Icons not showing up on desktop...
Hi,
I've encountered what seems to be an intermittent, though frequent, problem with Leopard. When saving items to the desktop, or when mounting external drives, the icons do not always appear there. However, when I look at the desktop's contents via a finder window, the files/drives are shown as there. This isn't a terrible problem--the icons usually show up when I relaunch the finder--but it is annoying and a bit unnerving.
Anyone have any idea what might be the problem, or know of a solution?

TinkerTool isn't exactly a system-altering application: it is basically a GUI front end for writing to the "Mac OS X user defaults system", better known as preference files (plists).
As the manual page explains, not all preference settings are accessible through an application's Preferences panel. For example, Finder supports a preference for displaying all files, including those that are normally hidden, but you won't find that setting anywhere in Finder's Preferences tabs. To set it, you could use the appropriate 'defaults write' command in Terminal, but TinkerTool (& a few other utilities) simplify the process to marking a checkbox in the utility's user interface.
So, even if you have never used the utility, it is possible the hidden preference to disable the desktop features has somehow been set in Finder's plist file. I'm pretty sure TinkerTool would show this (the checkbox for this option would be marked) & if so, you could just uncheck it & relaunch Finder for the change to take effect. Otherwise, you might have to trash the plist file, loosing any Finder preferences you have set (including view options, icon arrangements, etc.) when this causes a new plist file to be created with the default, new user settings.
If you want to try this, I recommend TinkerTool over other similar utilities for several reasons: it was the first of its kind, it is well regarded, it has been updated for Leopard, & most importantly, it is very conservative -- most of the other utilities offer additional options & features, not all of which are undoable or without undesirable side effects. Plus, it is 100% freeware.

Hard Drive Icon Not Showing Up on Desktop
Hey folks, this might be a very very noobish question, but I guess I'm fairly new to OSX...
My Hard Disk Drive icon is not showing up on my desktop for some reason...if I open a New Finder Window, I can't see it on the upper left hand quadrant in columnar view, but I can get to all the shortcut folders in the lower left hand quadrant (Applications, Documents, Movies, etc.), but can't navigate to the root directory unless I use Terminal (yup, I'm root user).
When I go into Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app) then I can see the drive itself as well as the Windows partition I created for Bootcamp purposes. I tried Verify Drive and Verify Permissions to see if there were some weird problems with the drive itself but both came back perfect, and still no HDD icon on the desktop.
I have a feeling it's just some weird setting I may have inadvertently tweaked, so any feedback, advice, or information on how to get it back would be very welcome and appreciated. In case it's any help, here is the HDD Information from Get Info:

If I drop down the "New Finder windows open:" menu, I see "Home", "Documents", "Computer", "iDisk" (greyed out), and "Untitled", which is my Windows partition.
This is a very strange one...can't seem to figure it out -
Install upgrade icon not showing up on desktop?
i'm trying to upgrade my ibook os 10.2.8 to tiger 10.4, but the initial install icon is not even popping up to click on to initate the process. i restarted the computer, but still no icon to hit and get the ball rolling.
anyone have any ideas? any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

iBook Snow Mac OS X (10.2.x)i did what you said: the cd is in, i restarted it, depressed c (except for when i put in my password and shortly thereafter as i get the mad drum pounding error sound) and kept holding while all of my other desktop icons came up. still no install disc icon or window, though.

USB Drive and iPod do not show up on desktop
Hello,
I put the computer to sleep when I'm going to be away for awhile and overnight. When I come back and wake it, my USB drive does not appear on the desktop. I have to restart the iMac to get it to come back.
Also, when I plug my iPod in, iTunes updates it and then within 10 minutes, the icon does not show on the desktop but I can see the iPod in iTunes.
Any ideas?

BradI did run the hardware test and everything passed.
For about 3 hours last night, everything was working fine. This morning the USB drive icon is there but not the iPod. I think I will try the OS reinstall but not for about a week. I will be out of town all next week and can't get to it before I leave.
Something may have gone wacky while loading some application. A couple of the suspects would be Adobe Lightroom beta 4 or Google Earth. This issue only started within the last 5 days or so and I think those are the only applications I've loaded in that time.
Thanks for the help in eliminating some of the culprits. I think the OS install should fix. If not, it may be time to have Apple take a look. -

An add-on can put its icon on the bar automatically if it likes, but some add-ons do one of the following:
* Add an item to the Tools menu
* Add an item to the right-click menu (depending on the context)
* Put a button in the button palette so you can add it to a toolbar if you like (''to call up the button palette, use'' View > Toolbars > Customize ''or right-click a blank area after the address box on the Navigation Toolbar and choose Customize from the pop-up menu'')
Also, you might want to double-check that the add-on is enabled.
Tools > Add-ons > Extensions
If you have the orange Firefox button, it's Firefox > Add-ons > Extensions
Does that help? (If you have problems with a particular extension, you could mention which one it is for more specific comments.) -
External device icon not showing
i am using a MacBook 10.5.8
The " icon " for the external device " Hard Drive " manufactured by Sea Gate will not show.
Does any one know of words to search for ? while the external device has only shown a icon.
I have gone into Terminal to look at " ps -ax " and thought maybe connected device`s might show up there.
the procedure that i go thru to access the external device is, plug it into the machine and then plug in its power source.
The device is operating , by what feels like a vibratory feeling vie the human paw grasping it , the external HD.
i do not want to just unplug it "thinking" that, that would re set it, i have read in past posts that to just unplug could damage the integrity of the data in the external HD.

If it has not mounted (i.e it is not showing on the desktop) unplugging it will not interrupt any potential writes to the hard drive as it is not functioning, so that won't harm it.
Before you remove it, try logging out and logging back in again as that can often re-establish a connection.
You don't say if it is USB or Firewire, but I have found on occasion that a firewire connected hard drive that does not show on the Desktop, can be remedied, by disconnecting the drive and completely switching the Mac off and even removing the mains power cable and let it sit for 5 minutes. Doing this can reset the Firewire port.
After restart, plugging the firewire ext. drive back shows up.
EDIT: The above assumes the disk is sound, ie, you know it works.

Network drives do not show up on Desktop or in Sidebar
I have a user who is experiencing a weird problem. When they connect to a Windows server over our LAN, the server does not show on their desktop, nor does it show in the sidebar.
I have checked the boxes in Finder/Preferences to show network drives on the desktop and in the sidebar, but the network drives do not show up.
I have reproduced this on another Mac, a G4 also running 10.5.8 .
The windows servers do appear in Go/Network, and the user can connect to them, but they still don't show up on the desktop or the sidebar.
Does anyone have any good ideas about this?

I'm beginning to wonder if there might be some issue with this in 10.5.8, since this works on the Macs here with Snow Leopard, and it used to work when we had Macs on earlier versions of OS X.

Hard drive not showing up on desktop
My hard drive is not showing up on desktop. Hardisc repair says drive is not formatted yet would not format drive or failed after initial attempt. I did put the same drive into USB external case and then it showed up on desktop. I then was able to format disc and install OS 9.2 onto disc but when I reinserted disc into Lombard (Powerbook G3 M5343) it was back to not appearing and identifying disc as not formatted.
When I turn on -getting a prompt that says built in memory test says there is something wrong with memory cashe could this have something to do with problem?
I don't think there is a problem with Motherboard as I just replaced it. I also don't think it is the drive cable as it identifies drive and also I have a "spare-parts" Lombard with a defective motherboard and I tried attaching drive with that drive cable and still had the same problem. Unless both drive ribbons are defective -I assume not...but maybe that could be the problem?

You do have a failure of the backside L2 cache, a common problem on the Lombard. This memory is soldered to the microprocessor card and the only fix is a replacement card.

I don't know if the failed L2 cache memory would cause a problem with the HD on the internal IDE bus controller; it apparently does not via the USB bus.
Generally, users who have the failed L2 cache do not have a successful startup unless they reset the power manager. Try this: With the Lombard turned off, reset the power manager and see if it will start up to the internal HD. If no success, shut down, insert your OS 9.2 CD, reset the power manager, and see if the HD appears on the desktop after booting to the CD. -
Why are my files not showing up on desktop?
I was running several programs on my macbook air: iChat, iCal, Mail, Word for Mac, Safari, and Finder. In Safari, I would right click on any file (word, powerpoint, pdf, etc) to download it to desktop as I normally would. All goes well until I actually go to desktop and see nothing. The file does not show in my desktop. I go into finder, pull up the desktop folder and the file is there. Here's the catch: files downloaded to desktop from other sessions show up in both locations (actual desktop and desktop folder in finder) but the new ones do not. Forcing all my programs to quit doesn't help, only restarting the system does and then the files show up in my actual desktop as opposed to only the desktop folder. I feel like this is rare and only happens when I have iChat open in addition to other programs (although I'll be doing more tests to confirm). I'm running the latest OS (Lion) on a Macbook Air. Anyone else seeing this issue or know what's going on?

I installed a new hard drive on my mac book pro and it is not showing on the desktop
Installed a new SSD hard rive because the old one died. It is not showing in my desktop so I can transfer my files ( decided not to use time machine but to transfer manually.
On the preferences window, the startup disk is showing with a question mark but when I click on it, it shows the hard drive , which has already been initialized and the OSX ( Mavericks) installed."it shows macintosh HD OSX 10.9.5 but the hard drive that is supposed to be in the upper right corner is not showing up. So it is booting from that drive."
Ok go to "Finder" preferences and make sure the "Hard disk" box is checked.
That will make your boot disk show up in the upper right corner. You can tell it's a boot disk because all the files will look like this instead of just being blank files. -

Hold down the mouse button while restarting. This should eject any disc in the drive. -

2. Within icons i made a jar file of all gif images :-

3. Copy this new jar file into :-
