ICloud email address as Apple ID?

I ordered an iPad 2 recently. I also already have an iPhone 4. I updated both to iOS 5.0.1 and setup the iCloud. I would like to use iCloud email address as my primary email address. Since the iCloud email address I created already exists now, is there a way to delete my previous primary email address and have my Apple ID be using the created iCloud email? If so, how can I do that?

You can't use @me.com and @icloud.com emails as an Apple ID because Apple doesn't allow that, but you can add it as a secondary mail address

I have a problem. My Apple ID is not my iCloud email, my msn is my Apple ID, but I need to reset the password for my icloud email address because I can't remember what it is. How can do I reset my iCloud emaill password when it's not my Apple ID??

Your iCloud and @icloud.com login ID is an Apple ID. Go to http://appleid.apple.com and sign in with the ID you use to sign into iCloud (you can check this by going to http://www.icloud.com and signing in there).
Click 'Password & Security' in the sidebar and you will be able to change the password.
    HOWEVER
Before you do this you must turn off 'Find My iPhone/iPad/iMac' if you have it enabled on any of your devices, otherwise you will land yourself in difficulties.

  • HT5622 Why, in the name of all that is good and Holy, can I not make my iCloud email address my Apple ID?

I want to ELIMINATE Google. From my life. I don't need their mail, I don't need their maps. I don't need their productivity software, I don't need their apps. I don't want them crawling all my data when I search the web. I don't need their browser, I don't need their OS. I don't need their videos, I don't need their chat.
But guess what? My old Google email is my iCloud ID! F me right? So now I would have to reactivate my old Yahoo! account (imposible?) or create a new one (NOT) or add a new email to my personal website service (since my email for that is already another Apple/iCloud ID) because I can't use my iCloud.com email address as my Apple/iCloud ID. WHAT GIVES? Is it some sort of security thing? It doesn't make any sense! Has anyone else had this problem? Is this the reality, or am I missing something?

    Hi Powers,
Yeah, sorry about that.... Here's the scoop:
If, when you go to Manage your Apple ID, the Apple ID and the Primary email address
are on two separate lines, then you are good to go - just change the email address (that is how my old one is).
However, if it has the Apple ID/Primary email address both in the same box, you will  have to change it. So, if that is the case, your best bet is to get a new email address from whatever service you wish, then Edit your old Google Apple ID to the new email address. That will change the corresponding iCloud address at the same time, so you are basically only "updating" your Apple ID with a new valid email address.
Sorry about any confusion. My primary Apple ID is my @me.com one, and my other one is super old, so that is why it probably has the Primary email address as a separate field from the Apple ID.
Hope that this all makes sense. Post back if you have questions!
    Cheers,
    GB
P.S., I hope you don't want to kill me now....

  • Problem saving email preferences for new iCloud email address

I was trying to enter a new email address for iCloud in the Apple Mail program and after clicking save I receive the following message,"Writing your preferences to disk has failed. Your preferences may not have been saved. The permissions on ~/Library/Preferences may be wrong or your disk may be fullI'  I know the disk is not full on my new MacBook Pro. I went into LIbrary/Preferences but could not find the mail preferences.
The preferences have not been saved because every I time I start the computer the new email is missing from my email preferences.
    Thanks for your help.

While you can't currently change your Apple ID to a Mobile/iCloud email address, I found a solution that helps with a related problem.
Suppose you've recently got an iCloud email address, but Apple are still sending all your iTunes Store, App Store and Mac App Store receipts to your old gmail address (the one that's still your Apple ID). And suppose they're also sending all the Apple Support Communities notifcation emails to your old gmail address. How do you change it? How do you fix it?
Well the option exists, but it is hidden away in a weird place. To get Apple sending all of their receipts and notifications to your new iCloud email address...
    • Go to your country's Apple Store website http://store.apple.com/
    • Click on the Account button in the top-right corner
    • Under Account Settings, click on Change your default shipping or billing info
    • Sign in with your usual Apple ID and password
    • The email address listed under Payment Information is the key
    • Click on Edit next to Payment Information and change that email address to your iCloud address
That's all you have to do.

  • How do I create a new icloud email address for my apple id?

    Hi there
How do I create a new icloud email address for my apple id? My original email address is associated with my previous employers.
When I send email from my Macbook, it seems as if I still work there, which is a problem.
I would like to use the email address that I created for my iPad.
When I login with my appleid (for my macbook) I keep getting the old company one, not the new one.
Is there any way of resolving this? I

  • The email address used to Sign into my icloud is no longer active, this is different than my apple id email address though. How can I change my icloud email address to my current apple id email address

When I received my iphone 4s 3 years ago the my apple id and icloud email addresses were the same, it was a student email from the college I attended. This account is no longer active, but when I changed my apple id email address to a current email (gmail account) the icloud address didn't change over. I now have no ability to sign into icloud on my phone and icloud hasn't been updated in nearly a year. I wanted to figure out this problem before I upgraded to the Iphone 6 this December. Is there any way this is possible?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You should still be able to use your college email address, just log in with your details.

I want to use one of my icloud email addresses as a new apple ID.  It was an additional email contact address I originally set up for my child.  But now, I'd like to set her up on Family Sharing, using that email as her ID.  Obviously, when I try to use it when setting up a new apple ID, it says the email is already being used (Yes, by ME) and I need to select a different one.  Can I somehow delete that email address in order to set up a new apple ID using it?  Or is there another way to "re-use" that address for my child's new ID?

"Well, then I want to be able to merge that one and the one my purchases are on..."
This is exactly what I want to do but don't think I can:
    I noticed the following :
If you attempt to create an Apple ID which is the same as your @icloud email address from the online facility, it does not allow you (can't use an Apple associated email address as your Apple ID). However - if you start a fresh device - such as a new iPhone, iPad (must be mobile it seems), and then create an iCloud account and Apple ID from the prompts when setting up the mobile device, it IS possible to have your Apple ID and @iCloud email address as the same. I know because I just did it!
Unfortunately for me, the result I got above is not for one of my own ID's but a friends, and I would VERY much like to do the same - my current Apple ID is a completely different email address from my iCloud account. Trying to get them the same in my situation is a major bother - I think that if I wipe a device (such as an iPhone5 that is mine) and try to setup as I did my friend's device, then I will get a conflict because the iCloud email I have ALREADY exists. This is my worry and I will not attempt this until I get the new iPad 4 soon to test this.
There is an inconsistency here between the two methods of creating Apple ID's and iCloud accounts.
Overall in my opinion, the Apple ID system as currently available from Apple is not designed very well, and should be addressed.
    Best wishes -

  • I changed my email address and apple id a year ago, but do not know how to change my iCloud account

Hello! I changed my email address and apple id a year ago, but i am not sure how to change my icloud acccount information so it meshes with all my apple devices which include: an original ipad, iphone 4s, and my macbook pro. I keep seeing this message, " I cloud unable to access the account ( my old email address) Review your account information in your settings. OR it asks me for my old email address password, which i do not remember!
I would apprecaite any assistance anyone can provide. Thank you!

Sign out of the iCloud account (In System Preferences>iCloud)
Then sign back in with the correct ID and password.

  • I created an Apple ID for my daughter with her own gmail address, but I want her Apple ID and primary email address to be an iCloud email address. How can I do this? I can't set up an icould email address for her without first creating an Apple ID?

I have created an Apple ID for my daughter with her own gmail address as the primary email address, but I want her Apple ID and primary email address to be an iCloud email address. How can I do this? I can't set up an icould email address for her without first creating an Apple ID right?
I'm not good with computers so please explain in simple way...:)
I also wonder what the best way is to set up accounts for children in a family. I dont want them to be able to purchase apps etc through the parents accounts, also some things we like to share as a family and others we don't want to share. Is there any good. clear, simple explanation from Apple Support about these issues? Or best to go to Apple store and go to genius bar or one to one advise?
    thanks

You can set up an iCloud account which makes the iCloud email address you choose the Apple ID and thus the login for it:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/22283348#22283348
though I have to say I think it's more sensible if the ID is another address, both for security reasons (so people don't know what the login is) and as a contact address from Apple if the account were to stop working and they needed to contact you. So personally I would to to System Preferences, enter the GMail address which is an ID, and then choose a nerw @icloud.com address.
If she has her own iCloud account she will need either her own computer or her own user account on your Mac to be able to make use of it. You should note that under Apple's terms of use Apple IDs are only available to children of 13 and over.
As to purchasing apps, this is nothing to do with iCloud: it's iTunes, and the login can be different. So you can all sign into the same iTunes account but have different iCloud accounts. Or she can have her own iTunes account if she is of suitable age (credit card needed for purchasing apps).
If you have other children you should be aware that any one Mac or device can create only three iCloud accounts - this is tied to the serial number, not the user account, and once reached cannot be bypassed. You can of course sign into an iCloud account created on another device.

  • How do I move an iCloud email address to a different Apple ID

I have been previously using an iCloud email address with an Apple ID which is my parents. I now have a new device (new iPad for Christmas ) and am using my own Apple ID. I want to transfer the email address I previously had to my new ID so I own it, and can disable it on the other ID. It doesn't look like this is anywhere on the Apple support site and a web search hasn't led to anything.
I wonder if it would be possible to delete the email address from the previous account, and then register the name on my new one - i.e. just release and then reclaim it rather than transfer it.
I have been using the address for some services already so it would be really great if i could keep it exactly the same and not loose associations.
If anyone has any ideas I'd be grateful for the advice.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
Sorry that's not possible, you can't transfer the iCloud email address.

  • Is there a way to change the icloud email address associated with your Apple ID?

I had an Apple ID long before iCloud came around.  Naturally, my username was my email address, let's say [email protected]  I signed up for an @me email address when they started just to try it out, but never used it.  Either by default or by my own decision, my @me account became the same as my old email address: [email protected]  Later, Apple issued the @icloud email addresses, so I now have: [email protected] as well.  I want to set up a different icloud address, one that I would actually use, let's say [email protected]  Then, I would like to associate that address with my Apple ID and delete the oldaddress@icloud address altogether.  Can I do this and if so how?
    Thanks for the advice.

Since your Apple ID is already associated with the current iCloud account (and the account cannot be delete, it can only be abandoned), you can't use it to create another.  You would need to create a new Apple ID with a new non-Apple email address to create a new iCloud account.  You can still use your current ID for everything else; the iCloud ID does not need to be the same as the ID you use for other services (iTunes, etc.).
You would then have to migrate your iCloud data to the new account and turn on your iCloud data syncing.  When you turn Mail to On, you can create your new @icloud email address (but type carefully since once created it cannot be changed).  You @me iCloud email address would remain associated with the iCloud account you are leaving but it sounds like you don't want to use it anyway.  You can set up email forwarding to forwared email sent to your @me address to your new @icloud address while your contacts transition to your new address.
If that sounds like something you want to do, I can give you the steps to migrate your data to the new account.
