Idvd 5 or 6 into DSP 3+
Hi All,
I was wondering if Apple ever fixed being able to import idvd 5 or 6 projects into DVDSP? The reason I really want to do this, is to use idvd's cool simple interface, but have the ability to use the better encoding in DVDSP...
Also, what are your typical settings for the absolute best quality you can get out of Compressor/DVDSP - or anything like bitvice that will encode even better? - I shoot with decent cameras and lighting, but I still notice jerky pans at times, esp when there are a lot of reds or color saturation in general. What is better than the DVDSP VBR Two Pass for encoding? I don't care how long it takes to encode, if the quality will be worth it.
Thanks,
Bob
Depending on the version of DVD SP and iDVD, DVD SP can open up the projects, but as of DVD SP 4 it did not open iDVD 5 or later projects. Have not seen if it changed in DVD SP 4.1
But you can recreate them with a bit of work by opening the Assets for each theme and using the elements.
Go to Library->Application Support --> iDVD and open up the package for the Themes to take a look how workable they are (you will see tifs and other elements) The general concept of opening DVD SP Templates is shown here http://www.dvdstepbystep.com/ira and is how you would do it for iDVD
As to encoding, yes bitVice and others (digigami.com) on the Mac do a better job. You should encode in Compressor and bring the encoded assets into DVD SP (do not encode in DVD SP) and AC3 the audio
You can use this http://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm to calculate your rates and should use 2-Pass VBR. Also exporting as self contained uncompressed from Final Cut then encoding also helps get better results

Imporing iDVD 5 (iLife 05) into DVD SP 3/4?
I've got a music theatre project on iDVD 5 that I'd need to import into DVDSP 3 to do further interactive work but I get an error on trying to import. I've tested it by creating a simple movie in iDVD4 and iDVD5. In DVDSP3 I can import the iDVD4 OK but not the iDVD 5, even when I save it as an archive. Firstly any way around this since short of not using iDVD5 anymore?
Secondly, will DVDSP 4 import iDVD 5? Would there be any joy in upgrading to DVDSP4 even if I could; there are immediate probs for me because of the fact that I want to keep using my Digidesign Digi001 digital audio interface. I suffered from the well known problem with upgrading to OSX 10.3.9, iTunes 4.8, QT 7 and the Digidesign CoreAudio driver 6.9. I ended up having to reinstall my OS and users from scratch and only upgrading to my current setup OSX 10.3.8, iTunes 4.8, QT 6.5.2, Digi CoreAudio 6.9 and my Digi001 works just fine. It was a nightmare and QT7/7.0.1 is the big issue until Digi get around to possibly updating the CoreAudio driver, which is not likely to be soon. There is a reasonable possibily that I might be OK in upgrading to OSX 10.3.9 but NOT QT7.

Putting PVDMs in NM-2V / VIC-2FXO / VIC-2FXS into DSP farm
I have a Cisco 2650XM router with an NM-2V module with one VIC-2FXO and one VIC-2FXS card in it. I'm very new to Cisco voice stuff and want to get started with it. I'm trying to pool the PVDMs on this router into a DSP farm so that they can be used in CME 4.1 with call conferencing / transcoding / VoIP calls between Cisco IP Communicator and Cisco VoIP physical phones but I'm having issues doing so. I believe I'm supposed to create a DSP farm by going into "voice-card X" mode and assigning them to the DSP farm?
I know that there are PVDMs present because they are listed when I do a "show voice dsp detail." I'm not sure if the PVDMs are present in the NM-2V module or actually on the VICs. Can someone offer advice?Yeah, the only cards / modules that I have in the router are the NM-2V, VIC-2FXO, and VIC-2FXS. Here is the "show diag" output as well as some other ones that may be useful.

DSP 4 and iDVD vs 5.0.1
Does anyone know if it is possible to get themes from iDVD and use them with DSP 4? The "lines" and "sliding panes" themes in particular...
Thanks in advance for any help...I really wanted to use one of the iDVD5 menu travel themes for a quick intro to some video. Tried all kinds of things. The only solution I found was to actually make a DVD from the iDVD file, play it on a DVD player and record it with a video camera, and import it into FCP or DVDSP4. It's roundabout, but it works. I did the iDVD menu without any text, and can use it as the background for the DVDSP menu or just an intro.
First I tried saving as a disk image, but importing a .VOB file from the VIDEO_TS folder didn't work, for some reason it would see only a couple of seconds of it. Quicktime would play only a couple of seconds, too, even though DVD player had no problem with it. -
I am new to Apple, since Oct '11. ( iDVD did not come with this laptop). I am making a slide show in keynote and can't download to iDVD to make it into a DVD that I can play on any home player. As far as I know, I need to make it into a quicktime file, then find some 3rd party software to convert to DVD. Has anyone had any luck with this. I think I may just purchase an old copy of iLife from Amazon...

Export iDVD animation into iMovie
I have a MacBook w/o an iDVD supported SuperDrive, so I can't burn a DVD, but I was wondering if it was possible to create my iDVD animation, export it into iMovie, dub it up to the beginning of my movie, and export the whole thing as a QT file to email to friends. This way I have the animation, although not looped or interactive, to use as a title sequence in my movie.
Any tips/suggestions? Thanks in advance.Just thought about something. I'm going to try and export the animation as a disk image and then Handbrake it as a QT. A lot of work, but it might turn out to be the only way. If you know an easier one, let me know. Thanks.

Importing a movie into iDVD from FCE
I am perplexed. In the iDVD - Movies display, there are shown half a dozen movies. The other couple of dozen movie files which do appear in Finder - Movies are not listed in iDVD. Nor will the movies in Finder-Movies drag over to iDVD. I clicked on the yellow triangle which appears in the "insert movie" box in the theme, clicked 'import' and it told me iDVD does not support that action. So how do I get a movie from Finder-Movies into iDVD? I did not have this trouble with iMovie.
This is my first completed FCE movie. And things were going so well.To import movies into iDVD you may use the File/Import/Video... command, after selecting the theme you want to use for the DVD menu.
If a movie in the Import dialog window cannot be imported, probably it has a non standard format, and for sure it was not exported from FCE. Any movie exported from FCE with Export/Quicktime Movie (the only correct method to get a movie from FCE to iDVD) may be imported into iDVD.
So I suggest you review the procedure you used to export from FCE and try again.

What's the fastest easiest way to burn an iMovie into an iDVD
I created an iMovie for my cousin who is going on college interviews tomorrow. I did not realize that in order to burn a DVD, I would have to create a whole new project in iDVD with stills, videos, music etc...
I need to burn the movie quickly. Any suggestions on a simple way to burn a movie onto a DVD would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
TracyHi
a. Use iMovie HD 6
b. Close iMovie and locate the movie project icon
c. Open iDVD and select an as simple menu possibly eg Brushed Metal (old themes)
d. Import movie or just drop it into iDVD window - but not into a button zone. (Import is easiest)
e. I choose
• Pro-Quality encoding (handles up to 120 minutes incl menu)
• DVD-R disks
• Verbatim
• x1 burnspeed (can be set in iDVD pref/Advance)
• minimum of 25Gb free space on internal boot hard disk
Limitations
• iDVD only cares about duration of movie (NOT GBs at all)
• SlideShows limited to 99 photos each (or do iit in iMovie)
• iMovie'08 and 09 not tools if High Quality is of need from miniDV material

Ok, just got Keynote 3 and i love it.
I love the feature export to iDVD, but can i use this with DSP and still have it work.
When i export from Keynote via iDVD it took my presentation and man, it made every slide it's own chapter in the chapter menu, nice.
I love that but i'd love it more if i could have this in DSP.
I was making a scrapbook of Christmas in Keynote and looks good but now i was gonna take it into DSP and add some more elements like all my Christmas footage and i have a trivia game going as well as i'd like the keynote movie in DSP so i could add subtitles on and off function.
i had export my keynote as a QT movie to see if that would work but it gave me black on the right and left when i changed the aspect ratio to 720X480.
Thanks CharlesSo far there's no way to open iDVD 6 files in DVDSP. What you're NOT seeing inside iDVD that actually there are chapter stops at EVERY build. The chapters menu doesn't show this, it only shows each slide. I'd personally love to be able to open one of these projects in DVDSP and redo it a bit, so I'd get interactivity, or a soundtrack, etc.
Let's hope DVDSP 5 will have this function...of course, if the new policy for DVDSP stays in place, you'll have to buy the entire Final Cut Pro Studio to get it. Check this out:

After disasters in iDVD `05, should I bother with `06? Is it repaired?
Hello,
I appreciate any help possible, but am particularly interested in comments from "Len Goff" and "John Beatty1." This question involves a small experiment.
I found errors in iDVD 5 that went unrepaired (yes, I did report them, once). There was no patch for the problems and I noticed that after 6 months and two downloads, patch support vanishes for iApps until the new version (which = $$) comes out. Hmmmm.... (I've picked up DSP4 and will start learning it ASAP. However, for simpler jobs, such as archive video, iDVD would be useful.)
So here's a re-hash of the two old issues that were never fixed via patch.
First, iDVD 5 handled the menus strangely relative to version 4. Using menus did not work well in v5. If on menu A, the user selected a button that was to lead to menu B, then the cursor/focus would "land" on menu B on a button that was at an elevation nearest to the button last used on menu A. If that's not clear, I'll rephrase. Say that menu B has many (6-10) buttons (leading to chapters) arranged in a tidy verticle line. On menu A, the button leading to menu B sits about 2/3rd's down the screen. The focus/cursor would "land" on menu B at whatever button was about 2/3rd's down the screen instead of going to the upper left and proceding from the top left, L-R, T-B.
This "error" lost and confused people for whom I made disks. I was not expecting it either. It made navigating difficult for people because they were expecting something more intuitive. You can look back in discussions and see that one solution to this was text-editing the files after making a disk image to correct navigation. Was this "fixed" in version 6?
Second, the other oddity in version 5 is this. From v4, the "Wedding Bronze/Silver Two" themes were the most maleable for making near-custom DVD's. This was nice. In V4, in these themes, the "button" included both the little picture and the text label on the picture. This allowed us to use either no picture (text only buttons) or no text (picture only). Well, in v5, they changed something. The active button was only highlighting the text. Therefore, if one tried to make a no-text/picture-only menu (because it's fun), it wouldn't work. The preview did ok but without highlights around the pictures, and you could navigate by counting. (Funny how things work in Preview but not in reality.) But once the encoding and multiplexing was finished, the menus couldn't be set because iDVD couldn't program the menu navigation to "land" on any button, for whatever reason, without a highlight. V5 would return a "-1" or "1" error. In DSP, you might see that the picture was not included as part of the button.
Experiment: If someone would please snag 5 to 10 minutes of video with a few chapter markers in it (more than 2 sec apart and more than 2 sec from each end of the video) and toss it into v6 with chapter menus. Please try this situation (as disk image) especially using the same theme or a very similar one. Please let me know if the textless buttons can now be made again, like v4 was. Again, did they fix it?
If you've read all of this, then thank you for your time. If anyone takes up my experiment, then double thanks! and please respond.
If nothing has improved, than I'll stick to importing v4 archives into DSP and tweaking. (Can't wait until I learn DSP more.)Good thing for you I like to do experiments!
The theme "Wedding Bronze" in iDVD6 still only highlights text on the submenu buttons.
However, I think that's a theme change and not an iDVD6 limitation per se, as the theme "Porfolio Color" seems to makes buttons that highlight your movie clip, and not just the text.
So I opened Wedding Bronze and dragged in a short movie with 5 chapters. As in iDVD5, those buttons only highlighted the text. But you can change the button style from the default button used in the theme! So I selected a button, and then chose a new style from the button pallet (a heart shaped button or a formal frame button). These new buttons select the frame around the movie itself, not just the text. Then I selected "Save as Disk Image", and it worked fine, with two of the chapters with no text at all on the buttons. Navigation using the DVD Player on the disk image worked fine and highlighted the frames around the chapters with no text at all on the buttons. Could you have changed the buttons in iDVD5? I think so!
As for iDVD6 always starting submenus in the top left, it doesn't work that way. However, I must admit that I don’t find the behavior confusing, and could envision multiple schemes that might seem to make sense to different people for different reasons. They key to me is that the navigation within a menu makes sense, not where the starting point is as long as the "highlight" shows up well.
As for this experiment, the button to go to the chapter menu (scene selection) is in the middle right of the main menu, but when I click on it, it highlights chapter 2 (with no text, middle top row) on the submenu. This is not the closest to the previous button, but it is not the “beginning” chapter either. Maybe it's button #2 going to button #2???
So there you go, hope this helps…..

Hello. I'm having trouble with the encoding quality in DSP. I exported a short film from FCP in DVC Pro HD format in quicktime. It looks great in the computer. However, when I import it into DSP and it encodes it, the final product looks very poor. For one, the titles look terrible and whenever there's movement the compression appears obvious to anyone. I've tried to get the best encoding and it looks the same. Is it a regular problem? Does this happen to all compressed footage? or am I doing something wrong? I even suspect that it looks better on iDVD.
thanxLength is 28 minutes.
Bit rate 8.0 - Max Bit rate 8.6
Audio was mixed in FCP. Sample rate 48K 16 bit
Media is TDK DVD-R
the titles are generated from FCP
In both my computer screen (cinema display) and tv Sony Wega, the dvd version doesn't look professional-especially titles.
how do you do it to look great?
thanx -
IDVD - dvd plays automatically without going to the menu screen
Hi,
I'm new to iDVD and burned my first project yesterday, after transfering it from iMovie.
A problem: I created chapter markers in iDVD, which when imported into iDVD appeared there. The home page let's you choose either to play the movie or select a scene. However, after burning the project to DVD and inserting it into a DVD player, it starts the movie automatically!
I would like it to go, by default, to the menu screen when inserting into a DVD player - so I can choose scenes. Any suggestions how I can get it to do that?
Thank you,
MontAs you have rightfully pointed out above; I wouldn't assume iDvd'08 and iDvd'09 are identical versions. But they are very similar. There are more significant differences within separate iMovie versions, as well as iPhoto, GB, etc.
Have I tested the difference between iDvd'08 vs. iDvd'09? No, not yet. As soon as I do I'll make every attempt to post a few of the differences. At the moment, I'm looking into separate volumes / hard drive bootability differences between Tiger vs. Leopard on both an external FW HD as well as internal ATA and SATA hard drives. And it seems I have my work cut out for me in this regard for at least the next few weeks. As soon as I complete this latter issue I will come back to iDvd.
Under Tiger I didn't have to worry about making a clone (using CCC or SuperDuper) of my existing volume/s that contained iDvd and other i-apps. But apparently (at least at first glance) this is longer the case under Leopard.

Best practice for exporting from iMovie '08 to iDVD
I am looking to find out what is the best practice for exporting from iMovie '08 to iDVD. I have read the other postings that give the basic howto (export to Media Browser then select the video in iDVD). However, my question is a little more technical. I have 1080i HD projects. I am interested in burning them to DVD in the best possible quality. What setting should I be using when I publish to Media Browser?
I am wondering about quality loss due to more than one conversion/compression. I suspect that when I export to the Media Browser then this is occurring. If I am not mistaken iMovie is using something like H.264 for this. Then, when I run iDVD I suspect it will it do another conversion/compression, I think to get to MPEG2. Not only could this result in a loss of quality but also it will take extra time. I am interested to know what others think about this.
Finally, I am looking to create DVDs for a lot of video. I am wondering if there are any USB or firewire hardware devices out there that could speed up the compression. I use the Elgato Turbo.264 when I want to encode to H.264 but I wonder if there is something similar for DVD creation.
Thanks in advance.the standards for videoDVD are 720x480, and usually mpeg2 encoded..
so, your HiDef project HAS to be 'downsampled' somehow..
I would Export with Qucktime/apple intermediate => which is the 'format' your project is allready, and you avoid any useless 'inbetween encoding'..
iDVD will 'swallow' this huge export file - don't mind: iDVD cares for length, not size.
iDVD will then convert into DVD-standards..
you can 'raise' quality, by using projects <60min - this sets iDVD automatically to highest technical possible bitrate
hint: judge pic quality on a DVDplayer + TV.. not on your computer (DVDs are meant for TVdelivery) -
How do I create an iDVD slide show that does not compress the photos making them low-res? When I insert the iDVD I have made into a DVD player connected to an HDTV, the playback quality of the pictures are very low. Is there a way to correct this when creatinf the iDVD?
The post by Bengt Wärleby in this topic describes a workflow for producing a high quality slideshow but not an HD one as macpmaus pointed out isn't possible: Create HD slideshow: Apple Support Communities
