IBook not starting, fan going really fast

Hi everyone.
Yesterday something happened. Everytime I try to switch on my iBook G4, the power goes on, but the screen remains black and the fan starts to go really fast, like never happened before even when it was too hot. Yesterday I managed to hear the startup chime, and even once I managed to switch in on, but it lasted for around 10 minutes, and the the screen went black again.
Now I can only hear a sound, like a click (not the start up chime) and then the fan going fast, as I said, but nothing else happens.
Sorry for my English and thanx in advance for any help. It's much appreciated.
Regards.

Did you try booting off of Install disc #1 to see if you have video? If you can, it wouldn't hurt to navigate to Disk Utility and verify both permissions and the disk and repair if necessary. This probably won't solve the problem, but it is good practice to do before and after software updates.
If you can boot off of a CD, you could also try running the Apple Hardware Test and check for hardware problems. Very likely there won't be any that show up, but it will give you some assurance that your hardware has no major problems. The AHT won't find everything, but it does test quite a few things.
If you can boot from a CD, then you could consider doing an Archive and Install, as suggested in the article. It would be best to back up your data in advance if you can. If you have access to another Mac, you might be able to do this using Target Disk Mode. A fresh install of the OS will take care of any corrupted software, especially if it was caused by an update.
If reinstalling the OS does not fix the problem, then it is likely a hardware problem. But given what you have said here, it sounds more likely to be software.
good luck!

  • Macbook pro fan making loud noises and going really fast. Now the fan doesn't work at all and my computer gets extremely hot almost instantly. Is there a way to fix it without having to pay a ton of money to have someone fix it for me?

I've had my Macbook pro for about 3 1/2 years now. It has worked great until recently. A few months ago I noticed that the fan would always run really fast when I was doing simple tasks. After a few weeks/months, the fan was still really fast but it also started to make these loud noises. Now, it only occasionally makes the loud noise if I move my computer after its been stationary for a while. The fan no longer works at all and my computer gets exceptionally hot almost instantly when I turn it on. Is there a way to fix this problem without having to pay a ton of money to have someone fix it for me?

You can try a SMC reset:

  • CPU Fan running really fast even at low temperature.

I bought a HP Envy 700-160eo desktop computer 5 or 6 months ago and for the last 2 months the CPU fan has been running really fast even at low temperature. It's like locked to about 2400RPM as soon as I boot up my PC. Even if I get 30 degrees celcius it runs at 2600RPM. I've tried resetting my CMOS and tried updating my BIOS, but the BIOS update that you are providing me on the HP Envy 700-160eo driver & update section isn't compatible with my PC. The update is for 700-0xx. I've been using the program called Argus Monitor for controlling my fan speed.

I've got the opposite problem, my AMD CPU is running around 55C and the fan hardly ever exceeds 1200 rpm most of the time its running around 950rpm.  I think the 48C to 65C is running on the edge of to hot in my opinion, I like to stay around 35C-40C. Motherboard, video card and hard drive all stay in the 30C range. I tried to speed the fan up with SpeedFan program but it can not interface.
I hope someone can give us a answer, I checked the  UEFI and could not find any setting allowing controlling fan speeds on my ENVY 700-200z/AMD A10 cpu.

  • G5 won't start, fan going full-on

    Hi All -
I came into the office yesterday to discover that my G5's fan was going full-on, with a blank screen. I couldn't get it to wake up, so I shut it off, then restarted it. The machine powers up fairly silently (no start up tone), but I get nothing on the screen. The fan comes on eventually, and gets louder and louder.
I tried doing a PRAM reset, but nothing happens.
    Any ideas?
I haven't tried the power supply check yet, but will unless someone has a better idea.
    Thanks!

I am having an identical problem with my 2.5DP G5. Since upgrading to 10.5.3 the mac wouldn't boot. Just black screen as above. I reset by taking out power plug for some time and then replacing and managed to boot into my external cloned (Superduper) drive (thank god I have one). The mac still would not boot from my internal start up drive. I erase zeroed that drive and copied back to it from my cloned drive. The mac still would not boot from it. So I guessed that I basically had a drive failure and bought a new internal 500Gb drive. I have re-copied the system and all my data onto that drive via the Superduper program so system is blessed.
Tried to boot holding the alt key down - saw the drives and my new drive was highlighted but screen froze at that state - so had to shut down using the power button.
Now the mac will not start at all.
I hear one chime (trying to reset PRAM will not work - only one chime) and that's it - nothing - just a blank black screen. Fans spinning like mad, but no start up noises - no drive activity.
Taking out the power lead trick has also ceased to work.
I am desperate! Anyone got any ideas?
    Thanks

  • Ibook not starting & "underlying task reported failure on exit"

My ibook is not starting up. It was having problems loading up and getting in interminable spinning ball fits as I tried to use the computer for basic things like surfing internet, word processing, itunes. I ran disk repair several times, and the problems would resume. Finally I left it on, afraid to turn it off, but my boyfriend unplugged it, and it eventually ran out of juice. Now I hear it power up, but it doesn't start up all the way (it's gotten to different points in start-up process after I took each step below, but never all the way).
    What I've tried so far:
    1. I've run disk repair from the start-up disk, and got the "The underlying task reported failure on exit" message.
    2. I did the archive reinstall, did not work either. Tried disk repair again and still getting same message as #1.
    3. Also tried starting up in single-user mode and running fsck, but getting message "root device is mounted read-only." Not sure what this means. Ran disk repair again after this, gets me same message as #1.
I'm hesitant to do a complete reinstall, as I have documents and music files that haven't been backed up. I have an external hard drive to move files if I could just start up my computer.
    My questions:
    1) Any thing else I can try short of complete reinstall to fix the problem?
    2) Any way I can save my files if I can't get the computer fully loaded?
    3) Would a 3rd-party disk repair program allow me to fix the problem without wiping out my files?
    4) Why is fsck not running?
    Any advice would be appreciated!

Last question first, the command to shut down from Single-User Mode is:
    shutdown now -h
Check out this Apple Knowledge Base article which addresses the exact problem you're seeing:

DiskWarrior is likely your best bet for recovering your hard drive. Someone said it is available at Apple Stores, or you can use the online link I've provided here.
If you have another Mac, you may be able to access your hard drive via FireWire Target Disk Mode in order to retrieve your important files to the hard drive of the other Mac.

  • IBook not starting properly

My iBook is not starting properly. The machine begins normally: gray screen to blue and a bar filling from left to right, but it does not move past this point. I understand how to re-install OS X for example, but I am reluctant to do that when it seems the problem is only in getting the wheels spinning... Help! What do you suggest?

  • G5 is not starting, Fans are blowing...help!

My mac is not working. Press button and seems to start ok, but after a few seconds the fans come on at full speed. The screen is grey with the loading icon but never gets further than that. I have cleaned the dust from inside and tried restarting but it made no difference.
Please I desperately need to get it working and have a mountain of work to do.

    Hi,
I had what sounds like the exact same thing happen to my G5 a couple years ago. After exhausting all options to fix the problem I ended up wiping the HD and reinstalling the OS. Hopefully you have anything important backed up. You can hire someone to try and extract any files your really need from the HD, but it will cost you.
The good news is, after reinstalling the OS everything worked beautifully again, and I haven't had any major problems since. I learned my lesson though that Hard Drives will fail occasionally - always back up.

  • IBook not starting Mac OS

Hi, recently a customer bring me an iBook G4 12, the mac didnt start the MAc OS X.

    "strategy err 0x5"
    "I/O error"
    5. If i put logout the ibook try to start but stops as the same problem, blue screen with mouse movement.
    Thanks.

    Hi there!
Sounds like the hard disk drive may be bad, or have bad sectors or file structures.
Perhaps a bootable disk tool (or the OS X installer which is bootable and has a
disk utility on it) would be necessary to hope to fix the errors on the drive; or to
be able to further study the problem to see if the hard disk drive may have failed.
Since the hard disk drives in iBook G4s are not so easy to exchange with a new
replacement, though that probably is a necessity, some users try to check and
repair the internal drive before replacing it. A tool such as Disk Warrior is helpful.
And any supported retail version of OS X the machine can use, in appropriate
disc media, should be able to start the computer (hold C on start) and be able to
use the Installer's Disk Utility to repair disk. That may not be enough; but you
can also verify disk to see if it passes the SMART test. Sometimes these do,
but still have issues requiring eventual replacement if they are well-used iBooks.
If you have a second Mac running OS X, you could see if the portable in question
could boot into FireWire Target Disk Mode, and then be seen as an external HDD.
With a FireWire cable, you may be able to see if the iBook's drive could be repaired
from a Disk Utility version in a host computer, so attached. (Use FW 6-pin to 6-pin.)
I have not tried this; so you may wish to check out the Support page for Target Disk
Mode, and other reading to see if there is a problem with this idea!
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Fans going crazy fast...

Up until today, the fans would rev up on certain sites, no big deal...BUT, just a few hours ago, they started screaming. Closed everything and rebooted and they keep revving up and slowing down a little (not all the way) and then rev up again...and NOTHING is open? I did not update anything, the only thing i did today was download a fewe songs from iTunes and thats when it started. anybody else having this issue?

Assuming nothing is actually broken in the hardware:
If you reboot, and start no programs, and the fan cranks up - open Activity Monitor, set it to display All Processes, and sort by CPU usage. When the system is idle, with no programs doing anything, nothing should be using more than 1-2% CPU, and even that only sporadically. So, you look for something that's using enough CPU to get things hot enough to speed up the fan.
The solution, after that, depends on what you've found. In many cases, it's a stuck job in a printer queue.
If, on the other hand, Activity Monitor shows the CPU to be 90+% idle, and the fan is still cranked up, it suggests something's amiss with the hardware.

  • Itunes download does not start but goes straight to thankyou window

Can anyone help with this problem? I click on the itunes download button and it goes straight to the thankyou window with no evidence of any downloading starting at all.

One of the 3 is most likly blocking you, Its your firewall, antivirus, or the browser you use, like its filters or pop up blockers.
I've seen this issue come up before for Firefox users, and you have to turn off one of the filters, I have forgot which one it is tho

  • Ibook not starting Mac OS X...keeps freezing up and asking to be rebooted

    Hi,
Having trouble since I installed the latest OSX Update in that the iBook G4 gets to the opening gray screen (with the spinning wheel) and then feezes with a message saying "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Saturday, Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button."
Restarting or rebooting does not help. Neither does trying to boot up in Safe Mode. Neither does running fsck seem to do anything (it runs but says that the HD is ok).
I'm a little screwed because I left my OSX disk and other software on CD-Rom at home in Canada while I'm on an extended stay in Europe. In other words I don't have the disk to run Disk Utility from startup. Any suggestions? Can I download anything on another computer, and burn a startup disk of some sort. Or do I need to get somebody to break into my apartment and mail me over the disks? Or am I beyond repair and have to take her in to a German reseller for service?
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

An Apple Authorized Service Provider in Europe should be able to help you out with the correct install disks for your iBook. They may charge you to help out, though... Without some troubleshooting using your disks, it might be difficult to figure out what's wrong with your iBook.

  • Record my desktop video recording goes really fast

Ok so i got recordmydesktop to like my sound card by using the wiki but it now acts really weird.
When i record something with sound the video will go more than double the audio speed and finish way before the audio ends.

  • New MacBook Air 13´´ - battery drains really fast

So I bought yesterday MacBook Air 13´´. I assumed it was going to be fully or half charged but the battery was dead when I opened the computer. Then I put it on charge and it took about 2-3 hours to fully charge it. After that the battery started to drain really fast, and I didn't expect that. I supposed MacBook 13´´has a battery which could last for about 13 hours, but this is to strange. I don´t have experience with Mac, this is my first Mac, so any suggestions would be appreciated.
P.S. I updated OS X cause App Store said there's an available update. Don´t know if that has anything to do with it.

I´m currently in Germany and I´m flying back to Croatia tomorrow. So I won´t be able to do that. :/
I´ll try to drain battery to 0%, then recharge it again. I read somewhere that could help for first time charging and recharging.
Don´t know is it normal for Mac to come with drained battery?
