Idvd 08 encoding

My idvd only lets me encode files as best performance instead of professional quality which takes up less space. Usually i wouldn't mind except i now have to buy more expensive dvd's that hold more capacity and ideas on how to burn at high or professional quality

im aware of the different timing and for all my videos over 60 minutes when i try to do high quality or best performance so that my 4 gig discs work with it the progress bar and name at the very bottom is grayed out where as when using best performance it shows progress and is black. The disc also ejects, is their a setting I can change to fix this

  • Does iDVD encode dvd's with a particular region on them?

I have relatives in Mexico who I would like to share some dvd's with, but I'm concerned about their dvd players which are typically region 4. Will iDVD encode dvd's with a particular region?

No, DVDs made on your Mac are 'region 0' which mean they will play anywhere. Nor will they attempt to change the region code on a Mac.
Of more concern to you if whether Mexico (Region 4) uses NTSC the same as the US (Region 1). It does!

  • Differences between iDVD encoder settings

    Greetings,
OK, I looked in the forums, Pogue and Miller's iMovie'09 and iDVD book, and on the Web, and haven't found a satisfactory answer.
There are three options: Best Perf., Hi Quality, and Professional Quality.
On the iDVD help page (the same can be found at http://support.apple.com/kb/PH5417) it says, and I am paraphrasing and summarizing:
BP: Background processing available. Good for up to 1-hr videos, and quality will be excellent. preset bit rate. Use HQ or PQ for longer video.
HQ: This is the _best encoding option_ [my emphasis] for videos between 1 and 2 hours long. [OK so far.] (iDVD book and Apple disagree on bit rate; the former says VBR, while Apple seems to imply CBR.)
PQ: uses advanced technology, resulting in the _best quality of video possible_ [again, my emphasis]. Select for projects of up 2 hours duration. Time-consuming.
OK. so what's the deal here?
    1) HQ and PQ can't both be best. Or is HQ best as a compromise of some sort, in which case it should specify it?
    2) What are the differences for videos of less than 1 hour? Seems to me that you can't improve on the BP setting in this case. IOW, is there any point using HQ or PQ for videos of less than 1 hour?
    3) For videos of 1 to 2 hours, does PQ always give better results than HQ?
    So, is the following right:
    A) For videos of less than 1 hour: use BP, as the others won't improve anything.
    B) For videos between 1 and 2 hours: PQ will give better quality than HQ, but it will take a lot longer to burn the DVD, and BP won't fit.
    Thanks!
    AEF

    About so.
iDVD 08, 09 & 11 has three levels of qualities. (version 7.0.1, 7,0.4 & 7.1.1) and iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - BEST (but not always for short movies e.g. up to 45 minutes in total)
    • Best Performances
(movies + menus less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD (Can be best for short movies)
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6)
(movies + menus up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
Menu can take 15 minutes or even more - I use a very simple one with no audio or animation like ”Brushed Metal” in old Themes.
    About double on DL DVDs.
    BUT -
THE TIME is not just the Movie Duration ! ! !
IT IS - Movie time PLUS Menu time !
And Menu can take 15 minutes (or even more from Movie time)
    • Using an elaborated Menu with Sub-menus and Animation (playing buttons) and Audio - Can take a lot of TIME
I use an as simple one possibly - most often "Brushed Metal" from Old Themes - NO animation - NO Audio and this takes less than 1 minute. Resulting in about 59 minutes to my movie.
    THEN
I think that I get best possibly result with Best Performances if movie is less than 45 minutes and for all that's more I use the Professional Qualit.

  • IDVD encoding errors when attempting to burn slide show to DVD.

iDVD fails to burn disk and fails with encoding error.  Have attempted to use best, good, and professional modes of encoding to no avail.

    Hi Patrick,
Welcome to Apple Discussions. I see you're a new member. Hope you're enjoying your new Mac Pro. What are you trying to burn to exactly?  I use Verbatim Dvd-R with excellent results. If you are using a higher quality media like Verbatim, Maxell, or Taiyo Yuden but to no avail then I need to ask if you have first tried making a disc image from the file menu in iDvd and then playing back said image with apple's dvd player app (prior to burning to Dvd-R).
This approach helps us narrow down the issue so we can better assist you.

  • IMovie-iDVD encoding error

    Hi All,
Same story/different plot involving "there was an error during movie encoding". I made an iDVD from iMovie clips and extra .mp3 music clips. This DVD got burned and worked first time around. Then the DVD got a scratch and won't play from a certain point forward.
So when I resurrected the iDVD project, iMovie files, music, etc. it no longer works. Now it just says "there was an error during movie encoding". I'm not missing pieces of the puzzle because when I preview the project in iDVD, all the music, etc. is in place.
I have gone through the discussions over and over and changed things like clicking on and off "encode in background", changed from NTSC to PAL, deleted encoded assets, etc. The only effect these solutions have had is cycling through the movie longer but still eventually popping up the error message.
Unfortunately because I had already made the DVD, I had put it onto my external harddrive, so now I can't find my original iMovie project to re-export it to iDVD (even though the project is obviously somewhere).
Extra details: buring on a double-layer disc, project size 4.56GB, 21GB available on hard drive, using iDVD 7.1.2, Mac OS 10.6.8, 3GB RAM, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.
Any advice would be super helpful, it's almost more frustrating to know it worked before, but not anymore.
    Thanks!

So when I resurrected the iDVD project, iMovie files, music, etc.
Did you make any edits to the project before trying to reburn it?  If so that creates a problem with iDVD preventing a successful encode.  It's best to start over with a new project and add the media, i.e. movies, stills, etc., again.
Then follow this workflow to help ensure the best quality final product:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the  File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option.  This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
Will the DVD disk play on your Mac with DVD Player?  Sometimes the Mac is more forgiving than set top DVD players.  If you can try to create a disk image of the DVD disk with Disk Utiltiy.  If you can then play it with DVD Player to make sure it plays thru completely.  If that's successfull then you can burn a new disk with Disk Utility.

  • Do i have to let idvd encode assets before i burn a disk image?

I never really noticed this before, but when I go to Project Info, it tells me that my assets are encoding. Do I have to wait for this to happen before burning a disk image, or does it encode the assets while I'm burning a disk image?
    Thanks,
    Bob

If you have selected BEST Peformance encoding, you have an option to have your content encoded in the background as you work on the project, saving you a little time.
In any event, all encoding must take place before iDVD can burn to a DVD disc or write a disk image file.  This happens when you tell iDVD to "Burn".

  • Chapter markers causing iDVD encoding error

    TIP:
I discovered that the text used for a chapter marker in FCE can cause the DVD encoding in iDVD to fail. I kept getting encoding errors at the end and tried multiple fixes without success.
The solution was to remove the apostrophe that was inserted into one of the chapter marker names. The encoding worked at the next attempt.
Moral of the story - change the text in iDVD and not in FCE (or at least be careful in FCE).
    Cheers!
    David

    Peter,
    Welcome to the iDVD forum!
Make sure all your iMovies have sound tracks.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301876
And I'd try creating a new user and see if that user can successfully burn the project. You will need to move the project and assets to a public folder.
Make sure you have 20GB free on your startup drive.

  • HT201404 iDVD encoding error!

I have followed advice from Apple support of ensuring iDVD is open & a new project created before sharing slideshow from iPhoto.
I was hopeful that the issue would be fixed as the encoding time reduced, however I still get the encoding error after about 2 hours.
Sharing iPhoto slideshows to iDVD & then burning has worked many times for me in the past.
Size is well under DVD capacity.  Nothing unusual about the slideshow.

    Hi
Just for info. You are aware about
    • Limit of No: of photos in SlideShow function in iDVD (99 max per show) (you can have 99 shows too)
    • that iDVD doesn't care about space as in GBs - but only in time = duration of movies/shows + menu

  • IDVD Encoding Error on Menu in Snow leopard 10.6 - Not replicated in 10.5.8

    Hi All,
Why would iDVD have fail at the start of encoding MP4 files in snow leopard 10.6.?1 But the same project encodes with no problems or errors in OS 10.5.8? Is this a bug? Any ideas?
    Thanks

I have the same issue. Same mouse. Its definitely snow leopard. I have 2 macbooks that use that mouse that were upgraded to snow leopard from leopard. On one of them I had deleted the mouse and encoutered the same errors trying to add it - it worked on my other machine. But then as a test (bad idea) I deleted it off the other machine and was also unable to recreate the connection thereby narrowing the issue to snow leopard. I have tried pretty much everything for hours. Deleting pllist file, smc reset, nvram etc... I think I have to wipe off the machine and install leopard again and start from there

  • Idvd encoding problem

now im trying to create a dvd that totals in 151 mins and 8.27 gb. i also went out and purchased some double layer blank dvd's but i am still getting a "your project exceeds the maximum content duration. to burn your DVD, change the encoder setting in the project info window." can someone help me figure out why this wont work because i have more than enough room.

The 8.27GB is meaningless - it's the time - 151 minutes - that counts in iDVD.
151 minutes will require the use of a double layer DVD as well as selecting either 'High Quality' or 'Professional Quality' encoding. 'Best Performance' won't work.

  • IDVD Encoding/Rendering Error

I've started having a problem burning dvds from iMovie using iDVD. PowerMac G5, 10.4.11, iDVD 6.0.4 and iMovie 6.0.3.
About 60% through the Menu rendering, I get the folllowing Error message:
"Error during rendering/encoding, there was an error during rendering/encoding of the menu/slideshows. Burning process cancelled."
I logged into a different account and it worked fine. Back in the original account, I trashed the iDVD plist but to no avail. I still get the error. I've also used Onyx to repair permissions and optomize the system, but the problem still persists.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

An internet connection makes updating your mac so much easier. I wish I had a dollar for every time I found separate user accounts on the same machine acting completely different from one another .... more times than I can shake a stick at.
I'm currently running iLife'09 on this particular mac so I can't be of much help for iDvd6 updates at this moment.
I'm guessing the most current version is iDVD 6.0.4
Is this what you run on all your macs?

  • Another tip for working around iDVD encoding errors: Use internal drive

I've had several projects that produced the encoding error while rendering the menus, I've also seen a number of tips in this discussion area, e.g., have 20 GB of free space, delete iDVD preferences,  delete encoded assets, and make sure your chapter markers are not near a transition or end of a  clip (good luck with that using iDVD to set your chapters).  Neither of these tips alone allowed me to burn a disk image to disk, but I'm confident they contribute to a more stable iDVD performance overall.
In my case, the only way I've managed to make the projects to work is to copy the iMovie project over to my internal drive, create the iDVD project on the internal drive and to save the disk image to the internal drive.
If you're low on internal disk space, as I am, easy to move assets is another advantage of using iMovie 6 over iMovie 8, i.e., you can create the iMovie project on the external drive and then drag a temporary copy over to the internal drive, then you can launch iDVD from within iMovie 6 without the annoying step of exporting to the Media Browser. When you're done, delete the temporary movie to free up space for your next project. The iDVD projects can also be moved to a backup drive or deleted.

You'll always get better results on the startup volume / internal HD (as opposed to an ext. HD) provided you also have at least 20GB's of available HD space remaining. Anything less is often problematic at best.
My suggestion in this situation is to find a way to clear more HD space. You can clear video files already burned to DVD-R media, burn your iPhoto Library to DVD to clear more space , or even consider clearing languages you won't need on your system with an app like Monolingual. No problems will be created by removing unneeded language files (however it's highly recommend you avoid removing architectures on any intel mac).

  • Stutter in Idvd encoded video

    Hello
I have been trying to make an iDVD which is 16:9. I have exported some HD video, which is half size (960 by 540). The program works with that fine in authoring... I am using iDVD because of the menu templates.
    The problem is:
When I encode the video and make the dvd, choosing "professional" mode... The disc image or video folder output will play back as "choppy" or "stuttering". The video source is fine I know... But after DVD encoding, the pans and zooms look very bad for stutter.
I have shot the video in 30fps, so there should not be a frame rate conversion conflict. Is there any other way I should be outputting the video for widescreen use in idvd, as to why this is occurring? Is there something in Idvd I am not doing right? The options are limited so I kind of doubt that.

    Hi
    My general list
    • see point 4 (free space)
    • DVD brand and type
    • Burn speed - set down (x4 for some - x1 for me)
    *DVD quality*
    1. iDVD 08 & 09 has three levels of qualities.
iDVD 6 has the two last ones
    • Professional Quality (movies up to 120 min.) - BEST
    • Best Performances (movies less than 60 min.) - High quality on final DVD
    • High Quality (in iDVD08 or 09) / Best Quality (in iDVD6) (movies up to 120 min.) - slightly lower quality than above
    2. From
    • FCE/P - Export out as full quality QuickTime.mov (not selfcontaining, no conversion)
    • iMovie x-6 - Don't use ”Share/Export to iDVD” = destructive even to movie project and especially so
when the movie includes photos. Instead just drop or import the iMovie movie project icon (with a Star on it) into iDVD theme window.
    • iMovie’08 not meant to go to iDVD. Go via Media Browser or rather use iMovie HD 6 from start.
    3. I use Roxio Toast™ to make an as slow burn as possibly eg x1 (in iDVD’08 or 09 this can also be set)
This can also be done with (Apple) Disk Util tool.
    4. There has to be about or more than 25Gb free space on internal (start-up) hard disk. iDVD can't
use an external one as scratch disk (if it is not start-up disc).
    5. Verbatim ( also recommended by many - Taiyo Yuden DVDs - I can’t get hold of it to test )
    6. DVD-R (no +R or +/-RW)
    7. Keep NTSC to NTSC - or - PAL to PAL when going from iMovie to iDVD
    8. Don’t burn more than three DVD at a time - but let the laser cool off for a while befor next batch.
    iDVD quality also depends on.
    • HOW much free space is there on Your internal (start-up) hard disk. Go for approx 25Gb.
less than 5Gb and Your result will most probably not play.
    • What kind of movie project You drop into it. MPEG4 seems to be a bad choice.
other strange formats are .avi, .wmv, .flash etc. Convert to streamingDV first
Also audio formats matters. I use only .aiff or from miniDV tape Camera 16-bit
strange formats often problematic are .avi, .wmv, audio from iTunes, .mp3 etc
Convert to .aiff first and use this in movie project
    • What kind of standard - NTSC movie and NTSC DVD or PAL to PAL - no mix.
(If You need to change to do a NTSC DVD from PAL material let JESDeinterlacer3.2.2 do the conversion)
(Dropping a PAL movie into a NTSC iDVD project
(US) NTSC DVDs most often are playable in EU
(EU) PAL DVDs most often needs to be converted to play in US
UNLESS. They are plabacked by a Mac - then You need not to care
    • What kind of DVDs You are using. I use Verbatim DVD-R (this brand AND no +R or +/-RW)
    • How You encode and burn it. Two settings prior iDVD’08 or 09
Pro Quality (only in iDVD 08 & 09)
Best / High Quality (not always - most often not)
Best / High Performances (most often my choise)
    1. go to iDVD pref. menu and select tab far right and set burn speed to x1 (less errors = plays better) - only in iDVD 08 & 09
    2. Project info. Select Professional Encoding - only in iDVD 08 & 09.
    Region codes.
iDVD - only burn Region = 0 - meaning - DVDs are playable everywhere
DVD Studio pro can set Region codes.
    1 = US
    2 = EU

  • IDVD encoding causes system failure during burn process

I have iDVD 5 on my work computer (dual 2.7Ghz G5 / 2.5 G RAM), and have burned successfully before my current project.
My current project has a 28:45 movie and I have tried two different themes with different combinations of drop zones (one with the movie as the drop zone and one with stills only) and everything previews okay, but when I start the burn process it will get to a certain point in the encoding and then the whole system crashes. I come back to check on the process, and my screen is filled with black squares with error info in it... (looks like a DOS screen or something) and it says something about system failure and that I need to restart my computer.
I'm so stubborn that I keep trying different combinations of possibilities but I'm having no luck. The movie that it's hangin up on was captured in Final Cut Pro from a VHS, edited in Final Cut to trim the excess black, and exported as a Final Cut Movie that I imported into iDVD.
As I said above, I have burned successfully on this computer and this iDVD, so the fact that this one project refuses to burn is perplexing.
    any thoughts?

A gap in video would be a space between one clip and another. This is a problem when you are editing your footage, not capturing it. In other words, it is a user introduced problem.
In FCP when you say "Ignore Timecode Breaks" it just means to continue capturing video even if there is a timecode break. If you do not select this option, FCP would immediately stop catpturing whenever it hit a timecode break. A timecode break is not the same thing as a gap you create during editing. A timecode break could be as simple as rewinding your camera footage and then recording over it... the timecode now has a break because it is not continuous timecode, it jumps from one timecode to another.
Depending on what device you are capturing from, your audio may come in a few frames before or after the video. This would be especially true for a non-controllable device. It is a simple fix to adjust this as you would have noticed any sync issues right in the timeline during playback.
A system reboot in the middle of encoding is a serious crash... I doubt if it is the footage per se that is causing this to happen. Footage has been known to force an application to abort a process (or stay in an infinite loop), but an actual system shutdown would be extremely rare.
Consider recapturing the footage into a new FCP project and then creating a new iDVD project for it, this will eliminate either a corrupted FCP file or an iDVD project from the equation. Also, are you burning directly to disc or are you preparing a disc image? I'd go with the disc image approach because you can test your final build that way.
