IBook G4 Freezes at Startup Window or gives Blank Blue Screen

Ok, so I realize my description is long, but I've been going through these forums gleaning off the wisdom of the past...and so here's what I've tried
Description of Problem:
1. Computer froze, had to be shut down by holding down power button
2. On restart, goes to apple pages with status wheel (looks like turning gear). But then either freezes on that page, or more frequently goes to a blank light blue screen.
3. Tried restarting from install CD, ends in blank light blue screen.
4. Restarted holding option, tried to restart from a firewire clone of the drive, ends in blank light blue screen.
5. DId a reset to firmware, typed in two lines of code as found on discussion board, it restarted, no effect.
TARGET FIREWIRE
Opened computer as target firewire drive
6. used disk utility to repair, there was nothing to repair.
7. Used DiskWarrior to rebuild.
8. Backed up drive using superduper
UNMOUNTED FIREWIRE
9. No change
HELP???? This computer is NOT under AppleCare anymore.

This EXACT thing has just happened to me!
It is a 12 inch ibook G4.
I am hoping it will come back up one more time so that I can transfer it to a Terra server I have here in the lab.
I am wondering what I am going to do...

  • IBook G4 Gets only so far on StartUp then goes to blank blue screen

I've been trying to trouble shoot this, following Apples recommendations but so far, no help.
When I turned on the computer the screen was all blue with the cursor. There weren't any graphics or icons.
I inserted Software restore disk, Force Shut it down, and started it up, holding down the C button. The screen showed some progress, eg; (can't remember exact words) checking ...software, checking ....network, etc. and then it just goes all blue again.
I wanted to try the Hardware Test disc but now the Software restore disck it won't eject. Help!
I let my son use the laptop for a while and he may have downloaded a whole bunch of jpegs of cartoon art--might that be the source of the problem? I hope I don't have to take it to Apple because it's a Fall 2003 ibook, and I'm sure I'll have to pay $$$. Is it even work repairing in since it's "so old"?
    Thanks

To eject the disc, start the computer and hold the mouse key down when you hear the start up chime. The install disc should eject.
It sounds like several things may be going on here. Your son may have downloaded so many cartoons that it used up the free space on the hard drive and now there isn't enough. This could very easily happen if you have the 30GB hard drive, as it's really small. Computers will do strange things when the hard drive is too full. So that might be a problem.
The Software Restore disc is for restoring the software after you have done a clean install of the OS. It's not something you want to put into what might be a full computer. So this might have caused some problems.
If you can get the software disc out and boot off the Apple Hardware Test, by all means run it and see if anything shows up in the form of an error code. However, I suspect your problem is not hardware, but software, and that should be possible to fix without costing anything but some time and effort.
Do you have any important data on the iBook? If so, you need to try and rescue it. If you have another Mac you can use, you can use Target Disk Mode and get your data off the hard drive that way.
Once your important data has been rescued, the next thing to do would be to insert Install Disc #1 and navigate to Disk Utility. You will see two hard drive icons on the left--choose the one that names the manufacturer and go to "First Aid". Verify and repair if necessary both permissions and the disk. Repeat until both are verified.
Then you can choose to do either an erase and install or an archive and install. If the problem was a too full hard drive and all the data has been saved, you might as well do an erase and install. This option will erase everything that is on the hard drive, so you want to be sure you have saved everything you want.
You probably have the same sort of CD set that I do--3 Install Discs, 1 Apple Hardware Test, and 8 Software Restore discs. If you upgraded to Tiger, you might also have the black retail Tiger disc.
If so, you can reinstall the OS by just using the Tiger disc. If you want to save a little hard drive space, you can do a custom install and remove all the languages and printer drivers you won't need. If you are still running Panther, you can use the three Install discs that came with the iBook.
Once you have restored the OS, you can use the 8 Software Restore discs to reinstall the software that came with the iBook. If you have any other software like a later version of iPhoto, you can install that too.
This will make it like a brand new computer. You will need to set up your internet access and everything just like you did when it was new. And you will have to update all your software. It's definitely a lot of trouble, but it could well fix the problems you are having.
If you have access to an Apple Store, the genius bar could probably walk you through saving your data and how to do the erase and install. If not, please post back with more questions and we will try to help.
    Good luck!

  • Boot freezes at blank blue screen

I am completely stuck. I have a Powermac G4, which just today became suddenly unstable---apps crashing when I tried to quit them, everything freezing, logging out didn't work. So I shut it down and restarted.
Now I get the chime, the apple screen, and then the blue screen (and a mouse pointer) but at that point nothing else happens. No window showing services starting up, just a blank blue screen.
I can log into single-user mode, and the file system checks out ok. I did the cmd-opt-P-R, I reset-nvram from the Forth interpreter, all that.
I can boot verbosely, and it doesn't tell me anything because the hanging happens after it leaves the text screen and the UI starts.
Question: what should I do? Here's a related question: from single-user mode, is there any way to get files off the computer, towit accessing a USB drive or the network?

    1. Start up in Safe Mode.(shift key at startup)
    a. Drag the Fonts folder from the Mac OS 9 System Folder (not the Mac OS X System folder) to the desktop.
    b. Drag the Fonts folder from ~/Library/Fonts to the desktop.
    b. Restart the computer in Mac OS X.
    c. If this solves the problem....you have a corrupt font in one of the above font folders
    2. Remove incompatible third-party startup items.
    a. Start up in Safe Mode.(shift at startup)
    b. Open the Mac OS X hard disk.
    c. Drag third-party items out of ....
    /Library/StartupItems .......
/System/Library/StartupItems ... Place them on the desktop .... If you're unsure whether an item is a third-party item or an Apple-installed item, don't move it.
    d.Restart the computer.
Note.. If this resolves the issue, add the Startup Items one at a time until the symptom occurs again. That way you'll know which one is incompatible. Repeat these steps and remove the incompatible item.

  • IBook G3 will not start up-hangs up at blue screen

My IBook G3 will not start up. I can get the gray apple screen with pinwheel and then after a really long time it will go to a blank blue screen. A couple times it went to the login screen instead but in the user id it says "other" and when I try to enter my username and password it won't recognize me. I am a college student and one of the Apple geniuses here did a check of my hard drive and it checked out okay. We were not able to get it to start up in safe mode; it seemed like it was starting in safe mode but then it came to the login screen and would not allow me to login with my usual information. I was able to start up in single user mode and run fsck which found a couple things and after another fsck it said everthing was fine. But, it still gets hung up at startup. When I try to boot from the OS X installation CD it doesn't seem to be booting up with it, it only goes to the screen to install OS X. According to the directions on the Apple support site when I insert the CD and start up holding down the "c" key it should start up and then I should be able to repair permissions but I can't get that far.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.

There are many things that can happen when you bounce an iBook off the floor.
It sounds like something may have been knocked loose, perhaps a connection? Probably it is going to take an analysis by a technician to tell you exactly what's going on. I have links for firms on both coasts, but you should be able to find an Apple Authorized Service Provider (or just someone who advertises that he/she works on Macs) in a metropolitan area like Chicago just by grabbing your Yellow Pages or local classifieds. I would think you would have a fairly competitive market there. Maybe you can find someone who does free diagnostics who will tell you what it will cost so you can decide whether its worth the cost to repair it.
    Good luck.

  • Blank Blue Screen / Freezing

My iBook froze this weekend. Upon rebooting the thing, it started booting up with a blank blue screen and wouldn't go past. I tried booting into Safe Mode: Same result. I didn't have my installation disc with me so I began following these steps:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106464
I can get into Single-User mode fine and perform the commands in there, ran fsck . No Problems found. I reset the PMU. No luck. Eventually, I got home and tried to bootup using my Tiger install disc. I ran Disk Utility and it found no problems. After another reboot, the iBook boots up to a blank blue screen when loading from the installation disc just as it does when loading Mac OS X regularly. Randomly here and there, after about 10 tries, I may be able to get the laptop to boot into Mac OS X or the install disc, but it will freeze shortly after and I have to restart and get the blank screen again.
After trying the above, I took out the removable RAM and it booted up. I thought I had found the problem but shortly after it froze again. I'm not sure what the problem is but it's out of warranty and I know the answer I'm going to get is most likely hardware related.

    Hey Kyle,
So like Rhonda says the work is not guaranteed. Here are pics of exactly that problem on a recent repair I did:
"I just recently repaired a G3 iBook 900 MHz 14.1" that had the classic GPU problem. Unfortunately, while the GPU was healthy but loose before the reballing the "patient" died on the operating table. This is a known pitfall in the reballing process. So when I got the board back the GPU was working but totally dead exhibiting the dark moving shadows I've come to dread.
The GPU was a ATI 7500 so I referenced it to many other PC laptop graphics cards.
I settled on a new Inspiron 5100 ATI Radeon Mobility 7500 32Mb 9U768 on ebay and obtained it for $26 with shipping.
Dale at Superior swapped the chips and "Voila" the 900 works like new.
I have the Dell board and the 7500 chip and I thought that you all would be interested in what has been giving so many of us display headaches.
    The picture is here:
    http://tinyurl.com/3835w2
What you see is the bottom of the chip on the left and the mounting array on the graphics board on the right.
Even tho' this is a G3 the G4 chip is very similar."
The other place that does this work is First Phase.
Prices are like $75 for a reball and $50 for a reflow (probably not as good). You have to pull the board and send it to them.
If you want to/feel comfortable doing that email me and I can provide instructions.
You could take the bottom off and place a shim under that area we're talking about. iBooks have worked for quite a while with a shim in place. Your's might be a good candidate since it doesn't seem like there's a lot of detachment of the BGA.

  • Intel processor bug causes Windows 2008r2 guest to blue screen

We recently purchased several B200-M3 blades with E5-2680v2 processors.  Our UCS infrastructure and blade firmware is at 2.2(1d).  ESXi hosts are at 5.5u1.
From my reading of the Release Notes, this makes the new blades vulnerable to Caveat CSCuo30572 which is a bug in the v2 processors that can cause Windows 2008R2 guests to blue screen.
VMware KB2073791 also deals with this bug
    The Intel Erratum is C135
Updating the firmware (2.2(1d) probably to fixed version 2.2(3d)) is a relatively long process in our environment.
Has anyone experienced this bug?  Do the guests blue screen at any particular time; e.g. when booting?  Are Windows 2012 guests impacted?  One of our new v2 blades was running Windows 2008R2 guests for about a week without any known problem.  It has since been taken out of production.
The Release Notes (2.2) description for CSCuo30572 is:  "Intel v2 processors no longer cause PSOD with Microsoft Windows 2008 R2 VM guests."  Should the PSOD (ESXi crash) actually be BSOD (Microsoft crash)?  Or can ESXi purple screens be caused also, crashing the entire host?
The Release Notes also indicate that the Caveat is resolved in release 2.2(2c)A.  Does the A indicate that an Infrastructure update is all that is needed?  That does not seem like it would supply the fixed microcode to the processors via BIOS.
I'm basically looking for some insight before proceeding with another FW update.  Thank you.

Yes, it refers to Infrastructure (UCS Manager, FI and IOM). You could just upgrade the infrastructure to 2.2.3d and leave your Servers at 2.2.1d

We have a Thinkpad X300 (with windows xp sp2) gets blue screen after standby. I mean after you close the lid then open it. Anyone has see this kind of behave before?
    Thanks,

I have found the solution to this problem - hope you are still watching the thread.
Express install in parallels seems to be the culprit. Do a custom install instead and set your own virtual hard disk size. I set mine to 12 Gb (12000 Mb)and made it a fixed size instead of "growing" or whatever the heck parallels calls it. I also chose shared network instead of "bridged" (I read that someone else had identified this as part of the problem).
After making those changes it worked like a charm.

  • I see a blank blue screen at startup

I see a blank blue screen at startup. Am I going to lose everything that I didn't backup?

So I booted off the install disc (hold C at startup), did an archive and install) and then shut it down. Powered it up and zapped the PRAM at startup (commandoption+PR) and it now boots instantly. Just curious as to what video card you have in yours? I've been reading a lot of threads about problems caused by the ATI Radeon HD 2600, which is what I have in mine. Sounds as if a firmware update is needed, but not yet available. I also had 4 kernel panics in my first 20 starts. Apple Genius Bar said this was due to Symantec Anti-Virus for Mac.

  • Startup stops in blank blue screen

I have an iMac G4 which has been running Leopard fine for months up until this morning. When I started it this morning it stopped booting at a blank blue screen. I have never touched any startup/system files that I know of. I have been able to get the computer to start into target disk mode to connect to my MacBook and I was able to start up holding down option to get to the disk select screen, but after selecting the harddrive it again booted into the blank blue screen. Attempting to start in safe mode only gets me to the gray screen with the apple logo. The only thing I can think of that may be related is that I installed a few updates last night through system updater. I can't remember which they were, but the computer restarted fine after I installed them.

I have this problem as well, but eventually I get a warning that the application "FileSyncAgent" has not launched, along with "ignore", "relaunch" and "reboot". This is apparently related to a .mac sync problem that I've seen discussed on some other boards, but with no solution. I can also boot into target mode. Since I'm travelling, I can't reload OS X 10.5 from my disks, and can't restore from Time Machine either. I think that for me, the answer is probably to reload the OS (and go through updates) when I get home. In the meantime, I'm more or less stuck. I have access to an imac, but not with Iwork, which I really really need right now.
    This just stinks...

I am a bit desperate and clueless. My iBook G3 500mhz OS10.3.9 will not book. When I was doing the latest update for security and QT it crashed. Now, when I start it I gets stuck on a blank blue screen. I tried to boot it from the panther 10.3 install CDs but no luck. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  • CS5 freezes on startup (Windows 7)

I'm considering making the jump from Vegas Pro 8 to Premiere. Downloaded the 30-day Trial for PPro CS5; it installs fine, but freezes on startup.
I've read everything I can find on this, tried all the ideas I've come across, but still no go; so I'm looking for more ideas!
    THE FAILURE:
On launch, PPro displays the splash screen, whizzes through all the plugin loading, draws the main UI background, draws the main menubar text... then freezes up. It never crashes, just stops drawing and stops responding to Windows. Same results from both 5.0 and 5.0.2.
    THE HARDWARE:
    Asus Sabretooth x58 motherboard
    Core i7 960 CPU (quad-core @ 3.2GHz)
    12GB RAM
    Dual-SSD main drive (RAID-0 on SATA-6Gb/s)
    GeForce 9800GTX video card
    Onboard Realtek HD Audio
    THE SOFTWARE:
Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (with all system software updates)
    Nvidia drivers 260.99 (latest, 10/16/2010)
OS was installed about a month ago, so it's pretty clean.
    WHAT I'VE TRIED:
Ran DXDIAG - No errors found.
    Deleted PPro Prefs
Checked PPro logs - no errors found
    Installed latest Nvidia drivers
Removed Nvidia drivers (back to Win 7 default drivers)
    Ran as admin
    Removed fonts
    No Quicktime Installed
    Installed Quicktime (7.6.8)
    Disabled second monitor
    Disabled antivirus/firewall (Symantec Endpoint Protection)
    Installed Combined Community Codec Pack
    Removed CCCP
Removed virtual DVD software (Virtual CloneDrive)
    Removed DVD burning software (ImgBurn)
What else am I missing? It's probably something obvious and dumb and I'm just looking around it. Any other info that would help? I could post my DXDIAG results, but I didn't see anything relevant in there.
Thanks a ton for any help!

Installing Bulk Codec Packs has been an issue of many systems around here.
Do a little search in this Forum  eg "CODEC PACKS"
Can you try uninstalling it and see how things work for you.  Common advice and wisdom seems to be that it is difficult to do and often requires a reinstall of the O.S as well as the Adobe software.  Hope thats not so for you.

  • Ibook G4 freezes on startup   help

My Ibook G4 has been good to me for years, I try to keep it clean and up to date. A few days ago out of the blue it froze up on me. I took the battery out and tried to start up the computer. It starts to go through the motions ( white screen with the apple logo and dial spinning below, then changes to blue screen ) Once it gets to the blue screen where it normally loads OSX it just stops running and freezes everytime. Tryed to load the apple care test disc , but it does not work. The apple logo shifts to the side and the computer freezes again. I also tried to use the apple restore disc, to run a hardware test. That will load the disc and start to go through the hardware test. Once it gets to the memory portion of the test it freezes everytime. It does not say the memory portion failed it just freezes. Also trying to do a reinstall of the software does not work, it just freezes shortly after the disc starts to spin.
Any ideas would be helpfull thanks
    Ibook G4 (2004)800/756 running OS 10.4.10

    Let's take it a step further and reset the NVRAM. Restart and hold down the Appleoption+OF keys. Release them when you see "Welcome to Open Firmware". At the prompt type;
    reset-nvram (return)
    reset-all (return)
The computer will restart after pressing return the second time.
