ICal won't launch in Leopard

After installing Leopard earlier tonight iCal won't launch. Whenever I try to open it I immediately get an "unexpectedly quit" error message. I've repaired the permissions in disk utility but that didn't seem to do anything. Any help would be much appreciated. I depend on iCal.

Look for files in a com.apple.ical...plist format. trash them and restart iCal.

  • Ical won't launch with Leopard

Just installed Leopard and now says I can't use this version of iCal with my new operating system. Is there another version to download?

    magwill,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
What version of iCal are you attempting to use? It should be Version 3.0.5.
Is the iCal you are attempting to use in your Macintosh HD/Applications folder?
    How did you install Leopard?
Have you attempted to "Try Disk Utility" to Repair Disk Permissions?
There is no download of iCal available, but it can be accomplished using your Leopard installation disk. This is the procedure: (but I recommend that you answer my questions before proceeding)
    1. Insert your Leopard Installation disk into the computer.
    2. The disk will appear on your desktop.
    3. Double click on the "Optional Installs" folder.
    4. Double click on the "Optional Installs.mpkg."
    5. Click on (Continue) in Introduction.
    6. Click on (Continue) in Software License Agreement.
    7. Click on (Agree) to agree to the terms of the software license agreement.
    8. Click on the disclosure arrow ▶ next to Applications.
    9. Select (✓) iCal.
    10. Click (Continue).
    11. After iCal has been reinstalled, download and reinstall the OS X 10.5.5 Combo Update to bring iCal up to the most recent version.

  • ICal won't launch after 10.5.2 upgrade

my iCal won't launch after 10.5.2 upgrade. it won't even give an "unexpectedly quit" message, it pops up then quits, then nothing. This happened immediately after the upgrade today. I got the leopard disc out and did an archive and install then it worked perfect, no issues, then I did a software update (since I was back to 10.5.0), and installed the 10.5.2 security upgrade, now iCal will not launch, am I the only one with this problem?

I had the exact same problem -- doubled events and could not edit anything. I flushed the cache as describe in some more detail here: http://www.tipstrs.com/tip/2506/iCal-problem-with-Leopard-Upgrade and everything started working just fine.

  • Address Book Won't Launch in Leopard

Suddenly, Address Book won't launch in Leopard. It worked after initial installation but now won't open. I have tried re-syncing with .Mac, re-starting. Address Book info (e-mail addresses) is still accurate and available in Mail.
I also installed Leopard on my Mac Book. No problems, Address book works fine.
    How can I fix?

    Here's what I got.

    Hi
I am new to this forum so forgive me if you have covered this, I have searched the forum for an answer but no luck so far. I have just installed Leopard and updates and now both Logic Pro 8 and Garage band won't launch. I can only launch Logic if i don't use the core audio so it's just for midi, but as soon as I try to use the computers audio side it crashes. can anyone help me solve this issue ?

  • ICal won't launch on mbp running OSX Lion 10.7.4

iCal on my MBP won't launch iCal or Mail. When selecting each I get a 'dock logo' bouncing once or twice but no response after that. Any thought's?

    Good evening Ferd 11
Thanks for the advice. I tried the Safe Boot with no luck, however, the 'client combo' update has worked and Mail and iCal is now up and running.
I wasted 3 hours today at Apple's Genius Bar in Sheffield, UK, in our 5 minutes of conversation the 'muppet' suggested I went home backed up and did an 'erase and install' on the HD.
Pre iPhone/iPad the tech service in our Meadowhall store was first class. As a working pro photographer I was able to build up a relationship with the team, nothing was too much trouble! Good times, they had a guy called Al, weird hair cut but top bloke!
Many thanks for your hepl again, Shaun

  • ITunes won't launch with Leopard

    Hi!
I recently purchashed and installed Leopard on my MacBook, and ever since the OS upgrade I cannot launch iTunes. At first I kept getting an annoying error message (8791) with an older version of iTunes (v7.4.2). I asked for help here in the discussions forum, and was advised according to this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1207611&tstart=0 - which unfortunately left me at a dead end. Then I figured an updated version might do the trick, but after installing v7.5 iTunes still will not launch - with the updated version I don't even get an error message - it just ignores the launch command all together...
    Anyone - please help!

I am having the same problem and have followed the same advice with the same results. In addition my finder is missing the searchlight field and reboots every time I try to open finder preferences. I also can't open photoshop. I get the message "Could not initialize Photoshop because there is not enough memory (RAM). I'm running a macbook pro. I don't know if this additional info helps but I am desperate.

  • Address Book and iCal won't launch

Neither my Address Book nor my iCal will Launch. I've tried binning the preferences and short of replacing the operating system I wondered if someone might have a view on this.

    HI Michael,
Using your restore disk(s) you could use Software Restore from your Applications/Software Restore and reinstall iCal and Address Book. Launch Software Restore and just follow the onscreen instructions.

  • ICal won't sync between Leopard & Tiger computers

So, I'm loving Leopard on my Intel iMac and iBook, however the work cpu is still on Tiger for technical reasons.
Problem: My iCal on the home computers doesn't sync with my work machine..... Am I doing something wrong (do I need to reset something), or is this a 'known' issue?
I appreciate any info... (i'm having a tough time syncing my home/personal calendars! :))

I found the solution last night -- and it involved resetting the sync data. I thought that I had already done this by resetting the sync data in the iSync application, but that was the wrong place.
    Here's what you should do:
First decide which computer has your "master" calendar. For me that was the one with 10.4.11 on it, as I could get my 10.5.1 calendar events onto the 10.4.11 computer, but not vice-versa.
Second, from the "master" computer, open up the .Mac preference pane, click on the "Advanced" tab, and then click "Reset Sync Data."
When given the option, make sure that you use the data on your computer to replace the data on .Mac.
Third, go to the 10.5.1 computer, and do the same thing (note that the .Mac pref pane is organized a bit differently).
This time, make the sync direction go the other way -- from .Mac back to your 10.5.1 computer.
Note that after clicking the "resent sync data" button, you are offered an option to limit things to just the calendars (excluding things like contacts, keychains, etc.). I recommend doing that.
Note also that you might want to export the database from iCal (and/or Address Book) before doing this -- you can do that from the "File" menu in both apps -- it's just a good back-up strategy in case disaster strikes.
That's it -- for me, everything synced properly between computers after doing these things.
Note that there is an Apple Support Document I also found on this topic that spurred me to try this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301378
    Good luck,
    -Barry

  • ICal won't launch

All of a sudden, when I click on iCal logo, nothing happens. I'm wondering if a friend who was sitting at my computer briefly could have trashed a pertinent file by mistake? The headers come up--file, edit, calendar, but I can't get the actual calendar to appear. Never had a problem before. Any ideas of what could have happened?

    Hi,
It is possible that your iCal preference file may be corrupted.
In your user's Library > Preferences find a file called com.apple.iCal.alarmsCache.plist move this to the Desktop and restart iCal.
    Best wishes

  • AW6.2.9 won't launch in Leopard

Since updating my MBP to 10.5.6, AW will not launch. It begins and then shuts down at the startup points and opens a message box asking me if I want to report the problem to apple. Please help.

Whenever you do an update, it's a good idea to do two maintenance tasks, one for the system (Repair Permissions) and one for AppleWorks (delete preferences). (Thanks to Barry for this way to format this very common answer.)
To Repair permissions, launch Disk Utility, found in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder, click on First Aid, then on Repair Permissions.
To delete AppleWorks’ preference files, go to HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences. Find and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist. Find and open the folder AppleWorks in this Preferences folder, then delete all of the enclosed files (with the exception of the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bars). AppleWorks will recreate the preference files as it needs them. Also, you need to delete the preferences after any crash of AppleWorks.
You may also have run into the "Recent Items bug" that has been around since AppleWorks 6 was released in March, 2000. It can make it appear that AppleWorks has frozen or failed to launch & can (rarely) cause crashing. The user tip by Dale Gillard, AppleWorks slow? Spinning ball appears?, explains a lot.

  • If iCal doesn't launch/display properly

Some general things to check for and do when iCal won't launch or doesn't display calendars/events/todos properly in Tiger. Try these things in order and make sure you understand each step fully before you start it :
    0.
    Backup your iCal data.
If you can, open iCal and go to the File menu and choose Back up Database... to save a copy of your calendar data to your Desktop, just in case something goes wrong.
(You should be doing this regularly anyway
    1.
Is the problem with the Application or your user's data?
Make a new user account on your computer, and log in as that user. Open iCal as the new user. If you are still having the same problems it is likely that the problem is with the application and you should re-install it, if not the problem is with the data and you should move on to step 2.
To re-install iCal you will need your Tiger installer disk. On the installer disk go to System> Installation> Packages> (you'll need to scroll down to see the System folder). In here there is iCal.pkg, double click this to install iCal.
If this fixes your problem there is no need to do the following.
    2.
    Refresh your preference files.
There are some preference files related to iCal in your user's Library > Preferences. These are called:
    com.apple.iCal.alarmsCache.plist
    com.apple.iCal.AlarmScheduler.plist
    com.apple.iCal.helper.plist
    com.apple.iCal.plist
Quit iCal and move these files to your desktop. When you start iCal they will be re-created in the Preferences folder with the default values as needed. This does not affect your calendar data, just preference choices.
You should go into iCal preferences and make any changes you want to your preferences after doing this.
If this solves your problem delete the copies on your Desktop, there is no need to do the following.
    3.
a: If iCal launches and you can see the calendar list:
    Check the calendars in turn.
In iCal uncheck all the calendars in the list. You can do this by Command-Clicking one calendar's check box.
Then do the following with each calendar in turn: Check the calendar's check box and see if your problems still exist. If iCal seems to be ok, then uncheck the check box and select the next calendar. If the symptoms still exist then this calendar is probably corrupted.
If you find a corrupted calendar in iCal, select it in the calendar list and from the File menu choose Export.. and export a copy of the calendar to your Desktop. Still in iCal, from the Edit menu choose Delete to remove the calendar from iCal. Then from the File menu choose Import... and select the 'Import an iCal file', find the calendar file you saved to your Desktop and import it.
    Go to step 4.
b: If iCal does not launch or you can't see the calendar list, it's a bit more involved:
Using the Finder to remove the data and replace it in turn.
Make sure iCal is not running, then go to your user's Library > Application Support > iCal> Sources folder, and copy this entire folder to your Desktop.
Go back to your user Library > Application Support> iCal> Sources. In this folder there will be one folder for each of your iCal calendars. These have long alpha-numeric names. Open these folders in turn and delete the file corestorage.ics in each one.
Open iCal. It should launch now, but there will be no events/todos and each calendar will have an exclamation mark by it.
Close iCal and repeat the following for each folder in iCal's Sources folder: (I found this easiest to do if you open both Sources folders next to each other in Finder's List View) From the copy you made to the Desktop, move the corestorage.ics file back into the correct folder in your Library> Application Support> iCal> Sources, and open iCal. If iCal is launching and functioning ok then the data in this calendar is good and you can move on to the next calendar.
If the symptoms you originally had have returned, then this calendar is corrupted.
With the corrupted calendar, move the relevant corestorage.ics file back to the correct sub-folder on your Desktop> Sources folder. In this folder will be a file called Info.plist. Open this file in a text editor, and look for the line that contains <key>Title</key>. The following line contains the title of the affected calendar between string tags (e.g. <string>Home</string>). Open iCal and with the calendar of this name, click the red exclamation mark and choose 'Reset' from the resulting dialog. Quit and re-open iCal. In iCal, make sure the same calendar is selected in the calendar list and drag the corestorage.ics file onto iCal's main window. (I got warning dialogs about unsafe alarms - I went with keeping the alarms.) This should clean up your calendar's data.
    4.
    Reset sync history.
If you have sync-ed your calendar data (either with .Mac iSync or third party apps.) there may be a corruption in the data stored by Sync Services which will be passed back into iCal when it syncs next.
Open iSync and from it's preferences select 'Reset Sync History' and in the confirmation dialog choose 'Reset Sync History' again.
I hope this will be of help to anyone having these types of problems. This (obviously) is not intended to be complete solution for every problem you'll come accross in iCal.
Please, feel free to post and correct my errors.
    Thanks
    John M

    Hi Nancy,
    > When I go into LIbrary>Application Support> there is now no ical.
Hmm, looks like you are having some problems there. (You are looking in the Library in your Home folder aren't you?) Were able to make a backup .icbu file as I suggested in point 0 above? If so you might want to open iCal and select File> Revert to Database Backup... and revert to the data you had before doing this, and start over again.
Otherwise, do a Spotlight search for 'iCal' and look at all the folders returned titled iCal. The most likely explanation is that you have inadvertently moved the iCal folder from your user's Library> Application Support to somewhere else on your harddrive. If this is so move it back.
Where exactly were you in the process? You say step 4, that is about re-setting iSync.
You say you moved the 'corestorage.ics' file to the Trash (and then emptied the Trash). Are there still corestorage.ics files in every folder in Sources on your Desktop?
    > I still have the sources file on my desktop.
Keep it there. You might want to re-name it 'Sources Old'.
    > when I click on the desktop sources folder and try and go into plist it is coming up as an itunes doc and attemptint to open with itunes
You seem to have plists associated with iTunes for some reason. To see the file's contents Control-Click one of the plist files and choose 'Open with' from the contexual menu and open it with TextEdit.
Please let me know how you get on.
    Best wishes

  • Ical will not launch (OS Mavericks)

    Hello
I am using OS Mavericks (10.9.1) on my 2009 MBP.  I tried opening iCal today (as I normally would, by clicking the icon in the dock).  The icon bounces once and nothing happens.  I tried finding a solution online. One user suggested removing the Preferences plist for ical, which I did. Still, iCal did not launch. Then, another user suggested removing ical and reinstalling.  As I have the disks for Snow Leopard, I reinstalled iCal.
When I try to launch iCal from the Application folder, I now receive the following message:  "You can't use this version of the application "iCal" with this version of OS X.  You have "iCal" 4.0."
Now what?  Any suggestions? Many thanks!

To clarify, if you're running Mavericks, there is no iCal. It was replaced by Calendar.
The Calendar app in Mavericks is not the same app as the iCal app in Snow Leopard. And, as you've already found out, the iCal app from Snow Leopard won't run in Mavericks.
If you deleted the Calendar app form Mavericks, the easiest way to get it back would be to re-install Mavericks. The correct app for Mavericks is Calendar (version 7.0).
You have also posted your question in the 10.7 Lion area instead of the Mavericks area.
I've requested the Moderator to move your post to the Mavericks area.

  • Address Book (and iCal) won't quit

Hi - I have a MacBook Pro Intel Core 2 Duo running OSX 10.4.11 (i know, i know i will get to leopard soon..) and recently Address Book and regularly iCal won't quit without being forced. There doesn't seem to be any problem operating either programs (though with iCal i have to re-adjust the frame size to see the entries) and Address Book updates up via iSync etc.. but it just won't quit.
    Anyone got any thoughts?
    Thanks,

    HI Michael,
Using your restore disk(s) you could use Software Restore from your Applications/Software Restore and reinstall iCal and Address Book. Launch Software Restore and just follow the onscreen instructions.

  • FCP 7 Won't Launch, used to

For some reason, FCP 7 won't launch any more. It did just a few days ago. Nothing has changed on my system. When I launch FCP, the startup screen comes up, showing what's loading. Then nothing. No FCP. Nothing showing in Activity Monitor. I can lauch DVDSP. Same result with FCP whether I launch the App or double clicking on an FCP project file. It starts to load, but never makes it.
I can't re-install FCS, since I'm not running Lion. I had brought FCP over from Snow Leopard.
I have FCP X installed. But FCP 7 ran fine a few days ago with X installed.
    I have tried:
    - Repair persmissions.
    - Trashing all FCP preferences.
    Any other suggestion?

Quadro 4000 (slave only, no monitor attached)

ok. i solved it.  i had changed the name in my apps folder to FCP 7.  i tried to software update and nothing happened. i removed the 7 from the name, software update updated to 7.0.3 and now it works again...  so who knows what happened?  hope this helps someone in the future...
