Ibook G4 (mid 2005) dual displays

Greetings fellow mac users!
I have a ibook G4 1.33 Ghz and I want to connect it to a projector. I understand that I would need a vga adapter but I want the ibook screen to display the software interface and I want the projector to show the composite video that the software is generating. I don't think the vga adapter would accomplish this but correct me if I'm wrong. Is what I want possible with the ibook?
Thanks for any advice anyone can give!

Hi,
The projector will display the Desktop or any application on top. What you want to do should work as long as you normally see those elements when the app is running.
You should have received a VGA adapter with your iBook when you bought it. They were included with all iBooks.

  • IBook G4 (Mid 2005) - AirPort 'disappeared' - Help!

    Hello.
    I'm an owner of an iBook G4 (Mid 2005) @ 1.33GHz.
It's been working perfectly since it has been bought. Till yesterday...
It came with Tiger, but some time ago I ordered Leopard. Everything was still working fine. But few days ago I decided to update OS to 10.5.2. After that it was still OK.
I use XAMPP (Apache Distribution with MySQL and other stuff). It set up permissions for 'nobody' on /Applications/xampp where I keep my site's files. Every time I wanted to save a file there (using BBEdit) I had to authenticate.
Yesterday, I got back to work on my site and when I tried to save a file and authenticated - whole system just freezed. But before, Software Update showed up and said that the Leopard Graphics update is ready to be installed, but I didn't want to update that time so I closed it.
I think that might be caused by some permissions' violation between some applications using that directory (I had few web browsers open, and my server was accessible via AirPort at all). I hard-reset my iBook.
When Mac OS got loaded - I noticed that my AirPort Extreme card is no longer recognized.
    http://www.wroclaw.mm.pl/~kaziorvb/no_airport.png
    http://www.wroclaw.mm.pl/~kaziorvb/no_airport2.png
That was really weird.. It just disappeared..
First, I tried resetting PMU. No result. Also reset PRAM. Then safe-booted.
Amazingly - AirPort was back! So I decided to reboot and just get back to work, but it disappeared once again. Tried resetting PMU and PRAM again and again, but with no results... I shut it down and opened it.
It's the last revision, so the AirPort card is not normally accessible.
Closed it, and booted once again. Still no AirPort...
I installed that update mentioned before by downloading it manually from Apple Downloads. It didn't change anything.
As I borrowed my Leopard Install DVD to my friend who's got a new iMac and lost his own, I performed a Hardware Test using my old Tiger (10.4.2) Installation DVD.
    It didn't find any problems:
    Test Results
    AirPort - Passed
    Logic Board - Passed
    Mass Storage - Passed
    Memory - Passed
Modem - Device found (What about this one? Is it normal?)
    Video RAM - Passed
    and in the Hardware Profile:
    Communication
    Ethernet HW address: xxx
    AirPort card: AirPort Extreme
    Bluetooth: Present
    FireWire devices: Not present
It all just appeared to be OK, and my issues were only software-related.
I thought of performing a clean Mac OS X Tiger installation, so I started making backup.
Booted normally and again, the AirPort was back! Found my home network, typed in the password and successfully connected. After a while I got a kernel panic, so I had to restart the machine.
Again, AirPort was on. This time I managed to connect to the internet. Did all the backup, but then I got another kernel panic. I reset the PMU, what resulted losing AirPort again.
I thought that system reinstallation will fix all my problems, but I was wrong. Freshly installed Tiger couldn't see the AirPort card. Same after update to 10.4.11. I did all the PMU, PRAM, safe-booting tricks, but never resulting.
I also tried typing 'reset-nvram','set-defaults' and 'reset-all' in the Open Firmware console or typing 'sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions/' in the Terminal. Still no results.
What should I do ? I really don't want to pay boatloads to get it repaired..

    Thanks for your response.
Anyway, I fixed it manually using Warren's tutorial @ Applintosh.
    Thank you, Warren!

  • How to install Mac OS 10.1 on iBook G4 mid-2005

Hi. I have just bought a vintage copy of Mac OS 10.1 for my iBook G4, not realizing that I can't strictly speaking install the OS on the machine. I read that some people have done it, but I am running 10.4.11, and I was wondering how I can dual boot and install 10.1 on a different partition, as the earliest OS was 10.3 Panther. Thanks!
    -jonasfromwa

Rather unlikely Puma 10.1.5 would be able to support booting a later model mid-2005 iBook G4 that shipped with Tiger 10.4.x -- As Puma was intended to run on G3 PPCs, that often would have booted in OS 9 by default. And used rather different firmware in specific hardware for the old PPC G3 to use OSX on vintage chips. A real headache zone. I'd rather have seen some more parallel development of OS 9.2.2... Almost as good as Tiger 10.4.11 as a fine OS.
I vaguely remember Puma as a 'vast improvement over the OS X Public Beta of Sept 2000' which some foolishly installed on their workstations.
Use older Vintage hardware with partitioned hard disk drives, and watch for those which supported FireWire (iMac400DV was a good one) because you could use an external hard disk drive. Maybe even boot clones, etc from there. With all the limitations on the early hardware that made first practical use of OS X nearly impossible, a newer machine at the other end won't support an antique operating system readily if at all. Not without writing some code; and there probably are firmware considerations beyond the scope of reason. Better to get the correct hardware for the vintage experience.
Makes me tired just thinking about it!
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Ibook G4 (mid 2005) Bluetooth Issue

I am having trouble with my bluetooth firmware updater it says "This version of the updater is missing the firmware file cannot proceed". I misplace all of my install discs like a moron. do i need the install discs or can the fix be downloaded.

The Apple Hardware Test included within the original software package
the computer shipped with may be helpful in determining the cause of
the issues; and the correct one is in those discs you no longer have.
+{Or, according to another post, discs you recently acquired. Usually+
+these replacements are DVD media, if the computer originally had+
+this kind of media and if the drive was a DVD combo or superdrive.+
    +The iBook G4 mid-1005 did not ship with a CD-ROM drive, so the+
    +media discs would be DVDs.}+
You may be able to order a replacement installer disc set for that iBook
from the Apple store online, by calling their sales support main phone
number (as indicated in the web page header, usually) and be prepared
with the serial number of the computer on the ready; and a means to pay
a fee for the replacement disc set, should they be available still.
There is a possibility the bluetooth/wi-fi module itself may have failed,
in which case you may have to get and replace the one in the computer.
That part is on the logic board and has a connector and a bolt/nut that
holds the electronic part to the logic board. There are manuals for free
on such sites as http://ifixit.com/ for the repairs and take-apart details.
    Hopefully this helps somewhat.
    Good luck & happy computing!

According to the copy&paste from wikipedia, HDMI should support higher resolution than 1920x1200. So the question is, does it aupport that on the mid 2011 mac mini. It says in the specifications
"Mac mini is designed to work with HDMI devices that comply with versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.2a, 1.3, 1.3a, and 1.4 of the HDMI specification."
That should mean it should be able to support it, but I don't know : <

  • Dual displays ("extended desktop") on the iBook

This is in response to a previous query that was strangely archived despite the original poster receiving no definitive answer.
The iBook G4 (and various other iBooks) does not support "spanning" dual displays (I believe Apple calls this feature "extended desktop") with Leopard. Evidence of this is the missing "Arrangement" tab in the Display system preference pane.
The Tiger version of Spanning Screen Doctor (http://www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/ibook_e.html) does, indeed, work correctly on an iBook G4 running 10.5.4. After rebooting, the "Arrangement" tab will now appear in the Display pane.
Hopefully this saves some iBook users some time and effort in resolving this issue.

    Thank you for yor help.
I have one more question to ask? If I use the LCD TV like Sony or Samsung with the New i-Mac will I loose deskspace on the LCD TV due to the low resolution on the LCD TV? I thought the LCD TV was a good idea since it has all the input for all my DVD player, TV box?, Nintendo, and the VHS?, but I was told that LCD TV might not be too compatible for use with a computer.
How do I put all my stuff on a Apple 23" LCD display I only can find adapters that can only take one peripheral at a time, and I don't want to re plug a TV box each time I want to watch TV. It looks like I need a box for use with Apple display with 3~4 input and S video, and HDMI input for the HD stuff?
Again thank you for all your help.

In case you haven't already found out, the 1.33 (mid-2005 model) iBook is the only model without user-access to the airport card. In order to have it re-seated or replaced, you have to take it to an Apple Tech.

  • IBook (mid-2005) keeps booting into Safe Boot

My nephew's old iBook 12" 1.33 (mid-2005) has a curious issue. Every time he restarts, the screen reports Safe Boot., even though he's holding down no keys to get there. I had him check in case any keys were stuck, especially the shift keys, of course, but all were functioning normally.
He's restarted several times, to no avail. He can't escape from Safe Boot.
Anyone know why this would be happening?
    Thanks

    Hi, Niel--
Unfortunately, I forgot to mention I had already tried that to no avail. The only thing that's worked so far is something he did by accident.
I told him to restart into single-user mode to use fsck on it. I said to hold down the S while restarting. He never let up on the key until the words, Booting into Max OS X appeared. Somehow, holding down the S through all that rebooted him normally. I still don't quite know how.
But he still can't reboot normally without going through single user mode even after that. I'm baffled.

  • Intermittent Dual Display Issue - Random "Detect Displays"?

Have an MBP w/ Samsung SyncMaster T220, attached via DVI. In recent week, or so, the two monitors will 'fade to blue' (like it will if you attach another display while the MBP is already up an running) then return back to 'normal' as if nothing has happened. When this happens it may stay on the 'blue background' for a split second, or for up to five seconds.
It is as if it 'looses' the dual display then gains it back. And the 'blue screen' seems the equivalent of "Detect Displays" being randomly instantiated.
[NOTE: the 'blue screen' is not the screen of death nor does the MBP lock up. In fact, as I've typed in this posting, it has happened approx. six times, I can keep typing and when the screen returns the stuff I typed in while the screen is blue is all there.)
I've checked the cables, the connectors, the power sources, etc.
    Thoughts?

This has been happening to me regularly since buying one of the new mid-2009 MacBook Pros. It had never happened with my previous early-2008 MacBook Pro.
Additionally, the detect displays functionality is not triggered as it should be by dis/connecting the display. I have to manually “detect displays“ every time. Very frustrating, and pretty weird.

  • Wacom tablet on dual display dual card setup...

...and the cards are as follows, one Geforce GTX 460 (nvidia driver), one Radeon x1650 (radeon driver) As such, I have to use Xinerama and not RandR for my dual display setup. I have configured the driver to use my main display (Dell CRT on GTX 460) and the cursor shows up where it's supposed to, but when I draw, the cursor "splits" into two, the actual cursor, and the drawing cursor. The regular cursor moves as if it's on my main display, but the drawing cursor spans both desktops.

MisterAnderson wrote:Honestly no clue how to help you, but I am interested in your setup. Are you using the proprietary drivers for your nvidia card and the opensource radeon for your ati? How did you get this setup working? I've been trying for ages!
If I remember correctly, I just used --nodeps and maybe --force when installing the nvidia driver, that way it didn't force me to uninstall the radeon driver when I install the nvidia driver. Then, look at my xorg.conf. there's no acceleration of any sort on the ati card, but I can use it for terminals and browser windows, text editors and the like. Can't watch flash videos on it though, and I don't think mplayer works on it either, I'm not at my arch box atm, so I can't verify that.
Also, as mentioned in my opening post, no composting either. The same setup works pretty good in Ubuntu with a similar config, but no compositing there either, Unity clones 1680x1050 of my main 2048x1536 display, can't split the desktops, and I just end up using Xfce4 because it handles Xinerma pretty well.. I have to turn off the compositing extension in the config on arch to get X to even start up.
    :edit:
back in arch, should note that whenever I install a new package, I receive this warning. Everything still works tghough as I describes. And back on topic, anyone have any clue as to why my tablet behaves this way?

I want to have my itunes visualizer on my TV which is connected via HDMI adapter, and still have access to full screen itunes and my desktop on the main display.

You can't do it.  This has been an issue since Lion.

  • Dual display color and other related issues...

I have posted this on painter forums, though some of the issues coming together here are directly related to issues w/ Snow Leopard and dual displays. Thought I would try here....
This is so bizarre. When I ever I run P11(I think this is going on in P10 too?) w/ the OS X (snow leopard, 10.6.2 on quad core Intel Xeon Mac Pro, 10 GB of RAM) menu bar on my Eizo(making it the main display), and the Apple Cinema display left as the #2 monitor, I get very annoying brush cursor artifcats left randomly on the Eizo screen after strokes. One cannot predict when the cursor will leave it's gray "marks", but it will do it, sometimes 5 strokes in a row, sometimes after 15 strokes or so? If I move my brush back over them, or change the image percantage view, they vanish, obviously new ones coming back, as I work.
However I put the OS menu bar on the AC display, yet work back on the Eizo, this does NOT happen. No cursor artifacts. Well, at least I can summon the issue
The reason I am doing this is Snow Leopard has bad color issues w/ dual displays (well documented, much to Photoshop CS4 users frustrations, and mine). Apple needs to fix it... but for me to see the right color on the Eizo(this is my main color and superior display), it needs to be the main monitor(menu bar) in 10.6.2.
So, you can see my trap - Accurate color, or annoying cursor artifacts left on the screen (sorry, it really bugs me as I work) as I work in Painter.
Attempted fixes: Trashed all of Painter's prefs, all of Wacom's Intuos 4(latest driver) prefs and software, switched plug ins on the back of the mac for the displays(lots of restarts), ran cache cleaning Cocktail and DiskWarrior, etc. -- no change, as I can duplicate the issue w/ the above set up. A sidebar or maybe be very related note: I have an iMac w/ max amount of ram (model not very old -- maybe 1 or 2 old) and I have had a long standing issue working on the iMacs we have had w/ this brush cursor artifact problem (in Leopard and Snow Leopard). I am on one monitor w/ the iMac, so you know here the menu bar is...hmmmmmmmm.....?
