IBook G4 on/off switch soldered connector

I recently installed a new hard drive. While replacing the hard drive I pulled the wires that lead from the on/off switch to the connector that's soldered to a board completely off. Now the wires aren't connected and my computer won't power up. I spoke with a service person and was told that they wouldn't re-solder the connector and that the whole board needs to be replaced. Can anyone tell me what this board is called and about how much it would cost to replace this board. Also is it possible to have the connector re-soldered? Where can I purchase a new board if this is the only option?

Welcome to Apple Discussions!
This does happen sometimes, and I believe the leads can be resoldered. However, it does require a specialist and special equipment. The only one I know of for sure is Superior Reball:
http://www.superiorreball.com/
I don't know of anybody close to you but maybe someone else does. You would have to talk very clearly to them about just where the leads came out and what you would need to send to them. From your description, I'm not entirely sure where the leads came apart--it sounds like you may have pulled the connector off of the logic board, but I am not sure of this. If so, you would need to send in the logic board and the connector. You really don't want to have to replace the logic board because of this--that would be far more expensive than sending it off for repair.
One reference that might be helpful to you is an iBook repair manual:

I think the cable you are talking about is shown on page 23.
Good luck!

  • Ibook runs only off battery power

    Hello i have an ibook g3 500mhz. one day when i was on my laptop all of a sudden it started making a high pitch noise and stopped and the computer shut off. when i try turning it on with the battery in and charger plugged in it wont turn on. It will only turn on with the battery alone. I also cant plug it in without the battery and only the charger wont let me. so then i bought a new battery still did same thing. then i bought a new charge same old same old. then i bought a dc in board and installed it then resetted the pmu. i dont know what the problem has anyone ever had this problem and know what causing it to do this?

    Success! Kinda, it's been unplugged & without battery for a few days, I plugged it in without battery & tried the keyboard combination's and...it booted up!!!
    Well I tried putting the battery in and then again it stopped working, removed the battery, power, waited a few minutes, put the power in alone again, nothing.
    I think it needs to be switched off without battery for awhile before you can try a PMU reset & at least in my case the ibook needs to be switched on without battery
    It's only a matter of time until I unlock a clear solution, clearly the PMU reset directions are....unclear!

  • Lifedrive power on/off switch broken

    HELP.  My Lifedrive is 4 years old and has worked well for the older technology.  However, the on/off power switch broke.  That is, it slides easily rather than moving the on/off switch, and does not turn the power on or off.  The last position was LOCKED.  So I can't get into the data.  A soft reset brings up the screen, but the screen has the numbers half shaded, and does not recongize being touched or tapped.  There seems to be nothing that works.  A hard reset is not possible because the on/off switch does not work.  Most of my data is synched with my computer.  But I had done an oral history interview and voice memos do not synch to the palm desktop.  So my questions are:  1) does anyone know how to turn on a locked Lifedrive with a broken on/off power switch?  2) does anyone know how to recover voice memos from a unit in this condition? 3) does anyone know how to fix a broken power switch on a Lifedrive?  Sure hope someone can help.

    This is how it looks like after you remove the plastic shell.  The piezoelectric speaker is attached to the plastic shell.
    Unplug the battery from the motherboard.  I use a small flathead screwdriver to separate the connectors gently.
    Remove the unplugged battery.
    Now, write down numbers 1 through 4 on the blue plastic pieces that supports the microdrive; this way, you will not get lost as you put everything back together.
    The microdrive is plugged into the CF interface. There's a warning sticker placed over the lower half of the microdrive and the CF interface. Carefully cut through the sticker between the CF plug and the microdrive using the very tip of the knife.  Gently unplug the microdrive from the CF interface with a non-metal flat-head screw or equivalent.
    Now the microdrive (in my case, a 32GB compact flash memory) is half unplugged from the CF interface.  Continue on, being careful not to damage the delicate pins.
    Congratulation!  Completely unplugged.
    Remove the microdrive (or a CF memory).
    Unplug the microphone wires from the motherboard in the same manner as you did to the speaker wires.
    Unplug the connector for a film cable gently with a plastic flat-head screw or equivalent.
    You do not want to have delicate film cables cut by accident, so be careful.
    Unplug the connector for another film cable gently with a plastic flat-head screw or equivalent.
    Remove the two very short torx screws.
    Finally, the motherboard is lifted up and you can see what happened to the Power Switch.
    The inner switch on the central top of the mother board was found to be in the locked position.
    One of the two legs of the plastic piece was found to be broken.  The other leg looked ok.
    I manually slided the inner switch to unlocked position.
    Another photo of the inner switch.  If the inner switch is found to be broken, refer to
    http://1src.com/forums/printthread.php?t=121887 , and order a new switch from Mouser Electronics, www.mouser.com
    Part Number: 688-SSSS7A0101
    Manufacturers Part Number: SSSS7A0101
    Desc: SP3T W/ SNGL RECOIL
    ALPS SMD Slide Switches
    RoHS: Compliant
    I believe your inner switch is not broken.
    Put the mainboard back such that the plastic piece can slide the inner switch to on or off position.  Be careful not to break the other good leg in this process!
    Put everything back together carefully.  As you start up your Lifedrive, you will notice that the date and time are set to the default, so set them right.   Good luck to you!

  • When I click on a link in an email, the comoputer locks p and the screen goes black, requiring a shut down from the on-off switch. My version of Firefox is up-to-date.

    The on-off switch is the only way I can turn off the computer, because the screen is black. Then I turn on the computer again to reboot, and when I click on Firefox again it takes from 30 to 90 seconds before Firefox opens, at which point I get a message asking if I want to begin a new session. Then I open emails and don't click on any links. If I check my email using Internet Explorer, the problem does not occur. Your help would be appreciated. After 50 years of operating comoputers, I have never seen this problem. Regards----Lloyd Schultz

    Fred...thanks, but this is not about one site. The same thing happens often, with many sites, when i click a link that has come up in Google search, or on Twitter or Facebook or within a story I'm reading. The link takes me to the url of what it was supposed to take me too, then within a second or so it switches to that Yahoo 'error handler' url, a page that offers search for similar sites.
    Again, thank you.

  • HOW do we get you guys (and gals) to STOP CHANGING THE INTERFACE WITHOUT AN OFF SWITCH ???? A FEATURE WITHOUT AN OFF SWITCH IS JUST ANOTHER DEFECT !!!

    Every time I choose to, or am forced to, upgrade, there is at least one stupid / un-useful/ performance or usability killing change to the Interface.
    Make the product better or faster but STOP making Front End changes that cannot be undone, and also please document all front-end changes and how to set them back.
    Beta testers are NOT a good poll for customer assumption. I beta many programs and am always shocked and amused at just what other users think is "useful", but i NEVER would suggest a front-end change without an 'OFF SWITCH" or "Choice-seletion" - that way, everyone is happy.

    1 - New download window just sucks. I don't need to see History, the left waste-of-space window, nor the waste of space that comes from NOT having a 1-lin per download display
    2 - Who was the brain surgeon who decided that no one wants menus, and then did not document it - we all had to find out in web searches just what key under about:config turns off that stupid button
    3 - Tools/Options .. WHERE did all the OPTIONS GO ?? There used to be pages for each tab ?
    Note - this is being sent from an XP system - but the same stupid things happen on my Win7 and Linux systems

    I thought this was a gateway to the programmers and did not mean to deliver my scorn and distaste to you.
    no offense, but your suggestions, all of them fall into the "just accept it and move on" category - which is just NOT acceptable to me.
    .. I just ran into another "improvement" in 21.0 that has my teeth on edge .. and then the automatic update-notifier, if it was aware, would wonder why I strenuously refuse to upgrade .. - Every time I upgrade, something stupid is added or something useful is removed, and the only 'official' answers are to use a 3rd party add on or just 'accept it', or spend time, a LOT of time, decompiling and recompiling old FF code and adding it back into the current version to regain the Front end I want ... which is VERY time consuming.
    How does one speak to, talk to, contact, the actual programmers or Product managers of this once-wonderful tool that is now running dead last behind Opera, Chrome and Safari (which is two years old and still better than version 21).
    ....I just restored my original downloads window, menus AND behavior but it took a week. I sent the message that you replied to when I was just plain stuck in rebuild, with no idea what was wrong. Took my son to notice an extra paren and comma ...
    PLEASE tell me how to speak to, email with or at least contact, the actual programmers or Product managers ..
    thank you

  • My IP4 on/off switch has stopped functioning.

    My On/Off switch has stopped functioning. No depression, no click and no response. Has anyone else had this problem and if so, did you solve it? How?

    You have a hardware failure.  Bring your phone into Apple for replacement.  If it's under warranty, it will be replaced free of charge.  If not, you will be charged an out of warranty replacement fee of $149.00

  • Java script on off switch issue in IE, Please help

    Hello;
    I wrote this little script that is an on / off switch for a background sound on my web page. I have it working in all browsers accept all versions of IE. I have been pulling my hair out for weeks trying to get this script to work in IE and have only met failure. There has to be a way to get this thing to fire properly and I just can't figure out what I am missing.You can take this script, add your own sound and see how it works. It is very simple.
    code:
    <head>
    <script type="text/javascript">
    function stopSound(){
    document.getElementById('PacSound').src='../video/silence.wav';}
    function playSound() {
    document.getElementById('PacSound').src='../video/RollerPop.wav'; }
    </script>
    </head>
    <body>
    <embed src="../video/RollerPop.wav" id="PacSound" autostart=true loop=true volume=100  hidden=true>
    <noembed><bgsound src="../video/RollerPop.wav" loop="-1" volume="100" delay="0" id="PacSound" hidden="true"/></noembed>
    <!--- the links --->
    <a href="javascript:stopSound();" >Stop Sound</a><br />
    <br />
    <br />
    <a href="javascript:playSound();" >play sound</a>
    </body>
    I am so frustrated with this. I have tried a number of different approaches to this code and I always meet failure. I am trying to make it work so the page does not re-load it's self, just turns it on and or off.
    Can anyone please help me figure this out?
    Thank You

    I suggest a search on the Internet for Microsoft and Javascript. Be as specific as you can and you might turn up a page or resource that shows what Microsoft supports.

  • IBook still turns off after resetting PMU

    Hello,
    My friend has a got a problem with his iBook G4. It showed no warning when the battery was low, and just turned off when he still had some 12% Battery left. I told him to reset the PMU, and so he did.
    Now he does get a warning when his battery is low, but instead of going in "Stand By", the iBook just turns off when there's no power left.
    This is quite annoying, because he often loses things he didn't save yet..
    Any suggestions ?
    futher..
    I've got an iBook G4, about 2 years now.
    I just wondered how long you guys keep your iBook before getting a new one or something like that...
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hello,
    Sometimes he gets a warning, but then the computer turns off instead of going in stand by. And sometimes he does get a warning.
    Resetting the PMU hasn't helped, he 's still got this problem. It's really annoying, I hope someone has another tip..
    His battery is a little over a year old, so I don't think it can have worn out already..

  • Replacing my on/off switch for my Mac Pro 2008

    I have been trying to find online a DIY site to help me insure I take my Mac Pro apart correctly so my expensive computer isnt trashed! LOL  Seriously, I am good with my hands but will need some idea of getting to my on/off switch and replace it.
    Thanks!

    Thanks Bro - Wish I lived in Canada - I'm Thinking about it - it is a very beautiful country !!!
    Your help is much appreciated here, from this Texas Guy -- LOL Thank you I will give it a whirl!

  • How to use on/off switch with the cover on?

    Ive only just got my IPAD so it may well be me but why is the on/off switch 'under' the cover.  Surely, I dont have to take the cover off everytime I want to switch it on and off?  Or should I not switch it on and off and just use the cover to put in 'standby' mode?

    Unless you will not be using the iPad for a long time, you do not need to switch it OFF, just use the magic cover to put it to sleep (standby).
    BTW, the ON/OFF switch is at the top, not the Home button at front.

  • IOS 6 Facetime Cellular Data Off Switch

    I saw an iPhone running iOS 6 today that had a Settings Switch to turn off Facetime usage of cellular data.
    It was in a cluster of on off switched below the Wi-Fi Plus Cellular on off switch reached by selecting General then Cellular.
    I understand that this first appeared with Beta 4 that my iPhone 4 did not offer even though it did off Beta 3 at an earlier date.
    Well now that iOS 6 is no longer Beta, my iPhone believes it is up-to-date, and the switch is not to be found on it.
    My iPhone Settings say its version is 6.0 (10A5376e). Is this still on Beta 3 or on the release of 6? It thinks it is up-to-date.

    Thanks for the clarification; perplexed as to why not though given that it works on 4S in 3G.
    There might have been an argument that 4G was needed to keep up but, given that camera resolution is less on the 4 than the 4S, less bandwidth ought to be needed so why exclude the 4?

  • Cannot shut off computer with powerr on/off switch

    Dear friendly  Computer Geeks,
    My computer is an HP desktop , product s5-1110, microprocessor Intel Pentium CPU g620 @ 2.60 GHz , Bios 7.16 , usb input device, hard drive st31000524as, windows OS 7.
    The computer crashed , I could not determine the reason. I was able to save my personal files by starting the computer in Safe mode. Then I loaded the virgin OS 7 as provided by HP in the hard drive partition.
    It would not start in the regular way.  I then initialized it , pressed  the escape key to enter in safe mode, select restore default values then proceed to start windows in regular mode. A problem keeps coming on. After 20 minutes of operation I cannot stop the computer with shut off command or with the Power on/off switch. I must remove the power cord and when I want to restart it I must do as described before.
    I would appreciate your help in resolving this troublesome problem.
    I appreciate your courtesy and cooperation . I send my Thanks and my best
