I would like some info on external hard-drives. :)

Hi there.
Now before I arrive to my question I would like to point out that I am (basically) clueless when it comes to computer hardware and that kinda stuff, so don´t make fun. I would also like to say (reluctantly admit) that I am currently using an acer aspire computer with the worst keyboard imaginable; I have to crush the keys for them to be activated, so pardon me if some letters are missing. As an example I will type this message: 'Happy new year! Hope you have a great one! What will Miley Cirus do this year?' without crushing the keys, just typing as though I were using an apple keyboard. 'Happy new year! Hope yo hve a gret one! Wht will Miey Ciru do ths year?'. Yup. Don't like PCs.
So I have a few questions about external hard-drives. I am buying a 13 inch macbook pro 128GB of RAM (The newest model). I choose this one for maybe an obvious reason: It's the cheapest one, but I want and need a lot of storage for my movie-making and photo-editing. So I thought 'Gee why don't I buy a 1TB or 2TB external hard-drive?'.
Question number 1:
How does an EHD (External Hard-Drive... Sorry each word typed with this keyboard is torture) work? Is it like a usb flashdrive? You connect it via usb or firewire and a disk thing appears on your desktop?
Question number 2:
What happens if I disconnect it? (by accident)
Question number 3:
Which one should I get? I would rather not get one from apple since they're so expensive, but I'm looking for a 2TB one, preferably on amazon.co.uk.
Thanks a ton!

Yes.  That is correct.

You may corrupt the data that is on it.  You should always disconnect the external device properly by dragging the icon to trash.

Any SATA HDD will be compatible.  I suggest that you get one that is powered by the MBP.  That affords maximum flexibility.  Amazon is a good source.
Ciao.

  • I would like to connect an external hard drive to my time machine and use it as a network drive to store itunes and iPhoto  how do i do this

I have just purchased a new my book hard drive and would like to connect it to my time capsule and store my itunes and iphoto contentent there to free up space on my internal hard drive . Can this be done and what is the process?

I'd like to store my Aperture /IMovie Libraries on an external hard drive.
That is fine and recommended.. use the fastest disk you can afford.. ie Thunderbolt>USB3>FW800>USB2.
In addition, I'd like to partition the external hard drive so that Time Machine can use it to both back up my IMac and the external library drives.
Let me be clear.. you want to partition the one disk.. use it for TM and move your files to the external disk.. and then backup to the same disk.. You can do it.. but that is not a backup.. that is an experiment in how long you can get away with running files and backups on the same disk before you lose everything.. like Russian Roulette.. pull the trigger enough times and laws of probability will do you in.
You must have backups on a different disk .. otherwise it is pointless.
Can I set up a RAID 5 format for redundancy?
No.. you can buy special USB and Thunderbolt external drives that support RAID..
BUT that is still not a backup.. let me show why.. you make a silly move and corrupt your file in aperture.. it is not that rare.
Raid will corrupt all copies of the files.. it is replicated across all disks.
Delete a photo it is deleted across all disks.. you have no recovery.
Alway, always consider RAID system one disk.. backup onto another disk.. and if the photos or movies are at all important to you.. ie your family .. make another copy and store in a relatives house.. There is no such thing as too much redundancy.

  • I would like to combine two external hard drives into one?  How do I go about doing this?

Hello:   In iPhoto I have an old external hard drive (EHD) with a photo library and a new one EHD with a photo library which has more space.  I would like to move all the photos from the old EHD to the new EDH.  Can you show me the steps to get this done so I don't lose any of my photos? I just want to use the new EHD only after the move.

Connect both drives to your mac.
Quit iPhoto, if it is runinning.
If both your iPhoto libraries have the same name, rename one of them, perhaps "iPhoto Library 1.photolibrary" and "iPhoto Library 2.photolibrary", so you will not overwrite one of them, when you move them to the same drive.
Select the library one in the Finder and drag it from the old drive to the new drive.
Now launch iPhoto while depressing the option (alt) key and selecting the library in the new location. This way you can switch between the libraries.
If you want to combine the two libraries into one single library, you will need another program. iPhoto Library Manager can merge libraries into one.

  • I have an iMac running system 10.10.3.  I would like to use an external hard drive to save all my iMovie projects.  How do I transfer the files and tell iMovie where to find them?

How can I move all my iMovie projects to an external hard drive and save all future projects to that same drive without constantly getting the 'can't find files' statement?  I am using iMovie 10.0.7,

Have a look at the help files on this at:  http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0.8/#/mov3fa25bae7
You can have multiple libraries if you want and save them anywhere.

  • My macbook is running on OS 10.5.8 and I would like to purchase an external hard drive

Is there a hard drive I can use without updating to a new OS? I'm looking for 1-2 TB.

The hard drives are not generally dependent on the operating system. Just to be sure, read the system requirements on the box or in the manual of what you are looking to purchase.
More important is that you get one that has a compatible connection. Thunderbolt drives, for example, will not work with your MacBook. USB 3 drives should work but you will not get the advantage of USB 3 speeds. You do not mention if your MacBook has a FireWire port or not. If it does not you can't use a FW hard drive unless it also has USB.
    Best of luck.

    1) In 'ExFAT' format, is there a limitation on the file size?
    Not one that will matter.
    2) Is 'MAC OS Extended' format, only for MAC computers?
    Yes, only for Mac
    3) What are those (a) journaled (b) Encrypted & (c) Case-sensitive? or when to use those?
    Again, only for Mac.

  • To whom it may concern, Since I have downloaded the Firefox update for my phone. I have not been able to copy and paste. I would like some info on this. Thanks

With the previous version of Firefox for my mobile phone it had the gingerbread copy and paste system and now I am not able to do so at this point. I just want to know how to copy and paste with the new update version of Firefox for my mobile phone. I have a Samsung Infuse. I would like some input on this. Thank you and much appreciated.

Sorry, the new user interface in the latest update did not have selection/copying of text ready in time for its release. We're working on adding it back for an upcoming version very soon. If you'd like, you can already start testing it in our [https://wiki.mozilla.org/Mobile/Platforms/Android#Download_Nightly nightly development builds].

  • Moving photos, some modified and some original to external hard drive

I have about 3000 photos that I would like to move either to my external hard drive or DVD to free up some space. My dilemma is that I would like only to have one of each picture. What I mean by this is that if I have modified a photo it seems that both the modified and the original are copied. I don't need duplicates. But if I haven't modified the picture I would need the orignal to copy. Thoughts? Thanks.

Hi, bows4474. If you select pictures in your library and Export them to a folder on your desktop or elsewhere on your hard drive — being sure to select Original Size in the Export dialog box — then that folder will contain the modified versions of pictures you've modified and the original versions of pictures you haven't modified. It won't contain the originals of pictures you've modified. It also won't be an iPhoto Library database folder, so it won't contain any thumbnails, albums, film rolls, books, slideshows, etc. that were created in iPhoto — it will simply be a folder full of image files. You can then burn it to CD or DVD, and you won't need iPhoto to access and open the files on any Mac or PC. But they won't be organized as you organized them in iPhoto, and if any of them have the same names, you won't be able to put same-named images in the same folder without one of them replacing the other(s).
To get all the pictures back into iPhoto at any later time, you'd probably want to create a brand new iPhoto Library and import them into it. Importing them back into the same library you exported them from would duplicate every one there, creating real havoc.

  • How to migrate only some photos from external hard drive/Time Machine to new Mac?

I just bought a new MacBook Air, after my old Macbook died. Luckily I had everything from the old computer backed up on an external hard drive through time machine. However, when I tried to migrate everything to my new computer, I found I do not have enough room for all of the files. I would like to import just some of the photos/albums from my old Iphoto Library but it looks like I can only migrate the entire library, or else nothing at all? Since I don't have enough space on the new computer, it's not allowing me to import any photos. Is there a way around this?

With iPhoto it's all or nothing.  Therefore get a second EHD to restore the library to.  Then you can duplicate the library, open the duplicated and delete all of the photos you don't want in it.  When that library is small enough to fit on your MBA copy it to the Pictures folder.
Then you can use the paid version of  iPhoto Library Manager to copy new events from your MBA library to the library on the 2nd EHD to keep it up to date with all of your photo. There are portable EHDs that are not much bigger than a mouse (the computer kind ) that would work fine for this.

  • Wrt600n Deleting files or corrupting partion info on external hard drive

I have experienced this ordeal two different occasions and 2 different external hard drives. While in the web based utility setting up ftp access and networks shares and such the router has deleted or corrupted the partition table. My 1Tb WD external was nearly 75% full and after clicking save settings the files were gone. So I borrowed my buddies external to try to duplicate and I did however I'm not sure what exactly caused it to erase the drives. All i know is i plugged each drive in reset the router set up network shares the set up and turned on the ftp server and set ftp acces to couple accounts and wham info was lost.

It might be a firmware issue. Try reflashing its firmware. You can get it from www.linksys.com/download

  • How would I Set up an External Hard-drive for movies to share with AppleTV? and Also can I use the internal Itunes Library to the Ext HD1 then Ext HD2?

I have tried to set up an external HD but after following the directions the movies in Apple TV ( My Movies) showed a film strip with the note the location could not be found. I deleted the movie content under the internal movies in Itunes. I did notice a blue dot vs a grey dot net to the name of the movie. I appreciate if someone could poitn me to the correct step by step procedures.  I would like to setup more than one Ext HD, as Ext HD1, Ext HD2 etc storing my movie collection. Any suggestions if the latest in ITUNES 10.5.2 and the AppleTV 1st and a 2nd generation are being used.

This forum is for questions from those managing sites on iTunes U, Apple's service for colleges and universities to post educational material in the iTunes Store. You'll be most likely to get help with this issue if you ask in the general iTunes forums.

  • I am switching from a pc to mac and want to know how I go about transferring files from one to the other.  There is a chance that I will have to hand my pc back before I receive my MacBook so I will need to transfer on to some sort of external hard drive.

I am switching from an acer laptop to a MacBook Pro.  I may have to hand in my laptop before I receive my new MacBook. What is the best way to back up my files so that I can transfer them to my MacBook.  I cloud cannot be installed on my laptop because it uses a version of windows that is older and doesn't support it.  Hope someone can help.

Connect a blank powered external drive to the PC.
Right click on the Disk in the File manager and choose format: exFAT
(if it's a XP machine, first install exFAT from Microsoft and reboot)
navigate to your user account folders on the PC and drag and drop copy (or copy and paste) to the external drive.
(if a program has your files, then export them out first)
Hook up the drive to the Mac, and transfer files to the desktop or to their same appropritate folders.
Import photo's into iPhoto program, import music into iTunes etc and they will manage those files.
You can continue to use the external exFAT drive between Mac's and PC's
Do not format the drive NTFS or FAT, NTFS can't be written too by the Mac and FAT can't hold over 4GB sized files.
If you format exFAT on the Mac, it likely won't work correctly on the  PC.
"Migration" type programs are a utter waste of time and effort between PC's and Mac's for the fact that only certain files (and no programs or anything else) will work between them, also it's a hassle and takes too long. So don't even bother with it.

  • I would like some info on changing from PSE to Photoshop and Lightroom.  Are picts transferable?  What advantages are there?  etc

I have used PSE forever.  Would it be beneficial to switch to PS and LR?  What else would I be able to do?   etc

You can use the same pictures in any program.
Would it be beneficial to switch to PS and LR?
I think I will answer a question with a different question ... what is it that you want to do now that you can't do in PSE?  What parts of PSE are you unhappy with?
Because really the answer to your question is that it is beneficial to some people, and a waste of money for others, and I don't know which category you are in without a lot more information from you on how you use the sofware and what new/additional features you are looking for.
As an alternative, you can download 30-day free trials of Lightroom and Photoshop and see if you like these programs, instead of relying on my judgment. If you are going to do this, please view some tutorial videos on Lightroom, do not skip this step.

  • Internal to external hard drive questions (G4 iBook 10.3.9)

    Hello All,
I have a G4 iBook that the internal hard drive has crashed. At the Apple store, they cannot get the drive to mount.... I have a friend that thinks he can get it to spin, and therefore thinks he can get any info that is not corrupted off the drive. That would be way cool!! He only wants me to bring him the drive, and is going to use a device that plugs into the drive just like it would in any computer, and at the other and it is USB on the end he will plug into his PC to make the transfer. Here comes where I need help. He is a PC guy, and knows nothing of Mac. If I buy an external hard drive will it need to be formatted HFS+ first in order to transfer any data that might still be good? I herd that most external drives come formatted in Fat32. Another thing is I would like to use this external hard drive for both my Mac at home, and a PC at work. i have herd that fat32 will work for both, but have herd some people having trouble with backing up a mac on a fat 32 partition.
If anyone has any other ideas of how to get what ever is left on my drive so that I can recover it, and also how I can use an external HD for mac and pc (although not simaltaniously)that would be cool.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Thanks,
    Sean

I have encountered no problems with fat32 formatted drives. I format my flash drives the same way too. For backing up files or using the drives for file transfer between a Mac and a PC it's very convenient. You can't use a fat32 formatted drive for cloning PPC Mac hard drives. Your friend may also find he can't access the hard drive through a Windoze computer.
