IBook losing wireless connection intermittently

System is an iBook Dual USB that was purchased new a few years ago along with the original Airport card.
Just yesterday, the machine started intermittently losing connection to my access point (a belkin model) which had caused no problems for over a year.
Symptom is that all the "bars" go grey within a couple of minutes of boot, then sometimes come back to all black. But then again, sometimes it never comes back. In the Networks panel in System prefs, it shows airport as on, but not connected to a network.
The only other notable event, was that I loaded the two security updates for 2007 yesterday before the trouble started.
Removed and reseated the airport card a couple of times. Apple Hardware diagnostics show no problems even when run looping for over an hour. Ran disk utility to fix all permissions.
Per some webpostings, it was suggested that some system updates can mess up some .plist files related to networking -- Have deleted those, and still suffering from the same problem.
Other computers in the household have no problems connecting to the wireless access point, so the problem is localized to the iBook.
How do I know if I have a hardware problem (bad card), or some software corruption that is mimicing a hardware problem ?
Thanks,
Roger

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus losing wireless connectivity, cannot scan to computer

In our office, we have roughly 4 computers using the HP Officeject Pro 8600 Plus, all of which are connected wirelessly. The printer was previously connected to the internet wirelessly with no problems. A couple of days ago however our computers started randomly disconnecting. The printing function would work for a bit, then disconnect. I found the only solution to this problem was to hit the button on our wireless router that resends the wireless signal out for connectivity.
We hardwired the printer with an ethernet cable and I myself didn't see any further problems regarding connectivity but a couple of the other computers had spotty connections.  Again, each time this can be remedied by hitting the button on the wireless router.
Today  however we had an additional problem, after trying to scan a document through the automatic document feeder, the printer said it was jammed (although it wasnt). When we went to rescan, the scan to computer function was no longer working. I can scan by hitting the scan button on my HP Printer Assitant interface, and I can also scan to email, but cannot scan to computer.
I have gone through several forums and haven't been able to find a solution. I personally use Windows 8, but other people in our office are using older versions of Windows. We've tried unplugging, restarting, hardwiring, resetting wireless settings, uninstalling, etc. etc. Before a few days ago the pritner was working fine for a number of months.
If anyone has any ideas they would be greatly appreciated.

  • IBook G4- Wireless Connection Faulty

It connects, then it disconnects, then reconnects, etc. etc.
I wanted to buy the F5D7050 Belkin USB Wireless but it says it is only Windows compatable. I really want to end this whole faulty wireless thing. It's driving me insane. I almost threw my laptop in class I was getting so frustrated with losing connection. I would take it into Mac but they want me to pay almost 200 dollars to get it fixed. I'd rather get a new laptop then spend 200 to fix the wireless on a laptop I'll replace in a year or two.

I use that exact Belkin wireless device on my iMac, my Dell and my Linux and it works fine on all of them. It is not supported for Mac, but they released a mac driver for it you can download online. That's enough support for me
However, what is the problem with your airport wireless? Intermittent would likely mean interruption in the signal.
Is the internet service wireless from your ISP?
If not, then where is the location of the wireless router you are using to have a wireless connection, in relation to where you are using the laptop? Are there devices such as a microwave, cordless phones, wireless mouse or keyboard base stations, large pieces of metal exposed or hidden in the walls, etc. How far away is the router from your laptop?
    What brand is it?
How many devices are sharing the wireless at the same time?
Did it ever used to work to your standards?
    Are your software updates current?
    Have you repaired permissions lately?
Have you added RAM or replaced your keyboard lately?

  • Actiontec MI424WR dropping wireless connection intermittently; wired connection works

I've had this router for about two years, with no issues.
Beginning on Saturday, our two laptops and phones began losing their connection to our wireless network, dropping the signal every 30 seconds or so.  I tested the wired connection by plugging the laptops directly into the router, and both computers functioned properly - no issues connecting or staying connected.  I have my Roku hard-wired to the router, and that also has had no issue, so it'd definitely a problem with the wireless signal to my devices.
Spoke to a CS rep, who had me first check the internet signal (green, blinking sporadically, which I was told indicated no issue with the connection), then had me reset the router and unplug.  No dice. She said the internet signal seemed fine, and that "everything looked good on her end", whatever that means.  They're sending a new router which I'll receive today or tomorrow, but I have trepidation.
Has anyone else had this issue?  I saw alot of router issues on the forums, but wasn't sure if everyone was having this specific problem (just wireless connect issues).
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

This turns out to be good advice. I changed the channel on my router settings to 11 (per an earlier post on a different thread), and I haven't had an issue since. Here's the original post: "01-21-2011 11:32 AM that type of problem doesn't sound like a router issue, but instead sounds like a wireless transmission issue. you may be able to resolve that fairly easily.. Try to change the wireless signal. you can do that in the router. open a browser, and go to http://192.168.1.1, user name is admin. and the password is most likely the serial number found on the service tag of your VZ router unless you changed it. Once you login successfully, go to the top and hit wireless, then on the left basic security. then go to option 3 which is channel 1, 6 and 11 and are the only channels you should try. So it will likely be set to auto, change it to 11 and put the check for keep settings even after reboot (Directly under the channel) and then hit apply., after you hit apply, test your connection out, if you notice a difference, leave it like that until the problem happens again, and if it happens again, go back into the router, and try channel 6, test it out. and then finally 1 if the first two don't work."

  • Airport extreme losing wireless connection with Time Capsule

I have a 1st gen Time Capsule acting as my home wireless network base station which is configured to allow the wireless network to be extended.  It is also the sole DHCP server.  I have a 4th gen Airport Extreme in Extend a Wireless network mode.  Everything was running ok for several months.  However, since I upgraded both devices to Version 7.6, the Airport extreme keeps losing its connection with the network every few hours, requiring a daily reboot.  Since the problem occured, I have disabled MAC address Access Control on the Time Capsule, and allocated a reserved DHCP IP address for the Airport Extreme - but this has not solved the problem.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

I had exactly the same problem. I also think it's a bug in 7.6. It seemed solved by downgrading my Time Capsule (TC) and my Airport Extreme (AE) to 7.5.2. To do so start the Airport Utility (in your /Applications/Utilities folder). Double click on the TC or AE. In the Menu at the top on your screen go to "Base Station" --> "Upload Firmware..." and the select 7.5.2. After rebooting your device, downgrade the other. Hopefully your problem is solved as well!

  • IPhone 4/iPad (Gen 1) randomly losing wireless connection

    Hi
I have an iPad and iPhone 4 both with latest software (4.3.4) - over the last week or so I have noticed that my wireless connection on both devices seems to randomly drop out and I have to turn wifi off then on again from the device and I'm connected again (until it drops out again) - I would probably do this at least 5 times a day and it's getting annoying
As well as turning wifi off and on i have also tried the following, but the connection still keeps dropping:
    reset network settings within settings
renew lease within wifi networks settings
    turned off bluetooth
Changed to just WPA only and WPA2 only wireless security protocols (instead of WPA2/WPA combined) through modem
    Rebooted modem
    Changed wireless channel through modem
Now just for the record, before this issue started I ALWAYS had stable connection on both devices, I have not changed any connections or hardware on my network since this problem began - also, I know there is absolutely nothing wrong with my wireless signal being broadcast from my modem because I have a Macbook Pro (2010) and a Macbook Air (recently released model) that both connect wirelesly and the connection to both are rock solid (so when my IOS devices are not connecting my Macbooks are still connected and online without a hitch)
Also, the wireless icon on both devices show full strength when they are not connecting
Has any of the Apple gurus out there had this issue and been able to resolve it? If you could let me know how you achieved this I would be eternally grateful
    Thanks
    Regards
    VFP

Presumably you have a modem/router combination?
Since you have two devices exhibiting this problem (which they did not previously have) this points to your router having developed a problem despite the fact that some other devices still seem to work with it. You, in fact, do NOT know that there is nothing wrong with your router because some devices can still connect to it. They should all connect to it if it were working correctly.
Test your iPad and iPhone on some other networks to eliminate the small probability that both have failed at exactly the same time. If they function well on other networks then replace your router (as an alternative you could try doing a factory reset of your router to see if this fixes the problem - see your router documentation to see how to do a reset. If this is a router/modem combo you should check with your ISP)

  • Losing wireless connection with MacBook Pro

My wireless connection is interrupted every five to ten minutes and I am not sure why. If I turn off airport and turn it on again it works for a few more minutes, but then goes back out again. I have power cycled the modem and router (Belkin) to no avail. My roommate doesn't have the problem, but he is using a PC, so I am not sure where the problem lies.

id try this, from finder select go>computer>mac hd>library>preferences>take the folder called system configuration and put it on the desktop then restart and try again.
    hope that works for you!

  • WRT300N - wireless connections -- intermittent problems

I just purchased a WRT300N router and have my desktop PC wired into one of the ports but then are running three separate laptops via wireless.  Both my IBM laptop and my Dell laptop continue to run into problems keeping the internet connection as the wireless connection is dropped periodically throughout the day (every 20-30 minutes).  Any suggestions?

Hi!try changing the radio band of your router to wide...wide channel to7 and standard channel to 9.Also on the advance wireless settings of the router change DTIM to 3..beacon interval to 50 and rts threshold 2305..fragmentation threshold:2304...hopefully that will solve ur problem..ciao!

  • Losing wireless connection with Time Capsule

    Hi,
Yesterday I purchased a 500GB Dual Band/Guest Networking Time Capsule (the newest model). The TC set up properly - I have it set up to join my wireless network and share my external HD - but during backups or streaming media from the external HD, it loses the wireless connection and stops. At this point, the TC is no longer viewable in the AirPort Utility and I have to reboot it.
I've read other articles and threads stating that downgrading to the 7.3.2 firmware version will correct problems like this, but because mine is a newer TC version, I can't do this (7.4.0 is the earliest available). Is there any way to solve the constant wireless connection loss?

    Leask, welcome to the discussions!
The problems that you are experiencing are likely a combination of signal strength and interference from other networks and possibly cordless phones. You will need to experiment to find the best settings for your environment as there are no set rules or fixes for any given situation.
Assuming that security settings are compatible within a network, good wireless performance depends on two main factors: adequate signal strength and lack of interference from outside sources and other networks.
Download iStumbler, www.istumbler.net, to get a look at your wireless network. The application will show you the signal strength of your network (and noise).
If you have a laptop, move around your house to see how the signal strength at various points changes. If you find an area where the signal strength really starts to fall off rapidly, you either need to move your device closer to the broadcast point or consider purchasing an AirPort Express to "extend" the broadcast power of the Time Capsule.
The signal strength indicator on your computer(s) or iPhone is generally not a very good indicator of the actual signal strength on your network.
Perhaps more importantly, see if there are other networks in your area and identify what channels they are operating on. This is a primary source of interference in addition to cordless phones, microwave ovens, and some security cameras.
If you find that there are other networks using the same channel or an adjacent channel as your network, use AirPort Utility to change the channel that Time Capsule is broadcasting on to another channel that is as far away from other channels as possible. This may be very difficult if you live in an area crowded with other networks.
There are also features on many new wireless routers that enable a user to "hide" the network name, so it is possible that there are other wireless networks causing interference that you cannot identify.
Your Time Capsule is capable of broadcasting a wireless signal at 5GHz, much higher than the normal crowded 2.4GHz networks. But, I'm not sure if your computer(s) are compatible with this setting. Wouldn't hurt to give this a try. A number of users have found that they have much less difficulty on the higher band since it is (for now) much less crowded.
Please post back on your progress.

  • Hp 3056a keeps losing wireless connection???

    1. Product Name and Number
         HP Deskjet 3056A
     2. Operating System installed (if applicable)
         Windows Vista 32-bit
     3. Error message (if any)
         no connection
     4. Any changes made to your system before the issue occurred
         none
I have this printer installed over a wireless network. It works great. The only issue I am having is keeping a connection. I have checked to make sure the auto-off feature is not enabled...and it isn't. HP print and scan dr shows it is connected. All other areas is showing it is connected to the network...but the wireless light is still flashing? I have tried changing the wireless ip settings to manual instead of automatic but it hasn't helped at all. when the light starts flashing, the only way I can get it back online is to shut it down the restart it. the last time I shut it down I got an error message on the printer screen - 0X02A6C2ED. I started it back up and it was working fine. I have not had a chance to research this error yet, but will be doing so in a little while.
Does anyone have any ideas what to do to be able to keep a connection? I have tried all the steps listed on the HP support page (unless I overlooked one), but none of them seem to have worked. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi DannyWard
Reset the printer network defaults first. On the printer touch the setup icon, wireless, settings, restore defaults. I would also power reset the router.
I would suggest going through this document for troubleshooting a wireless connection.

  • Losing home wireless connection intermittently

Every so often, I have to re-enter the key code for our home wireless router into the iPod Touch (64gb). Most of the time I don't, and the Touch works like you'd expect - immediately connecting to Safari, local weather, everything internet-wise.
Unfortunately, for the past few weeks there have been a couple of occasions where the Touch apparently has forgotten the key code as nothing connects. In fact an entry screen pops up saying 'wrong password' or something to that effect, and asks for the password to our home router (which it specifically and correctly names). However, passwords don't work, but re-entering the key code gets it working again.
This has been a pain as the code is about 24 alpha-numeric characters long. I have to look them up in a safekeeping spot which is a bit of a hassle.
Does anyone know why the iPod Touch would be losing this information only on occasion?
    Thanks in advance

To check on or change things on a router is actually done through a browser - you can use your Mac or your son's PC, doesn't matter. If you type in http://192.168.1.1 in the browser window, you will open the router control software. If you haven't set a password (which you should do) you can get into the router control software and make changes to suit your network. You will probably want to review the router documentation before you do this or view the manual online.
    Here's some router terms defined:
SSID is your network name. You can choose to broadcast it or not. For troubleshooting I would broadcast it.
WEP is an encryption format for wireless networking. It is dated, doesn't work well with the touch, and is best replaced with WPA2-psk.
MAC address filtering is a security scheme that limits connections to devices you select, each of which as an unique MAC address. Leave it turned off.
DHCP is a routine that assigns IP addresses to devices on the network. This works for wired and wireless devices.
When you are looking down through all of this stuff, note the firmware version the router is using. Check the Linksys website for newer versions of the firmware. Do download and install them - that alone may correct your problems.
Take your time learning some of this and let me know when you are ready for more.

  • "Unable to connect to hidden network" - Losing wireless connection on 1 PC in network - EA4500

We have a two-month old EA4500 router.  Over the last couple of days one of our wireless pc's (running Windows 7) has occasionally been losing connection to our wireless network.  Troubleshooting indicates that it is "unable to connect to the hidden network (our network name)"    Our network should not be hidden, and our 2 other wireless devices are not experiencing this issue.  When the disconnect occurs, the only way we are able to reconnect the PC is to disable and reenable the wireless adapter through device manager, or pull the adapter out of the USB and re-insert it.  (The USB wireless adapter is also new - only a month old and is also a Linksys ).  Does anyone have an idea what could be causing this issue, and what we can try to fix it?  It's getting very annoying.  Thanks!

There are times that these USB adapters (especially those Wireless Network Adapters) requires more power and they can't draw enough power once plugged in to a USB hub or USB extension cables. Can you try to plug it in directly to a USB port at the back of your computer? So that the adapter would draw enough power from the motherboard.

  • Losing wireless connection with my airport express with my powerbook G4

Lately I've been losing my wireless signal from my powerbook G4 to my airport express. The light on my airport express still shows as green, so I was wondering if the trouble lied in wither the airport express or my mac? I'm running on the 6.2 version that mac had offered as an update for the express.
The signal returns if I shut down my mac, and then turn it back on, as well as unplugging the airport express and replugging it in as well. This is starting to occur now once a day at least.
I keep my powerbook in the same room as the airport express, and it is usually in fact sitting on my desk above it...so range isn't really an issue.
This is getting tedious, and would like to know how to nip this in the bud.
Please be detailed in your responses. I'm not to tech savey. Thanks.

I am also experiencing the same problem, also only since recently updating my AE firmware. I will provide a bit more information so that maybe someone will be able to offer some suggestions.
I have one AE connected to a BT Broadband modem. My iMac is down the hall, connected to the AE for internet and for Airtunes. What I experience is that I will lose connectivity to the airport itself. In fact, sometimes I can actually watch as my airport signal indicator in my menu bar jumps up and down repeatedly (although sometimes the airport signal just disappears altogether and then when I go looking for it in my Airport menubar, my network is no longer listed). The green light on my AE always stays constant when this happens (even when the airport signal goes away completely). The BT modem seems to be fine.
    AE basestation firmware is V6.3.
I am connected to my AE using WPA Personal (anyone know what the Group Key Timeout option does? Mine is set at 60 minutes by default... no idea if that is connected to my issue, but I didn't want to play with it since I don't know what it does).
Channel: Automatic, Closed Network. Access Control is enabled so that only my iMac can access the network. Airtunes is enabled.
Under wireless options, multicast rate is 1, interference robustness is not enabled, and transmitter power is 100%.
Anyone have any ideas about what the problem is and what I can do to try and fix it?
    Thanks.

  • How can I fix my MacBook Pro losing wireless connectivity with Epson Stylus NX625 printer.  It will work once and then I get an error saying the printer is not connected.

I can connect to my Epson Stylus NX625 through my wireless network and print a page or two, but then the next time I go to print it says that the printer is not connected.  Any fixes?  I have tried deleting the printer and re-adding it to my MacBook Pro OS X version 10.9.4, but sometimes it doesn't even find it, and other times it says it is connected, but when I go to print it says not connected.  Very frustrated.  I have also installed the latest drivers, etc.
    What now?

Your computer is going to run hot while playing CPU/GPU intensive games - it should heat up and the fans should be noticably loud. As to why it's 'crashing' - can you post a kernel panic log? You may have some third-party kexts that are causing the problems.
