, doing a restore does not change the ios.

edit the hosts file on your computer and remove any lines that contain gs.apple.com. Disable your antivirus and firewall.

When I go into the sync options it say I have another user account and asks me if I want to merge of replace. I'm assuming it's trying to tell me I have an older iTunes Library, but don't know that. Geez, maybe people over 60 shouldn't have iPhones, iTunes just bafles me.
