Icons do not show up on desktop

Hey everyone! I just updated to 10.5.6 to try to solve an issue I was having with 10.5.5 but to no avail. My desktop folder is has tons of photos and folders in it, but on the actual desktop I am not seeing icons to anything. Any idea why the desktop folder in finder would have items that do not show up on the desktop itself?

Updates never solve individual problems, only system wide and general issues. Problems should always be addressed immediately and no updates should be performed until the system is running properly.

IMO, the desktop is not the best place to store things. It is a unique directory with special properties. Mine is empty.
If you right-click the desktop and select "New Folder" does it appear?
If you see files in the Desktop directory in Finder but they are not visible on the GUI, they may be hidden files.
Right-click one of them in Finder and Get Info. Look at permissions.
You should also run the DU and repair permissions and HD to be sure nothing is basically wrong with the OS.
Create a new user and add some desktop items and see if the desktop items appear.

Macintosh HD icon missing / not showing up on desktop

Suddenly my boot drive HD (Macintosh HD) icon is missing. In Volumes I can find an alias of my HD but not on my desktop.
I switched the option for "show HD icons on desktop" off and on in Finder options but boot drive not visible while other volumes visibility is switching fine off and on.
I repaired disk permissions but no change.

USB Drive and iPod do not show up on desktop

Hello,
I put the computer to sleep when I'm going to be away for awhile and overnight. When I come back and wake it, my USB drive does not appear on the desktop. I have to restart the iMac to get it to come back.
Also, when I plug my iPod in, iTunes updates it and then within 10 minutes, the icon does not show on the desktop but I can see the iPod in iTunes.
Any ideas?

I did run the hardware test and everything passed.
For about 3 hours last night, everything was working fine. This morning the USB drive icon is there but not the iPod. I think I will try the OS reinstall but not for about a week. I will be out of town all next week and can't get to it before I leave.
Something may have gone wacky while loading some application. A couple of the suspects would be Adobe Lightroom beta 4 or Google Earth. This issue only started within the last 5 days or so and I think those are the only applications I've loaded in that time.
Thanks for the help in eliminating some of the culprits. I think the OS install should fix. If not, it may be time to have Apple take a look.

Hard Drive Icon Not Showing Up on Desktop

Hey folks, this might be a very very noobish question, but I guess I'm fairly new to OSX...
My Hard Disk Drive icon is not showing up on my desktop for some reason...if I open a New Finder Window, I can't see it on the upper left hand quadrant in columnar view, but I can get to all the shortcut folders in the lower left hand quadrant (Applications, Documents, Movies, etc.), but can't navigate to the root directory unless I use Terminal (yup, I'm root user).
When I go into Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app) then I can see the drive itself as well as the Windows partition I created for Bootcamp purposes. I tried Verify Drive and Verify Permissions to see if there were some weird problems with the drive itself but both came back perfect, and still no HDD icon on the desktop.
I have a feeling it's just some weird setting I may have inadvertently tweaked, so any feedback, advice, or information on how to get it back would be very welcome and appreciated. In case it's any help, here is the HDD Information from Get Info:

Thanks ElBiggus, I neglected to add that I had already done this. "Hard disks" is checked, as is "CDs, DVDs, and iPods", as well as "Connected Servers".
If I drop down the "New Finder windows open:" menu, I see "Home", "Documents", "Computer", "iDisk" (greyed out), and "Untitled", which is my Windows partition.

AirPlay icon is not showing up on either of my ipads.

I just got Apple TV today. Was excited to use airplay and the icon does not show up on either of my iPads. I have looked through all of the troubleshooting. Everything is wirelessly connected to my same home Internet. All devices are updated, I rebooted both iPads and the router. It will work on iTunes on my desktop but not the iPads. I even turned off the fiirewall. I am super frustrated at this point for spending all of this money and it doesn't work!! Please help me if you can!!

Have you activated restrictions for the app in Settings/General/Restrictions?

I connected to my Macbook Pro with the USB connector that came with my new iphone a few weeks ago. This morning when I tried to connect and download music, my device icon does not appear on my desktop or in the itunes left nav bar. Anyone else have this issue?

Your iPhone should never appear on your desktop - the iPhone does not support disk use, so it cannot be mounted like an external disk or an iPod with disk use enabled.
However, it should show up in the devices list in iTunes.
First, do you have another dock cable to try? Any USB dock cable from a recent iPod will work. If that doesn't help, try re-installing iTunes (just download it from here and run the install, no need to uninstall anything). If that doesn't correct the issue, you may need to remove and reinstall AMDS:

An add-on can put its icon on the bar automatically if it likes, but some add-ons do one of the following:
* Add an item to the Tools menu
* Add an item to the right-click menu (depending on the context)
* Put a button in the button palette so you can add it to a toolbar if you like (''to call up the button palette, use'' View > Toolbars > Customize ''or right-click a blank area after the address box on the Navigation Toolbar and choose Customize from the pop-up menu'')
Also, you might want to double-check that the add-on is enabled.
Tools > Add-ons > Extensions
If you have the orange Firefox button, it's Firefox > Add-ons > Extensions
Does that help? (If you have problems with a particular extension, you could mention which one it is for more specific comments.)

Network drives do not show up on Desktop or in Sidebar

I have a user who is experiencing a weird problem. When they connect to a Windows server over our LAN, the server does not show on their desktop, nor does it show in the sidebar.
I have checked the boxes in Finder/Preferences to show network drives on the desktop and in the sidebar, but the network drives do not show up.
I have reproduced this on another Mac, a G4 also running 10.5.8 .
The windows servers do appear in Go/Network, and the user can connect to them, but they still don't show up on the desktop or the sidebar.
Does anyone have any good ideas about this?

I'm beginning to wonder if there might be some issue with this in 10.5.8, since this works on the Macs here with Snow Leopard, and it used to work when we had Macs on earlier versions of OS X.
Again, I'm open for any ideas on this.

To check your model go to About This Mac (by clicking on the Apple icon, top left) and then select more info. If you wish to use mirroring you will need one from 2011 or later running OSX 10.8 or later. The alternative would be to use 3rd party software like Airparrot.

i have a macbook pro (almost positive that its a 2010 version) and i got mountain lion. The BIGGEST AND MAIN REASON i bought mountain lion was so that i can do airplay, allowing me to mirror image what is on my mac to my Apple TV. my whole computer is updated as far as the displays and newer features but the small airplay icon will not show up on the top of my screen. therefore, not allowing me to mirror image what is on my mac to my tv... it is connected to the same wifi as my apple tv. idk what to do. could it be because my macbook pro is a 2010? desprately looking for help...please help me with this issue

Finally after trying to uninstall/reinstall (no luck!)
I'm on Windows 7 64 bit. iTunes 10.7 And I have a solution:
If found a thread about IPv6.
I followed the same directions on Windows 7 64 bit and it worked.
Disable IPv6 on _all_ of your IP ethernet adapters.
That includes Virtual Machines (VMWare... yes those too), including IPv6 for wireless.
Close iTunes. Start iTunes. Works. Airplay Icon is back.
It looks like All of the AirPlay devices may have to be re-setup. At the very least rebooted.
I found that I had to clompletely erase my DHCP addresses from my (non Apple) router.. and that fixed it. Finally.
