ICal quits while opening

Since yesterday, both iCal and Safari have been quitting as I have been trying to open them. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix it. I've checked for updates, but there are none available.
Please help, I'm lost without my iCal
Michelle

I am having a similar problem. iCal will run for 1 to 3 min, then "quit unexpectedly". Started about the same time I did software update last week. iCal seems to run OK in a second acct on the same machine. This is a big problem for me - please help.
Troubleshooting so far: I did the font checks (HelveticaNeue is enabled & I resolved all duplicate fonts and checked for corrupted fonts w/Fontbook, all essential system fonts are there). I ran Preferential Treatment and got rid of the one preference that showed a problem (not iCal). I ran Onyx to reset almost everything and to check & repair permissions.
Below is the initial part of several pages of crash log. I have the rest saved if it would be helpful I'll post it.

  • ICal crashes while opening

I've read all the other posts about iCal crashing when opened and none of the fixes have worked for me. HelvelticaNeue.dfont is in the right place, moving the plist file had no effect, all of my software is up to date, iCal doesn't even open so I can't select preferences or anything like that. I'm in the process of backing up all my files so that I can reinstall the operating system but that idea makes me nervous because I run my business from this computer and I can't afford to loose anything.
When iCal stopped working I had earlier encountered a problem with my trash and applications folder. The trash was "mirroring" the contents of my application folder and I deleted half of my apps. I copied the deleted apps from my external hard drive to my computer and everything is working fine except iCal which was NOT one of the apps that was deleted. However a utility or library file may have been affected. Also, my Palm smartphone will not sync which I suspect is a related issue.
One thing to note is that the alarms I had previously scheduled do pop on time.
I'm going mental without my schedule. I need a solution ASAP!

I see a similar post from July 30, 2007. "iCal quits at the instant when an alarm is supposed to sound"
We have the same problem with one of our laptops at school. We are all using iCal this year, some on eMacs some on laptops. One of our teachers uses iCal extensively and her alarms trigger iCal to crash every time. We followed all the ideas on the forum including reloading iCal through OS Reinstall but her iCal still crashes. iCal ran seamlessly on her eMac(PowerPC) but it crashes every time on her MacBook(Intel-based).
Does anyone know if the code for the alarms is handled differently by the different processors?

  • ICal quits upon opening

I attempted to load a schedule of ball games to my iCal from a website. iCal will now open for about 10 seconds and then closes unexpectedly. I can see that it is creating unnamed calendars going down the side of the list of calendars. Is there a way to delete the data from iCal without opening it? I could then repopulate the calendar from my iPhone. Thanks.

Try moving com.apple.iCal.plist to your desktop. This may get rid of all iCal data. Instead of deleting it, moving it to your desktop will allow you to move it back in case something goes wrong.
    com.apple.iCal.plist will be located in +Your Home Directory+ /Library/Preferences

  • ICal hangs while opening an existing event

I am having so much trouble with iCal on my MacBook 2007 running Lion 10.7.1.
When I try to open an existing event to edit, everything is frozen for 15 to 20 seconds. I know that's not a long time in the big picture of things, but still, it's quite annoying.
I have seen 2 different Geniuses at the Apple Store and both were stumped.
Is it just because my computer is so old? It's barely over the edge of qualifying to use Lion.
Any ideas would be welcome. Thanks very much.

OK. I exported the iCal archive and then re-imported it. Now it is freezing and I had to force quit.
I have other things I need to attend to now. I'll try again.
I wonder if my computer is just too old.
    Thanks.

  • ICal quits on opening on iPad

iCal suddenly quits immediately after launching. This started today - no problems over past 6 months of use. My iPhone also demonstrates the same problem, but iCal on MacBook pro is working fine. All are linked to iCloud. Reset of the iPad did not solve the issue. Please help!!

Thanks Diavonex and computer.savvy for your kind consideration. This may be premature, but iCal is working again.  I turned off all the iCloud settings for iCal, and rebooted, but iCal would not load. Then tried turning iCal settings back on for iCloud, but it would not accept the attempt to do this. Only a mild panic at this point ... I turned off all iCloud settings for mail, reminders, bookmarks etc, rebooted, and, voila! I was able to turn on  cloud settings for all these apps, including iCal. Went to start iCal and it got up and has stayed up!!!  If this again becomes unstable I will try an iPad restore as per your suggestion, computer.savvy (I actually got out the connecting cable, intending to perform a restore from iTunes, and tried the above actions while I was waiting for the MacBook to boot).
Thank you for taking the time to reply - I love the Mac Community!!

  • HT201412 I have updated IOS6 software today and after this, one of the application "Tamil Daily Calendar" by iAvadana Labs quits when open. Need support

I have updated with new IOS6 softward today and after this one of the application "Tamil Daily Calendar" of iAvatna Labs not working. It quits while opening the application.

If it's just the one app, try deleting it from the phone and re-installing it. If that doesn't fix it, contact the app developer for assistance. It may not be fully compatible with iOS 6.

  • The last time you opened Sample_App, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to reopen its windows again?

    Hi,
When I run my Mac application, I get a error message saying "The last time you opened Sample_App, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to reopen its windows again?".
This message is not localized, i.e. this error message always display in English even when my system language is set to non-English language.
I want to know if its a System throws error message? How can I localize this message?
Your help/support will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folders. In OS X 10.9 there are two sandboxes, while in 10.8 there is only one. If you're running a version older than 10.8, this comment isn't applicable.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

How could I re-open my mail box, as an error message blocked "The last time you opened Mail, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again?" Even I entered re-open, the airbook does not response but prompt the same error message again.

  • The last time you opened Finder, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again?

The following phrase/option box keeps popping up on my finder: The last time you opened Finder, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again? regardless of whether I click to reopen or not the box disappears and then comes back again regardless of which answer I pick. How do I get rid of this annoyance?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if iTunes crashed, you would enter "iTunes" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

updated today and cannot open my mails it says: The last time you opened Mail, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again?

    Do a backup.
    Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

This works but you have to get all the Envelope Index files that might be in there.
Make sure that you also delete Envelope Index-shm and Envelope Index-wal
and there could be some files named this with gibberish as suffixes too.

Compressor 4 crashes on opening keep getting this warning: The application “Compressor” unexpectedly quit while trying to restore its windows.  Do you want to try to restore its windows again? Tried Restoring windows. It crashes again.  Tried not = Same result.  This is the first time I've actually used the app although I purchased it back in April (I think).  I had my first longform project completed in FCPX and tried sending it to Compressor 4 and got this result over and over again.

    Steve,
Sorry to say I've not had any success in getting Compressor 4 to work.  I've tried every suggestion mentioned earlier on this topic to no avail.  Compressor 4 is dead in the water.  On the last two projects I had to go back to Compressor 3.x.xx to complete the projects.  The only hint that I have of wha may have happened concerns something I did early on.  When I bought this computer I decided to replace the hard drive with a larger one.  Since I already had my software up and working on the drive that came with the computer I decided to clone everything to the new larger drive.  As I recall, Compressor 4 worked on the original drive but it doesn't work on this cloned version.  So maybe there is a relationship there.  I haven't had a chance yet to reinstall my old drive and see if C 4 works on it.  If it does work then I know the source of the problem but not how to fix it on the new drive.  Did you do anything like cloning your drive recently too?  It's just a thought and may not lead anywhere but later this week when I catch a break I'll give the old drive a try and will post my results.
    Thanks,
    Peter
