Icloud storage downgrade

I got an email from iCloud I guess that my cloud storage is going to be reduced from 25 gb to 5 gb.  I had paid for MobileMe so I don't know if thats how I got the extra storage on iCloud or what.
I don't how this all works to be honest with you.  I understood MobileMe cuz I could just go in and see what was on my iDisk.
This is what the "manage storage" thing on my iphone looks like:
my ipad back up is using 7.3 gb
Mail is using 32.6 mb
I don't even know what all this is.  I want to get my me.com mail on all my devices (iMac, iPhone and iPad).
I need to back up my iPad somewhere, can I back it up to itunes?
I guess i don't understand all this.  If I can't back my ipad up to the cloud where can I back it up to?
What is the "mail" in the cloud, my saved me.com mail?  I don't want to erase that.
I'm confused.

If you previously had MobileMe before it was terminated, then Apple gave you extra storage until Sept 30.  That storage is now going away.  You can pay to keep it or just let it lapse.  I believe the default is to downgrade you to the 5GB plan.
Go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Change Storage Plan>Downgrade Option.  Choose what plan you want after the current one expires.

    Contact AppleCare support at 800-694-7466, and tell them you want to get your icloud storage fee refunded.  The Advisors should be able to help with that.

    I got an email that my iCloud is going to be reduced to 5GB tomorrow.  I have the $100 50 GB plan, but renewing it does not seem to be an option. I have 36GB of information saved.  Do I have to downgrade to the 25GB plan (the largest downgrade offered) and delete 10GB of info?  Can I renew my 50 GB plan?  What will happen if I do nothing?

    I have a similar (though not identical) problem (and I've posted a question about it) but I was never a MobileMe customer.
    The full story is in the question I just posted.  The upshot is that (per email I received within the last half hour) Apple arbitrarily downgraded me to a 5 GB free account saying that I had requested it, even though in fact I had never requested it.  Quite the contrary, I had expected Apple to charge me for the full 15 GB option (for $20.00), which it did.  The charge appears on the bank card statement I just accessed online. But the Apple device currently erroneously reports that I had "exceeded" my free 5 GB (even though I should have 15 GB of paid storage).  Just to see if I could reset the device by upgrading to to the $20.00 plan (even though I really don't need to upgrade since I was already charged), I tried doing that via the storage menu under "Settings," but when I did that, the device showed that I was already on the $20.00 plan (contradicting the information on the earlier screen stating that I had exceeded the storage provisions of the free plan).
    I'm hoping for help from the Apple communities and I've also contacted Apple support asking them to call me later this morning.

    Apple has charged my account with an annual charge for a Storage Plan. I want to downgrade my service to a Free Plan (5Gb).
    I need to change/donwgrade on my account settings...which I have done.
    I also need to contact Apple Support within 15 days for a full refund.
    My question is, who do I contact? Are their any contact details available somewhere? I would prefer email support if possible.

    The downgrade takes effect one year after your storage upgrade was initially purchased.
    On your Mac
    Open iCloud preferences, then click Manage.
    Click Change Storage Plan (in the upper right).
    Click Downgrade Options, then choose the storage plan you’d like to have.

    No... the "done" button will not light up, and it says the iCloud manager is "not available at this time.  Try again later."  This is a known problem... fix it.

    Thank you Roger!  Going into my iTunes at least allowed me to delete my credit card info so they can't charge it.  In the meantime, after 2 calls I finally got connected to a Senior Advisor from Apple who was able to manually go into my account and remove the automatic charge to my credit card.  After sharing my screen, she was able to see the issue many others are having being unable to downgrade.  There is a bug in the system that tells you the manage storage is "unavailable at this time".  She followed me through several of these threads and realized it is actually an issue.  She took all the relevant information and will submit a bug fix request.  She even admitted that goal and apple were having an issue syncing to the correct time zone at that there was no know fix at this time.  While frustrating, the honesty was refreshing.
    Thank you SO much for you quick response on this!  My apologies for my tone; this was my first time using this forum.  I went through Apple support and didn't realize that there are no Apple employees on here.  I was on the line with someone from customer service that wasn't as helpful at the time and was very frustrated..
    Thanks again for your help!  To all others having this problem, keep calling Apple tech support until you get a Senior Advisor - they will help!!  The advisor even told me to tell people to call in and that they need to manually downgrade on their end until they get this issue resolved.

    Have you actually been charged? Did you convert from MobileMe?  If so, you'll be automatically put on that plan, but revert to the free one when your current one expires.

    have you already called Apple and explained your current situation, because I don't see a way to downgrade your storage plan with a Mac only running Snow Leopard and without a iOS device running at least iOS 5.

    I found the solution .,,,
    1) click on your current plan and press done your payment details will appear .
    2) the first section is your plan and there is a botton "change" click on it
    3) it will take you back to the upgrade options
    4) press on the downgrade options
    5) choose the 5 GB and the done botton will be enabled
    6) click on it  you'll back to the step number 2 , here read carefully you'll see that your changes will take effect after the current plan expired with the date.

    I tried this, a couple of times. On my iphone it basicly does noting after I press downgrade. ON my OSx the screen is locked and I cannot confirm the downgrade.
    This after such a nice mail send that the extra 10GB will have to be paid again and I can downgrade (using only 3 of 15 GB)
    Please inform me how to downgrade to the free storageplan of 5 GB.

    I've gone into the iCloud > Buy More Storage > Downgrade Options and after entering my password I received an email from Apple saying the following information for my Apple ID "id" was updated today: Phone Number(s). But I didn't change my phone number and the information currently saved for my phone number for my Apple ID is correct.
    Why would I get this email? I figure it must be some kind of bug considering the information is correct and it emailed me right after I entered my password in the iCloud section. (I'm not wanting to change my password.)

    The thread running through your explanation has to do with connectivity to your server. (iCloud out of the blue asking for password, unable to message your boyfriend, unable to access e-mail). You said that you boyfriend restart his device and then the two of you were able to then imessage. My best advice for you would be to go to settings to reset to reset network settings. Once this has been done you then will need to enter the name and password of your wifi. ONce this is done you then can attempt to check to see that all passwords are enter correctly.

    If you have given correct info about you ios 6.1.3 - all you need to do is delete account. You will be able to sign in with new one afterwards. Make sure you don't delete any info when you see those prompts.
