IBooks older look (3) in iOS8?

I Think I know the answer to this- but thought I'd see if anyone has found a solution.
i use my iPad to read a lot. I really like the 'look' it has in the older iBooks- where you could select the Book Theme and it would look like a real book. Not just the page turning,  but the pages look real.
Maybe not a big deal to many, but for me it is like night and day. I just don't understand why they don't keep that option available. Why make a $1000 unit look like a $79 Kindle?
i Know there is a place for suggestions- but it doesn't do any good from what I've seen.
so I'm asking if anyone has found a way to keep the old version of iBooks in iOS 8.  I still run the old one in iOS7- just make sure to never update it, or have to go through a boogie to get it back.
here is what I'm talking about

they hey will probably delete this post, but I'm really looking for any ideas.

Mark,
      I so agree with you.  This issue is the only thing that keeps me from buying a new iPad.  As your example shows, the original iBooks app looked so much like a real book that I did not miss the reading from a paperback.  When the new iBook app came out in IOS7, I tried it and just could not stand reading in landscape mode without the center crease.  It no longer felt like I was reading a book.  Luckily you could reinstall the older iBooks app in IOS7.  It appears that is not possible in IOS8.   Why can't they at least provide an option to provide the original look?  Does Apple even look at the terrible ratings that new version received?  Maybe the general public has just moved away from reading and no longer care about books.  I use to champion Apple products to my friends but now I just complain about the terrible iBooks app.

    Now she wants to read books on the iPad2 but the iPad 2 cannot be upgraded to iOS7 and  older versions of the iBook are not available at the App Store.

    The iPad 2 can indeed be upgraded to iOS 7.

  • IBook G4 looking to upgrade to Tiger after Leopard release

    Folks - tried to search, but had no idea on how to search for it because this has to be a popular question.
    I'm getting ready to buy an iBook G4 1.2/768/60 that has Panther. I'm making the assumption that the iBook may not be able to run Leopard or run it extremely poor. So can I do this kabookie-dance regarding OSs and licenses.
    After I upgrade my iMac G5 to Leopard - can I use the iMac's install discs to put Tiger on the iBook? I know there are a lot of what-ifs - but I'm assuming the install process is smart enough to say "Hey - I'm install on a iBook - so load these drivers and such" and concerning the licenses - I see it as it's just being handed down - kinda like sibling clothes.
    So, besides a lot of assuming (which I know what is does..), will this work/feasible?
    Thanks
    jc

    Probably won't work. The install discs that come with a computer are made to look for that computer model. Therefore an iMac install DVD or CD will look for an iMac and won't work on an iBook.
    Don't give up on Leopard. I have a feeling it will work on the iBook, with enough memory. The iBook you have is a farely recent model, in the scheme of things.
    I wouldn't expect it to run on a G3, but probably a G4.

  • How do I email a pdf from my iBooks Library after upgrading to iOS8? There is no Share button.

    I Have upgraded my iPad Air to iOS 8 this morning. I cannot share or email a pdf document in my iBooks Library. Any suggestions on how it works?
    Thanks.

    I still get the share icon on my PDFs, at the top left of the menu - though on some PDFs I only get the 'Print' option on it, they are presumably protected in some way

  • When highlighting in iBooks whole paragraph underlines after iOS8 update

    I have the iPad Air.  When you highlight a passage if you are at the end of the page it highlights all previous paragraphs.  When you delete  highlights everything is lost.  This only started occurring after the iOS8 upgrade.

    I'm having the same problem!!!!  I have always used this feature and never had this problem!! I always highlight certain magazines I download and heavely rely on this feature. I will highlight a few paragraphs and then all of a sudden it highights all the prior paragraghs.  When you delete, it erases everything you have already highlighted!!  I have tried rebooting but problem still exsits.   This only started with the IOS 8 upgrade. Had I known this was going to happen, I would have waited to upgrade. I use the highlighting ALOT!!
    if you hear of a solution, please post.  also, if you know who to complain to let me know!

  • IBooks badge count on iPhone iOS8 8.1.1

    Hi everyone,
    I have a badge count of 2 on my purchases when I open iBooks on my iPhone. This does not appear on my Mac of iPad. When I go to the purchases tab on my phone, it just shows all the books I have either on my phone or in the cloud and none of them has a prompt to update. I am not sure if I am missing something. Does anyone have any ideas?

  • My ibooks on mac and iPad does not look like book shelves.  It use to.  What happened?  HT2519_04-ibooks_bookshelf_003-en.png

    My ibooks on iMac and iPad use to look like "book shelves".  This says shows new ibook should look like bookshelves.  file:///Users/mcdonagh/Desktop/HT2519_04-ibooks_bookshelf_003-en.png
    Also, purchased books prior to new ibook will not download from imac to ipad?  Any reason why?
    I'm so very very frustrated.

    To post an image you need to use the camera icon above the post :
    The current version of the iBooks app for iOS devices is as shown on the screenshots on this page : iBooks app i.e. a white background :
    And the OS X Mavericks Mac version of the app is similar. Is that what you are seeing ?
    And when you try to sync an ibook from your Mac's iTunes to your iPad what happens ? You've selected the iPad device's Books tab and on that have selected the book(s) that you want to sync to the iPad ?

  • How do i move info from ibook to macmini?

    I have an older ibook g4 and I want to move most of the file, music and photos over to the new mini.  I picked up a firewire 400 to 800 to connect the two machines.  Everything is hooked up but I can not see either machine on the other.  If I hook up one of my externals via the 400/800 it pops up on which ever machine i connect it too.
    Puzzled?

    With your computers hooked together as you describe, you need to boot up your ibook in Target mode.  Hold down the "T" key as the computer boots up.  When in target mode your ibook should look like a hard drive to your new Mini.

  • 12.1" G4 IBook shut off this morning on it's own.... won't start back up.

    Hi everyone,
    I have a 12.1" 1.2 GHZ G4 IBook. I've been using it with little to no problems, up until the last week or two... which culminated this morning. I could use some advice/ help if you all so inclined.
    Let me preface this by saying that in the last week or so, I've had 2 times that the backlight seemed to go out. It's never done that before, and after resetting the PMU etc it seemed to be just fine.
    Cut to this morning...
    I was on the IBook checking a few things online and stepped out of the room. I came back in the room and while reaching for the Ibook (and looking at the screen), I saw (and I think "heard") the computer shut off. I thought that maybe the backlight went out again or finally died, but when I tried a restart, it did nothing.
    I've tried several key combos but nothing seems to do anything. I've unplugged the computer, taken out the battery (which reads fully charged) then tried and still nothing.
    I have had no processor or HD issues with the laptop, so I'm guessing (optimistically) that it's a hardware issue perhaps and that the HD is intact and can be pulled. I've got virtually everything backed up on my external, but you know there's always some stuff that isn't.
    Does anyone have any advice? I know a pretty decent amount about Macs, but this is getting out of my realm of knowledge and could use some assistance. I wonder if it's possibly a logic or motherboard issue, but that's just an uninformed guess and I could be WAY off base.
    I've got a few emails out right now to see if I can pick up a used IBook off Craigslist to swap my HD into (as an aside.... am I limited in G4 IBooks I can put this one into as far as screen size models etc) but if it is something I could possibly take care of, that would be great.
    Any advice, suggestions, tips or help would be greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Jeff

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    Does your iBook show any signs of life at all--drive noise? startup chime? anything? If nothing at all, it sounds like a power problem of some sort. In that case, chances are that your hard drive may well be OK, and is just not getting power.
    Did any of your key combos include resetting the PRAM?

    You might want to try the steps in this article to see if anything helps:

    If you decide to get another iBook, you should try to get one that is exactly the same build as your current iBook, as the OS is optimized for each individual build. With an iBook of a different build, there might be problems with your hard drive working properly.
    You could also put your iBook's drive in an external enclosure, and access your files that way. If you did that, you could move them to any computer.
    If you have access to an Apple Store, it may be that they could try booting your iBook from the store feed and running their hardware test on it. That wouldn't cost anything, and it could tell you exactly what you are dealing with.
    It's probably worth making the effort to see if you can get your iBook to boot up. If it is truly dead, then you can look into alternatives.
    Good luck!

  • A few questions about audio player in iBooks Author

    1. How can I set the player to a small icon in Landscape layout? It seems that I have to display the player in the Landscape layout and show a big icon (which can't be resized) in the sidebar of the Portrait layout. Is there a way to customize this?
    2. I notice that the audio player in iBooks Author looks different from that in the actual iBook on iPad?
    In iBooks Author it's silver, which looks pretty nice:
    But in actual iBook on iPad it becomes black:
    Is it possible to customize the look of the player?
    3. Another problem about the player in the actual iBook on iPad: When I have multiple players on the same page, only one of them shows the progress bar and time; others just show a play button:
    If I click the one which only has a play button, the whole player will disappear (and won't play the audio clip). I must click the area (which the player is supposed to be in) again, and the player will show up with the progress bar and time (and other players will only have a play button).
    This is very annoying. Does anyone have the same problem?

    assuming you have a MovieClip mc on stage with the registrationpoint in the center:
    stage.addEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, zoomHandler);
    var currentZoom:Number = 1;
    var zoomFactor:Number = 1.1;
    var maxZoom:Number = 2;
    function zoomHandler(e:MouseEvent):void{
        var zoomCenter:Point = new Point(e.stageX, e.stageY);
        var mcCenter:Point = new Point(mc.x, mc.y);
        var _xCorrection:Number = mcCenter.x-zoomCenter.x;
        var _yCorrection:Number = mcCenter.y-zoomCenter.y;
    currentZoom +=zoomFactor-1;
    if(currentZoom<maxZoom){
        mc.scaleX +=zoomFactor-1;
        mc.scaleY +=zoomFactor-1;
        mc.x -=_xCorrection*zoomFactor*.5;
        mc.y -=_yCorrection*zoomFactor*.5;
    else{
    trace("maximal zoom level reached");

  • IBooks 1.5 looses file name when PDF moved from other apps in iOS 5.0.1 on iPad!

    Opening a titled email PDF attachment in iBooks results in untitled document within ibook. The document transfers from email to good reader or other PDF reader applications without issue. It is an iBooks issue. This started in version 1.5. How can I load a previous version of iBooks?
    Looking at the iTunes books tab the same document has a numerical value as the title.
    The same thing happens if you open a titled PDF document in good reader and use the open with iBook button.
    Anytime a document is sent to iBooks on the iPad, the title becomes blank in iBooks, but the title in iTunes is a 128 bit number.
    How do you report such an issue to apple iBook team?

    I am having a similar problem, the pdf "book" has one name on itunes on my mac, but on my ipad (IOS 5.0.1 build 9A405) the names are different. Plus pdf "books" keep disappearing. If I go into itunes on the Mac and make any change in the "get info" such as comment etc and resync the pdf shows up again.
    Several days later the file again disappears from the ipad (no I am NOT deleting them and I have plenty of free memory on the ipad) and I have make yet another small change.
    I did not encounter this behaviour in previous version of ibook.

  • My ibook G4 powerpc 10.4.11 is locking up. What kind of disk do I need to buy to repair it?

    I need to buy a copy of the OS X software to repair it but I'm confused about what I need.  Install disk or restore disk?  Is there a difference? Can I use 10.5 instead of 10.4?  All I do is surf the internet with it so I don't care about ilife and whatever else comes with the software.  I keep seeing "old model" in descriptions for the software and that confuses me more because I don't know if I'm old or new.  This is my first Mac and I think I installed an incompatible version of Adobe flash and it messed it up.

    janellefromlees summit wrote:
    I will try the safe boot.  Meanwhile, I see software listed for sale as "Power Mac G4" Tiger install.  Is this the same thing as my powerPC ibook?
    No, it is not the same.
    What is a powermac?
    A Power Mac is a desktop computer. It is the predecessor to the Mac Pro.
    I've heard of powerbook, macbook, ibook.  Is installation software compatible for any mac (desktop or laptop) or do I need to find something specifically designed for ibook?
    No, just any old system won't work on the iBook. OS software for iBooks older than yours won't work with it, and neither will software for other types of Macs. I take it that you don't have the original system software discs that came with it when it was new? You could call Apple and see if they have the software discs for your iBook. Be prepared to give them the serial number. If they have them available, they will send them to you for a fee.
    You could buy a full retail version of Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger). It is really what you need most, since that is what is installed on the iBook now.
    Good luck with it. We are always here to help.

  • Using custom fonts in iBooks Author

    I have a book in South Asian (Indic) script. The encoding is Unicode. I wanted to see how different fonts would look on iPad. Using iBook Author i created two different versions of the book. One used Gujarati MT, Apple supplied font. The second used open source TTF font. It checked out fine by MacOS when I installed it. The rendering of conjuncts (which would use additional glyph present in the font file) on iBook Author  looks good. When I use "preview" function of iBook Author to see how the content would look on iPad, conjuncts dont use special glyph but only standard character (I guess GSUB is not utilized). I tried the same experiment with Arial Unicode MS and Shruti both are standard fonts provided under Windows. it appears that only Apple supplied fonts have correct glyph substitution on iPad.
    Is there a way to fix it?
    If the issue is with iBook Author, I can use another software. My book is plain text so Author is an overkill. I was using it to test embedding of custom fonts because Author is easy to use.
    If the issue is missing definition in the font that is required by iPad rendering engine, I can get the font author to enhance the font.
    I attach four images. First two are from iBook Author where rendering is correct. The next two are from iPad where rendering using non Apple font is messed up.

    rajeshfrompalo alto wrote:
    Is comment about enhancing the font to support AAT still relevant? Are you saying that iOS needs those AAT extension that macOS does not need? Is this mostly around MORX table?
    iOS (and OS X) comes with two Gujarati fonts, Gujarati MT and Gujarati Sangam MN.  So the easiest thing to do is to use one of those.   Other platforms will probably have their own default Gujarati fonts with different names.
    If you want to embed a different Gujarati font in your .ibooks format book, then you will indeed have to convert that font from OpenType to AAT before iBooks will display it correctly.   It's not true that OS X no longer needs AAT Indic fonts -- Pages for example still cannot use Opentype Indic fonts.
    To convert an Opentype Indic font to an AAT Indic font I think someone will have to add a morx table along the lines of what is contained in Gujarati MT.
    Bear in mind that iBooks Author creates a format that can only be read on an iPad (unless you want to export to PDF).  If you want to produce books for all platforms and readers, then you need to use .epub format and a different app, like Pages or Indesign.   With epub format you would probably not normally try to embed fonts but just  rely on the reader to supply whatever Gujarati font is already on the device.

  • IBooks Author Page Size Question

    I would like to use iBooks Author to put together a book for print (instead of using InDesign which is not intuitive for photo placement). iBooks Author looks good and the templates seem to work very well, but I have found no way to specify total page size dimensions - specifically A4 (210 × 297 mm) in portrait orientation.
    Also the PDF export - which I should be able to use for printing - has strange lines around the overall graphics (indicating larger actual document size?), and has a big watermark at the bottom reading "iBooks Author," which wouldn't be good for printing.
    Can anyone give me instructions as to how I can:
    1) Specify page spread dimensions for the whole document (except for the cover which I will design separately)?
    2) Export to PDF in proper printing format without faulty document dimensions or watermarks?

    esagustin013,
    Indesign as well as Quark are still the mainstream layout tools fore creating Print collateral...as of the latest versions of InDesign and Quark...both are beginning to introduce ebook production.
    As for your last sentence, it is not true that both are beginning to introduce eBook production. Adobe InDesign has been doing that for a couple of years, along with PDF technology. Now it even gets much better and, it is true that it is getting more powerful. It is not recommended for novices to use these apps, so iBooks Author app is a very nice simpe app especially designed for iPad platform.
    I would highly suggest you search for a tutorial pertaining to how to place images into indesign and how to minipulate them with your text boxes. Far more power in these programs...completely tailored for Print.
    Again, last sentence, it is not true that it was completely tailored for Print production. Adobe InDesign app is a totally different app now than it was once developed for at the time when Adobe first released InDesign 1.0 some years ago. I can't believe how time flew from 1.0 to now CS5.5. However, you are correct it is very powerful professional layout app for print and even eBook production and even ePUB production and all. And even PDF files for web. Even it works just fine in iPad opening PDF files.
    I am intrigued by iBooks Author is capable of making more interactive iPad iBook textbooks.
    I am interested about what Adobe have to say about iBooks Author app.   I wonder if Apple eventually develop professional-grade layout app - more powerful than that of iBooks Author or iWorks app. I guess we'll wait and see. Probably not.
