Ibook g4 graphics card on its last leg?

hey guys, i have an ibook g4, 1.2 ghz. the graphics card has been showing the "line of death" for about 2 and a half years now, and recently ive begun to notice that the screen will randomly dim and brighten. is my graphics card on its way out?

Hey Slay,
.. the graphics card has been showing the "line of death" for about 2 and a half years now,
Can you describe this line more? Is it horizontal or vertical?
recently ive begun to notice that the screen will randomly dim and brighten. is my graphics card on its way out?
Well first it's not a card it's a chip on the logic board. The random dimming and brightening might be a problem with the inverter, cable or keyboard.
Try resetting PMU first:

Also try attaching an external monitor and seeing if the problem carries over.

Your going to need to be able to make a copy of your data.
You may want to consider buying and using an external drive for your daily use.
    I believe the g5's have a firewire 800 port.
In case you decide to replace your internal drive.
    iMac g5 is SATA 1.0
    2.1 SATA revision 1.0 - 1.5 Gbit/s - 150 MB/s
Check to make sure you can reduce the speed to 1.5.  Some 6.0 drives have a plugable pin to reduce to 3.0 then auto negotiate from 3 to 1.5.
You can buy a dongle for 15 to 20 dollars to temporarily attach a harddrive to your system.
You need an external Firewire drive to boot a PowerPC Mac computer [ a few G5's will boot from USB ].
I recommend you do a google search on any external harddrive you are looking at.
I bought a low cost external drive enclosure. When I started having trouble with it, I did a google search and found a lot of complaints about the drive enclosure. I ended up buying a new drive enclosure. On my second go around, I decided to buy a drive enclosure with a good history of working with Macs. The chip set seems to be the key ingredient. The Oxford line of chips seems to be good. I got the Oxford 911.
    I'd give OWC a call. 1-815-338-8685.

Carbon Copy Cloner will copy your startup drive to an external  firewire drive.  You can boot from the external drive to verify that you have a good clone. When you upgrade your existing startup drive, you can at any time boot from your external drive and go back to your existing system.

To boot from the external drive, hold down the option key when you poweron your system. Pick the drive you want.

  • Grr!! Why has Apple stopped the Classic! Mine is on its last legs, was going to buy one and now they are all sold out!! Im seriously hacked off Apple! What do i do now!?

I cant believe Apple has discontinued the Classic without telling anyone - I need a new one and now they are all sold out!!!! Its crazy!! I have over 100Gb of music, in car, everywhere! And now when mine finally stops working (its on its last legs), I cant replace it as they don't do anything with the same capacity!! They have invented a great gadget and then stopped it! Usual big company mentality - oh well, time to start researching MP3 - no more Apple for me.....grrrrr

No one is making you, it's your choice. However, this forum is for people to seek technical help on use of iPods, not for moaning about Apple's decisions.

I have just spent 2 hours trawling online/high st stores, everywhere is sold out - other than online at a premium - im interested in why you find this inexplicable,
Because usually, when a product is discontinued, a store would drop the price to get rid of old stock (of a product that the manufacturer has decided is no longer popular).
    steveoasis wrote:
what other device would you recommend that gives this much storage, ease of use/connectivity in car/home docking etc & does not have a horrible touch screen (which I don't get on with) - at under £200!? Im all ears.....
    I have only two suggestions.
Wait. As per the suggestion in my previous post. There is after all, already an iPhone with 128GB capacity. Technically therefore, that would suggest that it is possible to produce a replacement for the Classic. But since I have no inside knowledge of anything Apple are planning, don't quote me on that!
Work on the basis that since your iPod is only "on its last legs" rather than "not working at all", it still has a useful purpose. Maybe by the time it does stop working, suggestion 1 will have come to pass.
I have no practical suggestion for avoiding a touch screen, it's the modern way!
Of course, if all else fails, and you end up with an iPod that has less capacity than your Library, you could resort to using Smart Playlists to manage your iPod, by using them to add and remove songs (for example, ones recently played that you don't want to hear for a while) and thereby keeping the songs on the iPod within its capacity. If that interests you, please ask and I'll explain it in more detail.

  • Pismo vs iBook G3 -- Graphics Card

Hi I'm trying to decide which is better, especially in the graphics card department: Powerbook Pismo vs iBook G3 500 MHz..
    According to Mactracker
    The Pismo is equipped with
    ATI Rage Mobility 128
    and the iBook has
ATI Rage Mobility 128 (AGP 2x)
I was just wondering, does this mean the Pismo doesnt have AGP graphics? And does that mean the ibook has better graphics?

    Silent One,
Both models have the same graphics card, the ATI Rage Mobility 128 (model ATY,RageM3), graphics connector is 2x AGP, and graphics memory of 8MB.
There is a hack if you ever want to use an external monitor on the iBook to extend your desktop instead of just mirroring.
However, the iBook is limited to 640MB of RAM vs. 1GB on the Pismo. The Pismo is also far easier to service than the iBook.
There is also the known problem on the iBook G3 with the graphics chip; the chip itself does not fail but flexing of the frame of the iBook causes the surface mounted chip to break its solder connection. There are services that will reflow the solder to make repairs but I don't think it is worth the risk of buying one.
If possible, move up the food chain to a Powerbook G4 Titanium or newer.

  • Graphic card problems after last flash player update

    Hi,
since the last Adobe Flash Player my computer repeatedly either reboots itself, turns the screen black or crashes completely, giving a blue screen error message saying there is a problem with the ati2dvag.dll graphics driver, causing the graphic card to be in an infinite loop. Neither updating the graphics drivers nor deactivating the hardware acceleration solves the problem. Since we have the same problem on a second computer with identical hardware, I suppose it must be a software problem.
I´m using a Intel Core2 Duo CPU E6750 @ 2,66 GHz with 2 GB RAM. The graphic card is a ATI Radeon HD 2400 Pro. Operating system is Windows XP SP3
Is this a familiar problem and can anybody suggest any solution?
    Thx

Hi, I found the file but I'm still not sure what really happend.
First I followed a brodys advices (thanks!). Different was, that the flash player download looked really like the original from Adobe. It simply appeared as an update request as som many others as well. What I want to say is that I didn't go to a web site and downloaded it. In fact I think it was the original and everything was a coincidence.
The Mac OS version I run on the MacBook is 10.7.4! Nevertheless I installed the flashback trojan patch. But nothing happend.
With the remaining 300 Mb of diskspace I could operate at least a little.
There are three users on this macbook.
I logged in each of the user and found that in my daugther uses 160 GB. I found a file MOV_6007.AVI with a size of 148GB sitting in the recovered picture structure of the iphoto library.
My daugther told me that she was downloading movies from a dropbox folder and then she imported them into iphoto. She did it using the finder, selecting them and dropped them onto the iphoto icon in the dock.
Whatever happend later I have no idea. The Macbook was running during the night. The next morning I used it to read news and at this time I accepted the adobe flash upgrade.
In the system log files I found an entry that showed I had about 8GB of disk space free at this time. It should have been about 160GB. So somehow this file grew already that much during the night.
And it obviously grew further until I got the disk full message minutes later.
It is scary! So what I did now is delete the file and it seems the Macbook is ok again.
I wanted to tell this long story as it is probably something new and somebody else had a similar issue already.

  • My 2012 MACBOOK is acting strange - is it on its last legs?

I've a number of issues and questions to ask...
For a few months I have had a number of problems with my macbook - cut and paste only works erratically, at times the keyboard and screen don't synchronise and the fan gets very hot from time to time.
I also wondered if there was a virus and if so how do I find out - I don't use ANYTHING third party and even deleted CleanmyMac.  Looking at the  activity monitor - it seemed Spotify had a few 'error' messages so I have just deleted it and, the keyboard already seems to be synching better - but that may be my imagination.  I have recently upgraded to Yosemite and I don't like it as the problems seem worse - lots of freezing and unexpected 'crashes' - Is there a way to go back to Mavericks?
Sorry to ask so many questions, but I heard rumours  that Apple now  like to build in a 2 year obsolescence on their machines and I wonder if mine is dying.  I am a freelancer and have had a bad year so need to know if it will work as I now have a contract that I will be depending on and can't afford to buy new at the moment.
    Thanks!

Hello there and thanks for the reply - This is the report  - some red items - could that be the problem?

  • Is my iPod on its last legs??

I have used approximately 10Gb of my 80Gb Classic with music and podcasts only, since I have had this one in the last 14/16 months and it is showing signs of serious deteriation already!
    Symptoms
    1. The click wheel often doesn't register the touch of a finger
    2. On the selection pages(?)when Music, Video, Photos or one of the others is chosen on the left hand side the right hand image does not correspond i.e 'Music' is highlighted on the left but the image is for 'Photos'
    3. There can be a long delay (60 seconds plus) unitl the action is followed after making a choice.
On face-value small issues until they occur every time I use it; then it becomes a major wind-up. I know Apple products are reputed to have a short life time but this seems ridiculous especially as I have not got anywhere near what its capacity is intended to be.

I guess it's time to restore it to factory settings and see if this takes care of your problems http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1339

  • HomeHub on its last legs?

    Hi guys,
I made a topic a couple of weeks ago about my horrendously slow Internet speeds (200kbps average when I usually get about 800kbps). I became insanely busy so I had no time to get back to any replies.
Anyway, I'm still getting really slow speeds. I can't stream videos on Twitch without the video having to buffer every 10 seconds or so. I can't download any games or any work files I need without waiting far too long (A patch for one of my games took 40+ minutes the other day). In the last 2 or 3 days, I've been having to reset the router due to the connection completely dropping.
I glanced through the forums and noticed a number of people are getting slow speeds and disconnects. This makes me wonder if it's my HomeHub or a general problem? I have a HomeHub2, and I've had it since we joined BT (About 4 or 5 years ago). I've heard they tend to die after a while; is 4 - 5 years "a while" in this case? If I have to replace the HomeHub, does the HomeHub5 work with non-infinity broadband?
    Thanks,
    Steve

Sorry for the delay - more work!
    Anyway, performance test:
    Download Speed (Mbps): 1.98
    Upload Speed (Mbps): 0.33
    Ping Latency(ms): 53.63
I can't remember EVER downloading at 1.98mbps since being with BT. Is that also a sign of a dying HomeHub?

  • I am unable to deactivate my photoshop program from the computer that is standing on its last leg and there seems to be no one to contact? I have internet, i turned off the firewall

Who can I contact to deactivate photo
    shop

What version?  I ask because it's kind of a non-concern with a Creative Cloud subscription.
If you have a perpetual license, you can clear up your activation records by calling Adobe Customer Support.  If you go to their main page by clicking the red logo at the top of this page, it takes some doing but you can drill down to where you can get a phone number.

  • Phones on its last leg !

Can I buy a pay as you go or per paid phone and put it on my current plan. ?

Prepaid devices have to be used on prepaid for the first 6 months the phone is active. Your best bet would be to look at eBay, Swappa or Craigslist

  • PowerBook G4 on its last legs: sometimes restarts, sometimes not

I've got all my data off my old beloved Titanium and bought a new black MacBook. But now I'm trying to clear off the old Titanium and reinstall 10.2.4 just to see if I can get this old baby running again.
Here's all the backstory. The Titanium crashed and then wouldn't boot. It would spin the disk but the screen stayed black. I tried starting with SHIFT held down and sometimes it got part way into the boot up process. Eventually I managed to start it in Target Mode and connected it to a new Mac (my new black MacBook 120G) and I copied all the data off of the Powerbook that I wanted. While I had it slaved up I ran Disk Utility and Verified the Disk. It had no problems. But Verify Permissions was grayed out. Also while slaved I trashed the preferences - the ones under username/library/preferences including mail, recent items, custompresets, safari and finder .plists.
(The other problem is that this Powerbook has no working DVD drive. It died 6 months ago.)
I tried to install the new OS over the Firewire while in the Target mode but that didn't work. (I can explain if you want more detail.)
I've tried clearing the VPRAM. I haven't done the PMU yet.
What I want to know is: while in slave mode how can I delete some files that'll make a clean start up more likely. Which files should I delete to make a clean start up?
I wouldn't mind erasing the whole darn thing except I don't have a way to get an OS on there. (Unless I can figure out how to install via Target Mode while the Powerbook still hasn't booted up correctly.)
    Thanks!

Hi, ds, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
I wouldn't mind erasing the whole darn thing except I don't have a way to get an OS on there. (Unless I can figure out how to install via Target Mode...)
I'd say this is the direction to go in. The likelihood that you can make your damaged OS installation work again by deleting things is small. Neither you nor we have any idea what's already missing or corrupt, and that's probably what's wrong. A new installation is far more likely to pay off quickly and be reliable.
So when you tried to reinstall the OS via FireWire Target Disk Mode, what went wrong? Please describe exactly what you did and exactly what happened. Better still, try it again, and tell us exactly what happens this time.

  • Start Up & Sleep Problem, considering graphics card upgrade, Leopard?

    Hi All,
I've searched at length for this problem, and as a user rather than a tech have suspicions, rather than certainty.
Have been suffering with my Mac Pro going intermittently to shutdown rather than sleep for a while, I've been living with that. But a new problem has appeared just in the last day or so, I don't necessarily think they are connected, but what do I know?
The new problem is it seems for want of a better term my Pro stalls on start up, it took an hour before it started this morning, its really quite peculiar.
I hit the start button, initial whirring, then stop, the machine appears to be off, but after 10-20secs, it starts again, then immediately stops, and repeat, and repeat. Strangely though, eventually it starts to get further into boot up each time, maybe it gets to the apple logo, and shutdowns, and repeats, and repeats, then OS X loading screen, shutdown, wait 10secs restarts on its own, eventually it gets to the deskstop and shuts down, before running eventually. It started doing this yesterday, thought it might be because I've moved it a couple of times, connecting an ethernet cable, (awkward having the socket on the back!). So I checked everything firmly seated inside, and very carefully hoovered out the dust (although that wasn't bad).
Reset SMC, reset energy saver settings, ran the tech tool for the Apple Care disk, removed all my crucial.com extra ram, and inserted Apple's original heat sunked RAM, no change.
Anyway its running now and as you can imagine if this going to get worse or a hardware component is on its last legs I'm busy burning dvds of important files, its used mainly for video editing, but I reckon 15 dvds ought to get the important business backed up! As I'm going to book it into Apple as its under an Apple Care policy.
This has got me thinking, is it time to get some upgrades at the same time. No matter how much RAM I have installed, and it doesn't appear to use even half of whats onboard, I've struggled with Motion very slow, often crashing, especially when using HD or Pro Res HD video, so much so that I've stuck to Livetype, which is a shame as its limited, and limiting. I notice Livetype has been dropped FCS. If its not the RAM, is it the graphics card? I was thinking of upgrading Ati HD 3870, or better, but I'm unclear if these are only compatible with Leopard 10.5.x, hence considering upgrading to Leopard. And thought I'd get Apple to do the work at the same time.
As to the start up problem, if it were a vehicle I'd be thinking it was damp electrics, and be spraying WD40 to dry it out, I'm not of course, but I'm thinking power supply, or a temperature issue, but as its working when running 4 hours and working nicely now (so long as I don't leave to 'sleep') I can't see it being an overheating issue.
Anyway sorry to go on but thoughts/advice please?
Its business critical machine, as a videographer although I bought this MacBook Pro, from which I'm typing, for just this scenario which I'll use at a pinch.

You may want to just get one utility for now.
At this point, do you need a new graphic card? then you need to upgrade to Leopard. If your software and system won't be a problem regardless of compatibility great, but make sure. Otherwise, Snow Leopard will likely require lots more upgrades and updates.
But maybe doing an upgrade to Leopard and then test the waters with Leopard and Snow L. makes better sense.
Only the "Early, Early" 2006-7 1st Gen Mac Pros can run 10.4.11 (or at least install and officially supported).
The product pages have misleading information but you do need 10.5.7 for the 4870 which is your best graphics upgrade choice. The 3870 came out a year ago and requires 10.5.3+.

What is an SMC reset? The gfxcardstatus worked. Partially. I now know something is either wrong with the nvidia graphic card or its software(the hd 4000 one is better from a performance test by individually testing both cards).
How does the apple exchange work? Just walk in with the Mac and they resolve/replace the Mac or what? Any ideas?
    Thanks

The reset is a little tricky and might take a few tries before you do it successfully, keep eye on for the colour change on the magsafe connector

  • Is my laptop (HP Pavilion 17-e054ca) upgradable to a new graphics card??

The details about my laptop can be found here
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=5403386&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en
It has an inbuilt ati radeon 8670m graphics card...but it's not sufficient for my gaming needs. I was wondering if my laptop has the capability to be upgraded to a better nvidea graphics card. Can I install another graphics card at its place and still make the system perform normally. Would it have any compatability issues??
I want to know the details of how it could be done? Also suggest some good graphics card from nvidia.
    Thank YOu !!

    Hi:
Your notebook does not have a removable graphics "card."
The graphics processing units are soldered to the motherboard and cannot be upgraded or replaced.
Your model has the best graphics solution offered, so if it isn't going to meet your needs, you will have to consider selling or trading your notebook in for one with the graphics solution you want.
